*Volume 1*

It was dark.. I could only see myself talking to someone.. It was blurry..

Boy: "So its first April then,"

Girl : "yes, 7 years from now...I'll wait for u..

Boy: "don't forget.. I'll come back"

Girl:- "I wont.. it's a promise"....

That dream again!..

I went out of my room, felt kind of dizzy since I just woke up. I could see my mom waiting for me downstairs.

Mom:-"did I wake u up?"

Me:-" well no. Don't worry about that. Btw how's dad?"

"Ohh he is alright, don't worry about his health"

" Naah I meant.."

" Oh his mood? Don't worry I pressurized him since u asked me a favour. Although he is still in a bad mood, but he'll be alright. Afterall he grew up here. Anyways I'm late for the work. I'll better be going. Take care Haruto, spend these 5 days with your dad I'll be back soon. Also don't forget to take the gift to doctor Ichiri's clinic"

" sure mom. Take care.."

" .. um.. Haruto, is there anything that you want to ask before I leave?"

"huh? ..no ..I mean I have nothing in my mind to ask you about."

".. okay then.. I'm leaving. Don't forget to do your assignment in the spring break. Bye"

"yea mom. Bye"

I am Haruto Soraki and I was adopted by them. And since then I live with them. I have no memories of my life before being adopted, and when I asked my mom about where was I and what was I doing? She just answered two things. First that I was born in this town and the other that we met in a hospital in this town. I didn't ask anything more bcus she was in a pain to answer anything about that. Since then I've had dreams about that promise which I made 7 years ago to girl whose name and face I don't remember. It's March 29 now 4 days before the actual date of promise. And I've come here to recollect those memories and of what happened 7 years ago...

'I'm pretty much stuck up here with my dad now. Guess I'll go to that hospital, maybe I'll recollect or get something which might be of help'. So I went out and then I remembered that I had to visit dr. Ichiri's clinic. I went inside the clinic which was near my home.

I saw a receptionist there.

Me: "excuse me, my name is Haruto. I've been told by my parents to meet the doctor."

Receptionist:- " ah, yes yes. I've been informed about you. The doctor is waiting inside. U may go."

So I went in to his cabin. I saw a tall, thin man with a fair skin and his hair were grey. He was around his 50's or so. His eyes reminded me of sapphire.

Doc : " Hello, you must be Haruto. Please come in"

Me: " hello dr. Ichiri . Here is a small gift from my town. My mom asked me to give it to you."

" Oh thanks a lot"

He went and kept that gift inside the desk.

Me: " doctor, may I ask you how did you meet up with my parents?"

Doc: " ohh well that was in the past. I met them in the hospital. Infact it's not the first time we have met"

" really? Oh well I don't remember anything about that . Sort of memory loss I guess.'"

" I see."

" do you remember anything about me or any incident?"

" not much of a help. It's been a long time sorry."

" no problem. Guess I'll go back home"

As I was leaving the room ,the doctor called me up

"Well hold on. U've come up so far ,y don't u have a checkup. Free of cost ofcourse."

" no no I'm alright."

" u've travelled up here yesterday. U must be tired. Is there anything troubling u?"

" No doctor. I'm absolutely fine. Just had a tooth ache since two days."

"Ahh I see. Open ur mouth. Umm that looks a pain . Hold on I'll give u something."

The doctor went to his shelf and took out a liquid.

" well this should work. Also don't tell ur parents that I gave u this. U see worst case I'll end up being arrested"

"Huh?? Is that bad? I mean is it so dangerous?"

" Nah nah just kidding about being arrested. But technically, I'm not supposed to give u this, so just keep it between us."

" O-ohh. O-okay "

I drank up the medicine. It had a strong smell. And a horrible taste.

" Well it does have a strong smell."

As he was talking I felt kind of dizzy and tired. I could see my eyes getting blurred.

" And yes don't worry that will be fine. Hold on. Are u alright? U look tired. Hey boy?. Looks like you have been traveling a lot. Are u-

I spaced out. It was all black....

“… -ruto. Haruto? “.

I woke up cus of the doctor’s voice.

“Are u alright?”

“ y-yea yea. I’m fine. Just a bit exhausted I guess”

“Yea. You seemed a bit off. What day is today?”

“its 29 March, Monday right?”

“Hmm good . Looks like you are fine. Anyways, did u have something to do after this?”

“Yea I was thinking to visit the hospital.”

“ohh, okay. Also, I have something to give ur parents but I think that’ll be on ur way. Y don’t u come up later . And that will help me recollect something too , I mean talking to you I might get me something . Uk I’m growing old haha “

“ y-yea sure then. I’ll see you later “

I went out. It was really strange. I wonder if I’m alright. With this I went out of the clinic and headed towards the hospital.

The hospital was huge. Not much of people to wander around. It had a huge garden outside. That was the only thing which was beautiful. I went inside. To my surprise , the smell was nostalgic. There was a familiar scent. I sat on a chair.

Everything blacked out again.

