"It's so hot today, the movie was a lot better than I hoped it'd be."
I was on my way back from the movies with my younger sister, Rena Tokito.
My name is Kyte Tokito, and I'm a second-year college student. Being a nerd and an otaku made it difficult for me to make friends in middle school. Having lost both of our parents in a plane crash, my sister and I grew up under the care of our relatives and we are very close. She used to cry at night whenever she missed our parents so I had to sing her a lullaby every night.
We were both looking forward to this day, the 3rd day of the Equinox month which is the 10th and last month of the year. This day was named as a worldwide holiday to celebrate the efforts of an organization that fought and brought peace to the world.
On this day, there were countless festivals and concerts and the streets were very crowded. To be honest I hated this day because of this but Rena wanted us to go watch movies and to festivals.
As we were walking on the street, Rena saw an ad for a movie that was scheduled for later today at a cinema that was a few blocks away.
"Big brother, look at this. It's 'The Wicked Princess' movie, it's finally out, can we go watch it."
She said so with a cute smile on her face. The movie she wanted us to watch was about a beautiful princess who became evil because she envied her peasant friend. I couldn't believe it when I heard that our favorite childhood novel was getting an adaptation.
"Yeah okay, give me a sec, I'll have to buy tickets for it online."
I said so while taking out my phone. After buying the two tickets for the movie titled 'The Wicked Princess', I came across an article about an escaped serial killer but decided to ignore it. Little did I know that the escaped convict would change my life forever.
"And I'm done, the movie starts in about two hours."
"Two hours, but that's too long." She was so excited she could barely contain herself.
"How about we get a snack in the meantime."
"A snack?"
"We can pass by the shopping district to get something to eat, we'll be back before the movie starts."
"I'm not really that hungry but I don't mind having a bite."
We got into a cab and went on our way to the shopping district which was about three kilometers away, it shouldn't take too long. Upon arrival, Rena rushed to a food stand and bought herself candy bars and cotton candy. Then she turned towards me with a smile.
"Big brother, what should I buy for you."
"How about chocolate-flavored ice cream and a dark chocolate bar."
"Ewe you love that bitter chocolate of yours, here you go."
"What you have a problem with that?" I muttered while staring at her with a menacing look.
"I'm sowry, pwease forgive me, brother." As she let out these words she looked like she was about to cry and wouldn't stop glaring at me with puppy eyes.
"Honestly, what am I gonna do with you? It's okay I'm not mad at you." She really is my weakness, one look at her puppy eyes and I immediately felt like she's the most important thing in this world.
"Brother can we go to the arcade; you always beat me but I'll win this time around."
"I'll go easy on you this time."
I should hold back this time, The last time we played she wouldn't stop crying after losing to me in fifteen matches.
As we were walking on the street to the arcade which was a short distance away I saw a suspicious-looking man walking in the opposite direction and his face looked familiar but I could not remember where I had seen him.
"I'll choose which games we are gonna be playing okay."
She was really excited, looks like coming to the shopping district somehow served as a distraction for her.
When the man passed us I suddenly felt a chill run down my spine. It all came back to me, that man was on the article I came across about twenty minutes ago. I tried to remain calm for Rena's sake.
"Rena, try to walk faster," I whispered as I grabbed her left hand.
"But why?" She protested with a puzzled look on her face, "Isn't the arcade a few blocks from here?"
Before I could reply, from behind us the man pulled out a silenced pistol and shot me. He had realized that I knew his identity and decided to silence me, what a menace he is for pulling the trigger without any hesitation.
'I can't breathe, am I gonna die? If I die now what'll happen to my little sister.' Such thoughts filled my mind as I was collapsing.
I was not scared of dying but of leaving my sister alone. If I were to die here she would be completely alone and that would be too much for her to handle after losing our parents.
"Brother no." Rena sobbed as tears were about to run down her cheeks and was about to scream.
"..."
When she was about to open her mouth she collapsed to the ground.
"Reh... Renna."
I tried calling out to her but with my damaged left lung breathing alone was a huge task. I tried my best and crawled over to her but I could not believe my eyes.
"No no no."
I choked when I saw the blood that was coming out of the back of her head, she was shot. I could not stop tears from coming out and I broke down and cried.
