Eternity Through Sacrifice

Chapter 1

It was a rather normal day for me. I went to school, then back home, gamed for awhile, and finally I went to the game store. Little did I know, the last sound I would hear would be the loud blaring of car horns.

Do you want to live?

[YES] or [NO]

A voiced boomed, resounding in the closed space that was the girl's conscience.

I don't know.

Do you want to live?

[YES] or [NO]

I suppose.

Confirmation: The user wants to live.

[True] or [False]

True.

Answer Registered. Initiating reincarnation process...

"No, no, no...! How could this be... Your child!! It neither moves, nor does it cry..." A small panicked voice cried. The repeated slaps on the child's face quickly became uncomfortable and painful. A weird, short sort of wail escaped the child. The woman sighed, relieved that the child was alive.

"Cordelia, the child lives." The woman whispered calmly as the bathed the child. Evelyn Frinton was acting as a wet nurse for her sister, the former Archduchess of Argent, who was now lying in bed exhausted.

"Thank you, Evelyn." The former Archduchess murmured weakly to her sister as she tried to sit up.

"Cordelia! Please do not strain yourself, what would I do if you were to be injured!" Exclaimed Evelyn.

Suddenly, a calm, but eager voice could be heard from the other side of the door.

"May we come in? Alfred and I are looking forward to meeting the child." The voice had come from the ex-Archduke of Argent, Cedric D'Argent.

"Yes, of course your Grace!" Evelyn replied cheerily as she finished bundling up the child. Cedric opened the door, letting himself in along with his son. With a smile he glanced over to his wife, and to the arms of Evelyn Frinton where his newborn child lay. The young son of Cedric and Cordelia quickly ran up to Evelyn his hands extending up towards his new baby sister.

"Aunt Evelyn, I'd like to see da baby... Please..!" Pouted Alfred, who was still out stretched, reaching for the child in the arms of the Countess of Frinton.  Smiling, Evelyn crouched down allowing the small child to see his sister.

"This is your sister, Alfred, isn't she just darling?" Evelyn's eyes lighting up as a giggle slipped through her mouth. Shaking his head, the boy looked up at his aunt, his eyebrows crossing at the sight of the scrawny little excuse for a human being. Cedric and Cordelia chuckled at at their son's honesty. Looking out the window they saw the beautiful string of lights and lanterns that welcomed their child's birth into the world.

And the scrawny little kid? Yeah, that was me. It was quite confusing actually. Last thing I remembered before blacking out was the sound of traffic as I fell. Then all of a sudden I have a lady, who I don't know, trying to shove her boob into my mouth in attempt to feed me. Well, it's been almost four years since I've been reincarnated and I'd say I'm adapting pretty damn well. Truthfully, though. The fact that I was in a new world, that I could not return to... took about a year to accept. I'm alright now though, my family here is very loving. They helped me to adapt here.

"Mireille, darling would you like to go somewhere before your father and I leave for the expedition?" I look up to the beautiful women who is my mother.

"No mother, I'm alright." I reply. My parents have always regarded me as a quiet child, but my dearest older brother on the other hand?

"Come on!! Let's go!" Alfred asks as he plops down onto the couch next to mother.

"Well it wouldn't hurt for you to pick up a book Alfred." Leaning on the door was my father, smirking a bit as he spoke of Al's simplicity.

"Father!!" My brothers little green eyes lighting up as soon as he spots father. I watch as Al runs up to father, and as father swoops him up into his arms.

"Let's go buy lanterns for the Festival!!" Al smiles as leans down, whispering something in my father's ear. Upon hearing this my father's eyes soften, nodding in agreement.

So here I am, sitting in front of a mirror as my mother combs my hair. I stare into the mirror, a single pair of green eyes looking back at me. Frankly, I'm still not used to having such brightly coloured eyes. Before I was reborn I had dark hair and eyes. Now poof! Reincarnation: Comes with green eyes and silver hair, no refunds! It's something my mother calls the "Signature Argent look."

She thinks that my looks are absolutely stunning, saying I look and act just like my father, rambling on and on as helps me get ready. But I think my mother is much more beautiful. Although brown hair and eyes are just as common in this world as my old world, my mother would still stand out among nobles and commoners alike, with the air of elegance and poise that she carries.

