I’m in the car with my parents; Rosie and Trent Blacksworth. As I stare out the window recalling how mom and dad told me that we were moving to Casper, Wyoming from one of many places I moved to Detroit, Michigan. Me, Maya Spring Blacksworth, a 16 year old girl not even close to finishing high school is moving that feels like its for the 800th time. I know, I’m being over dramatic. I am just tired of starting over on wash-rinse-repeat. It’s a never ending cycle. One day my mom comes to my room and says to me, “Maya, darling, we are moving to Casper, Wyoming. That’s the place is your father and I’s home town. It is time to return home. A place we all will be happy.”
I looked bewildered at her before answering, “After I just got comfortable in my NEW home town, we got to pack up and leave, YET AGAIN. You and dad never give me a real reason why we always have to move. I absolutely hate always being the new girl at a new school. It is very awkward! I stand out everywhere I go! I have silver eyes and my hair is so blonde that it makes it look white! Why are we moving? Why can’t we just stay in one spot for once? Just why? You guys always say “it’s for my safety.” Safety? From what?! I’m so tired of being in the dark all the time! I’m not some little kid anymore! I am 16 years old. A TEENAGER! Quit the bullshit and tell me!”
Mom was so stunned that she didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know that dad was at my bedroom door when he stated to mom, “I think it is time to tell Maya everything. She is right. She isn’t a kid anymore. It is coming to a point where you and I can’t protect her anymore by ourselves. She deserves the truth and what future is held for her, Rosie.”
Mom sighed and agreed, “You’re right. Let’s go, Maya. Go to the living room and wait for a second so your father and I can grab stuff for you to see.”
I sighed and for once I didn’t say anything and just followed orders. I walked down the stairs into the living room an sat on the sofa impatiently waiting for the parents. Luckily I didn’t have to wait for long. They came in the room with ancient looking scrolls. I was very confused but just waited. Mom finally looked at me and said, “Maya, you are a very special girl with a gift. You, my dear, only come ONCE in a life time. The last time this person was like you was around in the ancient times. I don’t understand why it has to be you. But it is fate. We cannot escape fate.” She looks at dad. He nodded to mom. Mom comes to me and carefully hands me the scroll and tells me to open the scroll very carefully. I carefully opened the scroll and I gasped. This is in ancient tongue. But…..I can understand it. Every single word is not English. But I can understand it. Before I realized I was speaking in ancient Gaelic. On the scroll it says, “In the present there will be a young girl that will take in place of me, of Bethany Sky Worthstock, a very rare white wolf. The moon goddess, herself, has made me this way when I was a baby. The girl will be able to do many things. She will have to fight to survive. For the evil will return and be much more powerful. She will have trails she has to go through to see if she is the one. She will have a mate. A mate so worthy of being her mate. The girl will be the only to understand my native tongue. She must be successful or we will all fall.”
My parents were quite stunned when they saw my eyes glowing and my voice in a trans. I dropped the scroll and before I was able to fall, dad caught me. He started to shake me. “Maya. Maya. Are you with us? Can you hear us.” I blinked my eyes and realized I was on the ground in my father’s arms. I carefully sat up as he lets me. Mom knelt beside me and hugs me. Tears in her eyes, she stated, “Maya, the scroll has chosen you. You have a mark on your inner thigh that looks like a moon. You mustn’t let anyone see it. You have become a very important person. In history, in fact. You are going to have allies. And you will have enemies. Be smart. Be proud of who you will become.”
I clinger to my mom and just hold on to her. As she holds on to me. She sits by me and pets my hair and hums to me. Knowing that’s what I needed. I started to fall asleep as they laid me down on the couch and before I knew it, I was fast asleep.
And here we are now, in a car with my parents, heading to the new destination. I sighed. Mom turns around from her seat and smile, “You are finally awake. How are you feeling.”
I shrugged, “I am okay. Just over whelmed.”
Mom nods in agreement, “It is to be expected. Just rest for awhile longer.”
I leaned my head against the window and just looked out. Just lost in thought with nothing but bullshit. I am so very tired. I felt something in me when I opened the scroll. I had so many questions. I want so many answers. But I know that answers will come in time. Won’t come all at once. I felt that I wasn’t me, but a whole new person. I sound crazy and that’s coming from me. Mom said I should rest. Do I want rest? No I don’t. What I really want is for my questions to be answered. A mate? What the hell is a mate? A wolf? I thought transforming into wolves is only legend and not real life. I need to be smacked, pinched, or something to get me out of this funk. I grabbed a piece of my skin of my arm and pinched myself hard. I winced. Yup. This is real. This is no bullshit. Great. What am I going to do? The whole thing sounds like its fake. I’ve been told that I got to keep this a secret and not to tell a soul. Who do I tell? I am a loner. I don’t have a soul to talk to besides my parents. This place is gonna be a whole new world. My gut tells me to be wary and not to trust. But who is there to be trusted? So many things all at once is overbearing. I don’t have social media. I don’t have a phone. I don’t have anything expect for my books. My parents are very old fashioned. So I guess that makes me a bit old fashioned as well. I am honestly surprised that I didn’t get reprimanded for my language. I’ve been taught to have a respectful tone, no matter of the situation. To respect others. Of course, within reason. My life is one crazy rollercoaster. A rollercoaster with many turns, ups, and downs. I just hope I’ll be a lot survive it.
I woke to mom shaking me awake telling me that we are here. I groaned as I stretched. Then I sighed and started to grab my stuff but dad said to leave it and that someone will grab it for me. So I just closed the door and looked at my surroundings. It was very beautiful here. Very green with a lot of trees. The land has been kept up. The sky is very blue, no bad storm in sight. But then, I saw a really handsome guy, who’s maybe a couple of years older than me. He’s super tall with broad shoulders. His hair is very black down to his shoulders. My face turned at least 50 shades of red when our eyes met. I looked away and saw that mom was coming towards me.
