The Villain's First Love
Chapter 1 - Bookworm
"Butterflies For My Princess".
An average looking book title to the eye of a reader. However, it was its contents that took the world by storm.
Written by a writer known under the pseudonym "Misty Plume", this novel became a world-hit sensation.
It tells the story of a young princess who falls in love fives times with the exact same man.
Although the premise seems complicated, I actually really loved it once I began reading.
The same man continuously disguises himself, inserting himself into her life before disappearing once she got close to the truth.
The heightened emotions are well written by the author, and the issues that the individual characters have are portrayed in a very outstanding way.
At first, I wasn't convinced that a book like this could live up to the hype. However, I soon ate my own words once I began to read it.
I suddenly heard the gasp and I turned my head around to meet the eyes of my shocked maid.
Vanessa Swan
Mina? What are you still doing up?
Mina
My Lady, the sun has already risen!
Now it was my turn to gasp. I got up from my chair and rushed towards the curtains, pulling them back.
Sure enough, the whole world had woken up while I was yet to go to sleep.
My fingers clasped around my book on Alterrian history, a fascinating read that had somehow allowed me to jump forward in time!
I'm joking, of course. It seems to me that I got so absorbed in my literature that I forgot to sleep.
Mina sighed as she began setting out my clothes for the day.
Mina
The Marquis is returning home today. He'll be here by noon.
Mina
Until then, please get some rest, My Lady!
She's right, I need some rest before I see my father. I'd hate for him to think that I'm ill.
I set my book down and rushed towards my bed, curling up in a ball before closing my eyes.
Mina smiled at me before leaving my room, allowing me time to rest.
This reminded me of my past life...
I used to save the pennies of my salary to afford a book every once in a while.
That very night, I'd end up staying awake until the morning reading it until I finished.
By that time, my alarm for work went off, and I forced myself out of bed to head over and work.
All I remember was falling to sleep on the train, a finished copy of "Butterflies For My Princess" slipped into my work bag.
Then, I woke up in the body of Vanessa Swan, a nameless extra in the novel.
It didn't take me long to realize where I was when Alterria was one of the first words someone uttered to me.
The beautiful fairy-tale land of magic and love.
And now, it was my home as well.

Chapter 2 - Precious Daughter
I stifled a yawn while waiting for my father's arrival.
The messenger said that he'd be here at noon, but I knew my father better than anyone.
He'd force everyone to hurry up so that he was back here at the earliest hour.
Mina
My Lady, it's too cold for you to be outside!
Thanks to Mina's worrying, I had been covered in furs from head to toe.
It was the middle of winter in Alterria, and a carpet of snow had enveloped the region with a serene beauty.
It also meant that most people in the estate were suffering from minor ailments, such as colds.
Vanessa Swan
I'll be fine. I heard that cold air does wonders for your complexion.
Mina
Please wait inside. The Marquis will worry if he sees your flushed cheeks!
It doesn't take much to worry my father, that's for sure.
Ever since my mother died at my birth, the Marquis has been extremely protective of me.
He never held the death of his beloved wife against me. Instead, he looked after me even more.
While other men of his age would have remarried almost instantly, the man was so heartbroken that he was unwilling to open his heart up to anyone.
At some point, he even closed his heart off to me.
I've lived two lives. When I woke up in Vanessa's body, I cried.
Not from sadness, but from a strange happiness.
I had a family in this life, and I was going to make sure that they knew that I loved them.
My father eventually melted and began excessively doting on me.
His protective nature sometimes becomes a hindrance, but I can never stay angry at him for long.
Mina
For my sake and the other servants in this estate?
I smiled as I looked towards the road leading up to the estate, noticing the movement at the horizon.
I watched my father ride at the forefront of the convoy, rushing into the courtyard with ten of his personal knights by his side.
Mina
I'll fetch Terence to take care of the horses!
Mina quickly disappeared, and I smiled once I saw my father dismounting from his horse, not looking a day older than 30 despite being in his high 40's.
My lips curled up into a smile as I rushed towards him.
He quickly took hold of my face, pressing his warm gloved hands against my flushed cheeks.
Marquis Swan
Your cheeks are completely flushed. How long have you been waiting outside for me?
Vanessa Swan
Too long. I missed you, Father.
He opened his arms and I slipped right into them, hugging him tightly.
His armor felt cold to the touch, but I didn't care.
The warmth of his love for me overcame the cold, filling me with nothing but happiness.
I stepped back and frowned, looking around him.
Vanessa Swan
You're not injured, are you?
Marquis Swan
No. I honored my promise, didn't I?
Every time he leaves to sort out a problem at our borders, I make him promise to return safely, without any injuries.
