Marian was sound asleep in her house when her cell phone rang; it was another one of those calls.
"Marian, Peter is cheating on you. I'm going to send you the address of where he is so you can catch him," she heard the woman say on the other end of the line.
Ever since she married him three years ago, it was common for her to receive those calls telling her about her husband's outings. Sometimes she would go to see if it was true, but she had never been able to find any evidence against him.
After an hour of thinking and rethinking the situation, she decided to go see if it was true. She grabbed her purse and left in her car.
When she arrived at the hotel they had told her, she went to the lobby. There, they gave her a key and the room number where her husband supposedly was, which she found incredible and made her wonder why someone would want her to see her husband being unfaithful.
She found the room number and stopped in front of it. She took a deep breath and gathered the strength to go in. She felt her heart beating fast and her hands were sweating. She tried to hear any noise inside the room, but she didn't hear anything at all.
She swiped the card they gave her and opened the door, noticing that the room was completely dark. She didn't see Peter anywhere, which made her feel calmer.
When she was about to leave the room, she felt someone grab her hand and pull her inside, which startled her until she smelled a familiar scent.
He grabbed her and put her back against the wall, putting his male body very close. Their faces were so close that she could feel his warmth.
"Peter!" she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
It was him. Even though he was an extremely handsome man, his gaze was icy, and she knew it well. He was wearing a tailored black suit that highlighted his sculpted figure.
His arms were on either side of her, preventing her from running away. His eyes were quite red, and his breathing was heavy.
"I have to say that I expected anything from you, but I never thought you would be capable of drugging me," she had just arrived, she couldn't have done it.
"I... no... it wasn't me," the words wouldn't come out.
"Do you think you'll have sex with me using such a low trick? Don't tell me that now you'll try to get pregnant by me so I'll treat you like a wife," the man laughed bitterly.
She hadn't seen him for two months, and she had only gone there because of a call she had received in the middle of the night.
He took her chin and made her look him directly in the eyes. His smile gave her fear and sadness at the same time.
Unable to defend herself, he picked her up and threw her on the bed. His face showed no emotion, and he began to undress, while she tried to get out of there, but he always grabbed her and threw her back on the bed.
Suddenly, he took her clothes and began to tear them, leaving her completely naked. He kissed her forcefully and violently, while she pushed him, trying to break free from his grip, but she didn't succeed, so in the end, she stopped fighting.
The sex was fast and painful. It was her first time, and it had been the most terrible and humiliating moment of her life. She always thought that moment would be special and romantic, but it was the opposite, and that hurt her physically and emotionally.
"Was that what you wanted? I hope it was everything you always wanted," his voice had no emotion.
He got up, dressed, and before leaving, he took some pills to throw them on the bed.
"Take them," he didn't even look at her.
"Do you hate me that much?" she asked through tears.
"You don't have what it takes to be the mother of my children," after saying that, he left the room, leaving her there with a broken heart.
It had been her mother-in-law who had called her to go look for Peter, and it had been she who had planned all this.
After three years of marriage, they had had relations for the first time, and he had given her a couple of morning-after pills. For ten years she had loved him and had done everything possible to make him love her, but she had only achieved the opposite.
He thought the worst of her, and despite everything, he had never had a positive thought towards her. She always thought she would succeed, that she would get him to love her even a little, and at that moment she had realized that she would never succeed.
She took the pills without thinking twice. She stayed in the room watching the door where he had left, thinking about how her marriage had ended at that very moment.
In the Martin's house, Barbara Martin is found sitting elegantly with a cup of coffee in her hands, gathered with her daughter-in-law.
"Saturday is Peter's birthday, do you have his gift yet?" Barbara asked Marian.
"I've already prepared something for him, and I'm sure he'll like it." Marian's expression revealed none of the feelings she had at that moment.
"I recommend you take advantage of this opportunity, maybe you'll finally manage to get pregnant after the birthday party." Barbara gave her a soft smile and took a sip of coffee.
"It's possible." Her voice sounded calm, although she had a lot of doubts in her mind.
The day of Peter's birthday celebration arrived, and the long-awaited Mrs. Martin did not arrive at the family home for the party, so the guests began to talk in hushed tones, all wondering if the recent marriage was coming to an end.
