"Congratulations miss, you are six weeks pregnant," the doctor said after reading through the report generated on the system, at first Tamara wasn't sure if he was talking to her as she had the habit of zoning out on conversations. When he looked up and saw her being in a daze, he tapped the table to bring her back from her reverie and repeated what he had just said, Tamara almost laughed at the absurdity of his claim, how was that even possible? Was he trying to pull a prank? The serious look on the doctor's face confirmed that was no joke. Is she going to have a miracle baby?
"Are you sure that is my test result, doctor?" she asked in an attempt to correct any error, but the doctor was annoyed with her and simply told her he had other patients to attend to, and she was wasting too much of his time. Tamara tried so hard to understand what was happening but came up blank, nothing was making any sense. How do one go from being sick and having a strong urge to puke to becoming pregnant? Perhaps there is a mistake, maybe the doctor was a quack who doesn't know the first thing about his job but acts like he knows it all. Tamara felt numb after leaving the hospital. Her boyfriend was supposed to pick her up but he had texted her that he was caught up with work and would wait for her at home. Alone and sitting on a bench in the bus stop, she contemplated about her next course of action before making her way to the drug store close to her house. There was only one way to confirm the ridiculous claim from the doctor that supposedly knows everything. Taking a deep breath, she marched into the store and went to aisle that held what she needed, praying to God that the doctor was wrong and might have gotten her result mixed up with someone else's.
The clerk looked at her weirdly when she presented two packs of her purchase but rang it up without a word, and when she paid, she rushed out of the store as if the devil was chasing after her.
"Hi babe, where have you been?" her boyfriend, Johnathan Wright said brightly when she walked into her family home, she clutched her tote bag firmly against her chest and acted as if she had been caught, her heart beating rapidly as if he would ask to see what she was hiding inside her bag in the next minute, her sister, Anya who has been keeping Johnathan's company in her absence watched her with her hawk like eyes and broke into a huge grin. Tamara realized she should have used the ladies at the convenience store instead, that would have reduced her anxiety.
"Why are you sweating so much? Did you do something bad?" her sister said with a jeer and Tamara's face turn red.
"What's wrong? Are you still feeling ill? Should I call my family doctor over?" Johnathan asked worriedly, concern lacing his every word.
"N…no, I'm fine, I just need a minute" Tamara said and quickly dashed into the bathroom. Making sure the door was bolted, she emptied the contents of her bag on the floor. She took out six packets and peed on them all, her heart in her mouth as she waited, after a minute, all the sticks showed two lines, she was indeed pregnant but who was father and how did it happen? Is the child even a human? Tamara couldn't wrap her head around this new information and felt her head spinning, it can't be, what would everyone say? What about her dad? He has so many expectations of her.
"Are you still alive?" Anya asked banging on the door after what seemed like an hour, "Your boyfriend is about to leave," she said and Tamara very carefully packed up her pregnancy test kit, wrapped in a small plastic bag and dropped it back in her bag, unaware that one of the sticks was still on the floor and had found it's way to lodge beside the WC, splashing some water on her face to make herself look a little presentable, she walked out with a smile on her pale face. Her sister wasn't expecting to see her come out of the so soon, in fact, she was praying she never did so that she might have the chance to see Johnathan off and was unhappy when Tamara did.
After Johnathan's departure, Tamara went to her room to brood, trying hard to understand her current predicament. As she sat on her bed, she started jotting down every event that might have led to her being pregnant, everything she could remember from two months ago, that would help her understand what was happening better. The problem was, it wasn't easy to remember everything that far back, but she was determined. Tamara had always been an introvert, which means she rarely go out except to the academy, to the library and occasionally to visit her betrothed Johnathan, she basically had no friends and liked it that way, her engagement to Carambite's heir was a miracle, being set up from the time of her birth by her late mother. It also inadvertently means that Johnathan was the only boy she had ever been with, could he be responsible for the baby? Tamara thought with a little hope, how would she tell him? He was already so concerned that she was sick, telling him she was not sick but pregnant would be like springing the impossible on him. She began to make plans on how to inform her father when suddenly she heard a blood-curdling scream, Anya was at it again, only God knows what she was on about this time.
Few minutes later, her stepmother burst into her room looking furious, Anya hot on her heels. "I always knew you are not as innocent as everyone made you to be," Elisabeth said furiously, but Tamara has no idea what she was talking about.
"What is it, stepmother?" she asked tiredly, she had only been able to eat a few bites of her food and was resting.