Although I haven't been told much, I do know that my family are ex-nobles. It's a sensitive subject, so I do understand why'd they'd keep it from a child. However, I'll have to know sooner or later. Even Al, my idiotic brother seems to know what happened. These people have been bring me up with love and care for the past couple of years, and I want to share their burden. I want to help them and treasure them as much as I can. Although I was an orphan in my last life, it won't be the same as before. Familial love is comforting, annoying sometimes but I'd rather have it than become an orphan again. I love them, they give me life. But I feel as though the air here is occasionally stiff and sad. It doesn't matter to me that my family lost our noble status but perhaps it mattered to them...

Anyways after a long walk through the snowy town, we ended up with quite a few lanterns for the Festival of Light, which coincidentally fell upon the day of my rebirth as well. After today, my mother and father will be leaving for an expedition, they work as adventurers now. Top-class adventurers. My father is renown as the "Silver Demon", with his quick reaction time and fine swordsmanship. And my mother?

Absolutely frightening. She comes from a family specializing in wind magic, and she's terrifyingly good at manipulating the wind. "Tempest." That's what they call her. But put it simply? My mother can create much more than a simple gale, she could probably destroy swords and shields if she wanted to, maybe even create a tornado and wreck the whole kingdom. Honestly it gives me shivers just thinking about all very rare, but freighting times that mother has lost her temper.

Well, nothing will change the fact that I'm worried for them. Everyone at the guild says that they'll be fine. That they're going with a party of other top-class adventurers. The cream of the crop. That they'd come back safe and sound on the day of the festival. However, I'm afraid that's not what happened. Al and I waited, and waited, and waited. Two weeks had quickly passed by, and soon it was the date of my parents return. The day of my fourth birthday.

They didn't come back that day. It was the festival of lights, all the townsfolk danced in the snow between the strings of lanterns. But I wasn't in a festive spirit at all.

We waited. We waited for another day. And another one after that. Six days passed. Al and I were having dinner at the guild as usual. On our walk there, the townsfolk, who usually greeted us cheerfully with smiles, now avoided us. Not daring to look at us directly. Only taking a peek every now and then.

When we finally arrived at the guild, one of the receptionists broke the news to us.

A single man from the party had come back last night, covered in his own blood. Dying. His final message was of the event in which the party of 20 top-class adventurers were wiped out by a demon. One who serves directly on the demon queen herself. He had a human like appearance. A scaly tail and horns. A Dragonia. In this world of swords and magic, I've read many books about all sorts of things in this world. Originally the Dragonia were a type of Beastmen, it all changed when they submitted to the demon queen about 3000 years ago. Within many Beastmen tribes it's practically taboo to even mention them. And they... Six days ago, they killed my parents.

I watched. I watched as Al broke. His eyes filled with tears, his breathing quickening with each passing moment. I could only watch. I didn't know how to comfort him. How?

I watched. I watched his face contort into utter despair. His smile now writhed in pain, as if a vital part of him was stolen away. And something had been.

I watched. I watched my brother's back as he turned towards the entrance of the guild. I watched my brother break as I stood in the hall of the guild, my face as blank as it always. Just like in my past life.

Chapter 2

"Al..!" I spin on my heel, preparing to follow my brother when one of the guild receptionists stops me, grabbing my shoulders. I look up to her sullen face. She turns me around and hands me two letters.

My parents wills.

I stare down at the letters and back to where Al was standing. He's already long gone. I turn away from the receptionist and without another word, I'm gone. I run as fast as I possibly can with my little legs, the snow crunching beneath my feet.

You would think a kid would go to his secret hide out when he's trying to avoid you, huh? But I already know all of Al's little hang out spots, so of course the best way to avoid me would be to lock himself in his room.

I walk through the house, still covered in snow from outside. The sound of my boots beating against the floor that was echoing through the house stops. A heavy thought weighed me down, chaining me to my spot.

How I am supposed to comfort someone?

I didn't know how. I couldn't move another step. It was such a simple thought yet it evoked such chaos within me. I too found it difficult to understand, why was I the way I was?

I drop my hands the my side and sit myself down on the couch to read the letters first.

I trace my fingers over the delicate writing that splayed out across the envelopes.

Last Will and Testament of Cedric D'Argent

Last Will and Testament of Cordelia D'Argent

Opening up my father's will, I see that the will not quite what it's supposed to be. It's more like a set of instructions than anything than anything. It was quite a few pages long, filled with diagrams and arrows sprawled across the paper. No doubt, these pages contained blueprints of a large mansion, presumably the one that my family lived in before they were exiled. Secrets about the  Argent's that only legitimate heirs were allowed to know.

I scramble towards the envelope with my mother's name on it. Upon opening it I find two wills and a letter.

