It was a quiet, cool, and crisp autumn evening. There were a few stars out though the skies above we're mostly empty. It couldn't have been later then nine thirty at night. The lanterns in the streets gave it a beautiful yet somewhat sorrowful glow. However the person on the rooftop was too into their thoughts to notice. They had gotten done with their most recent job and were focused on the task at hand. Their footsteps were quiet as they slowly walked along the rooftops of this busy city street, that is until they heard someone jump down from a higher rooftop. The rooftop the mysterious person jumped from was roughly ten feet above their own. They quickly tug their cloak's hood down just a bit, to make sure their face wasn't revealed. After all, why else would one tug down a hood?
They could tell who it was just by their footsteps as the mysterious person walked closer. They chuckle as they quickly bolt, their silver cloak swaying in the wind as they run along the rooftops.
The streets below bustle with noise as the two run along the rooftops of the usually quiet town. The bustling noise of the people below masked the sound of their footsteps quite well. They weren't sure why exactly the streets were this busy this time of night. Yes it's true the city of Marron has quite a busy night life but never this busy. Could it just be the time of year? Quite possibly. Could it be the fact that acceptance letters would be sent out soon? That is also a possibility. However the cloaked person didn't have time to ponder as the mysterious figure continues to gain ground and quickly catches up.
He was, honestly, way to overcome with the idea of catching up to them and missed the jump to the next rooftop. It wasn't even that far of a jump. Truly all he had to do was extend a foot and not fall, however he obviously wasn't capable of such as he fell through the narrow space. Despite him deserving a good hit on the head, our dear protagonist was far too kind for their own good.
They knew why he was chasing them and honestly found it hilarious. This mysterious person was the right hand man of a headmaster of a near by academy. This academy was a rather prestigious one, home to all of the best fighters in the land. This was an academy where multiple elite members of the royal guard's were trained. It cares not from what kingdom you hail nor your intent, all it cares about is one's skill. You see this headmaster had been searching for our dear protagonist for years, how many remains secret, but years nonetheless.
They found it funny that no matter who the headmaster sent, rather they be students, teachers, fellow headmasters, or undercover operatives, none were able to catch them let alone deliver a single letter. At first they were annoyed that he was so persistent but they soon turned it into a fun game for themself. They wanted to see how many different people he was willing to send, how many people he could spare, and how many they could dispose of for the time. Of course they hadn't and wouldn't kill anyone, they do have some form of morals. By dispose I simply mean get rid of for a short while, make go on leave simply due to the mental stress or forced onto leave because of injury.
Now this fellow, he was intriguing to them hence why they were going to help and play their game with him for awhile longer. So they swiftly extended the bottom of their staff down and scooped him up, all while being careful not to reveal their face as that, along with their voice, seemed like the only non personal thing he didn't know about them.
The man scoffed. "Wow. You really do have morals huh Cloak?"
They scoff themself and roll their eyes. They give him a little two finger wave then start running off again.
The man rolls his eyes and groans. "And here we go again!" He laughs, his tone seemed joking, like he enjoyed their little game of cat and mouse. Him being the cat in this situation of course, or rather that's what he thinks. This man wasn't absurdly tall for his age however he wasn't average either. He was around five foot eleven, maybe six foot on a good day. He seemed like an unusual person and honestly? That's an understatement. He had dark mauve hair, magenta eyes, and pale skin which just made everything else stand out more.
However the most unusual thing about him was his tattoo right under his left eye. It was of four dark pink circles shaped in a square, it was odd yes but it made sense to him and only him.
Another odd thing about this man was his sense of style. He never wore armor or anything of the like. No matter what, when, or where, he always wore this positively stupid pink hoodie. Now if it was a plain pink hoodie it wouldn't be so bad, however the hood had ears and a face of its own. It appeared to be a bear of some sort, it's eyes were black and had lines through the middle. The inside of its ears were lavender in color and stood out against the barrage of pink shades all over him.
His name was also quite an odd one as well, it was of latin origin and means to conquer. This mysterious pink man's name? Vincentius, Vincentius Carrow. His name roughly means to conquer a stone which is quite amusing.
Vincentius smiles a tooth grin and starts running after the one who he calls "Cloak". This, of course, wasn't their actual name however it was the only way he knew to address them as he wasn't aware of their sobriquet.
However he knew many other things about this person. For instance he knew where they were headed, their strategy, and their love for games. Light danced across his dark eyes as he looks down at the busy city street. He decided against playing Cloak's game for now, knowing he could always figure out where they were again one day. Besides, he knew not playing along would only make them angry and loose their guard.
Cloak chuckles as they hear Vincentius' footsteps stop and slowly disappear into the distance. "I suppose he got tired." They think as they slow their running. They smile as they start to walk again, hundreds of thoughts running through their mind. They pouted a bit as they wondered why he'd suddenly stop chasing them. They knew he had made it his personal mission to deliver that letter and to be the first person to knowingly see their face.
They sigh, knowing it was another fifteen minutes before they'd get home. They truly didn't want to walk. "I shouldn't have left my bike." They think and shake their head. Their usual mode of transportation, a purple motorcycle which was most definitely stolen, had been left at an abandoned building for safety as it would've been too loud to ride to their previous destination.
They take this time to ponder why the town below was so busy. They look down and scoff, their eyes landing on a slightly younger dark raspberry haired girl with an odd appearance. This girl was famous amongst some groups for the way she could best any magician in the area, whether they be the actual magic kind or the slight of hand kind. Cloak could easily see through her lies and very poor use of magical deception. After all, Cloak was the one to create that sort of magic. The kind of magic in question is called Apateónes. It's the ability to trick or hide anyone/anything around you, including use of other magics. Which in this case was what the girl was using it for.
Cloak rolls their eyes and clicks their tongue, annoyed that someone would use their magic for something so trivial. Sure hiding what sort of magic you possess is useful, but why would she tire herself out by using two types of magic at once when she could just use one? Alas, despite wanting to set that girl in the right direction they did not want to waste more time on something unbeneficial for themself. They avert their eyes and look ahead once more. They shake their head as they hear the crowd cheer and laugh at the girl's victory for the thousandth time. They always found people who loved the spotlight to be weird in some way. Who would want to have eyes on them constantly? Especially in today's society, the less eyes on you the better. After all, this cheer and excitement was just bound to attract more Willows, a group of which they just got done with.
