A golden sun spreads its light over a grassy plain. As the wind creates hollow sounds through the blades of grass. Blue bells sway in tune. The sun hits their petals.
On the horizon, a small, humble wood cottage resides behind a small lake. A bed of roses sway to and frow, whilst a pebbled path leads to a chestnut door, ivy patterns swarm the front. A deer - whose antlers swirl in a spiral - watch over the home. It sees all and protects all.
Deep inside, a small girl squeezed a teddy bear hunched over on the floor, engulfed herself in a book about fairies and angels. A woman wore a light brown dress and her hair tied up in a bun. The woman began humming to herself. Her dangling baby hairs framjng her face perfectly. The girl took notice of this and began humming the same tune until sunny smiles spread across their faces so wide they couldn't hum anymore.
Sat down at the table, they enjoyed; a big bowl of mushroom and tomato soup with a big chunk of cheddar cheese, a small glass of milk, and a thick slice of bread. Both appeared tired, yet happy as they slurped up their soup and shared the bread and cheese.
Finishing it off with a huge chug of milk, the woman stated, " You know you should drink ideally before ya eat, you know."
" Yes, but the bread was dry." The girl quietly whispered.
" Oh, really now." questioned the woman in a sarcastic tone.
" Maybe I should have made the bread?" A laugh was followed by this ridiculous statement as the woman inquired.
" Oh really? You know if you had a go, we would have nothing to eat." The woman then kissed the girl on the forehead and put the plates away, leaving the leftover food on the side as she went outside.
"Mummy."
"Mummy, are you there?"
There was no reply.
The girl began to panic. Her heart beat began exclerating until it bled out in her ears. Tears fell down her cheeks. She reached for the door. She saw her mum.
"It's okay, I'm okay. Sorry to worry you, I was just in my own world. Oh no, come here, my sweetheart. Come here." , the woman comforted.
"Mummy waahhah I...I...thought you left...m...me." A tear slid down the women's cheek as she held out her arms.
"No. Mummy would never leave, not ever."
It was silent all night. Yet the girl never let go of the woman, and the woman would never to let go. Holding her tight to her chest. Kissing her forehead, she reassured, "I love you so much my darling never forget it."
A half asleep girl replied, "I won't, I love you too much to forget." whilst smiling.
A week later, it was the same routine. The same food and the same outcome. Smiles all over. One small happy woman and content girl nothing ever changed until......
I suppose you could say the memories were happy, even if it was only for a short while.
"Mummy??" A little girl cried,"mummy??" Until her cry turned to a wail, and tears were sliding of her cheeks,"Mummy?" she promised she wouldn't leave me she pinky promised. The girl headed to the front door in a scrap, knocking over the plants and sending them scattered on the floor.
When the girl reached the door, she could see soldiers all tall wearing navy blue uniforms with red sashes across their front, a golden lion crest resting on their breast. A black moustache was curled at the ends of this man's face, just above his lip none below. And was the only supply of hair on this man's head as he scrambled his words to cover up the truth, I thought it was a good thing for soldiers to come to peoples homes until I saw my mother fall to her knees her hands clasped around her mouth tears sliding down her chalk white cheeks.
As I approached my mother, in order to console her, a soldiers hand held firmly on my shoulder. " Leave your mother alone kid she doesn't need you right now." he said this in a warming manner, but I could see a sinister look in his eyes. What did he say to my mum??
Just then my mum raised her hand in slow motion and just as it raised above her head I felt hands on my waste shoulders and legs my body trembled as I lashed out thrashing left to right "mum?" "Mum?" The cries grew more desperate "mum?" "Help" "help me mum? Their taking me away Mum? Mum?" tears flowed down my cheeks creating a pool on my face as my mum sat their with her head bowed her hand now tucked snug inside her skirt as if rewarding it with warmth after it closed me off to the cold.
The soldiers were snickering on their way back carrying me like a sack and to be honest I no longer thrashed or struggled still too shocked after what I had seen my mother do we weren't an unhappy family right? I thought my mum loved me she would also call me sweetheart "did my mum even care about me at all" it came out as a shallow breathe nothing worse discussing my mum had abandoned me that's all I had to know and that's all I really did know.
