Until We Die

Nameless

...~Love is never wrong~...

I leaned against the bathroom door with the water running. It still didn't muffle her screams. I covered my ears knowing it wouldn't do much either. I sat quietly, not daring to make any other noises.

He'd hurt me too.

At times like these, I'm really glad I'm an only child. I closed my eyes tightly as I heard a piercing scream from my mother before it became deafeningly silent. I quickly shut the tap off, knowing he'd definitely be able to hear me now.

I heard the door slam shut but I still didn't dare to move because he'd be back. If he caught me trying to help her, he'd hurt me ten times worse than what he's done to my mother.

I bit my lip and counted to sixty once before waiting a moment and starting again before coming to the conclusion that he's left and won't be coming back anytime soon.

Gingerly, I cracked open the bathroom door and looked both ways before stepping out fully. My floral dress flowed beautifully as I tiptoed downstairs. Noticing a small tear on the sleeve, I frowned before making a mental note to sew it later.

"Mom?," I whispered before waiting a moment to hear any noise from her. She let out a groan. Quickly, I followed the sound to see her on the floor in the kitchen. I sat on the floor beside her and lifted her head gently before placing her in my lap. I ran my fingers through her hair and sang the same lullaby she's sang to me since I was a child.

She coughed interrupting me causing my hand movements to halt. "I'm sorry mom," I told her. "I tore your dress. Don't worry, I'll fix it," I reassured her. She gasped for air as she gripped my arms, most definitely causing that tiny little tear to widen.

"Hush little baby don't say a word," I sang quietly, silencing her as she attempted to speak. I let out a sigh as I stopped singing. I turned my attention towards the locked window.

There's a whole world out there that I've never seen. The only part of the huge world I've seen is my back garden and that isn't very pretty to look at. When I'm out there, supervised obviously by my dad, I hear the chatter of others from afar, for some strange reason people are really loud. I can never spot them but I can always hear them as they speak briefly about their day.

I slowly put my mothers head back on the ground. I stood up and dusted my dress off before picking up all the broken glass pieces off the ground.

This is my life. This is all I've ever known for the 18 years I've been on this earth. I've been confined to these walls since my birth, never allowed to communicate with other children my age. My mom did as best as she could with teaching me the basics of life. She taught me everything she could with the limited resources we have. She taught me how to read and write but it's been a while since I've done either of those so I don't think I remember how to do them.

She tells me stories of her childhood and school life. She tells me stories of her, her classmates and friends. She tells me random facts about her parents, my grandparents, since she and I haven't met them during my entire life on this earth. My father doesn't allow it. She tells me that if she could show me pictures she would.

My father doesn't spend money on us, only for our basic necessities so my mom learnt how to use old and spare materials to create something new. Just like the pretty floral dress I'm wearing. My mom hasn't been outside of the property since I was born.

The stories she tells me of life outside of this property makes me envious of her because she got to experience it all. I never will. She's also made me realize that our lifestyle isn't normal. The only people I've ever interacted with are my parents. We don't have a tv either because my dad can't afford it so I mostly spend my time tending to my wounds or sewing a new dress.

To my father I am nameless but to my mother I am Evangeline Kingston. I'm still not quite sure on how to spell it. My father refers to me as 'her' or 'bitch'. To him, I am a nobody, a nameless child.

My mom refused to answer me once when I had asked what 'bitch' means. I still don't know the exact definition but I know for sure it's not a good word.

Suddenly, I heard the door slam shut, telling me my father had arrived home. He didn't even acknowledge me as he walked straight past me and headed for the refrigerator. He pulled out a carton of orange juice and drank straight from the carton before putting back where it belongs.

I held a sigh inside as I got on my hands and knees, dirtying my dress in the process, as I scrubbed the blood off the tiled floor. A while later, my hands were raw and red from all the scrubbing but I knew I couldn't stop until I had gotten all the blood off the floor.

I flinched as I heard my mother groan in pain as he kicked her side harshly causing her to slam onto her stomach. I didn't dare to look towards them. I kept my eyes on the ground and scrubbed as hard as I possibly could.

My mothers childhood wasn't like this yet mine is. This is normal for me yet I know it's not normal for her.

"Get up," he mumbled as he pulled my mother up on her two feet. She winced, holding her side with one hand as the other gripped onto the counter for support once she was up. "I'm getting rid you," he spoke flatly. I turned to face him and furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, knowing full well he was talking to me.

Getting rid of me? What does that even mean?

You can't get rid of humans, right?

Strange Men

...~Don't chase, don't beg and don't stress~...

My father looked at me like a piece of dirt off the bottom of his shoe. Or is it a piece of gum on the bottom of his shoe? Either way, he was looking at me like he was disgusted. His mouth was moving yet I couldn't seem to hear what was coming out of it. Suddenly, my head snapped to the side as he landed a blow on my cheek.

That definitely brought me back to reality.

"When I speak to you, it means I want you to fuçking listen!," he yelled in my face making me glance at the floor.

