Paranoia

The Entrapment (Chapter 1)

Fortuitously, I managed to grasp ahold of a job which seemed like pure luxury. I applied for an interview at an office job which had a high salary but minimal effort required which perfectly suited the type of job I wanted. It seemed unreal to me at first, I thought it would be some illegal trade or scam but the moment I stepped into the building, I noticed that it seemed lively, many people peeked over their office barriers and chatted to their neighbour or were standing in miniature groups gossiping. Nervously, I managed to stagger my way to the front desk to see that the receptionist was having a conversation with a gorgeous, blonde woman who seemed hesitant at my sudden appearance. The office lady finally noticed me as I explained that I was the new intern and proceeded to direct me to my new desk, "Also, kid, our coworkers seem to adore spreading silly rumours, don't worry about them if you come across one or two!" she smiled as she continued to give me instructions on where to go, "This young lady here is Lily. She should be available to help lead you," the office lady nodded towards her as she stared at her feet in a very shy manner whilst grasping tightly to her pieces of paper. Glancing up at me, I attempted to smile to make her more comfortable, instead she seemed to distance herself as we started walking towards my new desk. Gradually, it striked me that the distance between us was increasing which consequently meant that I was making a bad impression. Thoughtlessly, I walked side by side which seemed to shock her and increased her speed, "I'm Aaron, I'm really sorry if I bother you in some sort of way, it's my first day here and I was assuming that you didn't like me much due to the fact you sped off instantly and I was wondering if I could do anything to change your aspect of me?" I enquired; however, instead of replying to me she halted and pondered a moment of what I had said. Abruptly, she gazed up at me with a warm smile and softly spoke, "Thankyou, I didn't mean to be rude but I'd rather not get close to anyone anymore... I shouldn't go around spreading rumours but there have been many disappearances, a lot of which have been my friends and I'm scared that if I socialise with anyone then they might disappear too..." her lip trembled as she spoke as she tried strenuously to not form tears. Puzzled, I became curious and I wanted to ask for details as I hadn't heard of any missing people around the town, but it seemed like the wrong time to ask as she was holding back from what seemed like a breakdown, "Hey, I might be new and not know a thing and I can't promise their return but I'm here if you need someone to talk to about it. This may sound odd coming from a complete stranger but it's better to have someone to talk to whenever you need it!" I offered politely. She seemed to fiddle with her thumbs as she beamed with a beautiful smile and continued trotting along gracefully until we came to our destination: my new desk. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a head of hair that followed with earthy, chestnut eyes which peeked over the office barrier, he began to smirk and stood up, "Hey, you new? I'm Carson, I guess your my new neighbour, huh?" he waved enthusiastically, "Don't worry, Lils. I'll take care of him," he smiled as she rushed off blushing as pink as cotton candy. Carefully, I placed my bag down next to my chair and breathed a sigh of relief that I was finally settled in with no problems, I heard his husky, deep voice speak again," Sorry for bothering you but you seem stressed, you anxious about your first day?" he asked, he was a tall, intimidating man who was pretty muscular and I was quite surprised that he was checking up on me, "Yeah, thanks man. I'm scared that I'll mess something up somehow." I groaned whilst tilting my head back against my chair, "After work, wanna go grab some food? It might give you more motivation to work if you have a friend to talk to during the day, mainly because we do such little work we barely have anything to do that it's boring," he laughed. Before I could respond, two girls strutted towards him and began talking to him, he seemed very popular which didn't surprise me one bit due to how friendly he was acting towards me. For a moment, I saw a glance of hatred and annoyance in his eyes but after i blinked, he was smiling again, "Is this your new friend?" one of the girls giggled, "Yeah, why don't you introduce yourselves? He's new so he could use some people to talk to," he turned to me again and winked, "Hey, we are-" one of the girls was cut off from a voice behind me, "Nobody gives a **** of who you are, you two are so loud, go pester the other side of the office!" a female voice growled at them. Furiously, the two girls huffed and strutted off, "Carson, request to get moved desks, you bring too much attention and it's too much hassle!" she hissed again, I rotated my chair in her direction to see that she had curly brunette hair and glistening green eyes, she was fairly slim but contained the aura of a champion pro boxer that nobody dared to even talk to,"And this is our lovely workplace pet, Kyra!" Carson laughed causing her to almost crawl over the barrier and strangle him to death, "Who's this? Don't they think it's a bad idea to put someone here right after what happened to the last two?" she glared at me, "This is Aaron, it was only a coincidence. Don't bother scaring him like you did to the last one," He rolled his eyes. What did I just hear? Last two? Did they get fired? Is there something about this specific spot? "What happened to the people who used to work here?" I asked, glancing over at Carson, he shook his head as if to tell me that I shouldn't be curious, then Kyra begins to describe the story.
