Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah’s voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out why.

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah’s pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

Name: Alex Standall

One of Hannah's original friends after moving. He wrote a list that said she was the "Best *** in the Freshman Class," which led to an assault and caused Jessica to stop being her friend.

Name : Jessica Davis

Hannah's other original friend at the school. She attacked Hannah after Alex released his list, believing Hannah caused their breakup. She was also assaulted by Bryce Walker late in the book.

Name : Tony

A friend and classmate of Clay and Hannah. He is responsible for making sure that everyone on Hannah’s list listens to the tapes.

Name : Bryce Walker

A popular guy at school and Justin Foley's friend. He sexually assaulted both Jessica Davis and Hannah Baker.

Mrs. Bradley, is the Communications class teacher at Liberty High School.

After her student Hannah Baker's death, she used her class to help raise awareness about suicide prevention. She is a recurring character and is portrayed by Keiko Agena.

Hannah’s classmate. Courtney has a reputation for being sweet and friendly, but she is cruel to Hannah when no one is looking.

A shy high school student who has a crush on Hannah and steals her notes of encouragement in peer communications class