I saw a girl same as of my age.( 7 years ago). she had a golden yellowish hair. And a huge red hair ribbon. Her eyes were light blue..

Aoi:- heeeeeey ? Are u even listening?

Me:-“ ohh yea yea say. “

“Im so excited to see it! I can’t wait”

“Well yea me too!”

“but we can’t see the meteor shower from here. It’s visible from my room”

“Lets go there “

I followed her. It was a huge room with large windows. The sky was clear up from here.

She looked a bit off and tired. I asked her.

Me:- “ hey aoi, u alright? U don’t look fine”

Aoi:- “ yes yes I’m fine. Don’t worry.

“ tell me if anything is wrong.”

“that’s kind of u but even so, there is nobody in this building right now.”

“maybe we can call them from those call buttons? But there are two of them. Blue and Red.”

“ yea, don’t worry it should be me who should look after you. So I’ll be the one pressing them”

I laughed and said

Me:-“ what is this a race? Anyways it should be the colour that u like”

Aoi:- “ well thats strange.. anyways I’m good now. Let’s just wait”

“Yea”

While waiting ,I didn’t realise that i slept. When I woke up. Aoi was lying on the ground. Her face looked red. I checked her temperature. She was warm. I could make out she had a fever. I rushed immediately and pressed the blue button.

Nurse on call:-“ yes?”

Me:- “ this is Haruto from second floor, building 2. Aoi isn’t well she has a high fever “

“Haruto! What are u doing there? We have been looking for u. Fine stay there the doctors are coming”

And then I went to check on her.

Me:- “ aoi!! Aoi! Get up. You  have a fever. I kee something was wrong”

Aoi:- “S-sorry Haruto. …Looks like we …can’t see the meteor shower…”

“don’t worrry about that. We’ll see it next time and now take rest I’ve called the nurse.”

“Which button did u press?”

“ the blue one”

“Ohh… but I liked the red one”

“next time it’s red then”

“ i-idoit , …n-next time it’ll be me who’ll press.....Next time huh?”

“… what’s wrong?”

“ Nothing. Flowers would be nice”

“ Flowers??”….

I woke up. Those were my memories. So the girl’s name was aoi. That is what I assume. Damn it ,I can’t remember anything more. I decided to ask the staffs and people around. It’s better to ask about Dr. Ichiri too. So I went around asking them. First was a nurse. Instead of answering she herself asked me whether I was a patient here. Next there were two people talking. I didn’t bother to ask them. But what I heard was that they were talking about some paranormal activities and their rumours in the hospital. I simply passed by. I asked few nurses but they seemed to be working since a few years only. I couldn’t find anybody who were here since 7 years. I went outside and saw a man painting the sign boards. I asked him too, but he didn’t say anything. Right next to it, was building 2. There was a staff outside. While asking her things, I saw a man with a hat and coat, he was walking to the entrance, and the painter had spilled some paint on his coat accidentally. So the staff I was talking to, rushed towards them to apologise. Quite a small disturbance. Failed to ask anything, I sat on the chair near an old man.

He had a small moustache And wore a hat.

Old man :- “ u r the kid asking around people right?”

Me:- “ y-yea. Did I make it so obvious?”

“ no no I was just watching u”

“ Well actually I was looking out for people who are here for a quite long time. I don’t remember anything about the past. There might have been some incident here”

“ accidents? Yes yes, u mean the Nishikata explosion?”

“Y-yes maybe that’s the thing”

“ well yea boy, I might look old ,but I was quite the journalist back then. I always believed the accidents were fishy up here. I firmly believe that it was no accident. After all many people died and the press didn’t release anything to the public. One day I’ll get to it’s bottom”

“ ohh! When did this happen?”

“ What are u at kid? It happened right here 7 years ago….”

I went back home. I really couldn’t get anything about the past. Moreover that old man had to go for a check up .’well guess I’ll sleep now...

Ohhh! I totally forgot that I had to go to dr. Ichiri's clinic, but it’s too late right now. I’ll go tomorrow'. And then I slept.

The next day..

30 March , Tuesday

I went straight to his clinic only to find that it was closed. ‘its closed? Weird..’ I decided to go to the hospital again to look up for more information.

As I was in the garden, I saw the nurse who was quite good to me yesterday. I decided to ask her about the incident.

Nurse:- “ aren’t u the kid who was asking around things ? “

She laughed.

Me: “ yes yes, well I actually wanted to ask u about an incident that took place years ago”

“ohh that incident. Hmm. What do u wanna know about?”

“ but u look busy , is it a good time to talk?”

“ yes yes. I just finished my work and was heading home anyway. So what do u wanna ask?”

“ tell me every---”

Just then ,a boy around my age with a light brown hair quite taller than me, came up and was surprised to see me.

The boy :-“ hold on a second!!! Aren’t u Haruto!! “

Me :” y-yea?”

“ longgg timmmee man! It’s been how much? 7 no 8 years!. How have u been?”

I was still confused..

The nurse said “ well looks like ur friend has arrived. I’ll get going then. See ya later”

Me:- “ yea sure”

The boy :- “ y do u look confused?”