To my two dearest children,

It seems that your father and I have regrettably passed away. The blueprints in your father's letter must be kept away, only the two of you should know of their existence. I'm afraid that man will come to get you two without a doubt. You must be wary and choose whom you trust. If all goes wrong seek refuge in the House of Ventus, or even in the House of Frinton, they will surely aid you. All that we leave you two are in are wills, however there is more. When we were exiled, we had nothing left. The only things we were able to bring from the Mansion were the Argent insignia, and the Beast Taming Flute. Both are hidden in my jewelry box. Mireille, Alfred, we want you to know that no matter what happens to us, we want you two the live out your days happily.

Love,

Mother

Of course, I understand everything except for who "that man" is. Giving up, I walk up to Alfred's room and slide the letters beneath his door. I guess he was curious because although he tried not to make to much noise, I could hear a slight creak every few steps he took. I'm sitting on the couch contemplating what we should do next when I hear Al's door slam against the wall as he flings it open.

"Mireille...!" I watch my brother as he shuffles out his room in a panic, his eye red rooms tears. "We gotta leave! No... We have to, now!"

He grabs my arm and starts to drag me off somewhere, I can feel his hands shaking I've really never seen him this anxious before.

"Al..." My little four year legs can't seem to keep up with the pace he's walking at. "Al...! Al stop, what's wrong?!"

"I really..." His eye shift up, to my right, and then down again to look at me. "Mother and father. They're, they're dead..." he trails off. "No. No, they can't, they can't be."

Al's voice is brittle, as if it were to break at any moment. I look up at my brother, and choke on the words I spit out.

"Al." He turns to face me, as if he just snapped back to reality. "Mother and father... Are dead. They've died." I say, breaking the truth to him.

Al collapses onto the floor, holding his head in his hands. His tears streaming down his face once again. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry Mireille." Al takes a long deep breaths, just like how my mother once told him to.

"I'm the older one. I should be calm, and figure out what's best for us." He continues. "I can't. I can't. I'm such a useless older brother aren't I?" He chuckles.

"Only sometimes." I say as I pat him on the head. "But usually? You're the best brother I could ask for."

As Al calms down, we both settle in the living room. Taking in a deep breath I ask Al, "Who's 'that man'?" I watch as Al opens his mouth as if he wanted to say something, and then he closed  it again.

"-uncle..."

I could see Al shaking. It wasn't exactly of fear. Rather, it was of hate.

"This person... could you tell me about him?"

"He's the one who threw our family out of nobility. He framed father. And I bet that guy is living off all of father's money... indulging in luxuries."

Al stood up abruptly, walking off. "Sorry Mireille... I can't." My brother closed his door. Fucking hell, magical kingdoms aren't fun in the slightest. A goddamned eight year old has to worry about shit like this.

I too, go to bed that night my worries filling my head, tears streaming down my cheeks.

Chapter 3

The next morning, I awoke. I didn't want to do anything. My body felt sluggish and I had no real motivation for anything. I stayed in bed until the sun was at its peak in the sky. The afternoon had come, and so did another unwanted visitor.

I had heard a knock on the door and I reluctantly went to see who it was. I peaked through the curtains, and what I saw wasn't really unexpected. However it didn't change the fact that I was unprepared for his visit.

The moment I laid my eyes on the man, I could hear my mother telling me about the significance of my eyes and hair.

The signature Argent look. Silver hair, with eyes of emerald. With the traits, a child of the Argent family could inherit the family fortune and take over as the family head. As long as these traits our present, the only other needs would be, strong magic, and proof of lineage. For generations, the head of the family has had silver hair and emerald eyes.

I reminisce the fond memory for a moment before snapping back to reality. Would I be considered a threat to him with this hair of mine? He doesn't know how I look like... I let mana flow throughout my body, just like Al taught me before. Transformation magic, the kid would use it to change into animals and run around town to cause trouble.

I ran to my parents' room to check the mirror. I now had brown hair that matched my brother's. I could hear the light knocking on the door again. I hurry to Al's room, to wake him up.

"Al...! Wake up!"

"What..." He wakes up, looking tired and drained of all his energy. His eyes widen, as soon as he sees me. "Mireille? That you?"

Al sat up confused. "Why-"

"Al, listen. I've had brown hair since the day I was born. My hair is naturally like mother's. Alright? That's the story."

The rapping on the door got louder. Alfred looked me in the eyes, confirming his worries I nodded. That man is here.