You see nowadays Willows are more of a problem than ever. Willows are a species of fae which are attracted to and feed off positive emotions. Which usually wouldn't be so bad as in the past their services were of great use to the world, however the more recent generation has gotten much more greedy.
Some even help the gods with designing each individual's proficiency. Everyone in this world can use magic however are proficient in one specific thing designed to aid the user in their path but also designed to be a reflection of themself.
Cloak sighs softly as they continue to walk home. Their home wasn't too far now, about another five minutes away. Usually if they knew they were being followed they wouldn't go home but as they deemed things fine they decided too. Nothing seemed off as Cloak approached the ivory walls of the building, the lights were off, windows closed, doors locked, all seemed as it should.
They chuckle softly as they walk inside and hear a small thunk coming from upstairs. Cloak smiles as they look around the perfectly clean gothic style café. "All seems well." They think as they lock the door behind themself and walk behind the counter, towards the spiral staircase which leads to the apartment and flat. The staircase itself was black and made of some sort of metal which reflected the autumn colored lights of the lanterns outside. The front of the store was entirely windows so the café was illuminated quite well.
Cloak chuckles once more as they hear another thunk, assuming their shade or chameleon had knocked something over. They quietly walk down the hall and towards the door. They smile gently as they unlock it and walk inside the dimly lit apartment. The only light was coming from the window in the living room as well as a few candles that were sporadically placed. They chuckle and shake their head to see a vase, which had lilacs, was knocked over. Usually their shade, who's name is Xena, would be with them as that's typically how things go. However Cloak didn't think they needed her so they told her to stay home.
Xena caws once more as if to tell Cloak to come over. Cloak chuckles once more and shuts the door behind themself. "Xena, cut it out. I get you're mad at me but really?" They say, their voice smooth and bold with a hint of some sort of accent. They obviously hadn't been paying attention as there was a man sitting in their living room.
The man chuckles. "Well well, looks like I finally get to hear your voice." It was the man from before, Vincentius.
Cloak jumps a little in surprise. "Dammit. How did you even get in here?"
He chuckles. "I'm skilled. That's all toots."
They growl quietly and walk into the living room, Xena landing on their shoulder as they do so. "Whatever. Just don't call me that." Their voice was harsh and cold now, it had quickly lost that playful tone once they realized who was there.
Vincentius smiles, balancing a blue envelope with gold accents in his finger. "I told you I'd catch you didn't I?"
Cloak rolls their eyes as they sit across from him, waving Xena off in the process. "I suppose." They keep their head down, not wanting him to know anything else. "You win. Now are you going to hand over that stupid letter?"
He smirks and yanks it away as they try to snatch it. "Nah.. I wanna know something first. Why is the old man so interested in you anyway?"
Cloak sighs. "That's none of your business. I just have something he wants, that's all."
Vincentius' leans forward with interest. "Really? Hm, okay then. Since I know you won't be willing to tell me what it is, how about you tell me something else?"
They roll their eyes. "Fine. Let's just get this over with." They stand, their face still covered. "Stay there. Don't move a muscle. I'll be back in a moment."
Vincentius nods, knowing when to not push his luck.
Cloak walks away and into their bedroom. They carefully take off their cloak, gently placing it on a hook by their bed. They walk over to a set of drawers and grab some sort of bandage out of it. Cloak gently wraps it around their head, making sure to cover their easily identifiable eyes. They pull some sections of hair out of the bandages as they walk back towards the living room.
Vincentius was taken aback when he saw Cloak. Their face looked nothing like he had imagined. He swore up and down that they'd have sharp cheekbones and some sort of tattoo that was easily recognizable, thinking that was their reason for hiding their face. Instead however he was met with soft features, plump ish cheeks, abnormally pale skin, and full lips coated with dark purple lipstick. Almost as dark as their hair which was purple in color, almost like the center of an amethyst geode. He laughs. "Woah! You really look nothing like I imagined!"
Cloak sighs. "Yeah yeah whatever."
He smiles as he takes in their appearance for the first, and most likely last, time. "Say, where's your shade? Was it with you today?"
Shade's are a part of a person's soul. It feels whatever it's master feels, including emotions. Shade's typically cannot stray far from their masters so for Vincentius to have not seen Cloak's sooner was odd. However once a shade's master has died they shade itself doesn't. The shade are cursed creatures, once their master dies they are forced to wander the world until it's collected by the soul of it's master.
"Is that your question?" Cloak asks as they sit down in the plush armchair once more.
Vincentius jumps a little and quickly shakes his head. "N- no-!" He sputters out, not wanting to waste what he thinks is his only question. "Sorry, anyway my question. What is your proficiency?"
Cloak visibly tenses as he asks. "Why do you want to know that?"
Vincentius chuckles. "Why else would the old man be so interested in you if your proficiency isn't something awesome and useful?"
Cloak chuckles. "I wouldn't call it awesome. However it is sort of useful, not for anyone else though."
He laughs and shakes his head. "Okay. What is it then?"
Cloak raises an eyebrow. "I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours." They smirk.
He rolls his eyes. "Really? Fine then. My proficiency is called téchnasma. Basically I can make anyone believe anything I want."
Cloak smirks. "Alright, fair is fair." They cross their legs. "Just don't go telling everyone you hear?"
Vincentius nods. "Understood."
Cloak takes a breath. "My proficiency is called kryfós desmós. It's the ability to create bonds with someone. The bonds can be used for anything, it also makes me extremely stealthy."
Vincentius' eyes widened. "No wonder the old man wants you! You could be a human lie detector!" He exclaims, shooting up from his seat.
They growl quietly. "Quiet down and sit. By the gods you're such a loud mouth."
He laughs quietly as he sits back down. "Yeah, sorry 'bout that."
They sigh. "It's fine. I'm going to grab a drink, do you want anything?"
Vincentius gasps. "Wow. Cloak is actually being nice. Sure, whatever's fine."
Cloak growls. "Watch it. I could always put something extra in it."
Vincentius laughs and nods. "Noted." As Cloak leaves he stands and starts wandering around. He smiles as he sees their pet chameleon clinged to his perch in the corner. "You've got some cute pets toots." He says as he gently pets it with two fingers.