All night, Peter's expression was terrible, he was serious the whole time, and as soon as the guests left, he went straight back to his house. Upon arrival, he was greeted by the house butler.
"Where's Marian?" was the only thing he replied.
"The lady has had a headache and is resting in her room." The man was as serious as his boss.
As he climbed the stairs to the second floor, he was taking off his tie, wondering what new deception that terrible woman would come up with. So when he arrived at her room, they almost collided, Marian was coming out and stopped abruptly.
"May I know what you've been doing? Why didn't you go to the celebration at my parents' house?" The man was quite upset, he hated having her close.
"Happy birthday, Peter." She took her wedding ring from a black box and handed it to him.
She had a soft smile, as if she was really happy to see him, leaving him totally bewildered. He took the small box and knew what it contained.
"I was waiting for you to give you your birthday gift, here are our divorce papers, I've already signed them, all that's left is for you to sign them and give them to the lawyer, you're completely free." Those words left Peter in total silence.
He didn't understand anything, she was supposed to have married him for his money, and now she was giving him the divorce without even fighting, she must have something up her sleeve.
"I'm not going to give you a single cent of my family's money." She turned to look at him for the first time all night.
"That issue has already been discussed with your father, I don't want anything from your family, not even you." She let out a soft laugh.
Now he understood even less what was happening, for him she had wrapped his father around her finger so that he would force him to marry her, if he didn't, all the family wealth would be donated to charity, so it was impossible for such a selfish woman to give up and renounce her marriage voluntarily.
"Are you serious?" He still didn't believe her words.
She didn't look at him, hearing his voice a lot of images passed through her mind and among those was the moment when he threw the pills on the bed, his actions had led her to make that decision.
Three years of disappointments had passed and she had lost all hope that he would look at her with affection, while she had loved him from the moment she had first seen him, but he never felt the same for her.
She felt that her love had been only on her part and that maybe she had made the wrong decision, somewhere was the man who was going to love her so much that she would forget all these years of sadness and despair.
Marian continued on her way without looking back, she would seek her happiness no matter what, she felt that she had lost ten years of her life behind an unrequited love and it was time to start over.
*******
Four years have passed, the plane flies over the city while Marian observes the landscape through the window, she can notice that there have been changes, now there are some skyscrapers, but for her it is just the place that saw her born and grow up.
When the plane landed, it took her out of her reverie and she turned to see the little girl next to her, she was a beautiful girl with jet black hair and soft curls at the ends, her eyes were blue and big, which showed curiosity about the world.
"We're home, Abi, when we get to Aunt Alexa's house we'll eat something." She was unfastening her seatbelt.
Upon leaving the airport, they took a taxi to her best friend's house, when they arrived, Alexa was waiting for them at the door of the building where she lived, upon seeing them, she took little Abigail and hugged her to give her a lot of kisses on her cheeks.
"I finally get to meet this little one in person! You're prettier in person than in the videos and you look a lot like you." Abigail was a small version of Marian.
She felt that having Abigail was the best decision she had made in her life, when they went up to the apartment, the food was already ready and the three of them ate together, that reunion filled the two women with happiness.
The little girl was a little tired from the flight, so she fell asleep on the sofa while Marian and Alexa talked.
"Does Abigail really have three years?, she seems smaller." Alexa saw her with concern.
It was true, Abigail had always been smaller than the other children, which had been Marian's biggest concern since the girl was born, the pregnancy had been difficult and she was born before the expected date, at the same time she spoke little and did not relate well with other children.
"Maybe it's not so bad, so when they see her they'll think she's younger." She looked thoughtful.
Two days passed and Marian found a kindergarten for little Abigail and began working in a law firm, while she had been out of the country she had finished her law degree and could work to give her daughter everything she needed.
While she had been away, she had dedicated herself to her studies while taking as many courses as she could, so her resume was excellent.
Marian went to the company and, since the case was not very difficult, she was able to resolve it quickly after a conversation in the human resources department, so when she finished, she put away all her things and went to the elevator.
As she exited the elevator, she saw a crowd of people surrounding a man. She was a little curious to see who this person was who had such a large welcoming committee. As she approached, she saw a tall, elegant man with a rather proud demeanor. It was none other than Peter Martin.
