I heard someone shout behind me. I turned my head and saw my friend Jiho running towards me.
Taesu
Hey, no need to yell.
He sat down across from me at the table. I was at a breakfast bar in the middle of town.
Jiho
So you know how I've been looking for a job recently?
Taesu
Yeah? Did you get one?!
Taesu
Well then why are we here?
Jiho
Because I have an interview for the new boba shop down the road.
Taesu
Never would have guessed that.
My phone buzzed and I looked down at it. The screen read [mom]. Then it started ringing.
Taesu
I have to take this.
I stood up from the table and answered.
Tae's Mom
📞Yah! Where the hell are you?!
Taesu
📞At the café with Jiho. Why?
Tae's Mom
📞Get your 🍑 home! Now!

Taesu
📞Yes ma'am. I'll head back.
Tae's Mom
📞Hurry! Take a taxi if you need to.
Taesu
(Not even going to say "I love you?")
I walked back towards the table Jiho was at.
Taesu
I have to head home.
Jiho
Oh ok. Well see you later.
Taesu
(Should I get a taxi?)
Taesu
(I want to take my time.)
Taesu
(I shouldn't be in a rush.)
I walked down the street and passed people rushing by me. Everything seemed so dull.
I lowered my head and continued walking the oh so familiar route. I turned left… then right… then another right… it all just happened subconsciously.
I stopped. At the steps. Gazing up at the apartment building in front of me.
My eyes shifted to one of the windows.
Taesu
(Third floor... Room 352.)
I gripped my key in my hand and sat on the steps.
Mom was pissed. And I knew that. She probably had a bad say at work. And she was probably going to let that anger out on me.
I stood up and walked up the steps and entered the building.
I took a step to the right to take the elevator but stopped.
Something didn't feel right.
I looked to the left, towards the stairs.
There was a door separating the stairs from the lobby… I wondered why.
I starting walking towards the door without thinking. I had never taken the stairs before.
I stopped at the door. Then turned the door knob and stepped inside.
There was no windows, no people, nothing. Just the stairs.
I started ascending the steps. It was strange. I've lived here for at least 10 years, and I've never walked up these stairs.
I reached the second floor… there was a boy sitting on the window-sill. He had a lollipop.
God how long it's been since I've had one if those.
He looked young, but not much younger than me.
He was looking out the window and seemed to be in his thoughts.
He jumped and turned to me.
Unknown
Hi? Do I know you?
Minjun
Jeon Minjun. What's yours?
Taesu
Kim Taesu. Are you waiting for someone?
The yell came from the stairs above us. There was another boy at the top of the stairs looking down at us.
Unknown
Minjun! Oh there you are! I've been looking everywhere for you.
The boy came down the stairs to us as Minjun sat there silently.
Unknown
Minjun, where have you been?
Minjun
Why are you even that worried? It's not your job to look after me.
Unknown
No but Eomma sent me to look for you so technically in this case it is.
Minjun
Because last I checked she had told Jichi to watch me.
Minjun
Are you just covering for her 🍑 again or did Eomma actually send you?
Unknown
And I don't suppose you see Jichi here. Do you?
Minjun
No because she's probably bar hopping with her friends and she probably paid you to cover for her... again.
Unknown
I don't know where she is but what I do know is that we need to go home-
Taesu
I'm sorry but am I interrupting something?
Taesu
I feel like I shouldn't be here.
They both turned and looked at me.
Unknown
Oh, hi sorry for all the confusion. Actually we were just heading home…right Minjun?
Minjun
No Mr. Taesu, I don't know this man. Can you please take him away?
The boy pointed at the man next to him as he said it. Said man looked to be about my age. Definitely older than Minjun but not an adult.
Taesu
Um... I don't think I should-
Unknown
Minjun don't lie to him! You better fcking know me! We live in the same house!
Minjun
Uhh... I don't know what you're talking about strange human I've never met.
He turned to me and bowed.
Unknown
I'm so sorry for all the trouble he caused you.
Hansu
And for the record I am his older brother, Jeon Hansu.
Hansu
And he does know me.
Hansu
We should get going now.
Hansu
It was nice meeting you.
Hansu grabbed him by the ear and started dragging him up the stairs.
Taesu
(What an interesting family.)
I sighed and remembered I was supposed to be going home as well.
Then taking a deep breath I proceeded up the stairs after them.
When I made it to my floor I started heading to my room 352.

