Road To Red

Road to Kuroko city.

In a world where many species coexisted, a clan in Miroi City held a unique tradition.

The rare individuals who carried the blood of multiple species were known as the "Kisuki." For generations, the Kibishi Clan sought to create the strongest descendant—one who could inherit the combined powers of a witch, a werewolf, and a vampire. The Perfect Kisuki.

After many attempts, they came close to achieving their goal. But everything changed when Haruko, a promising descendant with the blood of both vampire and werewolf, fell in love with a human.

Humans were ordinary creatures. They didn’t have the strength of werewolves, the battle magic of vampires, or the healing abilities of witches. Breeding with a human was considered a dangerous taboo. Adding human blood to the clan’s lineage would only weaken it—or so the Kibishi believed.

Disowned by her family for defying this tradition, Haruko left Miroi City with her human husband, Minato, and started a new life in Kuroko City.

There, they had a daughter named Muroi. She carried an unusual mix of traits: 70% werewolf, 11% vampire, 17% human, and 2% witch. How she inherited even a trace of witch blood remained a mystery. Her parents, however, saw it as a blessing and never questioned it further.

Chapter 1: Road to Kuroko City

Early in the morning, a white-haired girl with a red streak in her hair walked down the road, yawning.

(First day of high school, and instead of being excited, I feel like I need a nap.)

To secure a better education, Muroi had transferred to Damne Academy, one of the most prestigious schools in the region. Unfortunately, it was also a school heavily dominated by vampires.

(Why did it have to be vampires?) she thought, suppressing a groan.

The school’s founder, the honored and respected Damnero Ritero, who was himself a vampire. Muroi had spent hours researching the academy, hoping to be prepared.

(Looking back, that was probably a huge waste of time.)

Flashback: A few days earlier…

“Muroi, honey, you have to go! It’s for your future!” Haruko pleaded, clasping her hands together.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, dear mother, but I’m not about to risk my life in a school full of bloodthirsty vampires.” Muroi replied, traces of sarcasm in her voice.

Haruko frowned. “But you’re part vampire yourself! I told you that already.”

“Yes, and I have human blood too, remember? Any other species would think I’m just a regular human—I even smell like one!”

(Despite being only 17%, my scent is mostly human. Lucky me.)

Haruko waved off her concerns. “That’s not a big deal! You’re tough—probably even a little crazy.”

Muroi arched a brow. “Is that supposed to be a compliment?”

Haruko sighed and shot a glance at Minato, who was quietly reading in the corner. “Minato, why won’t you help me convince her?”

Minato barely looked up from his book. “You’re the one who wanted to send her there. Why are you dragging me into this?”

Haruko huffed and turned back to Muroi with a desperate look. “Do you remember how you used to try and bite the neighbor’s hand when you were tired? He was a werewolf too! You seriously thought biting him would give you energy.”

(Here we go again.) Muroi rolled her eyes. (She always brings up stories of my childhood—and she won’t stop until she gets what she wants.)

Chapter 2: Road to Damne Academy

"...I was just a kid back then," Muroi muttered.

“And what about the time you craved human blood and bit yourself because you smell like one? You bit so deep we had to rush you to a top-class witch for healing!”

“That’s your fault for starving me! How could you forget to collect the blood and leave it in the mail?”

[In this world, human blood is collected and distributed by the government to werewolves and vampires. Humans receive rewards for their donations, which keep both vampires and werewolves under control.]

“That’s beside the point,” Haruko said, brushing her off. “Anyway, remember that other time when you—”

“Okay, okay! Enough! I’ll go.”

“Thank you, Muroi-chan!”

Haruko patted Muroi’s head like she was still a little girl.

“Don’t treat me like a kid!”

(After all that nagging, I finally submitted my Afteradmission documents and completed the survey.)

(The acceptance rate is ridiculously low. I thought it was impossible to get in—but somehow, I made it.)

A Few Days Later

“Goodbye, Muroi-chan!” Haruko called cheerfully.

“Bye, Mom,” Muroi replied with a sigh.

“Please, please don’t cause any trouble on your first day! I’m begging you.”

“I’ll try not to, Dad.”

Minoto narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean try? That sounds like you’re already planning to!”

“Yeah, yeah. Sure, Dad,” Muroi mumbled, waving him off.

Present Day

huff huff

(I thought walking to school would be refreshing... Guess not.)

Just as Muroi reached the towering gate of Damne Academy, she heard a voice call out to her.

“Hey! You, over there!”