Physically, he was the same man she had left four years ago, tall, with light brown hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. He looked as proud and arrogant as the last time she saw him, and a shiver ran down her spine.
She could see one of the men accompanying him explaining some details about various renovations made to the entrance structure and explaining the benefits of investing in his company.
The crowd of people was right where she was passing by. Peter's expression was cold when he saw her. She thought about continuing to walk, but without knowing why, her feet simply stopped and their eyes met.
In recent years, she had fantasized about seeing Peter again a million times, but it was not the same as having him there face to face. She felt her heart stop for a second, and she had to remember to breathe. That day, she expected anything to happen except seeing that man again.
Four years was a long time, but it had not erased any of the memories she had of him.
"Marian?" he said after approaching her and looking her up and down, feeling that the woman in front of him was a completely different person.
"It's been a long time since I've seen you, Peter," she said with a polite smile.
The man did not respond, his face immediately becoming serious.
"How are your parents?" she asked, trying to direct the attention to something else.
"They are fine," Peter's voice sounded cold.
"I'm glad, tell them I'll visit them one of these days. It was nice seeing you," she gave him a slight smile and left.
She felt her hands trembling and sweating horribly, but she tried to appear confident and secure in front of him, walking calmly, while he stood watching her leave that place in the same way he had three years ago.
"Mr. Martin?" said the owner of the company.
Peter continued with the visit he was making, although his thoughts were only on Marian and her abandonment three years ago.
That day, after leaving work, Marian went to pick up her little daughter from kindergarten. She was the last one there, and when the girl saw her mother, a big smile appeared on her face, as she ran to hug her.
The teacher was very happy with Abigail's behavior. The girl behaved very well and was very obedient.
A couple of days later, Marian felt more secure in her job and liked what she was doing. In the afternoon, she received the call she had been waiting for. It was Oscar Spencer.
He was Peter's cousin and a good friend of hers and Alexa's. They studied together for many years and always had a close relationship.
"Is the matter of my new house ready?" she asked as soon as she answered the phone.
"I haven't been able to achieve it. There's something you should know, and I hope you don't get angry," she accepted, thinking he hadn't been able to get the house she had chosen.
"It is not advisable for you to buy a house since you have not yet divorced," Oscar's voice was cautious.
"What?! There must be a mistake! That's impossible!" she couldn't believe it.
Four years ago, she had left Peter's lawyer the signed divorce papers. She always thought he would rush to file them to be free and have nothing to do with her. On the other end of the line, Oscar sighed, knowing that Marian would not like the news at all.
She was so upset that she asked for the afternoon off and went to the civil affairs office where they confirmed that she was still married to Peter. She didn't understand anything. That man hated her and kept telling her that he wanted to get away from her, so why didn't he accept the freedom she was giving him without any problems.
She thought things over and took all the documents to go to the Galaxy building. When she arrived, the receptionist did not let her in because she had to have an appointment to pass, so she took her phone and although she did not have the number saved in the phone, she knew it by heart.
That number was one of those things that, despite the passage of time, you always remember. It's as if she had it tattooed in her memory, and it was one of those things that she would never admit, in fact she remembered everything that related her to Peter.
She heard the phone ring once, twice, three times, and finally it was answered.
"Peter, it's me, Marian," she heard silence on the other end of the line.
At that moment, she looked towards the entrance and saw Ethan Wright entering the building. He saw her and his face of astonishment was evident, so she hung up the phone and went to greet him.
"When did you come back?" he asked her when he saw her.
"A few days ago," she replied calmly.
"Are you looking for Peter?" she nodded and he let her in.
When they arrived at the office, they could see that he was busy reviewing some documents. He looked at Ethan and did not realize that Marian was coming in behind him.
"Peter, Marian is here and needs to talk to you," he said goodbye to her and left the office.
"Were you the one who called me a while ago?" he asked with annoyance.
"Why aren't we divorced? We were supposed to be divorced right now," she handed him the documents that had been given to her at the civil affairs office.
"I don't want you to call me again," was his response while looking at the documents she was showing him.
"Give me the documents and I'll file them at the civil affairs office," she was furious with his behavior.
"I think you always want things to be done your way," he replied.
She did everything possible for them to get married and years later she left him, leaving without saying where, did she really think that things would be done her way?
