High school is not the best

Adira
Adira
I need to tell her
Adira paced back and forth inside her bedroom, contemplating the dialogues she would tell her Mother.
Adira
Adira
I need to tell Mom
Adira
Adira
but how?!
Adira is an aspiring pianist, and a regular girl who hates going to school. Countless times have she expressed her disdain to her Mother but never has she been serious. Hence, this time was different. She was not only sincere about her decision but also vehement.
Adira
Adira
I'll tell her
She steeled her heart, opened the decked room door, and marched out to the drawing room where her Mother was.
Adira
Adira
Mom?
Adira called out to her mother who was on the couch, her eyes fixed on her iPad.
Aliyah
Aliyah
Mhm?
Aliyah looked at her daughter who stood in front of her, hands clenched into fists and legs trembling. She put her iPad down on the glass teapoy.
Aliyah
Aliyah
What's wrong, dear?
Adira sucked in her lips, took a huge breath and closed her eyes before muttering the words.
Adira
Adira
I don't want to go to school anymore, Mom
After voicing the words, her heart raced and she slightly opened one of her eyes to meet her Mom's gaze to scrutinize her reaction.
To her astonishment, her Mother's lips curved into a smile. Sensing that her message did not reach her Mother, Adira took a deep breath again and repeated the meaning of her words.
Adira
Adira
I'm not joking, Mom. I'm serious.
Adira
Adira
I will not go to high school.
Aliyah's smile did not fade away.
Aliyah
Aliyah
Oh, honey, why is that?
Adira
Adira
I just don't like it. None of my classmates like piano, and it's not fun
Adira said what she held in her heart for a long time
Aliyah
Aliyah
Adira, it can be fun with people who might not like piano. You just have to find something else you guys have in common
Aliyah tried cajoling her daughter.
Adira
Adira
No, Mom. I want friends who like piano. And it's not like I love studying either
Adira braced her mind for whatever had to come next.
Aliyah remained silent, just glancing her daughter.
Aliyah
Aliyah
How about this?
Aliyah
Aliyah
I'll tell you a story, and you take your time to think about this until I finish narrating it
Aliyah grinned, reminiscing about her past. How precisely her daughter takes after her!
Adira
Adira
What kind of story?
Adira pouted, clearly not as intrigued as her Mother was.
Aliyah
Aliyah
A story about a girl in high school
Adira
Adira
Mom, no
Adira grimaced, knowing that this was one of her Mother's lectures. Aliyah sensed Adira's wariness and said something that would cheer her up.
Aliyah
Aliyah
It's a story about me
Aliyah
Aliyah
I'll tell you how I was in high school and what kind of friends I had
Aliyah
Aliyah
But given that you're so against hearing it, I think I shouldn't tell you.
Adira gasped, and her eyes lit up with fascination. How would her Mother, whom reporters try to film every time they go out, have lived her childhood?
Did she also hate going to school but did it because of grandma? What kind of friends did she have? And most importantly, who was Mother's high school crush?
So many questions she wanted to ask lingered inside her head, and maybe this was the time she'd get to ask.
Adira
Adira
Mom, I never said I didn't want to hear it
Adira tried to be level-headed and not show that she was more curious than she should be.
Adira
Adira
Tell me the story
Her little stormy eyes met her Mother's and saw Aliyah grinning.
Aliyah
Aliyah
Come, sit
Aliyah called her daughter and gestured for her to sit next to her. Gleefully, Adira hopped and took a seat next to her Mother.
She looked at her Mother with glimmering eyes, cueing her to start her story.

Where's Rene?