I whispered to mom, “Who’s that guy?”
Mom was confused and looked around until she caught on what I was asking. She smiled and said, “That guy is Trevor Standstill.”
I covered my mouth with my hand to surpress my laughter, “Standstill? What kind of name is that? I mean I like the first name Trevor. But his last name? It is pretty funny!”
Mom just shook her head at me and told me to follow her. When I realized she is guiding me across the short distance and the guy, Trevor, smiled at mom and said, “Hello, Rosie. How are you doing today? I see that you and Trent has finally made it home.”
Mom beams at him, “I am doing good. Yes, we finally wanted to go back home. With our daughter Maya.”
Trevor was confused until his gaze turned and saw me standing beside mom. He walked over to me and said, “You must be Maya. You are very unique and very beautiful. You have unusual eyes and hair.”
I looked down at me feet, blushing, before I shyly said, “Thank you.”
He smiled warmly at me. As if I am the only girl in the room. He took my hand and raised it to his lips and kissed the back of my hand. He is literally like a giant! He is at least 6’6. And here I am at 5’2, having to raise my head to actually see him. He still hasn’t let go of my hand. And he doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to release my hand either. I felt a shook going through my hand, throughout my body. I gasped. I bet he felt it too. But its hard to tell, but I saw a slight change in his expression. His gaze went softer and he smiled, just a little smile. You could of missed it if you weren’t paying attention. He had a handsome smile. He finally let go of my hand, and suddenly, I missed his warmth. He was still staring at me. He asked, “Would you like a tour?”
I blushed and stated, “Sure. I would like that a lot.”
But then I realized my mom was still beside me. When I turned to ask her if it was okay. She was beaming at me and said that it was okay. That she’ll come find me later. With that she turned around and walked away to find my father. Trent took my hand and started to guide me through the small town. He explained the history behind it. Then out of the blue he asked me, “How old are you, Maya? You look very young.”
I huffed, “I am 16. I will be 17 in a couple of months.”
He smiled to himself.
I asked him, “What about you? How old are you?”
He said, “I am 18.”
I must looked surprised because he laughed softly. I blushed yet again. But then, out of nowhere, I felt like a total different person. I started to say something in the ancient tongue, “I must be prepared for what’s coming. The moon goddess herself, has gifted me. I shall defeat the dark one.”
Just like that I snapped out of it. I staggered but Trevor caught me and hold me to his chest. He looked down at me in concern and asked, “Are you okay? What was that?”
I didn’t meet his eye and nervously said, “It doesn’t matter. I don’t want to talk about it right now.”
He gave me a look of doubt but didn’t press anymore. I have a feeling that he won’t let it slide by easily. I feel like a total freak. With some mysterious power that I don’t know anything about. But I got this feeling that Trevor knows. I feel like I am the only one in the dark. I tell myself to have patience is virtue. Everything will come in time. They just don’t want to overwhelm me. I looked around it is just the two of us. Which I am very grateful for.
I hang out with Trevor for a little while longer. He dropped the subject when I didn't want to talk about what happened. But I know he wants to know. How can I tell him what's going on when I don't understand it myself. To me, it's a no brainer. It hurts my head just thinking about it. There was a sharp pain in my head that I stopped all of the sudden. I held my head in my hands. I fell to my knees gasping in pain. Trevor was kneeling beside, I'm sure he's asking what's wrong. But I couldn't hear him. I couldn't understand him. Trevor shouted for my parents. Within minutes they came running. I felt smoothing hands on my face. I barely hear anything. Before I know it, I blacked out.
Trevor picked her up carefully. He thought to himself, "Damn, she's light as a feather." Rosie looked at Trevor nervously before saying, "The prophecy is coming sooner than we thought."
He looked at her confused before asking, "What prophecy?"
Rosie looked at her husband, he nodded at her to continue. She swallowed hard before explaining, "Maya has been chosen by the moon goddess. She's the one to save us all. She is coming to her prophecy sooner than what Trent and I thought. We got to watch her more closely than before. It seems that Maya trusts you, Trevor. Don't mess it up. This child has been through alot. Because of the prophecy, she has been very lonely. No real friends. No real home to call home because we were constantly moving." Rosie looked at her daughter in Trevor's arms. Running her hand through Maya's hair, as she slept before she continued, "Maya has unique traits. Her hair is so blonde that it's white. Her eyes are silver. She is recantation of her ancestor. She looks alot like her. No, she is her twin. But from different generations. Trevor, please protect our daughter. Trent and I couldn't conceive anymore children after Maya. She is very special to us. Guard her with your life."
Trevor looked at Maya, who's in his arms. They were at the spare house where Rosie, Trent, and Maya is residing at the moment. He gently laid her on her bed and pulled off her shoes. He put the blanket up around her. He kissed her forehead. Then he looked straight at Rosie, "Maya is my mate. I felt a connection to her almost immediately. I swear I'll protect Maya. She's not gonna leave my side. Everything makes since. Puzzle pieces are coming together. I knew from the moment I saw her, she's special. She's very pretty. If you and Trent let's me, I would like to stay with her. I know we just met. But I feel as if I've known her for a lifetime."
Both Rosie and Trent were speechless before having a warm smile on their faces. They both looked at each other then back at Trevor. Both of them nodded their heads in agreement. They both left the room, leaving Trevor watching over Maya as she slept so peaceful, yet has a troubled look on her face. Trevor sat in the chair that's beside her bed. Took her hand in his before whispering, "I will protect you no matter what. I'll love and cherish you. I will stay by your side until the end of time. Even then I'll be with you."