"Bang" "uhh" a soldier had just flung the girl into the rear end of a cart stoked with hay and horse poo it smelt like a dung farm, and trust me those stink. "Did you secure the girl?" A soldier asked "yeah we did she looks underfed her clothes are also ratty she'll need a bath before food" and that was that the conversation didn't last long they then talked about their wives and kids until we started the journey to the capital.
The great city was enormous, and buildings swarmed the surface. It was suffocating. Herds on herds of people gathered around in one place, creating a blocking in the road. Angry men wearing suits swore as they walked past checking the time on their handy wristwatch.
Babies cried as mothers tried soothing them to sleep with gentle words. A soft hand lay limp on their shoulders. Children ran in and out of back alleys hiding from police who wore grey and blue overalls a sword dangling at their waste.
The first big building you could see was a huge architectural building of utmost significance.
Bells hung accordingly in order from smallest to largest, only the two big ones being seen from the front. A huge cross embedded onto the archway above the double doors was the symbol this whole building was dedicated to yet as we moved past I could only see solemn looks on the people's faces children were the only ones laughing.
Roads were lined with a golden rim, creating a magnificent glow to illuminate the pavement, creating a halo effect along the walls of prestigious buildings. It was completely and utterly different from the rural life the girl had known. It's absolutely different.
The journey lasted overall no less than 2 hours to reach their destination, a whitewashed 4-story building with intricate designs, A crying angle with broken wings on the left and an angle with widespread wings almost as if stopped in mid-flight was waiting patiently on the right.
A stubborn man wearing a heinous sneer across his brow just by standing next to him the whole mood turned dark his gloomy washed out eyes turned towards me, I held my breath hoping he wouldn't hear me, though I know that was silly, his eyes glanced towards me showing no emotion he then leaned towards the guards "is this the girl?" The guard who looked like he was also holding his breath responded, "Yes sir, she is. " The man gave a devilish glare in my direction, "she doesn't look like much, besides her eyes, they could go for a good price. " A toothy grin met my disgusted expression.
The man known as 'sir' turned right then left, grabbing a cigarette out of his pocket and gently
Placing it between his lips, the lighter stuck once as a spark lit on the cigarette he then turned around and smiled. Shivers shifted down my spine.
The guards suddenly came up behind me, a bat in each hand rope dangling over their shoulders, a mutual expression not letting anything slip as they made their way behind me, grabbing at my limbs one tied my wrists together the other tied my ankles 'shit I can't get out of this now can I?'
The guard grunted in response, yet to my surprise, they lifted me like I was as light as a feather. "I get I'm underfed, but do you really have to lift me so easily?" One of the guards turned around." What did you say?" he said this in a thuggish tone,"nothing of importance," I mumbled in response he then snapped back "be quite than!'"
The stairs were made of a marble flooring, no cracks anywhere to be seen. I was being carried up the 100, or so flight of stairs to the place where my fate will be decided I would be lying if I said I was not scared for my throat ached as I swallowed loudly.
Thump! Thump! Thump! Every time his hand collided with the brass oak wood door, I clenched my eyes in a display of cringe no one was coming. No one was coming. Did they forget what day it was? Maybe they will postpone my trial for another day? Maybe something more important came up? Oh, how wrong I was.
After three or four attempts at knocking, someone finally opened the seemingly too wide doors. The man in question was a small petite looking man, more bones than flesh the whites of his eyes turning a mingy yellow color the under eye was gray as if he had not gotten sleep in years, yet he opened the two doors with ease surprising me of course due to how overwhelmingly heavy the double doors looked. The guards made their way in walking in a slow but steady pace, tacking two steps at a time just like everyone else.
We passed a total of four people. One was a young girl wearing round silver glasses carrying a fair share of books, which looked to weigh the same as her body weight. The second is an old man with an extra long gray beard almost touching his toes he was frail, much like the man at the door, with three books laying flat in the palm of his hand this time. The third was a rather particular young boy with raven black hair and emerald eyes at first, I admit I thought he was beautiful his rosy cheeks, adding an innocent flavor to his face, yet his smile was that of the devil his smile looked forced and strained his eyes did not show any delight or happiness keeping them hard and cold his teeth were too white like chalk as his face was too pale like snow? Who was he? "I hope I don't run into him," I grumbled.
