I woke up in my bed and stretched . Watching all the orphans playing in the kitchen made me feel energised . I got ready for the day and wore my clothes. The sun shone brightly through the window, as if today was the last day it would shine. No clouds were covering the sun and a white fog hovered in the sky. It was time for breakfast, but I knew that today was going to be a bad day.
After breakfast kids went to play outside , leaving me all alone in the kitchen. I finished up my breakfast slowly, taking a bite of each pancake one at a time.
“Olive, finish your food fast. Those kids are playing outside. You’re always left out.” MdmAlina said as she washed the dishes, her hands full or soap, moving every millisecond.
“I prefer to enjoy my food slowly but here you are, forcing me to eat faster and play with the kids,” I mumbled, glaring in her direction.
“Pardon?” Mdm Alina spoke, not looking up from the dirty plates and bowls.
“Nothing,” I shrugged. I stood up, looking longingly at my pancakes. “I’m off to play.” I sighed and headed out of the kitchen.
I went to the field, watching the orphans play soccer. “I’m an orphan” I thought. The words repeated in my mind one after another like a broken radio. It was heartbreak to remember how my mom and dad died in the plane crash, and my memories of that day flooded in. It couldn’t be controlled, and I was suffering from every second of the replayed memory. I think about it everyday, every night and every time I see someone With parents. The memory could not be erased. I stared into space, sitting on the fresh, green grass, leaning against a tree.
“Hey,” I heard a voice say. I just ignored it. Nobody ever talks to me, exception for Mdm Alina, of course.
“Can you hear me?” The voice said again. I snapped out of my daydream. It was Jadden, the only boy who wasn’t disgusted by me.
“Oh. Hi,” I responded coldly. “Wanna be friends?” He offered and gave me his hand. I took it and stood up. “Why do you want to be my friend? I’m not that special anyway..” I muttered, not realising how close he was to me. “Because you’re always alone…Mdm Alina told me that. She wants me to be your friend. But it’s not by force. I had a choice. And plus, you’re pretty cool so that’s a bonus,” He smiled. It was the first time anyone had ever said that to me.
“Okay,” I agreed, trying to hide my gleeful smile.
The rest of the days were the best! We played swings, slide and football. Who knew I had a hidden talent in football? But one day, the fun ended. Somebody came to adopt one of the children and bring them home, a family…warmth and love. Jadden looked at me nervously. “I Hope we don’t get separated,” he frowned. The man who came to adopt us didn’t look very nice. His skin looked like a shadow, the rest of his body were the same- except for his eyes. His eyes were bloody red. Everyone was scared of him. He walked around the orphanage, looking for a suitable child. Everyone looked nervous, especially Jadden. That was when the man stopped, at our corner…Jadden and me exchanged glances. He was going to choose one of us. And it was terrible to lose your only friend. The man looked back and forth at me and Jadden. He took my hand and pulled me up. “No,” Jadden whispered, his eyes full of tears. His blue eyes shone, even in the dark, but seeing him cry was the last thing I ever wanted to do. “I’ll miss you,” I whispered back. Jadden shook his head, in disbelief that I was leaving- leaving his life, this orphanage and going to a better place- without him. His tears rolled down his cheeks, though the atmosphere was blue, his tears shone crystal, and the man, heartless, pulled me out of the orphanage without signing the papers.
The next morning, my eyes were swollen due to crying, but there was one thing I wondered as much as why he( the man) chose me: why was I waking up in a hospital bed? Like a sick person? I opened my eyes slowly and looked around. There was a syringe., surgical gloves and a test tube-green in colour. I sat down and walked towards the mirror. My skin was green, full of bumps and black dots. My eyes were red, and I was starting to figure out: he wasn’t here to take care of me- but turn me into a monster. My eyes popped out like crazy, and the veins in my eyes could be seen clearly from about 10 kilometres away. “No,” I muttered. I turned bigger, and I. Was. A. Monster.
Note: in this chapte, I showed the history of the monster, Keowgen, a monster in Devils Playtime: her powers is to make people forget and go to the wrong direction- a place you’re never supposed to be. In the next 8 chapters, I will show the history of more monsters, and in the 10th chapter, the story begins.
“Mom, can I get some money for my game please?” I asked with hopeful eyes.
“Queir, this is the 6th time you’ve been asking for money,” mom frowned and shook her head.
“Please mom,” I begged. “The Fortnite Battle is coming soon, and my friends already invited me. I need the equipments Mom…all of my friends know that we are rich it’ll be embarrassing not to have new weapons…” I cried.
“Fine,” mom sighed and gave me her credit card. “Yay! Thanks mom!” I smiled and rushed of to my room.
My room was about the size of a normal bungalow’s living room, but It’s good anyway. It’s nice being the top 3 richest family in the world. I rushed to my computer and typed in my password for the game. I could have sworn I just bought nearly ALL the weapons in Fortnight Battle.