If he breaks that promise, he always returns with a bag of strawberry candy for me.
And he always apologizes to me.
Marquis Swan
"I'm sorry, Vessa... I broke our promise."
I stare at him and don't notice any strawberry candies, which makes my body relax with relief.
Vanessa Swan
Yes. Yes, you did.
I have a father who risks his life to give me a better one.
And although it pains me to watch him leave, plunging himself into danger, I rarely have any doubts about him not returning alive.
After all, he is the famous swordsmaster, Marquis Leonidas Swan.
Unbeatable and unparalleled in every way.

Chapter 3 - Dutiful Daughter
I stared over my father's shoulder at the knights part of his retinue.
They were all fiercely loyal to the Swan family, and would lay down their life without hesitation for their duty.
I turned my attention towards him and smiled at the men brightly.
Vanessa Swan
Thank you for bringing my father back home safe.
The knights all chuckled, while one made the effort to answer me.
Charles Jenkall
It should be us who should thank the Marquis. He's the one who slayed the Class-5 Beast with only five strikes-
Marquis Swan
A story for another day.
Marquis Swan
Come on, let's get you out of the cold. Your poor cheeks and ear tips will freeze off.
Vanessa Swan
Says the person who has been travelling on the back of a horse for hours in cold metal armor.
Vanessa Swan
Why don't we both warm up by the fire with some hot tea?
Marquis Swan
Sounds like a plan to me.
Marquis Swan
Charles, tell everyone that they are dismissed for the day.
Father then took my hand and helped me up the stairs leading to the main entrance of the estate.
He left me off by the fire in his office before telling me that he needed to take off his armor and get changed into something more comfortable.
Marquis Swan
I want to enjoy my conversation with you as much as I can.
He disappeared, leaving me alone by the flames.
My fingertips and cheeks slowly returned back to normal thanks to the roaring flames of the fireplace.
I hugged my legs, losing myself in my skirts.
Suddenly, a slight tap on the window broke my focus on the flames.
My eyes turned towards the large French doors leading to the balcony, where a grinning Maxon was standing, his hand pressed against the glass.
I got up and walked towards the door, unlatching it from the inside before opening it up.
I stared at him unimpressed as he grinned brightly.
Maxon Illyss
Greetings. Mind if I come in?
On paper, Maxon is one of my father's attendants. However, I know that Maxon's real role is as my father's assassin.
Vanessa Swan
What are you doing up on the balcony?
Maxon Illyss
If you ask so many questions, you'll only receive so many answers.
Vanessa Swan
That's why you ask questions in the first place.
His attitude never fixed with me.
My father found him one day in a port town. I'm unsure of how they met or how my father ended up hiring him, but I know that him and I were never supposed to meet.
My father made that clear to him, yet here he is.
Vanessa Swan
Do you have an answer for me?
Why is he up on the balcony in the first place?
Maxon Illyss
Well, I wanted to give you a present.
Maxon Illyss
I found some on the way and thought I might as well bring something back for you.
Handing me what seemed to be the Swan Knight's handbook, I looked up at him with a judgmental look on my face.
I opened it and my eyes went wide at what was inside.
Between the pages were pressed dried flowers, all exotic species that only grew in the southern regions of my father's land.
Maxon Illyss
I spent time picking them. The knights even made fun of me for it.
I closed the handbook up and sighed.
Vanessa Swan
Do you want me to bandage up your ego for you?
Maxon Illyss
I'm afraid that's not possible. It's destroyed beyond repair now...
I sighed, rolling my eyes at the cheeky attendant.
Vanessa Swan
Thank you. You didn't have to get me anything.
Maxon Illyss
Consider it a gift and nothing more.
Maxon Illyss
A couple of dried flowers are hardly worth anything.
I find worth in them, not that I'd ever admit it to him.
Vanessa Swan
Thank you for caring for my father.
Maxon sighed, leaning back on the frame of the glass doors.
Maxon Illyss
You always thank me when you want me to leave.
Maxon Illyss
Am I right to assume that?
I didn't confirm nor deny it.
Maxon Illyss
Well, it's been a pleasure, My Lady.
He made a grand gesture of bowing before slowly backing up on the balcony, turning around and jumping off.
I rolled my eyes, not even making a second check to make sure he didn't break anything.
The moment I closed the doors, my father burst in holding two cups of tea and a plate of biscuits on a tray.
Marquis Swan
What's wrong?
I smiled, setting the handbook down on the table.
Vanessa Swan
Nothing for you to worry about.
Vanessa Swan
Are those my favorite?
My father looked up at me sweetly.
Marquis Swan
For you? Always.
