On The Bus

It's so exciting to be starting at University next Monday.
Elya
Today is Orientation Day.
I hope to make some new friends…
Elya boards the bus to University.
There isn't a spare seat, so Elya has to stand.
Jeremy
Hi. Please take my seat.
Elya
Oh really? Are you sure?
Jeremy
I've been sitting for some time, and I don't mind standing for the rest of the trip.
Jeremy
You seem to have a heavy backpack.
Elya
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Elya takes the vacated aisle seat, and puts her bag on her lap.
The man meanwhile moves to stand toward the back of the bus, to make way for more people to come on the bus later.
Elya
* He is such a gentleman.
I had to brisk-walk for quite a bit to the bus stop…
Could he perhaps see my 'glisten'? *
Elya remembers being told that horses sweat, men perspire and ladies glisten.
However, she is pretty sure she feels as if she is sweating like a 🐎 now.
Elya
* He looks a bit older..
Wonder if is he a mature-age student, or maybe even employed at the University?
Or maybe he is simply travelling in that direction, unrelated to the University? *
Elya
* I really should not let an older person vacate their seat for me. *
Elya
* Though this time, I felt I shouldn't be ungracious to reject his offer. *
Passenger
Excuse me.
My stop is coming up.
Elya wakes from her thoughts, and smiles.
Then she shrinks into her seat (while hugging her bag) to let the other passenger from the inner window seat to get past.
As he leaves, she scuttles in to the window seat.
When the bus stops again, few passengers alight, before more passengers boarded the bus.
A girl (of similar age to Elya) came and sat beside her.
Felicity
Hi, I'm Felicity 😄
Elya
Oh hi, I'm Elya 😃
Nice to meet you.
Elya
Are you heading to the University?
Felicity
Yes! What about you?
Felicity could already guess that Elya was also heading to the University.
However, she didn't want to appear presumptuous to someone she had just met.
Actually, Felicity is quite a presumptuous girl.
However, she wanted to be more polite, at least until she has become more familiar with someone.
Elya
Yes, I am heading there as well!
Elya
I am starting this year, in Engineering.
Felicity
Really? That's great!
Felicity
Me too, I'm also starting in Engineering!
Both girls are ecstatic to be meeting with a coursemate on the bus.
They each hope that they could be good friends 👭
Campus Orientation Day
The girls alighted the bus when it arrived at the University bus stop. Most of the people on the bus also came down at this stop.
Felicity
This is so exciting. I wonder which clubs would be good to join?
Felicity
Which clubs would you like to join in?
Elya
Well, I am thinking about the Music Club, and the maybe the Art Club.
Elya
But since I won't be studying either Art or Music, I am not sure how that would go.
Elya
I think maybe those could provide good balance to coursework. What about you?
Felicity
That's really a good idea! I was thinking about the French Language Club, and also maybe the Crazy Writers Club.
Felicity
But I am not sure whether my French is good enough, or whether the Crazy Writers might be a bit wild for me.
Felicity
* ponders a little * 🤔
Felicity
You know what, seems to me that you have given this a lot of thought.
Felicity
Since we are in the same course, I think I will consider more seriously to join the clubs that you choose.
Elya
Oh really? I would like that, to have someone familiar come along with me.
Elya
I think if we both join any clubs together, we would be more comfortable.
Elya
Anyway if we don't like it, we can always move on, right?
While University classes officially start next Monday, and different students have different class times based on the units they have selected, today is the Campus Orientation Day which begins with formal introduction for all students at the same time.
That is probably why the buses are so packed, even though it's almost 10am.
The girls walked to the Engineering Faculty Building together, discussing casually about their classes and the clubs.
Familiarity Over Time
As the girls chatted, they got to know each other a little more.
Felicity
* Looks like Elya is somewhat a deep thinker. *
Felicity
* At first impression, she seems a little shy. But that is only because she doesn’t really say much more than is necessary *

* If I hang around her, I think I can learn a lot from her. Maybe I can take it a bit easier as well, if she does the more difficult thinking *
Elya
* Felicity seems very sincere and casual. She is so friendly, and willing to chat with almost anyone. *
Elya
* It’s nice to have such a cheerful person as a friend *
Elya
* I almost feel like I need to protect her in case she might, in her simplicity, easily get into trouble. *
Elya
* I do not want her to have to change from this innocence, which is quite beautiful in a very special way *
Felicity
Oh wow, look at the crowd at the Engineering Faculty Building.
Felicity
Quick Elya, come let’s try to get a nice shaded spot to sit at before they officially start!
Elya
Yes, that’s a good idea.
They sat down under the shade of a tree. Elya looks at the sky and makes sure they sit in a position that will remain in the shade, even as the sun moves in the next hour or so.
There were not so many people yet, near where they chose to sit on the grass.
In different ways, both girls are taking care of each other. Felicity looks at the immediate needs, while Elya takes it one step further.