Cloak growls from the kitchen. "I told you not to call me that." They peek around the corner and let a small smile slip as they see how happy the chameleon looks. "His name's Luck." They say then duck back into the kitchen.
Vincentius smiles. "Is he your shade?" He asks, still stroking the small frail creature.
Cloak chuckles. "Because having a chameleon as a shade is useful." They say as they walk back in with two tea cups full of purple liquid. "Here."
Vincentius smiles wider as he takes the cup of tea. "What's this?" He questions before drinking.
Cloak laughs. "It's butterfly tea dummy. Just drink it, I didn't do anything to it I swear." They sit down in the plush armchair once more, calmly sipping their tea. "You really seem to want to know about my shade. But what about yours?"
Vincentius shakes his head. "Not until I know yours. It's only fair after all." He sips his tea, the woody taste catching him off guard. The wood taste was a little strong but the sweetness of the tea compliments it well. "Hey! This is pretty good!"
Cloak laughs softly. "Yeah? I'm glad you like it. As for the shade business." They gently set their cup down on the wooden table in front of them. Cloak brings their fingers to their lips and whistle sharply. Xena flies around the corner, seemingly coming from the bedroom. She caws loudly as she lands on Cloak's shoulder.
"This is Xena, my shade. She may appear to be a raven however she is far from it."
Vincentius nods as he takes a closer look. He gasps as he realizes the bird has no eyes, only dark empty sockets. "What exactly is she?.." He asks, his curiosity gaining by the minute.
Cloak chuckles. "She is a unique little thing." They gently scratch the bird's head. "She is a Nachtkrapp."
Xena seems offended and turns her head away.
Vincentius laughs. "She's got quite the attitude huh?" He gently sips his tea. "You said she's unique, but there's nothing all that unique about a Nachtkrapp in these parts."
Cloak smirks. "Xena, would you mind?" They ask, handing her their cup of tea which now was about half empty.
Xena caws, still looking pretty offended. She takes the cup in her beak then flies off to the kitchen.
Vincentius cocks his head. "Huh-?" Before he could finish his sentence Cloak cuts him off.
"While we wait for her, care to show off your shade, pinky?" They chuckle, knowing that nickname would aggravate him.
Vincentius rolls his eyes. "Fine fine." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a silver bell. He rings it twice, two quiet but notable dings come from the bell. The air grows a bit hotter as a flying monkey appears on Vincentius' head. "This is my shade, Kuzo."
Kuzo flaps his light blue wings happily, they stand out quite a bit against his bright orange fur and green eyes.
Cloak chuckles softly. "Of course you'd have a monkey." They shake their head then look to Kuzo. "Hello there."
Kuzo smiles, exposing his sharp teeth causing Cloak to chuckle again.
"He's an expressive little thing isn't he?" They smile. Cloak then turns to look into the hall as they hear footsteps. "Ah, here she comes. About time."
Xena scoffs as she walks into the room. She had more of a human shape now though her arms were wings still. "Oh hush it! I'm still mad at you!" Her voice had a certain tone, one of playful pettiness. She gently hands Cloak their tea, which looked a bit bluer then before.
"Thank you, you may have a seat." Cloak says, their voice calm as they stare at Vincentius and Kuzo through the bandages. "See, I told you she was unique." Xena smiles innocently and waves as she sits on the arm of Cloak's chair.
Vincentius and Kuzo's mouths were agape, they obviously weren't expecting this. "She can shapeshift!!!" They both shout in unison.
Cloak laughs. "Yes, however only into this form."
Xena giggles. "He talks too!!!" She says as she runs up to Kuzo and scoops him up. She spins him around happily.
Cloak rolls their eyes. "Put him down. It's rude to touch other people's shades without their permission. And yes. He can talk, all shades can. Some can even speak multiple languages."
Vincentius chuckles. "She's fine. I take it she doesn't interact with others much?" He shivers a bit as he faintly feels feathers brushing against him.
As Cloak starts to answer, Xena cuts them off. "Nope!" She answers quickly. "I don't get out much either." Though she has no eyes her sockets were still expressive and gave off a slight sense of sadness.
Cloak sighs. "I prefer to keep her home and unknown for personal reasons."
Vincentius nods. "I see." He sets the blue envelope on the table, sliding it across. "There, I almost forgot."
Cloak nods. "Thank you. Now get out. I'd like to sleep."
Xena pouts. "Awe!!! Come onnnnn!" She whines. "They just got here! And it's soooo not boring now!"
Vincentius laughs softly. "It's alright Xena, we have some more work to be doing anyway."
Kuzo whines. "I hate workkkkk." He groans, snuggling into Xena's warm feathers causing Vincentius to shiver again.
Xena pouts. "Can't they stay the night? Pleaseeeee!" She begs as she turns to Cloak.
Cloak sighs. "Xena-"
Kuzo looks over as well. "Yeah! Please!!!" Both shadess gave their masters cute pouty faces, wanting to stay together longer.
Vincentius cracks immediately. "Oh fine! Only if Cloak agrees! This is their place after all!"
Cloak sighs. "Xena." Their voice was a bit firm, causing Kuzo and Vincentius to flinch. "If." They begin, Xena already starting to bounce up and down. "I allow them to stay. They'll be your responsibility. Got it?"
Xena squeals, shaking Kuzo back and forth happily. "Okay!!" She exclaims, probably way to loud for her own good. The long feathers where her ears should be begin to flap happily.
Cloak puts up a hand. "And." Xena pouts a little as they do this. "They'll have to help with the café in the morning. Deal?" They ask, extending their hand.
Xena jumps up and down happily. "Deal!!!" She screams and extends a feathered arm, shaking Cloak's hand. Gold string floats around the arms then dissipates.
Vincentius' eyes widen. "Woah!! Was that your proficiency!?" He yells, getting as excited as Xena now.
Cloak chuckles. "Yes yes. That's one of the many things it can do."
Xena chuckles. "Come on! Y'all can stay in the flat across the hall!" She then runs out of the apartment, Kuzo still in her arms.
"Help meeeeee!!!!!" He yells, his voice fading as they exit the apartment.
Vincentius laughs. "She's definitely something huh?"
Cloak chuckles. "Yeah. Sometimes I regret making her my shade, she rarely takes things seriously."
Vincentius laughs. He finishes his tea then stands. "Well, I 'spose this makes us neighbors now huh?"