I looked around hoping for someone to help but there was a commotion, everyone was running for their lives and the man had blended in with the crowd and disappeared.
"Help!" I mumbled trying to yell as hard as I could but it was impossible.
'Isn't anyone gonna help, Isn't there anything I can do to save my sister.'
Up until now my sister and I had been living a carefree life, although our parents died about ten years ago we did not struggle with anything. Our Aunt and uncle took us in and they cared and loved us as If we were their own. They were both working at the Lesis Health University as lecturers, so our lives were planned out but that was just a dream to be cut short.
"Som one... please call..." I gasped.
With the last of my strength I tried to yell for help but all was in vain as death was slowly closing in on me as well. My vision blurred and I could no longer feel anything when suddenly...
"Brother, let's hurry the movie is about to start." Rena declared with a wry smile.
"Slow down, we can still make it in time." I replied.
'Was I dreaming?" I wondered, 'Does this mean everything I saw was just my imagination?'
The scenery had changed and somehow my sister was okay and it looked like everything was just a part of my imagination. After a few minutes of walking, we were back home.
"What what's going on?" I stammered.
I was confused by the change of scenery; we were suddenly back to our hometown which was forty kilometers away from the city. I realized that what had just happened was a sudden change of scenery similar to that of a dream, and I stopped.
"Brother, why did you stop? We have to keep going." She said.
"Rena, where are we going?" I snapped.
"We have to hurry; you'll see when we get there." She answered with a somewhat eerie smile.
"Who are you and where is my sister?"
My sister cries easily whenever she is scolded so I knew immediately that the person in front of me was an impostor.
'Well that was fast, My imitation of your sister was poor but I wasn't expecting you to catch me so quickly.'
'What is this? You can...'
'Talk directly to your heart and mind? Yes, I can.'
After saying this, her form changed from that of my sister to that of a black shadow. The moment this happened my body felt heavy and fell to the ground. It was as if my whole being was instinctively afraid of the being in front of me.
"Guaah! What happeeeninng." I groaned as I could not lift a finger.
"It's only natural that your body would react that way" " she muttered, "None can withstand my true form, not even the dead."
"Where is my sister?"
"She's right there."
When I looked to the right I could see my sister's lifeless body covered in blood.
"No this can't be real she can't be dead," I complained. "If only I hadn't told my sister to hurry she would still be alive," I said with tears in my eyes that looked like they would flow until my body lost all of its moisture.
'If only I hadn't panicked when I saw that man, she'd still be okay.'
'What if I told you that there was a way to bring her back to life?' The Shadow exclaimed.
'No please don't give me hope, bringing the dead back to life is impossible.'
'What if I said there was a method you could use to revive her.'
'If that method existed, my parents would still be alive today.'
'Your sister was killed in cold blood.'
"Please stop talking in my head!" I protested but all was in vain.
"She was not supposed to die," The shadow declared with a cold voice,
"They robbed your sister of her life."
As the shadowy figure muttered these words, my mind became flooded with overlapping images of the moment she died. The images kept playing in my mind dozens of times, no more than that probably more than a million times. My mind was slowly breaking with every replay, then I started seeing images of the moment my parents died. These were scenes that were not a part of my memories but they were the memories of my parents. As my mind broke completely I screamed like a dying animal. Then the shadow spoke one last time before disappearing.
"Use the souls of the residents in the city of Lesis to revive your sister."
I had lost all sympathy, when these words entered my ears I strengthened my resolve. When I opened my eyes the scenery had changed back to that of the city and my body was healed and I realized that my hair had changed from black to silver.
"O world, let this city be what serves as nourishment for my sister's resurrection."
After muttering these words, a giant magic circle appeared in the sky and it covered the entire city. Millions of souls were reaped out of all living creatures under the magic circle and were all drawn towards Rena's body and before they could fuse with her, my body along with all of the souls vanished from the world. I was somehow hurled to the edge of the universe.
In the empty space filled with endless darkness, Kyte found Himself drifting aimlessly as his body was slowly shutting down due to the treacherous temperatures of the vacuum of space. There was no atmosphere for him to breathe but somehow that did not bother him.
His mind was in turmoil, filled with confusion and a lot of unanswered questions.
