The Underdog
Chapter 1
The world was not what it used to be. The technologies had advanced as reached to its incredible heights, flying cars you can see when you look up to the sky. The sky is not even feel like sky anymore. It was way too bright to find the difference and calls it the time of night. Trains are speeding across from one tower to next. The trees are encircled with dim glow blueish light, making the surface little darker than sky.
Yet, beneath these achievements lies a heavy price, a burden borne by those less fortunate who are forced to pay the cost with their own suffering and sacrifice.
Among this dark alleyway, there's a girl lived with her mother, named Ross
Shattering glass can be heard from inside the house.
Mom
Everything is your fault *screaming*
Mom
*I wouldn't have to live like that only if
Mom
If you hadn't been born
Mom
*screamed again, while getting wasted*
She held her daughter by her hair
and slapped her soo hard, that she fall back and got wounded as she got prick by the small rough edge on the wooden floor
Ross
*I keep on sobbing, but she didn't stop. After a moment, I fall silent, and I let her finish her anger on me, only prayed just wanting everything to be stopped*
Ross
* why can't she love me. I am the only daughter of her"
Ross
*Why it is everything my fault*
Minutes passed by, her mother stopped and got enough of her as her daughter remain silent.
She scoff before leaving her alone in the room.
Ross
* everything feels empty. I fixated my eyes onto the clock hanging on the wall, ticking in broken way as I watched the clock for a while. Its making creaking sound as the pointer couldn't able to move further as it stuck in continues loop of going back after going forward again. I feel the similar way. Is this how my life going to be, I thought*
She left the room. Mindlessly walking in the empty road, by herself. Not caring a single bit about her feet sending all those tingling sensations. Her feet start to bleed since some broken glass stuck to her feet
She stopped briefly right in front of the bakery shop. Her movements paused as she directed her eyes right at the different cakes which are placed near the counter section.
A moment passed, still she glued to the same place.
grandma
"oh ~my~goodness, dear"
grandma
"what happened to you child"
Ross
* those sweet melodious voice, diverted my attention to an old lady, who looked neat and clean, dressed nicely with the silk top and long fitted skirt wrapped around her. Compared to mine as I was standing still wearing shabby clothes I found in the side road for months*
old lady opened her bag and took out one of her handkerchief. She started cleaning, after she bent down onto her knees, placing Ross small feet on her clean shirt.
But the blood won't stop.
She quickly dialed her number and asked one on the phone to come to the place immediately.
Ross
*The way she talks on the phone, is quite impressive. For a brief moment, I felt like the person who is standing before me is someone important.*
Ross
* I was soo lost in thought, I didn't realise the black car parked right in front of us*
grandma
Come, dear. Those wounds you have is no good
grandma
That needs to taken care of immediately
Ross
* she gestured me to get inside the car. I push myself into the car.*
Ross
* The only thing I want to be to get out of this place, somewhere far*
Ross
* It's been over 15 years, my mom still refused to acknowledge me as her daughter*
Ross
*It's hurt. Hurt every time. To the point it suffocates me*
Ross
*I closed the door behind me*
Chapter 2
The opening of the door, revealed the heart of bustling cityscapes, where the hospital stood tall with its shining armor, reflecting the world around it. It almost made the scene magical, as the colored lights from the city hits the glass, and reflected back, making it shimmers like a beacon of hope.
As the little girl stood at the front, with widened eyes, watching everything with an awe
Shortly after, she was lifted into the air and settled in the arms of man who had been driving the car earlier.
His strong arms were comforting, and she felt safe nestled against him.
They, along with grandmother, moved to the front door of the elevator. Once inside, grandmother pressed the button for the 14th floor.
Ross
* As the elevator moved upwards, I found the city growing smaller and smaller, but more beautiful as we rose. I couldn't take my eyes off*
grandma
"Look, how high, we're going"
Her grandmother said softly, trying to make ease of the situation.
grandma
"isn't it beautiful, dear?"
Ross nodded as her eyes wide with wonder
Ross
"It's like we're floating above the world, Grandma. I've never seen anything like it"
Her grandma smiles, gently patted her head
After a short time, they reached the designated floor. The door slids open, revealing the walls are freshly painted with white paint and a crafted marble floor. The hallway was decorated with green plants placed close to the walls. The gentle hum coming from the air conditioning, makes the place more lively.
At the end of the hallway, they stood in front of the room. The man gently put the Ross down, and grandmother took her little hands into her warm, big, weary hands, giving it a gentle squeeze to see if she ready
She gave a small nod in response.
She held grandma's hand little tight as they stepped into the room