“Queir, it’s time for dinner!” Mom yelled. “In a minute mom! I’m in the battle between the giant! “ I yelled back. After that battle (obviously, I won. DUH!) , I ate my dinner and went back to my room to play some Fortnight Battle. My room felt chilly as if I wasn’t the only one inside-even though the lights were on and it wasn’t even that late at night. The voice from the television in the living room boomed loudly and the laughter of my parents were ear-splitting. It was a wonder why I felt so lonely…when there were clearly voices around me, the warmth of my parents and the comfort of my room. I had all of that- why did I feel so…wrong? I walked slowly to my computer, hesitant. I sat down and started playing, which made me feel a lot better.
The moon shone in the dark night, surrounded by bright stars. I continued playing and soon, I was the only one left in the server. I turned the computer off and headed to the living room to check whether my parents are still watching television. They were gone. I looked at the clock. 2 a.m in the morning. They must have gone to sleep already. I smiled slightly and walked to my room to go to bed.
Just before I could tuck the blanket on my bed, a man- under my bed- pulled me down and there I was, gone in the night. My surroundings turned darker, and soon I blacked out.
I woke up in a room, on a hospital bed. Beside me was a syringe and surgical gloves. I sighed. I was late for my online play date with my friends, they would surely be mad at me. I sat down and found myself looking straight in a mirror. My body was black, like a shadow and nothing was to be seen within my body. I was glowing though the darkness, and my eyes were yellow. Bright yellow. There was nothing else but I had to accept the fact that I.Was.A.Monster.
Note: in this chapter you found out the history behind Glith. Glith’s power is to be the light to and guide whoever is there. After guiding them,he makes them realise that he was a trap and he will make them his clones, so there will be many Gliths later on. Thank you for reading!
The cloudy rain droplets raced on my bedroom window, leaving stains that could possibly never be gone. I stared at the garden outside, wondering when the rain would stop. It was hard to see now, since the rain fogs and covers up everything. It was hard to find inspiration in this type of day. I went over to my desk and took a pen. I turned on my computer and was about to start writing when I got a call.
“Hey, Henry. You’re going to submit that manuscript today, right? Have you started? The publisher is expecting it. We’re all excited to read it. You’re the one of the best authors in our company anyway, ain’t I right?” My colleague asked, tone of expectation clear on his soft voice .
I hesitated before answering his question. They would be extremely disappointed in me, but I was working from home, and they couldn’t do anything to me anyway. “Oh- I haven’t started on the manuscript yet…” I stuttered.
“YOU WHAT?!” My colleague shouted at the top of his lungs. “BOSS WANTS THIS DONE BY TODAY! IF YOU DONT GET THE MANUSCRIPT DONE, BOSS WONT LET US GET A PIECE OF REST FOR THIS MONTH!” He yelled. Even though I was calling through a phone, his voice was so ear-splitting that it was as if he was shouting right in my face.
“Look, Peter…can you give me a break? For two days at most. I need my inspiration but with this rainy day, I can’t get any ideas to pop out of my head. Please just give me a break. I promise that I’ll submit the manuscript on Thursday.” I sighed, full of hope that Peter won’t get mad at me for being so selfish. Although I don’t really consider that excuse selfish.
“…Fine. But you owe me one. Wait- you owe US.” Peter nodded. I turned off the call and flopped on my bed. The little human inside my mind who worked everyday to search for ideas was finally lying down on his mini bed after 15 years.
“Playground…” I muttered. An idea was starting to form in my head. “…devil.” I finished. “Devil Playground? No…Devil…devil…Devil Playtime!” I smiled and jumped out of bed to write down my ideas in my notepad.
When I was done, I thought about how the devil would look like..should be something scary and terrifying. I wrote down that he should look like a shadow- all black but red eyes. His figure in mind did seem quite promisingly scary to me. A few seconds after writing down his features, a man- with the same figure, features, eye colour just drifted out from my notebook, and I was pretty sure I blacked out when my surroundings became dark.
I woke up in what seemed to look like a hospital. The walls were old and falling apart and even the bed I was lying down on felt like wood. I sat down and observed the room. The lights flickered in the darkness of the room and there was a creaking sound coming from the bed everytime i moved a muscle.
“Where am I?” I wondered aloud. The room had an eerie feeling and spiderwebs hung on every corner of the ceiling. I sat down and found myself looking directly in a mirror. “Hmm,” I muttered. I looked exactly the same like how I looked like before, but it’s just that my teeth were sharper. Like vampire teeth :)!
I stepped out of the room and looked around. Outside the room was what seemed to look like a playground, full of colour and fun. It was the exact opposite of the room that I was in earlier.
“Eat,” a voice boomed in my head. “Eat,” I repeated. I saw a girl walking towards me, looking around. “Eat,” I said again. “Eat,” I took a step forward to the girl. The girl waved at me, sensing that I looked quite friendly. “Eat,” The voice boomed again, and I started to drool.
“Mister,” The girl said in such a cute voice as she tugged my shirt. I looked down and licked my lips. Before she could say anything else, I bit her.
The girl screamed in horror and started wailing and crying, going through an irresistible pain. But for me, I was enjoying every bite of it. And she was just my snack.