Cloak shakes their head. "Don't get ahead of yourself. This is a one time thing."
Vincentius chuckles. "Whatever you say toots." He gives a two finger wave then walks out of the apartment.
Xena returns a few minutes later, still as happy as before. "Yay! We have neighbors!!"
Cloak sighs as they take off the bandage around their eyes. They look up at Xena from the chair. "Please. Don't make me regret this okay?"
Xena giggles as she nods excitedly. "Okay!! I won't!! Promise!!!"
Cloak sighs. "Alright. I'm trusting you. Remember, those two are your responsibility."
Xena nods more, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "Got it!!" Cloak smiles and stands, grabbing the two now empty cups of tea.
"Go get ready for bed, I'll be there in a moment." Xena nods and runs off towards the bedroom. Cloak puts the cups in the set then walks back into the living room. They gently grab Luck from his perch and walk to their bedroom. They gently set Luck in his cage then they begin to get ready for bed. Xena is already passed out haphazardly on the bed, taking up most of the space.
Cloak chuckles as they walk into the bathroom and brush their long purple hair. Their red and blue eyes reflect the light of the candle illuminating the bathroom, the light also reflects off their porcelain colored skin causing it to shimmer slightly. They have heterochromia, the condition where their eyes are two different colors. Their right eye is a icey blue whereas their left eye is a fiery red. They were born with this trait and found it hard to live life with it. Which is why their eyes are usually hidden unless they're home or around someone they trust.
Cloak groans as they hear loud crashing coming from their kitchen. Figuring it was Xena attempting to make breakfast they yell, "Xena!!! Stop it with the racket!" They roll over and check the clock, it read four am.
Xena grumbles from next to them. "That ain't me ya rude-"
Cloak then shoots up from the bed. "Xena, go see who it is. I have a feeling it's your friends from last night."
Xena shoots up and out of bed then runs out of the room, squealing with happiness. "Hi!!!" She yells, tackling Vincentius who was trying, and failing, to make breakfast.
Cloak groans. "I'll be there in a minute." They get up out of bed and walk towards the door, shutting it quietly so they can get dressed. They walk over towards their closet, grabbing their usual outfit. It consists of a black and white striped shirt with lace at the top, grey jeans, and a silver necklace with a green gem for the charm. After getting dressed they head into their bathroom and put in a pair of colored contacts which were a dark chocolate brown. They had many different colors but for their day job they used those. They also grabbed a pair of glasses from a shelf, they were normal looking glasses except they didn't help with eyesight.
They exit the bathroom then their bedroom. "I take it breaking and entering is a hobby of yours pinky?" Cloak asks as they walked down the hallway.
Vincentius growls. "I have a name!! Use it!!!" He pauses. "Speaking of names…. What's yours?"
Cloak scoffs as they enter their now smoke filled kitchen. Xena, who was now back in bird form, and Kuzo were fanning the smoke outside through a window. "Why does that matter?"
Vincentius chuckles. "Cause! We're gonna be in the same classes together so I wanna know!"
Cloak sighs. "You can call me Riddle, it's my last name but it will do."
Vincentius laughs as he shoves a fist into the air victoriously. "Hell yeah! I'm learning more and more about you!"
Cloak, who he now knows as Riddle, rolls their eyes. "Yeah yeah whatever." As the two converse Xena had shifted back into her mostly human form.
Vincentius turns from his space at the stove and gasps. "My goodness!!! Your eyes are so pretty!!!" He runs over and squishes Riddle's cheeks. "And you wear glasses!!!" His voice was excited and high pitched.
Riddle pushes him away as they grumble. "Whatever. This isn't my actual eye color stupid. And I don't wear glasses. I just have an appearance to keep up. Speaking of which, come on we've got work to do."
Kuzo groans. "Awe come onnnnn!!! I don't wanna work!!!" He pouts as he speaks, he obviously didn't seem happy.
Xena laughs softly. "It's the best part of the day! Come on, come on!!!" She snags Kuzo in her grip once more and runs off downstairs.
Vincentius coughs a little, most likely because Xena was squeezing his familiar too hard. "I 'spose I don't mind workin'." He seemed a little annoyed. "Though can you please tell Xena to stop squeezing Kuzo?"
Riddle laughs as they nod. "Will do pinky." Vincentius rolls his eyes and heads downstairs. Riddle sighs as they look at their absolute mess of a kitchen. The backsplash behind the stove was somehow burnt, the bottom of their microwave was charred, and the kitchen smelled of burnt toast. "How does one burn toast this badly!?" They think as they angrily shake their head. "I'll fix it later.." They sigh.
A small smile spreads across their face. "I have a feeling this is what life is gonna be like now." Riddle chuckles, heading off downstairs themself.
Xena had already closed the blinds and had lit the chandelier as well as the candles on the tables. The café wasn't that large as it wasn't really intended for people to eat in. The floors were of checkered tile and the walls a dark wine color. The tables were made of dark brown wood and had intricate carvings on the top and legs. The chairs matched the tables and had dark purple cushions for comfort.
The base of the counter was made of glass and had shelves inside for the pastries they were about to make. Behind the counter was a very large kitchen with multiple different blenders, ovens, coffee machines, and the like. The walls were lined with shelves made of dark oak wood and had different dry and powdered ingredients inside of large jars with chalkboard labels.
Riddle smiles as they walk down the stairs, their black boots barely making any noise. Kuzo was flying around happily and exploring as much as he could. Vincentius was inside the kitchen lighting the oven fire. "I see you've put him to work already, hm?"
Xena nods. "Mhm!"
Riddle chuckles softly. "You and Kuzo may roam around as you like, just don't ruin anything."
Xena nods excitedly and grabs Kuzo by the arm, ready to fly back upstairs however Riddle puts their hand up. "Be gentle. I understand that you're excited but you must be gentle."
Xena nods more. She then gently drags Kuzo back upstairs. Riddle sighs and shakes their head. "She'll never change."
Vincentius chuckles. "Well, I don't see why she needs to. Xena compliments your grumpy butt perfectly."
Riddle rolls their eyes. "Oh hush. I'm not grumpy. I'm just.. not used to being around others."
Vincentius scoffs. "Yeah whatever you say toots."