"You are so shameless, after getting impregnated, you still act like you are in a relationship with Johnathan" Anya said angrily. Tamara was scared speechless, she didn't think anyone would find out that quickly, did someone look in her bag? Tamara thought with dismay, she should have disposed the kit properly, looking at her tote bag sitting on the dresser and wondering how they found out her little secret, she hadn't even left her room since she came, her food was brought in by the maid. Tamara wanted to buy some time for herself until she could find out who was responsible or how it happened before she would tell her dad but it seemed that is impossible now.
"What are you talking about?" she asked softly, pretending she didn't understand.
"Well, I am not pregnant neither is Anya, which means this is yours" she said raising up one of the test stick Tamara had used previously. Suddenly her vision began to blur, she was speechless as she stared at the incriminating evidence in front of her, both Elizabeth and Anya were pleased with this development and couldn't wait to tell everyone about it. Tamara knew there si nothing she could do now and if she thought she could hide the truth before, she had another thing coming.
"Wait, it's Johnathan's" she said feebly even though she didn't think that was possible, the closest intimacy she had ever shared with him was a short kiss.
"Are you certain?" Anya asked wiping out her mobile phone to dial a number, and started speaking at once. "Your goody two shoes said you are the father of her baby," she said when the receiver picked up, "Oh she's so pregnant, we found her test kit in the bathroom," she continued, sounding as if she just won the lottery or something "Well, that's her claim so you better get down here to clarify things," she said looking at Tamara with a broad smile. While Anya was making the call, Elizabeth was also calling Mr Weasley Thornton, her husband to explain everything.
"Where is she?" Johnathan roared from the car before he could get into the house, one look at his face, and it was clear that he was furious, nobody has ever seen the level-headed young man looked so angry.
"She is in the living room acting all pitiful," Anya replied all too happy to see him, she enjoys seeing her sister's misery and wanted nothing more than to escalate the whole situation. Johnathan didn't wait to regards her like he always does and just stormed into the house. "Did you say I was responsible for your bastard baby? When did we?" Johnathan asked as soon as he saw Tamara crying on the floor.
"It's good that you are here," Elisabeth said gleefully when she noticed the annoyance on Johnathan's face, turning to the girl on the floor, she asked "Can you repeat what you told us before?" but Tamara couldn't bring herself to repeat the words, one look at Johnathan, and it was clear he wasn't the father.
"I always knew she has a secret hobby, only God knows which dirty old man knocked her off," Anya said and Johnathan turned to look at her, his face was red with anger, he could not believe the sweet girl he had always seen as harmless could do a thing like that, and right at the time they were discussing choosing a date for their wedding.
"How could you?" he asked, disappointment written all over his face, "I trusted you" he said before slumping into the nearest chair.
"I warned you she isn't all that great," Anya input and just then, the front door burst open to reveal Tamara's dad, he had rushed down from the countryside when he got the call that his precious daughter has been knocked off, he didn't want to believe it but the scene before him showed it was true.
"Welcome home daddy, I hope you believe now?" Anya said all too happy when the man walked into the living room, the shock on his face evident of his disappointment, if it were Anya, he wouldn't have been so surprised, but Tamara has always been reserved, respectful and promising but most importantly she was also his daughter, left behind by his beloved wife.
"Tamara, are you really pregnant?" he asked even after everyone told him she was, "It's okay, you can tell me, who is responsible for it?" he coaxed looking from Johnathan who was supposed to be her husband in a few months to Anya who was smug and drinking from a glass as if she has something to celebrate, his wife, Elizabeth was glaring at him daring him to try save the situation.
"I don't know daddy," Tamara said honestly, but this was laughable enough, how could anyone not know who was responsible for their baby, unless they have too many partners.
"Be honest Tamara, didn't you say it was Johnathan's?" Anya asked, walking over to the middle of the room.
"He isn't," Tamara said softly, her eyes was pleading with them to understand her situation.
"Then how did you become pregnant? And you better don't tell me you don't know," Johnathan voice reverberated within the room, "You know what? I am no longer interested in this union, I would never marry a woman like you." with that he left, too angry to keep up with the back and forth. Anya was satisfied things are going the way she wanted, right now her mother and stepfather were arguing about what to do and Anya was all too smug.
"Oh Tamara," she called bending over the distressed lady, "Our perfect little queen, if you are interested, I could give you a hint on the information you are dying to know," she said but left before Tamara could grasp what her meaning was.