He let out a deep breath as he took a step back. "He's coming for you tomorrow."

I bit my tongue, hard enough to cause me pain but not enough to make me bleed. I just needed to stay quiet. I wanted to ask my father who 'him' is. I wanted to ask what being rid of means. I didn't understand what was happening and why it was happening. All I know is that tomorrow I have to leave my home behind.

Suddenly, loud knocks sounded at the front door. My mother and I looked at each other shocked and terrified because that's the first time in 18 years that someone has knocked on the door. I held my breath as my father stalked towards it. My mother and I ran towards the entrance of the kitchen, peaking out through the doorway, trying to keep hidden.

It was a group of terrifying looking men. They were tall and muscular and each of them wore black suits. They were oddly handsome as the suits hugged them perfectly. They were pretty intimidating compared to my father.

I let out a breath as I realized this group of men are the first group of people I've ever seen.

My father spoke vividly and wildly as he threw his arms around him. The men seemingly getting bored of the conversation stormed into the house. One particular man in the middle caught my eye as he seemed to be the leader of the others. His eyes looked cold and calculating as he examined what's around him. He terrified me.

All five of the men looked alike in some way so I guessed they were siblings. The only difference between each of them was the tattoos on them. Some had visible tattoos like on their face or hands or neck but some didn't and each of them had different tattoos. My father has a tattoo on his arm.

My father followed behind them as they made their way toward the kitchen. My mother and I stumbled back as we tried to pretend we weren't watching them.

"Give me the girl," the leader spoke, his voice gruff yet firm. I hid my body behind my mothers, realizing they were here a day early for me. Out of nowhere, my father gripped my upper arm and pushed me forwards towards the group of men. My mother looked at me sadly as we were unable to say goodbye.

"My debt is clear?," my father confirmed in a questioning tone. The man nodded his head.

"Restrain her," he ordered one of the others. I watched curiously as one of the men pulled out these little plastic things that I've never seen before. He roughly grabbed my wrists and squeezed them together before wrapping the plastic thing around them and tightening it.

I stayed silent as I was tugged out of the house. I looked around me in awe as I saw the beautiful night sky filled with glistening stars. The road was empty with only two black cars. I've never seen a car nor have I ever sat in one.

I glanced at it nervously.

The man gripping my upper arm pushed me into the car. I slowly sat up properly and looked around. I was sat in the back with the strange man who's not the leader beside me. The leader and some other man sat in the front two seats. My breath hitched in my throat as I felt the engine of the car come to life.

I was terrified.

I closed my eyes tightly as the car began to move ahead. I could feel the man beside me staring at me with a confused expression on his face.

It was no secret that I was terrified of these men. It's mostly because these are the first people I've ever seen in my entire life other than my parents. I stayed silent, not asking him why he was looking at me confused because I didn't know how to ask him.

I opened my eyes. I stared of the window seeing people walking up and down the street, something I've never been able to see or do myself.

"She looks scared," he spoke to the men in the front. The leader glanced at me via the mirror hung from the ceiling of the car. I still don't understand what my father meant by getting rid me nor do I understand what he meant by 'my debt is clear?'. I don't understand what I'm doing here. Any sane person would be afraid of what's happening right now.

They didn't say anymore words and many hours later after I had fallen asleep, I had woken to complete darkness. I began to panic slightly as I thrashed around, kicking my legs out once I realized my wrists were still bound.

The man next to me rested his hands on my upper arms holding me down. It was then that I realized we were still in the car. "Calm down," he told me firmly.

I took some deep breaths and stopped moving. I've never had any issues with not listening to instructions. If you had a father like mine, you'd understand.

The man removed his hands and I was pulled out of the car. I hadn't realized the vehicle stopped moving. I was walking blindly trying carefully to make sure I was putting one foot in front of the other. The rocky ground beneath my feet hurt and was for sure making tiny little cuts but I didn't complain.

"Where the fuçk are her shoes?," someone asked. Shoes? I've never had the need for shoes. I've always stayed inside. My father wore shoes.

Before I knew it, a stranger had lifted me up over their shoulder. Their hand rested below my butt keeping me steady and keeping my dress down. With my hands bound and eyes covered, I felt nauseous as I hung upside down. This was new to me. All of this is new to me.

The wind whipping around us suddenly stopped as the atmosphere completely changed. I assume we entered a house as the shoes of the men clacked against the hard floor.

Suddenly, I was put back onto my own two feet. I swayed for a moment before the covering on my eyes was removed revealing light. I blinked not once but twice as I tried to see where I was. I was stood in the middle of a glamorous foyer. The little details in the walls were gold as the rest of the wall was some other colour I've never seen before. In front of me were two ginormous staircases, both meeting at the top with a golden handrail.

The men that stormed my house stood in front of me with icy glares directed towards me. I shrunk back almost like it was instinct. I was used to these looks because it's the way my father looks at me- used to look at me. I'm not sure if I'm going back home anytime soon.