She turned to see a blonde-haired guy waving in her direction.

“Huh?”

“Yeah, you! The sleepyhead!” he said, jogging over to her.

“Excuse me?” she mumbled, still catching her breath.

“You’re the new student, right?”

Muroi blinked. “Aren’t there any other new students besides me?”

The blonde boy grinned. “Nope. You’re the only one who made it this year. Aren’t you happy?”

(The only one?! I figured at least five people would get in... I didn’t think the acceptance rate was that bad.)

The boy continued, “Apparently, none of the other applicants passed the survey or whatever. The higher-ups picked the top five candidates and drew lots. You got lucky, contestant number five!”

“…Is that so?” Muroi muttered, still processing.

“Oh! Where are my manners?” the boy said, suddenly energetic. “Name’s Marit Broar—I’m the vice student council president.”

Muroi raised an eyebrow. “Who’s the student council president?”

Marit smirked. “Not telling. You gotta introduce yourself first—those are the rules.”

Muroi sighed. “Fine. Kibishi Muroi. I was born in Kuroko City, but my parents are from Miroi.”

Marit’s eyes widened slightly. “Whoa! So you’re technically a Miroian? That’s rare. You’re the first and only one here, y’know?”

“The only one?” Muroi frowned. “There aren’t any other Miroians here?”

“Not a single one.”

(That’s weird... I thought people would be fighting to get in, considering how prestigious this place is.)

Chapter 3: Road to the Abandoned House I

“Anyway, the student council president right now is Ruroi Duenos. He’s a vampire from a noble family, and he practically runs the school—everyone follows his every command without question. I’m his best friend, by the way. And no, I can’t introduce you to him.”

“I’m not interested in him. I don’t even know who he is.”

Marit chuckled. “Relax, I was just kidding! No need to take it so seriously.”

“Don’t you have anything better to do than waste your time here?”

“I’m not wasting time. Ruroi-kun told me to handle the new kid.”

(Kid?! I don't care who he thinks he is—I swear, I’m gonna knock his teeth out if he keeps calling me that.)

“So… how exactly are you supposed to ‘handle’ me?”

“With a tour, of course!”

“A tour?”

“Yup! You arrived pretty early, so you’ve got time. I’ll show you around the place while we walk—standing at the front gate all morning isn’t exactly the best idea.”

After the Tour

“So, what do you think?”

“Thanks for the tour, but I don’t see why it was necessary. Can you just tell me what class I’m in?”

“Oh, right! Gimme a sec.”

(So far, life here seems manageable...)

Marit glanced at a list and grinned. “Well, well. Looks like you’ve got some serious luck!”

“What kind of luck?”

“You’re in Class C1—same class as the prez!”

“And how exactly is that ‘good luck’?”

“Well... let’s just say most of the girls here would kill to be in your spot.”

“Even if they’re new?”

“Yup! A lot of students applied here just because of him. He’s pretty famous outside of school, too—but honestly, it’s more about his looks than his achievements.”

Muroi rolled her eyes. “What is he? Astonishingly good-looking? Drop-dead gorgeous or something?”

Marit laughed. “Well, yeah. He does have some pretty impressive looks.”

“Sorry to disappoint, but I don’t find good-looking people all that interesting.”

“That’s a shame,” a calm voice interrupted.

Muroi turned to see a brown-haired guy approaching them.

“I’d prefer if you didn’t talk about my appearance so openly,” he said.

Marit’s face paled. “Shush! That’s the council prez, you idiot!”

Muroi crossed her arms. “Who’s supposed to be the idiot here?”

Ruroi ignored the jab. “You should head back now, Marit. Classes are about to start.”

“Got it! I’ll leave her to you, then!” Marit said with a grin, already walking off.

Muroi waved him off. “I can get to class on my own, you know.”

Ruroi shrugged. “I’m not escorting you. We’re in the same class, so we’ll end up taking the same route.”

(Great. Way to ruin my mood.)

After School

(Man, I’m exhausted… but also kinda bored.)

As Muroi walked home, she spotted an abandoned house just off the road, one probably didn't notice when she was heading to school, half-asleep.

(Perfect. I was in the mood for something like this.)

With a grin, she crossed the street and approached the rundown building.

(Looks quiet. No one’s around…)

She reached for the doorknob, but wrinkled her nose. (Ugh, it’s all rusty. I’m not touching that.)

Without hesitation, Muroi kicked the door. It swung open with a loud creak, revealing an old staircase leading up into the darkness.

(This looks fun.)
