Ah yes *wears a fake expression of realization*

You won't forget to properly clean my desk next time if I give you a proper punishment now
Elena
*shivers and continues sobbing*
Leah
Hey you head maid! Bring me my whip!
Head maid
*hesitates before handing her the whip* *whispers in a low voice* Mam please do it in moderation it would be troublesome if she were to die here
Leah
*angrily glares at her* You dare command me!

If you are feeling so concerned for this wench then why don't you join her?
Head maid
*withdraws back in fear*
It was a regular occurrence in the McClair house
Contrary to her angelic appearance, the eldest daughter of the McClair house had the disposition of a demon
Elena was hired as the scapegoat for the first daughter of the house Leah to take her anger out upon
After all, it was better to harass an employee who had no family backing her up than an employee whose family might report the mistreatment to the authorities
Not that it mattered, after all the McClair were one of the most powerful households
But it did save them from unnecessary troubles
To Leah, Elena was just a reusable toy
And to the employees of the house, Elena was an invisible entity who was an offering to appease the temper of the lady

*sobs on the floor because she is too injured to stand up*

*Spits* Hah! You ungrateful wench! Because of you I had to use my own hands to do such crude things you should be thankful that I myself disciplined you
Elena knew that if she didn't express her 'gratitude' for the so called 'kindness' that Leah had bestowed upon her, the punishment would continue on

*says in a small voice while trembling* Tha-thank you miss
Leah
I still don't sense enough sincerity
Elena
*looks at her in horror*

Maybe I will be a little lenient with you this time since I am so merciful

Head maid! Lock her up in the punishment room and only provide her water for two days

*looks at Elena with a twisted smile* After all you must stay alive to serve me

No! No mam I swear I will do my best! Please don't lock me in that cursed room

*shouts to the maids*What are you waiting for! Drag her there!
Out of all the punishments that Elena was subjected to Elena hated to be in the dark punishment room the most
It may seem like a better punishment that all the other things that she had to deal with, but there was something grossly ominous about that room
Whenever she entered that room she felt like someone was watching her and all the energy inside her seemed to be sucked out of her
This was however, not the worst part
She would hallucinate gruesome things when locked up in that room
She would hear screams that didn't belong to any of the employees
After entering this house, her sanity was the only thing that was left intact, but this room seemed to be greedy for that as well
She was scared to be inside that room for even a single moment for fear of losing her sanity
Elena
*as she is dragged by the maids* No! Please no! Have some mercy!
Head maid
*looks at her pitifully* I am sorry Elena we have no choice we don't want to be punished for disobeying the lady's commands
Elena was thrown into that room and the door closed

The Dark Room 2
The sound of something heavy falling came from the farther side of the dark room
This was strange as the room was supposed to be empty. Nobody stepped inside that room so not even a single pin should be present inside that room let alone anything heavy enough to make the sound that Elena heard
Elena
(Maybe someone else is being punished here too)
Elena
Hello! *in a louder tone*
There was still no answer
Elena
(Oh no! Am I hallucinating again!? )
Elena
No! I must stay calm
Elena slowly crept up to the usual corner where she found refuge when she would be locked in this room
Elena
(It's still strange how in this room where no one ever comes to clean or dust, there is not a single spider web or speck of dust anywhere)
The only source of light that was available in that small dark room was the candle that Elena was allowed to carry inside. In the glow of that light, she could see the small room completely clean and devoid of any speck of dust.
When she was first ordered to be locked up in this room, she had expected this room to be absolutely dirty and was prepared to meet a few rats and spiders
Imagine her surprise when she saw that the room was completely clean and in good shape
In a way, the strange cleanliness of the room when no one ever enters it adds to the eerie feeling that this room gives
Elena tried to reason that maybe someone secretly comes to clean this room but deep down she knew that nobody had the reason to do so. And on top of that, the hallucinations that she would see and hear when she comes to this room certainly didn't help her discomfort

Please Lord please don't let me witness those gruesome sights and voices again today
As Elena sat down in the corner, suddenly all the pain from her wounds about which she had forgotten about because of the fear of being locked inside this room came back to her
Those wounds ached a lot. Even more so than what was considered usual.
Elena tried to ignore the pain but how much could a fifteen-year-old girl with delicate skin really tolerate?
She burst out in tears. Maybe it was the extra pain today or the moment of realization that no one in this world has any value of her life
She was sold out by the orphanage and all her friends have been adopted and have probably forgotten about her
Yes, she was sold out because she was the 'defective piece' that no one wanted to adopt

What have I done to deserve this!?

I have always tried to make myself useful to other but yet I always get the shorter end of the stick! Why are we taught that every good deed gets repaid!? All of those teachings are nothing but hoax!
Elena
Maybe the screams that I hallucinate when I am locked in this room are glimpses of my future

Well dying is better than living the meaningless life that I am living right now. I am living just for the sake of living. What's the point of staying alive? *emptily stares at the floor while she mumbles her thoughts*

Exhausted both mentally and physically, Elena felt drowsy and soon falls into a deep slumber
When she woke up again her eyes felt heavy and she felt a bit drowsy.
She could see that it was already morning from the little rays of sunlight that were peeking inside the room from the crack under the door
Surprisingly enough, the pain from her wounds didn't hurt as much as they did last night except for an excruciating headache
Maybe she was just overreacting last night because of all her trauma and the wounds were not that serious after all
She was really thankful that she didn't have any hallucinations yesterday as she usually used to have whenever she would be locked up in this room
Well, the head maid must be coming here soon to bring her water since she was the only one who had the key to the dark room
Elena tried to stand up from the ground, but her whole body felt stiff. It seemed as if she had been sitting in that exact position for a long time. But that couldn't be possible since she was asleep the whole time, and she was always known for being a restless sleeper

Why does my body feel stiff?
Elena
Maybe I slept in one position without moving yesterday
But instead of it being the head maid at the door, the entrance was empty and behind that a warm light was coming
It was so gentle. It almost seemed like it was begging Elena to come in it's comforting shade
Before Elena could further question and digest what the heck was going on right now, her legs which were stiff frozen just a few moments ago began to walk towards the light by themselves
Elena
*drowsily*Mhmm.... it feels warm and comforting. Maybe God finally listened to me
Elena
Maybe I should just stay here
Then abruptly Elena's eyes shut open
She found herself sitting on the floor of the corridor with cleaning tools in her hand
Head maid
Why are you slacking off!?
Elena
Huh- What? What happened?
Head maid
If you don't want the lady to punish you again you better make yourself more useful than that
Elena
Huh? Wasn't I in the punishment room?
Head maid
You were there five days ago and if you don't want to go there again you better do your job better than you are doing right now
The head maid storms off after scolding Elena