The one who I assume is the leader stood forward, looking and clearly feeling confident. He opened his mouth to speak, "Welcome home, princess."

Nerves

...~Make your wants want you~...

Silently, I was led to a bedroom by someone who works here. Imagine working in a home. It's insane! The woman didn't say a word to me as she led me upstairs through many hallways until we stopped in front of a door. "This is your room," she simply said before she turned on her heels and walked back the way we came.

I opened the door and looked around. This room is much bigger than my bedroom at home. A four poster bed sat pushed up against the wall with a nightstand on either side of it. There was a collection of books on some shelves. Across that was two doors. Slowly, I walked towards them, not sure if I'm allowed to enter these rooms.

My hand rested on the door knob before turning it slowly. The door I opened led to a bathroom. Do I get my own bathroom? This bathroom was huge. It had both a shower and a bath separate. I closed that door and went to open the other one. It led me to a closet? It didn't look like a closet. It was its own little room. It had shelves lining the walls aswell as rails. In the middle of the room was a small couch.

This room is strange. I've never seen anything like it.

I must've been sat on the edge of the bed for hours staring into thin air until someone had come to collect me. The same woman from earlier demanded I follow her. I obeyed and stayed silent as we made our way through the palace. I would call this a house but it's more like a palace like the palaces princesses live in.

I was brought to a sort of meeting room. A large table sat in the middle of the room with chairs all around it. There was the same men from earlier but with two others I've yet to meet, not like I've met the others formally.

"Sit," the leader demanded. I sat in an empty chair beside the two men I haven't seen before. I couldn't help but stare at everyone's faces in awe. I've never seen this many people before. It's sort of overwhelming.

"What's her name?," one of them voiced out. I didn't say a word. Should I tell them what my mother called me or what my father called me? When no one else answered, the man turned to me. "What's your name?"

"I-I," I stammered, not knowing what to say. I was feeling nervous about talking to people.

"She doesn't know her own name?," one of them said questioningly with a slight snigger. The assumed leader stared at me, never moving his eyes.

"I-I," I tried to defend myself.

"Who doesn't know their own name!," another one exclaimed laughing. Suddenly, I found it hard to breath like the air was being sucked out of my lungs. I pulled on my dress as I tried to catch my breath.

They're laughing at me. Do they not like me? I'm confused. I'm terrified. I still don't know what's happening. This is all overwhelming.

Hands gripped my upper arms causing me to look towards the owner. It was the leader. "Breathe and count to ten," he ordered me. I took a deep breath.

One.

"Out loud," he spoke firmly.

"O-One," I panted out shakily. "T-Two." I paused for a moment taking a deep breath. "T-Three. Four. F-Five." Slowly but surely I could feel myself coming back to reality. "Six. S-Seven. Eight. N-Nine. Ten."

What just happened to me? It's never happened before.

One man had returned with a glass of water in his hand. I glanced around the room only to see everyone staring at me like I was an alien or something. They all stared at me strangely as I sat back down in the seat I was in previously. I slowly drank my water.

"I'm Aidan," the man I never met before introduced himself.

"I'm Elias," the other man introduced himself. Both of them looked alike with their facial structures but their build was different. Aidan seemed more muscular than Elias.

"M-My mother calls me Evangeline," I let out shakily.

"Pretty name," Aidan, I think, commented.

"Thanks."

"So Evangeline, you understand that you now belong to me?," the leader questioned placing both hands on the table as he stood opposite me, not sitting like me.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. I can't belong to him. I don't belong to him.

When I didn't answer, he clenched his jaw and stared into my soul. "You were given to me in exchange for something else." I didn't say a word as I looked at his face completely lost and clueless. He let out an annoyed sigh at my lack of knowledge. "Your father was in a lot of debt to me and to settle it, he gave me you. So now, he's debt free and you belong to me."

That made sense. My father just gave me away to save himself. Now I know for sure I won't be returning home anytime soon.

I belong to him which means he controls me, right? I hope not.

"I understand."

"Well, it's nice to meet you Evangeline. I'm Enzo," a man who looks almost identical to the leader spoke. Well, four of the men look identical to the leader other than Aidan and the other one, what's his name? Elias!

Enzo had no tattoos visibly on his hands or face compared to the others. Without warning, all the other men left the room without a word. "Don't mind them," Elias spoke before throwing an arm over my shoulders pulling me into him. I leaned against him uncomfortable and shy as he smiled down at me. "They're like that with everyone."

What does he mean by that?

"The guy who was talking the most is called Tobias," Enzo spoke referring to the leader. "He's my older brother."

Tobias. Such a pretty name.

"And the others you've seen are my brothers too. I'm the youngest." I nodded my head, feeling envious of the fact that he's got siblings and I don't.

"I've never heard of you before," Enzo commented. "We hear of people who are related to people that are involved with us but I've never once heard of you."

I've never once seen another person other my parents except for now, maybe that's why he's not heard of me.

Then again, I am the nameless child.
