Years ago, when the sudden infestation of heart attacks begun to ravage the earth’s population, Mei drowned herself in the distractions of the internet in a feeble attempt to take her mind off her deceased family. By chance, Mei came across a forum for people who lost their families to the mysterious deaths infecting the earth. It was there that Mei met and bonded with Violet, a girl who was the same age and in similar circumstances. The two exchanged numbers and started to talk often.

The two girls talked regularly each week. Often, they talked about school and friends but sometimes they would confide in each other when a friend or teacher had died. But as more and more people disappeared from their lives, the less they talked to one another. The rapid decline of contact continued until they stopped talking all together.
Mei
Hey Violet, it’s been a while. How are you doing?
Violet
Sorry I can’t talk right now. My sister has died

what? I’m sorry. I’ll leave you alone
That marked the last time that the two talked to each other. This was goodbye. Until two years later…

Two years had passed since Mei and Violet lost touch and finally, the last person in Mei’s city died. Frantic and hysterical from the loss of the closest thing she had to family, Mei sent out a message to all her contacts. She knew it was no use, everyone had died right in front of her eyes but Mei was desperate and deluded by desperation.
Mei
is anyone there? I need help I’m all alone and no one is alive anymore.

Please someone answer me
For weeks, Mei dragged herself out of bed, barely making it through the days. The small string of hope that was keeping her from giving up on life, forced her to eat and drink when she didn’t have an appetite. Mei was determined to stay alive for the small chance that someone would reply. Unfortunately, the string of hope was wearing thin, and one abrupt day, it snapped. Mei was tired and hungry, but she didn’t care. All that she had left to do was wait and die. She blinked slowly and slumped down in her bed, hungry and tired, Mei closed her eyes and began to drift into eternal darkness. The remnants of her consciousness floated around a dark and cold void, waiting to be dissolved into the nothingness that it once was. But from the sea of black, a speck of light emerged and beckoned Mei out of the grave. She couldn’t tell what it was. It felt like a long awaited something was ready to be discovered, and as Mei opened her eyes, she realised it was a noise.
I will find you
Mei suddenly regained the energy that had slowly been drained out of her body. She didn’t know if it was shock or disbelief, but something had kept her holding on to life in that moment

PLEASE TELL ME THATS YOU
Mei
I’m sorry I’ll be back in a minute
Mei’s fingers trembled as she sent her last text. Her eyes began to water and clear drops rolled down her face and splashed onto her phone screen. But then Mei stopped trembling. The realisation that she wasn’t all alone had hit her like a drum. The spark that her mind had worked so hard to extinguish had just been doused with gasoline.
Mei
No. If it’s about you disappearing then I don’t want to talk
Violet
But we have to. I need you to know that I’m sorry. I acted like you knew nothing about my circumstances even though I knew you were all by yourself long before I was.
Violet
But I’m never making that mistake again.
Violet
Mei I don’t care if you hate me, you’re all I have left. No matter where you are, no matter how much you beg me to leave you alone, I will find you.
Violet
No it’s a promise.
Violet
You dragged me out of a dark place those years ago. It’s my turn to save you
Mei
I’m coming to find you too then
Violet
You need to eat, sleep and drink water regularly.
Mei
Wait how do you know I haven’t been doing that?
Violet
I might as well die with you

Despite Violet telling Mei to go to sleep, Mei stayed up all night staring at her texts, a hint of a smile and blush creeping across her face.