Riddle huffs then walks into the back, plucking him on the head as they walk past. "Careful. I might decide to toss you into the oven." They growl in a low yet joking tone as they grab their apron off the hook. Riddle puts it on and brushes off a bit of flour from it. "You can grab the spare." Their apron was black with lilacs sewn into it. The name Riddle was sewn into the middle of it in light purple string. The spare apron was a plain white one though it looked like it had never been used.
Vincentius smiles as he looks at their apron. "That apron of yours is quite pretty. I take it you like lilacs?"
Riddle doesn't answer him, acting like they didn't hear as they walked further into the back. "I can tell that you aren't that capable with baking so could you please open the blinds. Oh and flip the sign to open while you're at it." It was ten minutes of five now so the café would be opening shortly.
Vincentius seems confused as he walks over to the front and pulls open the cloth blinds. "I don't get it? You don't even have any goods-" As he turns around the case underneath the counter was filled with different pastries. Croissants, tarts, scones, cupcakes, cookies, basically everything someone would want. Despite what they may taste like they all had a sort of gothic aura. Green and purple sparkles filled the air, giving the space a magical vibe.
"You were saying?" Riddle asks as they wash their hands in the sink, their apron having some more flour and baking powder on it then before.
Vincentius blinks rapidly and shakes his head, jumping back a little as he realizes he's not dreaming. "H- huh-!? How did you-!? This place was just-!?" He exclaims as he looks around wildly.
Riddle giggles quietly, quite enjoying his shocked face. "That's my secret pinky, now care to assist in cleaning things up?" There were tons of bowls, measuring cups, whisks, spoons, and the like covering the counters. "I'll even pay you to wash the dishes." They smirk, balancing a few pieces of gold on their finger which then falls perfectly into the apon pocket.
Vincentius groans and tosses his head back. "Come on! Why dishes!" He exclaims in annoyance as he throws his hands up.
Riddle chuckles. "Last time I checked I was courteous enough to let you stay in my spare flat, therefore you owe me. Now stop complaining, I could not pay you at all."
Vincentius pouts as he walks into the back and rolls up the sleeves of his signature pink hoodie. There's a small smile on his face as he washes the dishes though his eyes shine with annoyance.
Riddle smiles, they enjoy messing with him. They gently lean against the counter as their eyes shine with amusement as Vincentius does the dishes. "I'm so mean." Riddle thinks as they giggle quietly.
The glass door gently opens behind Riddle, causing the bell above to ring. Heels click against the tile floor as the person walks over to the counter. Riddle puts on a charming smile as they turn around to take the person's order. "Hello! Welcome to the skull and bone, how may I help you-"
Riddle gets cut off as the person starts to speak. Her voice bold and commanding, obviously she wasn't here for small talk. Her hair was of a darker color and her eyes as blue as the drink she ordered. "One blue lagoon mocktail and one strawberry tart. Now." She barks.
Riddle sighs. "Of course, right away." They now had a careful air about them like they didn't want to upset her. One thing was for sure though, this woman didn't look like she belonged there.
She had an important air about her which matched her arrogant scowl perfectly. She was wearing a plum colored off the shoulder high split dress with gold heels. The heels were about five inches high and had odd design that Riddle couldn't make out. To match these heels the woman wore a gold necklace with a feather on it.
Riddle keeps an eye on her as they prepare her drink. Something just wasn't right with this woman. Vincentius had gotten the dishes done, no doubt with some magical help, and had walked over to the front to ring her up.
"That'll be-" He pauses to look at the menu board above and the woman scoffs. "Don't know your own prices?" She growls.
Riddle growls back. "That's enough. He's only working here today." Their voice was firm. "I will not have you or anyone else being rude. Take your drink." They spat as they set it on the counter then grabbed her tart, placing it in a to go box. "That's 12 gold coins."
The woman glares daggers down at Riddle then slams the coins on the counter and walks out.
Vincentius glares back as she leaves. "Who even was that!?" He exclaims as if he couldn't believe her behavior.
Riddle shakes their head. "No idea. But she better not come back."
Thankfully the rest of their day had gone off without a hitch. The usual customers had came and went, all the baked goods were gone and the register was full. Riddle smiles as they start counting out the money.
Vincentius chuckles. "So. What are you gonna do now?" He asks as he looks at the clock on the wall it reads five thirty pm.
Riddle splits the money evenly in half and hands Vincentius his half. "I dunno. Just depends. I may stay home or I may not."
Vincentius shakes his head jokingly as he counts his half. "Well, if you've got nothing to do what do you say to more company?"
Riddle raises their eyebrow. "More? Because you and Kuzo aren't enough?"
Vincentius laughs. "Of course we aren't. Besides, she's a cool chick. She'll probably be in the same classes we are actually."
Riddle sighs. "So long as she doesn't know who I am I'm fine with it." They shiver as they faintly feel cold water run along their arms. Riddle turns their attention to the staircase and yells. "Xena!!! Stop playing with the water! It's cold dammit!!"
Vincentius bursts into laughter until he feels the same sensation. "Kuzo!! Not you too!!"
Riddle laughs and shakes their head. "Go get your friend, I'll take care of things here."
Vincentius nods as his laughter dies down. "Alright toots. I'll be back in a bit, don't let Kuzo get hurt."
Riddle chuckles as they nod. "I will." They joke then start to head upstairs. "Don't tell your friend who I am got it?"
Vincentius nods, a slightly mischievous gleam in his eyes. "Will do."
"So help me I will bound you." Riddle growls as they glare at him. He chuckles and nods once more. "I know I know. I promise, she won't know." Riddle nods as they ascend the spiral staircase and disappear into the upper level.
Riddle chuckles lightly as they reach the hallway. "He's certainly something." They think as they walk into their apartment. Riddle sighs as running water can be heard from the bathroom. "Xena! Stop messing with the water! You're the reason the bills are so high!!"
Xena can be heard laughing from the bathroom with Kuzo. "Yeah yeah whatever!!"
Riddle shakes their head in annoyance as they walk through the living room and into the kitchen. "She'll never learn as long a IIIs you keep letting you act like a child." Their step-mother's voice rings through their ears. Riddle shakes their head again. "She doesn't need to." They mutter quietly as they begin to tidy up the burnt kitchen.
Riddle's eyes never leave the blacked countertops as they scrub, relaxing them slightly. They shiver as they feel the sensation of cold water running down their back. "Xena!!" They growl, growing a little irritated. Riddle absolutely hates cold water.
