Forgotten Crimes (Heroes Of Darkness Bk1)

Chapter 1

It all happened so fast, Benji froze in place as he watched the tragic experience of that night, replay right before his eyes, how she was falling to her death, knowing it was him being the cause of her death as he watched her lifeless body lie on the cold snowy rocks near the frozen stream. Benji started to panic; he didn’t know what to do, it all just happened so suddenly, he didn’t mean to kill her  it was all just a mindless accident, His mind started to become clouded with judgment and fear. Then benji said to himself trying to calm down “relax, benji relax get yourself under control this is no time to panic, I have to get rid of the body”.

He was startled awake by the noise of his alarm clock. With wide eyes he sat up in bed. He was having that nightmare again, the same one he’s had ever since that tragic snowy night. Benji threw his hands over his face and began to cry, hurting over this feelings of guilt and fear for so many years. Benji took a deep breath and released it, shaking of the unwelcoming feeling of that day and pulled himself to get ready.

Leaving his room and heading downstairs he got the feeling that today wasn’t going to be in his favour.

Benji was already finished having a short breakfast and was getting ready to head out for the day, when a sudden knocking sounded on his front door. It was quite unusual for someone to be knocking on his apartment door this early in the morning, he ignored it the first time, then he heard it again but this time it was louder and more rushed. Slowly was how he got up from the table but cautiously was definitely how he approached the door and there is was again the obnoxiously loud knocking on his door.

Benji picked up the baseball bat resting near the door. Holding the door knob in one hand and the bat in the other, benji quickly swung the door open holding the bat upwards ready to strike an attack but there was no one there not a single soul to be found in sight, all there was to be seen was a little red box with a beautiful blood red bow tied around it. The box was suspicious but it was also very familiar almost like the one he gave to her just before that accident. Just thinking about it made him shudder terribly in a very frightening way.

A sudden chill raced down his spine as he looked at the black velvet box in his hands and when he pulled the red bow and opened the box he felt his heart drop at what he saw. There inside said box, was the very same necklace she had been wearing just before she died; the very same one he had spent hours picking out for her, but that wasn’t all. There underneath the necklace was a small note saying the exact same words he had been dreading to hear since the incident 5 years ago.

***Oh benny! Wouldn’t you like to meet me again, after how long? 4 or 5 years maybe. Well darling, here’s something only you can do for me.

Meet me at the place where our last date ended and where you laid me to rest at the exact same time and DON’T BE LATE.

Love, Lizzy***

Benji couldn’t breathe anymore; he was having a panic attack. He never thought that a day would come where he would have to face his worst nightmares. He couldn’t take it anymore; it was all too much for his fragile heart. His vision clouded over and black spots were all he could see as he collapsed on the cold tiled floor of his suddenly dark apartment. There’s nothing else to describe what happened, benji passed out and that’s that and he didn’t wake until it was completely dark outside.

Chapter 2

When benji awoke, he had a raging headache and he was having trouble remembering what happened before he passed out until he realized that that it was completely dark outside. It was at that moment, that he really remembered what happened; the pounding on the door, the necklace and that note. Poor benji, he really wanted this all to be just a silly dream, just another one of his nightmares but unfortunately luck wasn’t on his side.

He eased himself slowly off the floor and staggered towards the dining table in search of his phone, to check the time but when he checked, the realization hit him so that he almost fell over. Today was the day it all happened and what’s worse, is that he was extremely late, so he needed to get moving real fast.

Completely putting aside the fact that his head felt like it was being crushed, benji grabbed his coat, keys and checked his pants pockets for his wallet and ran out the apartment slamming the door behind him not even bothering to lock it.

This was probably the second time benji regretted not having bought himself a car, the first was well; it doesn’t matter, let’s not get of track. Benji stood there for 15mintutes before he got himself a taxi and another 20 when he finally reached his destination. Well not exactly, he had to walk the rest of the way because the place was kind of a restricted area. It was an old computer factory on the outskirts of town, near a mini river with a small curved bridge.

Benji had the time of his life trying to cross over the massive iron gates to get into the property. He realised a sigh of relief when he finally got over but took it back when he realized what comes next. Taking deep breaths, he approached the old wooden doors slowly because he couldn’t afford to have another panic attack. The doors made a screeching noise when benji pushed them open and the scents of moldy books and dust burnt his nose, it made him sneeze.

He shivered as he entered the building “uhh! Why is it so cold in here?” he mumbled shivering uncontrolablely“I can’t remember it being this cold that night, oh well that was probably because I was too busy to notice it”. Walking deeper into the dark building, the moonlight was bright so when benji looked around he saw nothing but old dusty computers surrounding him. “The place was surprisingly clean” benji thought.

