!Iris trudges home with a blank expression and dark bags beneath her eyes. She knows she’s in for a long night as soon as she reaches her doorstep. Her father greets her, demanding, “Show me your report card.” She hands it over, her voice barely audible as she apologizes for the B in science. But her father doesn’t accept her apology. Instead, he drags her across the living room, beating her mercilessly with a baseball bat until she’s on the brink of unconsciousness. Fortunately, her brother Cameron arrives just in time to intervene and ask why their father is attacking her. Iris breathes a sigh of relief.
Her father stops and her mother storms out of the kitchen, yelling that dinner is ready. Everyone sits down except for her father, who refuses to join them. Her mother becomes furious, but Iris knows better than to try to intervene. Instead, she takes her food and heads to her basement bedroom to cry.
Later, Cameron visits her in the basement, giving her a small book and two thousand dollars. He promises that as soon as he gets a job that can support both of them, he’ll take her away from their abusive home.
Iris is 19 years old, yet she never gets to act her age and enjoy her life. She focuses solely on studying, and as a result, she often wakes up with a dead expression and dark circles beneath her eyes. But today is different. She feels a spark of self-confidence that she can’t quite identify and wonders what it could be. When she goes outside, she finds a piece of bread in the garbage and decides to eat it since she’s not allowed to touch the food in the fridge.
At school, she sits down next to a boy who carelessly snips off some of her gray and purple hair while she’s distracted. When she realizes what’s happening, she runs away crying, eventually tripping over a rock and gaining bruises on her face and arms. She thinks of Ale her cousin a jerk who always seems to have a better life than she does.
Feeling hopeless, Iris decides to jump off the Murasaki bridge to find a better place. But as she lowers her head and walks, she notices a crumpled advertising paper at her feet. Something about it catches her attention, but she can’t figure out what it is. she wants to know ..she looks at the crumbled advertising paper and picks it up..she wonders what am I going to find in this ..and she goes to the bridge without a second thought she wants to jump but she just doesn't have any courage some thing inside her still wants to live.. maybe I was her brothers words that is giving her will power to resist the feelings of pain and to try to look into a good perspective on life..she steps back and she walks back home carrying the crumbled paper
Iris looked at the paper announcing a new bookshop opening a few blocks away and felt a rush of excitement. "Yes, a new bookshop with new novels!" She eagerly walked into the bookshop and saw an array of her favorite novels. However, one book caught her eye - "The Dawn of Faith." "Wow, this looks good. I'm going to buy this," she thought. She made the purchase and headed home, excited to dive into her new read.
As she walked into her house, she was surprised to find her mother with her uncle. Her mind was racing with questions. Did her father know about this? Was she even his daughter? Despite her father's disdain for her, she never stopped loving him and looked up to him. She yelled at her mother, "How could you do that to dad? I can't believe dad gave you everything." It seemed that every day she discovered something that would leave a lasting physical or emotional scar. Today was no different. Her mother screamed, "What are you doing here, you…," yelling a string of explicit words before telling Iris to go to the basement (her room). She sighed and made her way to the basement.
She opened the novel and saw the main character, Aliso, along with side characters Liu and Nyx. "Aliso is a warm-hearted person with dark secrets. He lives a luxurious, amazing life, but he has a heart condition that is slowly killing him," she read, her heart sinking. She wasn't sad for Aliso since he had love and happiness, even though he didn't have handsome looks. She continued reading and learned that Nyx was the queen of sympathy whose heart beat for love and kindness but carried a darker side as well. However, it was Liu who she despised. He was dark, heartless, and filled with hatred, but he had everything he could ever want - luxury, happiness, and more. "I hate him. He doesn't deserve it all. Aliso does," she muttered, furious.
As Iris read on, she learned that Aliso had a dark secret that no one knew, just like his older sister. She wondered what it could be when her father suddenly screamed, "IRIS, COME DOWNSTAIRS NOW!" She rushed down to see her mother on the couch, bleeding from the head, and claiming that Iris hit her before leaving. Iris protested, "I didn't," but her father didn't hear a word and brutally beat her, breaking her arm, and causing her immense pain and tears. Her brother ran to her aid and took her to the hospital.
On their way back, they stopped at the same bookshop, and Iris found a different book, a special edition of "The Dawn of Faith." Her brother bought it for her, and she eagerly went to her room to read it. However, instead of the character bios, there were half-***** pictures of Liu, which infuriated her, and she threw the book in a little closet in her room. She went to bed with a dissatisfied face.