'My plan to revive my sister did not succeed. Does this mean I have lost her forever?'
Under the circumstances he was in, any average person would have already lost their sanity but Kyte endured.
'What am I going to do?'
He lamented the death of his sister and his inability to revive her.
'That Shadow, who was it? What was it about its true form? I did not get a chance to ask for its name. My body is freezing and judging from this darkness and the countless lights around me, it's safe to say I'm in space. I can't breathe but I'm not suffocating. Could I be experiencing death for a second time?'
He kept thinking to himself as his body was shutting down. Perhaps his life was nearing its end.
'It's so quiet. I can't feel anything, looks like my eyes are no longer working. Ah... So this is how I die? All alone in this cold and empty space filled with darkness. How did I get here anyway?'
His life signs had ceased and at this moment, the human known as Kyte Tokito had reached the end of his life.
'How long will it be now before my soul is taken to the afterlife? Does it even exist? Will I be reunited with my sister if I end up there?'
In Kyte's world, there was a belief that the souls of the dead would be taken by supernatural entities to a different world called the afterlife. No one knew if this belief held any truth but...
'Rena must be waiting for me; I must not keep her waiting.'
Kyte tried to rely on the little shimmer of hope that he would see his sister again.
'This warmth, what a beautiful place.'
Kyte opened his eyes and what he saw was a beautiful place filled with brilliant colors similar to those of the northern lights.
'Is this the afterlife? So it does exist.'
He muttered in amazement. In his mind, the ephemeral place he was now in was the afterlife; but little did he know that such a place did not exist. In his world, a person's soul would disappear moments after a person's death.
After his body had stopped functioning due to being frozen solid, he passed through the gap that separated the universe from its parallel counterpart. His body broke apart and turned into light particles the moment it came into contact with the barrier that was at the edge of the universe.
The souls and his body were absorbed into the barrier. His soul passed through and due to being exposed to large amounts of a dense energy called ORO essence, a new body began to form around his soul.
He looked around and noticed that there were no living beings around, just an empty space.
'There's no one here. I have to look for Rena, where should I...'
As he kept drifting in the empty space wondering about the whereabouts of his sister, his mind became blank as it was filled with nothing but fear for his life. His body began to tremble as he could not move a muscle.
'What's going on? I have to get away from here, but how do I do that? What am I even running from?'
It was somehow similar to the moment that shadow appeared.
'Wait, this feeling. Could it be the shadow? No, the shadow was somehow suppressing its presence. From that shadow my body wasn't just afraid, it felt like I was dominated. Could this be a similar entity?'
He felt like prey under the gaze of an apex predator. His instincts were screaming at him to flee but his body wouldn't budge due to being petrified with fear. In the next moment, he felt an ominous presence closing in on him. No matter how hard he tried to escape, his body wouldn't let him.
His body was infiltrated by the mysterious entity.
'What's this, get out of my body...Ahhhhhh'
'...'
His entire body was filled with unbearable pain as he was slowly losing consciousness.
'Ahhhhhhhhhhh! What are you? What d-do you want from me?'
Kyte shuddered as he tried his best to fend off the invader.
'Do not resist, this will be over soon.'
The entity spoke with a calm yet menacing voice.
If Kyte were to describe what he had been going through since the morning of Aurora 3rd, he would definitely call it a horror. He was shot and shortly after that his sister died and shortly after that he met an entity that would be best described as the embodiment of fear itself. He left behind a city of corpses in a failed attempt to resurrect his sister. He froze to death in space and now in a space he thought was the afterlife, a mysterious being was trying to take over his body.
'Why is all this happening to me? Could this be my punishment for all those innocent lives I ended?'
The day of the year that he hated the most had taken away everything from him and now he was about to be consumed by an opportunistic parasite.
'Do not resist, this will be over soon.'
'Be quiet.'
Kyte declared quietly.
'Do not resist, this will be over soon.'
The entity repeated those words over and over again.
'Be quieeeeeet!'
Kyte's fear had turned into anger. He was no longer afraid. His heart was filled with rage. He had lost everything but was unwilling to let himself be taken over.
'Your efforts are meaningless. Accept your impending fate.'
'Be gone!'