Aliyah marched in and out of the cafeteria searching for someone.
She kept asking the same question over and over again to different students, but all her efforts were in vain when she got the same reply.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Have you seen Leon?
She asked a boy who entered the canteen this time.
A student
A student
Nope
He curtly replied, and stared at Aliyah, who was panting before moving on.
Unable to suppress her irritation, she muttered with vexation.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Where the heck do I find that jerk?
She muttered even more rude words and finally said something with agony.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Ugh, what monsters I have got for classmates
Jola
Jola
Oh
A voice behind Aliyah exhaled, clearly in intrigue
Jola
Jola
Must be tiring, huh?
JOLA - A troublesome delinquent of Class D
NovelToon
NovelToon
"There's hell on earth: Me and school."
AGE: 16 HOBBIES: Being scolded by the principal, begging her father for allowances and stealing lollipops from middle schoolers. 'WHAT or WHO HAVE YOU ALWAYS LOVED?' 'Lollipops.'
-
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
What do you want, Jola?
Aliyah asked with a sigh. Delinquents were the last people she wanted to deal with.
Jola
Jola
What do you think?
Jola asked, nibbling her lollipop.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
I don't have time for your games
Aliyah turned around to leave to find the other pupil, but Jola's words stopped her mid-track.
Jola
Jola
I know where's Rene
That one name was enough to get Aliyah's entire attention.
Jola
Jola
I suppose that's why you're looking for Leon, to find Rene.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Where is she?
Aliyah wasted no time in getting to the point.
Jola kept nibbling at her lollipop and didn't open her mouth. After a minute or so, Aliyah figured it was on purpose.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Where is Rene?
Aliyah enunciated the words again, frowning a little.
Jola
Jola
...
Jola didn't utter anything.
Aliyah scoffed at her petty behavior.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Next class is physics, and I need to bring Rene before it starts.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Tell me where she is.
Aliyah put her boss girl attitude, and tried to be intimidating, but it didn't work that well.
Jola
Jola
Woah
Jola
Jola
So that's why you're called an actress
Jola
Jola
You can play the boss pretty well
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Jola, I'm not an average middle schooler, you better watch what you say to me.
Jola
Jola
Oh, yeah, sure
Jola
Jola
After all, the one to bully the head girl would be a fool.
Aliyah tried to contemplate Jola's behavior. She isn't usually like this to her.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
What do you want, Jola?
Jola's lips turned into a mischievous smile.
Jola
Jola
Your help, of course
Aliyah frowned and rolled her eyes at her words.
Jola
Jola
Let's make a deal, Ali
Though Jola's words put Aliyah in discomfort, she waited for her to complete.
Jola
Jola
I'll tell you Rene's whereabouts, and you convince the Math teacher to move my grade up in the last exam.
Aliyah sighed.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
You can ask me for anything but that.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Do you think Math teacher would listen to me?
Jola scoffed.
Jola
Jola
Why not?
Jola
Jola
It wouldn't be a surprise even if he only listened to you
It was Aliyah's turn to scoff at Jola's words. The way these students think the head girl can even manipulate teachers says a lot about Aliyah's reputation.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
I can't do that
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
I can ask him to reduce your punishments or whatever, so just study hard next time.
Jola
Jola
Okay, then forget about seeing Rene.
Jola was about to leave before she heard Aliyah.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Do you think you're the only one who can blackmail?
Aliyah's patience had run out, and she was about to pull off something that would destroy her reputation forever. Meanwhile, Jola sensed tension by the way Aliyah's tone changed.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
I saw what you did after the Math exam.
She said with such conviction that made Jola flinch.
Jola
Jola
W-What did I do?
Though Jola's voice was stern, her stutter let Aliyah know that she was intimidated.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Oh, Jola
Aliyah looked around, watching if someone was eavesdropping their conversation.
When she met Jola's eyes again, she whispered.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
How desperate you must have been to sneak back your test paper from the stash to mark an answer?
As she uttered word by word, Jola's eyes brimmed with fear, and by the end of the sentence, she tried hard not to facepalm herself.
Jola
Jola
You were there?
She whispered, eyes unbelievably guilty, and voice shaking.
Jola had tried to mark an answer differently after submitting it. After the collected test papers were put in a stash for grading in the hallway, she took her paper secretly and marked different answers for certain questions. Aliyah was passing by the library when she saw Jola.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
I'll have to tell the Math teacher if you don't tell me where Rene is.
Jola was backed into a corner now, and she had no option but to comply. Bitterness grew under the pit of her stomach.
She sighed and decided to tell Aliyah.
Jola
Jola
I saw her near the lake at the start of break.
Jola confessed.
Aliyah sensed the hostility coming from her. She knew that she should not push Jola further.
(Young) Aliyah
(Young) Aliyah
Thanks
Aliyah muttered, and left for the lake.
Lorelei High School is surrounded by a lake in the north. It shouldn't have taken long for Rene to get there, and it shouldn't take long for Aliyah to see her and bring her back either. But all of those are true only if Rene is still in the lake.
So Aliyah rushed to find Rene.
It wasn't that Rene was a friend, she was a classmate. A student of class D, which means Aliyah, being the class representative must take care of her.