Xena can be heard laughing from the bathroom as Riddle disapprovingly shakes their head. "You're ridiculous!"
Kuzo comes flying out of the bathroom squealing all the way. He crashes into Riddles back causing them to lurch forward and slam their ribs against the marble countertop. "She's tryin' to get me all wet!!!"
Riddle growls slightly under their breath though it quickly forms into a light chuckle. "I'm sure it wouldn't hurt you to get a bath Kuzo."
Kuzo pouts as he hugs Riddle back. "Don't be a meanieeeee!!!"
Riddle rolls their eyes as they gently pat his head. "Oh whatever you silly monkey." Their head shoots up as they hear someone trying to open the café door downstairs. "Kuzo. Go hide in my closet. Tell Xena to do the same. We've got an uninvited guest." Riddle could tell it wasn't Vincentius as even if his friend was a dunce, he would've just used the window.
Kuzo quickly let's her go then flies down the hall, yelling to Xena as he does so.
Riddle sighs. "The last thing I wanna do today is deal with intruders." They murmur angrily as they walk through the hall and downstairs. They act like this is a regular occurrence. "To whoever decided to break into my café, the register's empty."
A dark chuckle can be heard coming from a man in his early thirties who's sitting at a table on the far wall. "Well well. You're not the person I was expecting to see."
Riddle jumps a little as their eyes shoot towards the man. It takes a moment because of the dark but they recognize the man to be Sylas Mimori, a famous heir to a wealthy company. "Pardon but we're closed. So I kindly ask you to leave."
Sylas shakes his head. "I kindly decline. You see, I came here to see someone."
Riddle crosses their arms and shakes their head as they glare daggers at the man. "I could care less about what you're doing here. Now leave before I make you."
Sylas chuckles as he cocks an eyebrow. "You clearly don't know who I am. I am Sy-"
Riddle cuts him off, growing more annoyed by the minute. "Listen. I know who you are and I'm telling you to leave. We aren't in the business of dealing with stupid, stuck-up, rich heirs who don't deserve a lick of what they have."
Sylas stands, that clearly wasn't a good thing to say. "How dare you-!?"
Riddle growls, a fiery look to their eyes. "If you don't leave now I will gladly force you to."
Sylas chuckles. "Listen. I don't have time to deal with short rats like you. I just wanna talk to your boss."
Riddle shakes their head again. "Absolutely not. Even if you were aloud. It would be too bad because who you're looking for isn't here."
Sylas cocks his head slightly, a creepy smile to his face. "Oh? I'm not aloud hm?"
Riddle sighs, getting ready to have to get physical. "Yeah. You aren't. Now leave."
Sylas shakes his head. "Listen little girl. I don't know who you think you are. But I'm not leaving until I see Riddle!!!" He slams his fist into the wall angrily causing a monochrome painting to fall to the floor.
Riddle growls as he does so. "Don't damage the café!!" They shout, their voice growing angrier by the minute. "I told you to leave and I suggest you do before I throw you out myself!!!"
Sylas growls back. "And I told you no! I want to see that damned brat!"
Riddle sighs as they walk up to him, having to look up since he's quite tall. "Listen. I told you no. Besides, Riddle isn't here right now and I will not have you loitering around a closed café at night!!!" Riddle growls as they grab his collar and start to drag him to the door.
Sylas knocks the chair over on purpose as he launches himself out of their reach. "I told you no! Besides, what's a little pip squeak like you gonna do!? You're a café worker for crying out loud! You have no power!"
Vincentius laughs to himself as he spins and skips along the cobblestone streets, to any other he probably seems like a lunatic but he's truly just excited. Bright fluorescent lights glow in the distance, the dancing lights stand out greatly against the dark muted colors of the city streets. Some people can be seen standing close to the lights and they appear to be smoking something. Vincentius smiles a toothy grin as he runs up to the people. "Hey there! Any of ya know where I can find Vernal?"
An older gentleman, probably in his late thirties, looks Vincentius up and down. "Who are you?" He spats, obviously annoyed that his smoke break got ruined. He flicks his cigarette at Vincentius who does not look happy.
Vincentius glares at the man and stomps on the cigarette. "Listen ya punk. I don't know who you think you are but you've got a lot of nerve." He grabs the man by the collar and pulls him close. "Just tell me where Vernal is."
The man scoffs. "What's a pink punk like you gonna do? Last I checked you're outnumbered." He looks to the side where his friends are but they quickly scatter.
Vincentius smirks. "Really? Outnumbered? We're the only ones out here. Now, where is Vernal." His angry tone only grew as he spoke. He gently lifts the man off the ground.
The man rolls his eyes. "I don't know who your talkin' 'bout." His tone was pouty like he was upset his so called friends left him there.
Vincentius rolls his eyes as well then hits the man on the head with his fist. "Loose the pout." His voice was commanding as he continues to speak. "You know who I'm talking about. Vernal. Is she here?" He speaks like he doesn't already know the answer.
As he speaks a small water sprite, no bigger then seven inches flies through the metal door on the other side of the alley which was behind Vincentius. "Hey! Put him down!" His quiet yet very angry voice yells, though it sounds like a squeak. He flies over towards Vincentius and pulls on his sleeve, attempting to pull him away.
Vincentius smiles as he turns his head towards the sprite. "Nen! Hello!" His voice was cheerful and excited now however he hasn't put the man down yet. Instead he gently shakes the man, who doesn't take it very well.
"Hey! He said to put me down!!" He growls and yanks the section of Vincentius' hair which was out of his hood.
Vincentius growls. "That's my hair!" By the look on his face it definitely hurt.
Nen sighs as he shakes his head gently. "Vincentius, put down the bouncer. It's rude."
Vincentius smiles. "Maybe, but he started it. Say, Is Vinny free? I wanna see her. I've got somethin' to ask."
The man growls. "He said to put me down!!!"
Vincentius looks back to him, his eyes glaring daggers. "Shut up."
Nen slaps his hand to his forehead as he floats there. His pale blue hair flows in the wind as he flies in front of Vincentius' eyes. "Put him down then come inside." His brows furrowed as he put his hands on his hips. As Vincentius begins to talk Nen puts one of his finned legs on his lips to shush him. "No back talk Mr! Put him down!"
