If there is one way to bring a smile to someone’s face, it is laughter. Funny jokes, comical stunts, sarcasm- Every person is different when it comes to what makes them laugh. Some find dry humor comical. Others think sarcasm or joke-filled ranting are the best. ‘Comedy’ is such a broad term, broad enough to allow everyone to find something they find comical. In fact, ‘comedy’ includes a specific type of drama, one where the protagonist is joyful and happy endings are expected. Comedy is like a drug; it allows you to escape reality. When we say the word ‘comedy’ in the present, we are generally referring to a type of performance which provides humor. Writers at the time such as Aristophanes and Menander wrote comedy similarly to how we do today, mocking politicians, fellow writers, and Greek philosophers (Mark Cartwright). The word ‘comedy’ is derived from Middle English, from Medieval Latin comoedia, from Latin, ‘drama with a happy ending’ (Merriam-Webster). This joyful type of performance may be why we commonly use the word ‘comedy’ to talk about jokes, humor, and hilarious performers. Comedy is meant to bring us joy and relief from reality’s negativity. Mary O’Hara wrote about comedy for a BBC article titled “How Comedy Makes us Better People”: “Comedy is more than just a pleasant way to pass an evening, humour more than something to amuse. They’re interwoven into the fabric of our everyday existence. Whether you’re sharing an amusing story down the pub, making a self-deprecating joke after someone pays you a compliment or telling a dark joke at a funeral, humour is everywhere. (O’Hara)” This is certainly an accurate statement about modern comedy. Comedy is not sadness, but rather a way to forget the woes of everyday life. What is the point in humorous incidents and ridiculous jokes if they do not make a person smile or laugh so hard their gut …show more content…
You can find wide varieties of these crude pieces on the internet, and it is not uncommon to hear them in the hallways of schools, or whispered among students and followed by unjustified giggles. Attempting to lighten the seriousness of things such as sexual assault or terrorism is not comedy, no matter what people may say. Comedy is about laughing with the people being mocked, not lessening the seriousness of their situations. When we try to make ‘jokes’, we must keep one thing in mind: comedy is about laughter and joy. A joke is only funny when it is not blinding us to the reality of cruel
Have people ever wondered why they laugh when there is something funny said? Why people laugh has always been a big mystery up until a few years ago. According to a PhD titled Robert Provine, laughter has always and will always be known to mankind. Humor has made a great effect on many people, and inside of it consists of love, and kindness.Everyone knows how to laugh, people do not have to learn how to laugh. Humor and laughter comes naturally to most humans. “Why we laugh is simple, the answer is humor” (nbcnews.com). Humor comes from the word humorous. “At first, the word humorous came from referring to the body’s language and moods, but then it transitioned to the words we speak that laughter is the source of” (Vocabulary.com). Humor means the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech
Humor and laughter can benefit every person's mental health. According to Melinda Smith and Jeanne Segal, who are the authors in the Help Guide Organization, " Laughter makes us feel good. And the good feeling that we get when we laugh remains with us even after the laughter subsides. Humor helps us keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss." They are right, laughter make us feel good even when the laughter subsides. The reason why it still feels good even when the laughter is gone is because our minds keep replaying the scenario over and over again so that our mind will be able to relax, reduce the stress and the tension that is in our mind and our body. They also said that humor helps us overlook
Comedy consists of many components. It starts with the formation of comedic writing and leads to current day comedic skit. Early comedy dates back to Greek and Latin writers and is used to describe works with happy conclusions. Middle aged comedy shifted work to more substantial “happy endings”. A current definition of the word defined by the Oxford English Dictionary states, “That branch of the drama which adopts a humorous or familiar style, and depicts laughable characters and incidents” (Comedy, 2012). This definition brings us to the issue in review. Comedy is made to evoke laughter from its viewers; whether that laughter is from verbal stories, visual cues, or socially excluded ideas. In doing so, comedy constantly touches on issues of current events, human endeavor, and the too familiar issue of race.
Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists study humor because it is a fundamental culture value, but they still can’t determine why certain things make some people laugh and others not. There are “humor quotient” tests that are designed to measure an individual’s sense of humor, but these tests are questionable. These tests aren’t accurate because almost all humor depends on cultural background knowledge and language skills. Not every person in the whole world, or even in one country share the same background knowledge and skills, therefore they cannot have the same type of humor. “The fact remains that individuals vary in their appreciation of humor” (Rappoport 9). Since humor varies from individual to individual, humor lies in the individual. How successful or funny a joke is depends on how the person receives the joke, humor cannot be measured by a statistical
At stand up comedy clubs, audiences sit comfortably in their chairs with their drinks as the comedian stands on the stage and wittingly delivers joke after joke. Popular comedians include Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, and Amy Schumer. Presumably, many members of the audience would laugh and applaud after each joke. However, there are a few people who do not find the content amusing. So what do they laugh at? How do people predetermine what is funny and what is not? Simply, it is their personality and who they are as a person. If it is an eight year-old boy, he will find humor in passing gas; if they are distraught and overworked students, they will find humor in everything and pretend everything is fine. The type of comedy people appreciate constitutes
A world without comedy would be similar to a butter knife, it's dull, useless, and achieves very little. The world would be filled with impolite and obnoxious people. Comedy helps keep the flow of the world going. It allows people to laugh at one another and shrug off rude comments at the same time. It also creates a casual environment. Comedy is everywhere and it helps the world be a little less boring. Comedy can be found on televisions, the internet, and books, only to name a few. Comedy creates the illusion that things will get better; however, comedy gets better by making the situation worse. There are many types of comedy and some are: satire, farce, and one-liners. The definition of comedy is any story or event of a light, humorous nature that has a happy ending. One place where there was a reoccurring theme of comedy was in the movie Pure Luck. Three characteristics of comedy found in the movie were that logic and standard solutions do not always work in comical plots, comedy focuses on the irregularities in an otherwise orderly world, and comical characters consider the abnormal to be very normal.
Laughter and humor are ongoing topics amongst philosophers to ponder and to determine what makes one laugh, what’s funny? Thomas Hobbes’ theory, though short, is one that is a central point of reference, to date, when analyzing what makes us laugh. According to Hobbes “the passion of laughter is nothing but sudden glory arising from sudden conception of some eminency in ourselves, by comparison with the infirmity of others” (Hobbes 458). Hobbes believes that it’s one’s superior feelings over another person’s inferiorities that the superior finds humorous, which result in laughter. He also theorizes on Wit. Wit, by the comedic definition, is natural aptitude for using words and ideas in a quick and inventive way to create humor. Hobbes also views wit as being natural and consisting of: “celerity of imagining – that is swift succession of one thought to another – and steady direction to some approved end. (Hobbes 458). Wit, or one’s quick wittedness, can be put back into Hobbes’ equation that suggests what we find funny is that which one can experience from an unsympathetic distance allowing him to laugh at another’s infirmities.
There are several definitions for humor (2011), one being “[t]he ability to perceive, enjoy, or express what is amusing, comical, incongruous, or absurd”. The emission of smiles or laughter does not constitute something or someone is humorous, but is often a reaction to humor also known as mirth. Over the years, there have been several articles written on the use of humor in both the medical and psychological fields. In regard to the psychological field, this body of literature most often covers the definition of therapeutic humor, the benefits of humor in therapy, the risks and limitations associated with the use of humor in therapy, and therapeutic humor techniques with the need for training. The following statements will discuss the trends in the literature regarding these areas.
The source of my argument originates in Robert Heinlein novel, Stranger in a Strange Land. The main character, Valentine Michael Smith, is the lone survivor of the first mission to Mars. An infant at the time of the disaster, he is raised by the native Martians to be a Martian himself. Due to his upbringing, and lack of contact with his own kind, he lacks any knowledge of basic human nature. The Martians then hand over the hero to the second mission, where he returns to his own kind. Over many months of exposure to humans, he cannot get over one small thing, humor and what makes things funny. His thesis, which I have used as the header, is that comedy and humor is really a psychological coping mechanism that shields our minds from the terrible things in our world. By the end of the novel, he earns the distinction of being a human by finally learning to laugh.