Chapter 2

I stopped and took the key out of my pocket. And with a deep breath I unlocked it and went inside.
There was just yelling… I blocked it out and went into my room. If my mom hadn't noticed me, yet maybe I won't get beat… but I doubt it.
She's beating my older brother right now.
Probably because I didn't get home when she wanted me to.
Taesu
(I should probably check on Taeji.)
Taeji is my younger sister. I have three siblings but only one sister.
I guess the three of us boys treasure her.
I left my room and headed to hers.
All I heard was muffled yells. They were probably screaming profanities at each other. That's what tended to happen when she was like this.
I knocked on Taeji's door and entered.
She was curled up in a ball on the floor shaking. She never really liked yelling. I went over to her and bent down beside her.
Taesu
*Quietly* Hey... Taeji...
I spoke softly to avoid startling her.
There was no response. I said it again when suddenly, she picked her head up, laid it on my shoulder, and hugged me tightly.
They were still yelling outside.
My older brother didn't normally take the beatings and when he didn't all hell went loose.
My younger brother is in middle school, 7th grade. He is probably getting home soon. Or he's outside on the steps of the building.
I heard the front door open, then close.
I heard my mom's footsteps approach the room. They stopped outside the door.
Tae's Mom
*Shouts* Taemin!
Taemin was my Hyung. The front door opened, and closed. I'm guessing he left.
It was Taeil, my younger brother.
The footsteps traveled away from the door.
Now that I think about it, mom wasn't always like this.
I guess it started when dad died.
He died while she was pregnant with Taeji.
Taesu
*Quietly* Hey Taeji.
She let out a small noise.
Sort of like a hum but quieter.
She knew how to speak, and we know she can.
I guess she stopped talking when she was about 6.
Taesu
*Quietly* I'm going to go get Taeil. Ill be back. You stay here.
She cuddled in closer to me and made another sound.
She didn't want me to leave.
I've always been the one to take care of my siblings. Even my hyung.
Taesu
*Quietly* How about I go get Taeil and bring him back in here with you.
She reluctantly agreed and, trying to hide my fear, went out to get Taeil.
Him and Mom were yelling. I wasn't paying much attention.
Taesu
*Yells* For fcks sake! Listen to me!
They both turned to look at me.
Tae's Mom
Taesu? When did you get here?
Mom looked at me confused. At the same moment Taeil had run up and hid behind me.
Taesu
Please stop yelling. Haven't you had enough?
I tried to bargain with her, but she wouldn't hear it. She started yelling more profanity at me and I ended up covering Taeil ears.
I don't know why I did. Maybe it was to try to block the noise out from my ears.
She continued to yell, and I took Taeil and walked back to Taeji's room. She was still on the floor… shaking. Taeil went running up to her to comfort her.
Mom was still yelling. Not sure what it was about. I had blocked it out. I knew if I tried to stop her it would just urge her on more. So I stayed silent. I'm pretty sure she was calling me obscene names and saying how bad of a child I was. And that was based on my siblings' faces.
I still had the yelling tuned out, and my back was turned to the door. We stayed like that for a good 10 minutes before mom finally let up.
After that I sat next to my siblings and hugged them both. Taeji was still crying and Taeil looked as if he was about to.
I went to stand but was met with a whimper from Taeji. She was clinging to my shirt.
Taesu
Would you like me to stay here with you?
She nodded slightly. Taeil went to leave but she stopped him too.
She tugged on his shirt twice, it was her way of saying "you", then she pointed to the bed behind me.
Her room has two day beds.
One was beside her desk and across from her dresser. The other was above her desk, on a loft.
Taeil
You want me to sleep there?
Taeil
Then where will Hyung sleep?
She looked around the small room.
Taesu
I'll sleep on the floor. It's fine.
She turned and looked at me in disbelief, then shook her head "no".
Taesu
Then where would you like me to sleep?
She looked around again. Then pointed to her bed.
Taesu
But that's your bed.
Taesu
Do you want me to lay with you?
Taesu
Oh… ok. Well we will go get changed into our pajamas, and you should too. But we'll be back.
Me and Taeil left the room and went to get changed.
