Elodie sat on the edge of her bed, the soft hum of her mother's lullaby drifting in from the hallway. At six years old, her world was a swirl of bedtime stories, unknown secrets, and the comforting routine of night turning into day. But there was one constant curiosity that lingered at the edge of her young mind—her father.
She had only seen him in painting on the hallway wall, a short man with kind eyes, standing next to her mother, Sophie. He called occasionally, his voice growing more distant and numb with each conversation, as if a heavy sadness hung over him.
She asked one evening, clutching her favorite teddy bear

Her mother paused, a flicker of anger crossing her face before she smiled gently.

Daddy loves you very much, Elodie. He just has to work far away.
Satisfied for the moment, Elodie would nod, though the longing to understand more about this distant figure never fully left her.
She cherished those phone calls, the sound of her father's voice, even if it were for minutes.