Vincentius pouts then drops the bouncer right on his tailbone. He narrows his eyes as Nen, waiting for permission to talk. Nen nods and removes his fin from his lips. "Thank you. That thing's slimy by the way!"
Nen scoffs. "Stop complaining." His light purple skin glissens as he flies towards the back door. Vincentius chuckles as he walks towards the door, making sure to step on the man's foot who yells out in pain. "Oopsie!" Vincentius exclaims as he pulls the metal door open and walks inside, Nen following close behind.
Nen could barely be seen amongst the dancing fluorescent lights. His pastel skin and hair could barely be seen, the only thing you could clearly see was his midnight blue eyes. He looks at Vincentius with an annoyed look. "Did you really have to start a scene?"
Vincentius laughs as he shakes his head. "I've got no idea what you're talking about. Anyway, where's Vinny? I wanna take her somewhere."
Nen cocks his eyebrow as they walk, his midnight eyes focused on Vincentius. "Where? I'm not gonna let you take her anywhere dangerous." As he almost runs into a person his body forms into water then back after he's in front of them.
Vincentius smiles innocently. "No where dangerous I promise. Just to a friend's place, they're gonna attend the academy starting this year and I don't want them to be lonely. Besides, all of us are probably gonna be classmates."
Nen seems unsure but agrees anyway. "Alright. But first, what's this friend's name?"
Vincentius chuckles. "Always the worry wart huh? They won't tell me their actual name but their last name is Riddle."
Nen cocks their head. "Riddle? Wasn't that the name of-" He stops as they see his master. He smiles as he flies over to her. "Cerelia! Vincentius is here, he says he wants to take you to a friend's place. But I wanna question him more."
Vincentius chuckles. "Hey Vinny!!" He exclaims as he hugs Cerelia. Vinny is his special nickname for her and her sobriquet is Vernal so he thought it would be cute.
As Cerelia turns the lights dance off her dark raspberry hair more. She was definitely odd looking, she had light grey skin and chocolate eyes which made her hair stand out a lot. "Oh hey!" She turns to Nen, smiling she gives him a scratch on the head which he happily accepts. "So who's this friend?" She questions, looking at Vincentius.
"Their last names Riddle. They own a café down the road a ways, not too far though. I did walk here on foot." He chuckles. "I trust 'em so much that I left Kuzo there!"
Cerelia rolls her eyes. "You leave him everywhere so that's not saying much."
Vincentius shrugs. "Well, they gave me a pretty much free place to crash. All I had to do was help out at the café which was a piece of cake! They even split the coins with me. So please come!" He begs with puppy eyes.
Cerelia laughs and smacks him on the head. "Fine fine!! So long as they've been nice to you!"
Vincentius winces a little but laughs as well. "That's great! We can watch movies and party all night!" He seems to be extremely excited.
Cerelia smiles. "It's been awhile since he's been this excited." She thinks as Nen huffs and disappears. "Well come on then! Let's go!" The club's music continues to blare as they run to the back door and Cerelia slams it open. They run out into the alley then down the cobblestone streets. The café wasn't as close as Vincentius made it seem. He can walk a lot further than most so he has a hard time judging things like that.
Cerelia seems extremely excited, almost like she doesn't have many friends but that should be virtually impossible as she's usually always surrounded by people but you never know. Vincentius laughs as he looks over and sees how excited she is. Cerelia stops running suddenly as her stomach growls. She bursts into laughter then looks at Vincentius. "Sorry bud but I gotta grab a snack, I'm starving!!!" She groans as she pulls on his arm.
Vincentius laughs as she drags him towards a nearby shop. It wasn't abormal for the duo to go there as the food was delicious and the prices were cheap. "Alright alright. Fine we can grab a quick bite, but only a quick one! Riddle won't like it if we come back too late."
Cerelia chuckles lightly and nods. "Alright! I'm fine with that! I just need food!" She groans, dragging out the word food to be dramatic. "You're so slow!" She yells at him as she shoves him through the door.
The owner of the shop chuckles at the two. "Well, you're both as energetic as always." The color palette of the shop was oddly similar to Riddle's; however Vincentius didn't seem to care, maybe it's just that he likes the gothic style aura. "Yeah. This one needs food." He grumbles as he points over to Cerelia.
The owner chuckles. "Alright, I'll get y'all something." The shop was small and didn't sell much. It had some options but not nearly as many as Riddle's. It had churros, tarts, funnel cakes, typical festival food really.
The owner was a taller woman appearing to be in her late twenties. Her look always confused Vincentius as she had a glittering light grey hue to her skin, her hair was dark brown and gorgeous ocean blue eyes with long nails to match. He had never met someone so odd yet normal looking in his life. She comes out of the kitchen just in time to hear Vincentius brag about Riddle's pastries.
"Riddle definitely has the best tarts ever!!! They're so dark looking yet they're sweet as honey!!" He exclaims, a joyful look on his face.
The owner gently cocks her head as she brings their funnel cake, with extra powdered sugar, over and places it in front of them. "Riddle? Is that their first name or last?" She questions, a sweet smile on her face.
Vincentius looks up as he stuffs his face. He shakes his head and swallows hard. "Uh. They said it was their last, but knowing Riddle it's probably their first and they just didn't want me to know." He shrugs. "Why the sudden interest? I didn't peg you as the type to care about others?"
The owner laughs and shakes her head. "I was just curious is all, there's a lot of people with odd last names around here.." Her voice trails off like she's deep in thought however she quickly snaps out of it. "Well. Tell your friend I said hi will you? Any friend of yours is a friend of mine!" She smiles cheerfully then heads into the back once more.
Cerelia cocks her head, her mouth stuffed as well. She swallows then starts to speak, "That was weird? Why would she say that?"
Vincentius shrugs. "Eh. You know her. She's a weird one but friendly enough." He starts digging into the funnel cake again.
Cerelia laughs then shakes her head. "I can't help but think she wasn't just being friendly." She thinks as she chows down as well.
The owner glanced back at them from the back for a moment, a smile still plastered on her face. "Such energetic people!" She thinks then goes back to her work.
Cerelia smirks evily as she gets a devious idea. As she finishes her half of the funnel cake she dips her hand into the left over powdered sugar then slap Vincentius across the face. As she laughs Vincentius does the exact same to her.