“Hello” he called moving in a circle around him to take in more of the place “is anyone here” but as expected there was no answer. The beep beep sounds of computers turning on startled him almost to death.

Pressing one hand to his screaming heart and the other to his head, suddenly noticing his painful headache, he approached one of the monitors looking closely to the images slowly appearing on the screen. He must have been losing his mind; benji couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He looked. He wiped his eyes. He looked again at the screen and was sure he was not seeing right, “NO!” he screamed “it’s not true!”. He looked at the benji from 5 years ago, dragging the dead body of his beloved lizzy away from the frozen river towards the doors of the factory.

“How could I not have known that there were working security cameras?” benji whispered brokenly as he cried his eyes out “obviously the owner must have gone through the footage, I’m doomed, my life is over”. Why benji did something like that? He had no idea.

Chapter 3

Benji knew he’d be in deep shit, if whoever it is that found out about this were to go to the police, but he could care less about that because at the far end of the room in the darkest corner were what looked like eyes; yellow sinister eyes that shone brightly through the darkness . He stopped crying instantly, took a deep breath and careful steps back when it seemed like it was moving closer towards him at a slow pace.  His legs felt like jelly, but he kept moving backwards until he tripped on something and fell over onto his ***. That didn’t stop him from continuing though; it only urged him to get further away. So he quickly scrambled to his feet and made a wild dash for the door but that was his only mistake; never turn your back on a wild beast and run from it because its only instinct is to chase.

Poor benji, if only he knew he could of prevented what happened next from happening. The beast pounced on him from behind and he fell face first into the concreted flooring of the factory right in front of the door. Just a little more and he would have made it to safety; is what he thought but that would have been possible if it was just a natural creature of the woods and not some beast from a myth.

Benji was sure he had a broken nose and a busted mouth when his face hit the ground and another panic attack for the third time that day when the beast flipped him over unto his back. His weak little heart was pounding so hard against his rib cage it hurt. Blue eyes stared into his eyes, so deep he swore they saw into his soul as well; they weren’t yellow anymore. He couldn’t see anything else on the beast; darkness shrouded the rest of its body. It was crouched above Benji just staring into his eyes “I finally found you”, it growled.

At this benji couldn’t keep his eyes open, he was going to faint and wasn’t about to fight it.

(*Benji)

Lizzy and I laid there on the lush green grass surrounded by darkness in a wide open field, looking into the starry sky, while the last bit of moonlight shone upon us as we held hands. This was a big step into our relationship we were about to take. So big that my body was numb from an overload of nerves and my mind was a mess. When I turned to look lizzy, she was just lying there, calm as if this didn’t bother her one bit, “and I call myself a man”, I scoffed. I was a nervous wreck and here she was lying there like this was a normal everyday life experience. Saying I was scared would be an understatement, I was downright terrified. As a last minute resort, I thought of backing out or coming up with an excuse but unfortunately for me life always had to be a bitch.

I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn’t realise I was staring, when she suddenly turned on side to look at me, with a look in her grey eyes that I didn’t quite understand and had me shivering internally. My face and body burned with desire when I realized what the look in her eyes meant but that just made my fear increase and me realize just how much knowledge I lacked in that department. So as quickly as humanly possible, I turned my in the other direction away from her, before she could notice the obvious blush present on my face. ‘That wouldn’t be very manly of me now would it’? I have my pride as a man to keep.

I know sweat was pouring of me like a broken pipe even though the air outside was slightly chilly. So when it tried to remove my hand from hers because it could be sweaty and kinda gross, of course it didn’t work because as I said before life’s a bitch and its out to get me. It wants me to die of embarrassment. “Um….. Lizzy would - …. Um- uh, my hand, would you let go please”, “you’re holding me….uh too tight”. Now I wanna hide in a corner, even my voice failed on me. Traitor. And what’s up with that brute strength of her.

“Sorry”, she said sitting up, not an ounce of sympathy in her voice. Her eye though looked awfully amused by my reaction or was it my pain. With a shake of my head, I turned to look at her again “you looked like you’d try to run away the moment I realised your arm”, this time she smiled when she spoke but it was more like a smirk. One that promised naughty things, as she scanned me from head to toe before releasing my hand and rising to her feet.

Sitting up, I wiped my sweaty hands on my jeans and looked up at her. She was just as beautiful as she was on the first day we met. Slim curvy body, peachy blond hair and don’t get me started on that that’s tucked snugly in those jeans. Wait why am I staring at her “hey Liz, where are you going?”  Shit, how’d she get that far without me noticing? “Wait up”, I shouted, running after her when she turned to look at me but I received no answer in return*.