Me:- “ umm sorry I don’t remember u..”

Boy:- “… whattttt!!!? For real??”

“ Yes. It’s like my memories from those time has been lost. I’m really sorry.”

“Are u serious?”

“y-yea”

“ ohh”

“ Umm may ask ur name? And I assume we were friends?”

“ … “

“ Sorry but I really don’t remember anything”

“ Ahh no problem it’s alright!. My name is Riku. Riku Imaaki. And yes we’ve played here a lot, when we were kids..”

“ Ohh!! Thank god I’ve been looking up for someone who  was here from around 7 years. I had no luck. Can u tell me about the past?”

“ Yes of course! Well before that . Let’s have a quick bite shall we?”

“ yea sure “

And then we went up near the canteen.

Riku: “ so what do u wanna know?”

Me: “ it’s that I made a promise to someone. I just want to know where and who it was”

“ Well I still need more clue”

“ I think her name was Aoi. But I don’t remember much about her?”

“ohh so u remember Aoi? “

“ not really. I don’t know anything”

“ Well then it must be her whom u made promise to.. since u guys were close so..”

“ does she lives in this town?”

“… well.. I don’t know much about it. I left the town quite before too”

“ Did u move out bcus of that incident?”

“ no no. I moved before that happened.”

“ I see.. well.. do u know why I was admit---”

“ wait Haruto. I want to ask u few things too.. like where have u been and where do u stay?”

“ I live with my parents in Tokyo. I was adopted by them and I came here as I had spring breaks.”

“ adopted? Since when?”

“ I really don’t know.. I don’t remember”

“ and where do ur parents stay? Their occupation? Names?”

“ well they are originally from this town but anyways what with this y are u asking these anyways?”

“U really don’t remember anything?”

“ no man I’m serious”

“ I see … well it’s alright .. follow me.”

And so I followed him inside the building 2.

He went up to the staff.

Riku : “ it’s Riku Imaaki..”

Riku went to enter the sign-in register.

And then, I had this familiar smell again.

‘ what’s this? It’s nostalgic' is what I thought… I closed my eyes again..

I saw a younger version of me and riku.

Riku:- “…. I told that to Kakeru as well “

Me:- “ well? What did he say?”

“ He told not to worry about me and to do what I want”

“I see”

“ Haruto. That’s y I decided to go. Keep being good friends with my brother. Would u?”

“of course! Leave him to me. But are u really gonna be ok , moving to a new school?”

“ I might be a little bit scared..”

“ now look who’s worried haha..but u’ll have a new dad huh?”

“don’t mention them, my mom, my dad and my new dad aren’t my family… and if I was an adult. I would have taken Kakeru with me. And of course u too”

“Well lately there have been may tests.. it’s been the same with Aoi and others too”

“Yea.. “

“ Well I’m a tag along now? Haha . Anyways Riku, are u sure u’ll be alright. U won’t be seeing certain someone .”

“H-huh? .w-what are talking about?”

“ Riku. Don’t play dumb”

“S-shut up! I’ll be fine”

“ Anyways I’ll be a bit lonely here. “

“ don’t worry I’ll come back.”

“ and when u do. Don’t forget about the fried rice “

“Ohh yes ofcourse. It’s a promise then.”

“ Wait are we promising about ur return? Or is the food?”

“ Of course it’s the food dumb Haruto”

We bust in laughter

I opened up my eyes. And saw Riku returning back from the desk.

Riku: “ well let’s go “

I followed him. We went upstairs to room inside. I saw a young boy. With the same hair color as mine, was sleeping on the bed.

Riku:” Hey u asleep?... Looks like he is sleeping.. he is my little brother.”

Me:” ohh u mean kakeru?”

“ Yeaa u remember him?”

“ Yea I mean jus now I had a flashback”

“I see….well he is asleep . Lately, he has been sleeping a lot. It’s the early symptoms of a disease called LMD”.

“ LMD? “ I asked

“ yea . Once the LMD actually shows up. Then he would have 2 years or so”

“ whaattt??! Isn’t there any treatment?”

“ there is none”

I was speechless. I didn’t say anything. But I saw Riku was tolerating his pain. It’s been hard for him.

Riku:- ” let’s go out”

I followed him. Just as we got down, he spoke.

Riku:- “ U know what.. we’ve played here a lot!. There are still drawings that were made by u, me and kakeru.”

Me:- “ sorry Riku. I don’t remember anything.”

He said nothing about it.

Riku :” u always went out in the garden saying u wanted fresh air”

Me:-“I did?”

“ yes..”

There was a moment of silence again.. to break it.. I asked him

Me:- “ hey Riku.. do ---”

He interrupted me ..

“ hey Haruto!.. u’ve asked about Aoi right?”

“ yea?”

“ Well… she died 7 years ago.. "

“… what?!”

I was surprised. Shocked to hear the word 'died', that too, someone whom I made a promise with.

Riku:- “ and …. Who exactly..

are u??”