They both continue to laugh and cover each other in sugar as the owner comes back out. She sighs and shakes her head. "I swear, everytime you come in here you always make more work for me!" She chuckles as she grabs a paper towel and wets it.
Vincentius laughs. "Sorry owner lady!!" He really wasn't sorry. The owner giggles softly. "You can call me Lixie. Enough with the owner lady bull!" She laughs as she playfully hits him with the wet towel. Vincentius laughs and nods. "Alright Lixie!! Thanks for the snack!!" He grabs Cerelia by the arm then pulls her out of the store.
As they run down the cobblestone street while Lixie watches them. "Those two." She shakes her head gently as she closes the blinds. The whites of her eyes turn to black just as Cerelia looks back to wave. It causes her to stop dead in her tracks which then causes her to fall as Vincentius was still dragging her.
Cerelia laughs softly and shakes her head. "Sorry 'bout that. I thought I saw something weird is all."
Vincentius laughs. "Look around. This town is full of weird shit. Now come on!!"
Cerelia clicks her tongue as Vincentius pulls her back up. "Always so impatient!!" She playfully hits him on the head and starts running once more. She can't help but wonder if what she saw was actually real or just a trick of the light. "Probably just a trick or the light.. not many beings have blacked out eyes anymore." She thinks as she turns back to look. The blinds of the place we're fully closed and it had a dangerous aura now, like the building was warning them not to come back.
Cerelia decides to shrug it off as she looks to Vincentius. "Where exactly are we going!?" She yells as they continue to run. Vincentius laughs and responds, "You'll know when we get there!!"
Cerelia pouts playfully as she gives him puppy eyes. "Pleaseeeee." She begs, dragging out the word. "Pretty please Titi boo!"
Vincentius rolls his eyes. "Don't call me that!! That's as bad if not worse then what Riddle calls me!!"
Cerelia cocks her head curiously. "Oh. And what would that be?"
Vincentius pouts as he murmurs out, "P- pinky-"
Cerelia bursts out laughing, having to pause her running to do so. "P- pinky-!?" She repeats back, still laughing hysterically.
Vincentius throws his arms down and pouts. "Stop!!!" He laughs a little, finding some amusement in the nickname. He drags her into a playful choke hold and starts to give her a noogie. "That's what you get for laughin'!" He laughs heartily.
Cerelia continues to laugh as she tries to break free. "St- stop it!!" She laughs as she struggles. "C- come on Titi boo!!!"
Vincentius huffs and does it harder. "Nope!!" He laughs as he finally decides to let her go so they could get moving. "Now hurry up!! And stop stalling!!" He huffs as he pushes her forehead with his finger and starts running again.
Cerelia laughs as she begins to run once more. Nen appears next to her, surprisingly keeping pace. "I don't know about this Cerelia. I've got a bad feeling." He glares at Vincentius who was far ahead already.
Cerelia laughs and shakes her head. "Come on Nen, would Titi boo ever lead us wrong?"
Nen shakes his head. "Yes! He would! And you know that!" He sighs. "You're too careless sometimes. What if they-"
Cerelia huffs. "Don't worry about that! Besides, no one knows anyway!! I'm too good!!"
Nen slaps his hand to his forehead. "Why did you have to be my master." He groans as he continues to keep pace with her.
Cerelia giggles quietly. "Oh come on. You know you love me!" She scratches his head gently.
Nen rolls his eyes. "Only sometimes! When you're not being careless!!" He crosses his arms in frustration. "Sometimes, think before you jump. Please."
Cerelia nods. "Sometimes!!!" She snickers, knowing how much being sassy annoys Nen. She knows he means well but sometimes his nagging can be annoying so she likes to mess with him.
Nen huffs as he moves to fly in front of her. "I'm just saying! Don't you think you've gotten yourself into enough dangerous situations!!"
Cerelia giggles. "Nope!! Not at all!!!"
Nen glares at her, his arms crossed still. "Why are you like this? You know you have to be careful!!!"
Cerelia shakes her head. "Nen, life isn't fun when you're constantly living it carefully. I promise to be careful when it's absolutely necessary. But until then, I'll be just as careless as ever!!!" She laughs as she catches up to Vincentius.
Nen sighs as he flies behind her. He looks around cautiously, like he isn't sure what he should be doing. "I don't know what but something just isn't right about this.." He may seem overly cautious but he's really just trying to protect Cerelia. It is his job after all.
Vincentius chuckles. "He's being a worry wart again I hear?"
Cerelia nods. "Yeah. But that's just how he is. He just wants to fulfill his job to the fullest ya know?"
Vincentius nods in agreement. "Yeah I get it. Must be a little annoying though right? To have someone worrying about you constantly?"
Cerelia smiles as she nods. "Sometimes yeah but he really does mean well. He just doesn't wanna see me hurt."
Vincentius chuckles. "Unlike my Kuzo. He always laughs in my face when I get hurt even though he feels it too!"
Cerelia laughs softly. "Yeah. That's Kuzo for you. He's really just a playful thing."
Vincentius smiles. "Yeah! We're like two peas in a pod!" He stops as he suddenly feels this wave of fear wash over him. "That's odd?.." He seems confused.
Cerelia stops a few feet in front of him. "What? Something wrong?"
Vincentius nods. "Yeah.. Kuzo's scared?"
Cerelia laughs and shakes her head. "That hard headed monkey? Scared? I don't believe it!!"
Vincentius nods. "I wouldn't either but I'm feeling it myself. I feel like something's wrong. Kuzo doesn't get scared easily. I mean, he lasted through a full forty eight hour hour movie marathon for crying out loud!!"
Cerelia laughs as she remembers how scared shitless Nen was during that marathon. "Yeah. Maybe that's it! They could just be watching a horror movie!" She's definitely an optimist.
Vincentius shakes his head. "Could be, but I highly doubt it. Something has to be seriously wrong for him to be scared even a little. Let alone this much." He shivers as he feels the sensation of feathers brushing over his arms and chest. "Well.. Riddle's shade is with him. So that's good. But we seriously should get moving again. I hate to say it but I think Nen was right."
Cerelia chuckles as Nen comes flying between them. "See I told you so!!!" He squeaks out angrily. "Now move it!!"
Vincentius chuckles a little as they all start moving again. He had no idea what awaited them once they arrived but he knew it couldn't be good.