With those words, Kyte regained full control of his body. Before he could expel the mysterious entity from his body it fused itself with his soul. He tried with all of his might and succeeded in suppressing it.
'Another shadowy figure huh, where do they even come from?'
Kyte thought to himself before losing consciousness due to fatigue.
After losing consciousness, Kyte kept drifting in the empty space for hours before vanishing into thin air.
At a mansion in the Aestier kingdom, two sibling maids by the names: Lilian and Elaine were having a conversation about the mysterious boy that was brought over by their lady.
"Hey Lillian, have you ever seen a human with this hair color before?"
"I don't think I have. Humans have different hair colors, but I've never seen one with silver hair. Perhaps he is not from around."
Lilian declared in a robotic tone with no sign of emotion on her face.
"You think so? That would only mean he is not from this world."
"I wouldn't go that far. Although extinct, high-ranking vampires had silver hair as well. Some of them had differently colored eyes."
They were both standing a few meters away from the bed the boy was sleeping on. He was in a large bedroom filled with luxurious furniture. It was apparent that he was an important individual to the lady of the mansion.
"Wait, are you saying he could be a vampire?"
"I'm not certain of that yet, but we can get answers if we wake him up."
Lilian muttered as she was slowly walking towards the boy's bed.
"Lili wait! What if he bites you?"
"Then we'll know he's a vampire."
"What's with that way of thinking? Why do you always throw yourself in danger?"
"…"
"Don't ignore me!"
Elaine snarled at Lillian who was unconcerned at what she was saying.
"Oh, you're awake. Are you a vampire?"
Upon reaching the boy's bed, Lillian realized that he had woken up.
"A what?"
He answered with a confused expression on his face.
"Silver hair and heterochromatic eyes, those were the traits of rare high-ranking vampires. I'll ask again, are you a vampire?"
Lillian muttered with no expression on her face while staring at the boy.
"Lillian, don't you think it would be better to wait for the return of our lady?"
"Um, what's a vampire?"
"You're kidding, right?"
"You don't know what a vampire is?"
Both maids were shocked by his question. It was only natural that they would react that way since vampires were known all over the world.
"No, I don't. Who are you two and where am I?"
"Oh please pardon my rudeness. My name is Lillian and this is my twin sister Elaine, we are both maids in this mansion. You were found unconscious outside the kingdom by our lady and she brought you over to her home. Is there anything else you would like to ask?"
"No that's all."
"Hey, what's your name?"
Elaine interjected immediately after seeing an opening on the exchange between Lillian and the boy.
"My name?"
The boy stammered as he looked like he was trying to remember something.
"Yes, you have a name right?"
"I don't know."
After hearing what he had just said, the room was silent for a few seconds.
"Hey, Lili."
"Yes, what is it?"
"This boy is weird. How can he not remember his name? Also, he has differently colored eyes. Doesn't this mean he is a vampire?"
Elaine murmured with a concerned look on her face.
"His appearance is definitely that of a high vampire but he does not have fangs. If he is not a vampire, then it's safe to assume he is not of this world."
"You don't mean…"
"Yes, he's most likely from the demon realm. I can sense dark magic pouring out of him."
The sisters had concluded that the boy in front of them was a demon from the demon realm. It was well known that the demons from the demon realm and those from this world differed greatly. Those from the demon realm are aggressive and those from this world were not very different from ordinary humans.
"If that's the case then shouldn't he be locked up?"
"That would definitely be the safest but let's have faith in Lady Lotus. We shouldn't make rash decisions without her consent. And besides, he has not shown himself to be a threat yet."
"He's clearly not a threat, he looks like a lost child than a scary demon."
"Um, am I going to be locked up?"
The boy mumbled with agitation.
"No, you don't have to worry, you're safe here."
Elaine exclaimed with a gentle smile.
"Do you remember what happened before you lost consciousness?"
"No, I don't remember anything."
"Wait, you don't remember anything at all?"
"Yes."
"You have lost your memories, something may have happened before you lost consciousness. You probably received a blow to the head that caused your amnesia, and that is probably the reason why you were found unconscious."
Lillian muttered with an inflectionless voice with no emotion.
"Lilli, why don't you take him on a stroll around the kingdom, that'll help clear his mind a little."