Jumping out of bed, Al headed straight for the door. It was at this time that I saw a whole new side to my brother. My brother opened the door.

"Uncle...?!" He gasped, feigning surprise. And then he smiled the most charismatic smile. Call it angelic if you want. "What brings you here...?"

"Alfred, I'm very sorry... But sadly your parents have passed away."

With a single grimace, I realize that Alfred is no longer acting. Even though he continued to spout lies. "Mother, and father..."

I would continue to watch but I had some other things to take care of. As quietly as I could, I crept back into Alfred's room. I had to get the wills and dispose of mother's letter. Of course since I'm only four my parents never taught me anything other than basic magic. But I can definitely burn a few letters with what I have learned.

With a single movement I burn the letter, not even leaving ashes behind.

"Mireille!"

I hear Al call me from the front door. "Coming!" Tch. I still need to get our family's insignia and the beast taming flute.

I walk out to the front door and smile. "Al, who's this?" I ask, cocking my head a little to my right. I glance at the man who is our uncle.

"This our uncle. He's come to bring us to the Argent Estate. Uncle, this is my sister, Mireille." Alfred said bluntly.

"Yes, nice to meet you. My name is Claude D'Argent, I've brought a few of my servants to help you pack. You can just take what you need, or whatever you want to take." With a swift hand motion some servants came flooding in.

They went through all the rooms as if searching for something. "Who allowed mere servants to come into our home and go through out rooms?" Al threatened.

All the servants seemed to stop in their tracks. Wow~ Who knew this little kid could be so frightening when he actually acted like a rich kid. One servant bowed to Alfred.

"By all means young lord, we are simply doing as his grace instructed us. We are helping you and the young lady to pack the essentials needed for the trip to the Argent Estate."

"And why would a lowly servant know what we'd like to bring back to the Argent Estate?" Again. wOw~ Who knew a eight year old could sound so threatening, because at this time. All the servants and began to kneel before Alfred. Deciding to alleviate the situation a little I smile and turn to our beloved uncle and speak.

"I think that Al and I should gather our own things as well." I pout a little bit, I'm you gotta maximize the effects of the stupidly cute look while you can.

"Oh? And why is that?" The man smiled as he crouched down to my level, slightly inconvenienced.

I walked up to him, cupping my hands to his ear. "Well, uncle. The reasoning is quite simple, mother has things in her room that she wishes for no one to see!" I whisper.

Suddenly interested, our dear uncle gripped my shoulders rather tightly. "What could that be?"

"Well I'm not sure if it's appropriate for me to say it..." I whimpered.

"Don't worry. I'm your family, I'm sure you can tell me."

This bastard who's clearly after the Argent insignia and the beast taming flute, simply smiled like he was deceiving a child with some candy.

"Well..." I cupped my hands up to his ear once more, "mother keeps her undergarments in her room, and I believe that it's quite rude to have men going through mother's things!" I take a step back, balancing myself on my heels.

"Besides mother said that a gentleman would never forcefully enter a ladies room without permission!" I exclaim, putting my hands on my hips.

"Ahem." He cleared his throat, with slight signs of blush upon his cheeks. "I suppose you're right, now Mireille, why don't you go get whatever you'd like to bring to the Argent Estate."

With another gesture, all the servants were retreating to the outside of the building. I stare at the bastard. This man better not be having lewd thoughts of my mother. I'll kick you in the fucking balls you piece of shit.

I turn to Al, cuing with my eyes. "Al, let's go."

Al and I return to each of our respective rooms, falsely gathering things that we wanted to bring to the estate. I don't have much to gather. I grab the lantern that I had bought for the Festival of Lights awhile ago. Grimacing as I held it in my hand. Refreshing my mind, I head back out to where the Archduke awaited. I smiled as I showed him the lantern.

"I'd like to take this to the estate, and also another thing." He nodded carefully, observing me as I retreated back into my parents' room. I crawl onto the stool of my mother vanity table, reaching for my mother jewelry box. I open the secret compartment holding the dimensional ring that held the insignia and beast taming flute. Coincidentally it also happen to be my mother's wedding ring.

I quickly took out my necklace, which was also a dimensional storage device, and slipped the ring into my necklace. After reconciling it beneath my clothes again I pick up the jewelry box and head back to wear Alfred and the Archduke were. Once I reach the front door, Al has already gathered whatever he wanted to take. I smile a naively childish smile, while presenting the jewelry box to Claude D'Argent. I've gotten everything I wanted to get!

His lips curved into a slight smirk. "Very well. Let's depart for the estate."