"Why should I be the one to babysit him?"
Lillian complained while tilting her head.
"Well, one of us has to do it."
"Then you do it."
"What? No, I have things to do."
Elaine protested. She turned around with her back facing the boy and her sister's direction.
"Besides, you seem to understand him better than I do."
"Are you afraid of him because he might be a demon?"
"Um."
The boy murmured. He was now sitting on his bed. The maids stopped talking for a moment after they both realized that he had no clothing on.
"Kya!"
Elaine screamed as she turned around with her face turning red. Lillian however, was not bothered by his ***** body and she turned her face towards Elaine.
"I am not babysitting him."
"This again? I'll go get him something to wear."
Elaine declared as she approached the door.
After her sister had left the room, Lillian turned around and began walking toward the boy.
"Don't you know showing off your ***** body is inappropriate?"
"I'm *****?"
He replied as he was slowly tilting his head.
"This is precisely the reason why I can't stand children."
Lillian snapped. She grabbed the bed sheets and covered his body with them.
"Don't move, stay like that until Elaine returns with clothes you can wear. I understand that you are like this because you lost your memories."
He remained silent and lowered his head because he felt bad about what had happened. After a moment of silence, he raised his face and looked into Lillian's eyes.
"Um Lillian, what are you?"
"What am I? My race is a rather complicated topic, but since you asked I'll tell you. My sister and I are what is known as semi-demonic spirits. Our race is among the weakest demonic races in the demon realm. Before working for our lady, we were both full spirits with no physical bodies, unlike the creatures of this world."
"By spirits, you mean like ghosts?"
"Yes like ghosts but…"
"Ghosts, did you say ghosts?"
"How long have you been standing there Elaine?"
"Long enough to notice that you have a soft spot for the demon boy."
"Tsk, you're starting to annoy me."
Lillian sneered at Elaine while angrily glaring at her. For the first time in a while, she expressed her emotions. She was upset.
"I promise not to tell anyone okay. Your secret is safe with me."
Elaine whispered with a wry smile on her face. Her words were meant to be a tease to her sister, but little did she know that Lillian was not in her normal state of mind.
"You're gonna pay for this."
Lillian groaned as she opened her eyes widely. Her eyes stared coldly at Elaine, she was the target for her rage.
Her pink hair began to glow; her body then released an intense aura that created strong winds that filled the room.
"Hey, Lilli! Calm down, I meant it as a joke."
Elaine screamed trying to calm her sister down. She realized that Lillian was genuinely upset by what she said. Lillian however, ignored her sister's cries.
A chair flew towards Elaine at high speed but she quickly caught it and placed it on the floor. Numerous objects began flying towards Elaine but she had no problem handling them in a blink of an eye.
When she turned and looked in the boy's direction to see if he was unharmed she saw a thin film of light covering his entire body. She was relieved to know that he was safe.
"Hhh, I did not want to do this but you give me no choice."
Elaine let out a sigh before kicking against the ground. She flew towards her sister and from the palm of her right hand, numerous strands of light were directed at her sister. The strands of light rapped themselves around Lillian's body and immediately after that, her aura vanished.
"Please forgive me sister, but I can't let you endanger the mansion and our lady's guest."
After hearing Elaine's words, Lillian came back to her senses.
"Big sister, please wait!"
Lillian had finally realized what her sister was planning to do, but it was far too late. Elaine touched her chest and immediately after that, Lillian vanished.
"Where did Lillian go?"
The boy muttered with his eyes wide open. He could not believe what had just happened in front of him.
"She's okay, I temporarily sent her away. I guess she did not take my joke well."
"Why was she upset?"
"I said something meant to be a joke but it pissed her off. My sister acts tough but she easily loses her temper when she's upset, so I sent her to a place that will take away her frustrations. She'll be back before you know it. Here, wear these."
Elaine took clothes out of nowhere and handed them to him. The boy couldn't help but be bewildered at what Elaine had done.
"I'll give you a few minutes to put them on. When you're done, come to the lobby so we can have a walk. I want to show you around the kingdom. Are you okay with that?"
"Um, yes."
The boy looked at the clothes that were on his bed, perhaps he did not know how to wear clothes. After about a minute or so he finally managed to wear the clothes properly.
