I woke up looking at the blood stained ceiling wondering why I still did anymore, it is almost year 5 of the zombie apocalypse and I'm getting older I'm only 25 but it doesn't feel like it. I wish I could go back to my job as a Marine Biologist, I was only 18 when I started a position, the apocalypse started when I was only 20, I was just a kid, and now it is just a dream and this is my reality. All the screams, blood, hiding, zombies, this all seems fake. If you told me 5 years ago that I would be in these circumstances I wouldn't believe you, no one in there right mind would.

I need to wake up Nathan, he is my closest friend, we have stuck together since the apocalypse started. We were in college together, he studied to be an engineer. He is a bit older than me, I graduated high school early, he is 29 now, we met when I was 14 and he was 18 we were actually dorm mates. We both had good jobs but now that is all gone.

"NATHAN," I called out his name, he came running up to me. "Mira! What's wrong is your wound ok?" He asked with much worry in his voice. "Yeah I'm fine are you ok?" I replied looking at him from the mat I was sleeping on. "I know the zombies are half-deaf but did you really have to yell," he said sighing in relief, as he grabbed his chest and rested his head on the door frame. I snickered to myself, "Why, were you worried they would taste me yelling?" I then busted out laughing throwing myself back kicking my legs, he looked at me with a smile, "Come on we have to get going," he said while walking out of the doorway.

I jumped out of bed and grabbed my backpack, "Did we run out of food again?" He looked at me grabbing his bag from the counter, "yeah, already. You think you can do it with your wound." As he peered down at my side abdominal area that I was holding. I looked at him with confidence, "of course I can, who do you think I am. I got this." He sighed and looked at me, "never the one to give up, come on let's go." He then turned around and walked out of what was left of a door.

I didn't think the wound was that bad, I landed on a broken shard of glass, it was near my lung but it didn't puncture anything. I pulled up my shirt and goodness it looked infected, to say the least. I grabbed some tissue that I had and pressed it against the wound, I winced in pain and looked to see if Nathan noticed. Thank God he didn't, I pressed on the wound more and it did not look pretty, a bunch of puss came out and it smelled horrible. After I got all the puss out I splashed some peroxide on it, it burned. I tried to keep myself from yelping from the pain, I put my hand over my mouth and backed up against the wall. My breath shaking as I bandaged it up, after I finished wrapping up the wound, I pulled my shirt back down and ran out the room catching up to Nathan.

"Dang, what took you so long?" He asked jokingly, as I slowed down as I came up next to him. I replied out of breath, "It doesn't take that long to look better than you," I bumped into his shoulder and ran into one of the big houses down the road from the one we were in. "This is a challenge," he said running after me. I thought I lost him hiding in one of the rooms, but someone came from behind me, grabbed my waist and lifted me up in the air. I started kicking my legs, "You thought you lost me," Nathan said throwing me on the bed in the room and tickling me. "I got you now," he said tickling me. "Hahahaha, stop, stop, hahaha, stop it, hahaha," I was gasping for breaths, "my wound." I took my legs and sliped them underneath him and flipped him over my head. "Wow," he said looking at me and started giggling. "What's so funny," I replied back looking at him. "Your face, you're so mad at me," he replied busting out laughing. I turned over in the bed and started tickling him, "Oh come on." He said as he started laughing more, "Stop, Stop, I won't do it again, hahaha, I promise, I promise." I stopped tickling him and started laughing at him, his cheeks were so red and flushed it was so cute. "Oh so you get to laugh at me," he said.

I rolled over on the bed and sighed, Nathan rolled over to me and put his arm over my stomach. " Look at us adults acting like kids," Nathan said hugging me, "I'm so tired, can you sing like you always used to do, when we were in college together? Please?" I looked at Nathan brushing his hair out of his face, with a smile on my face. "I can, if you want me to," I replied and he nodded, laying his head next to me.

I started singing, "I never saw the woooorld as you did, I never knew what struggles that life had in store. But we always had eachother, always one and another..." He's already asleep, I laid my head on his chest, I smiled to myself and closed my eyes. Drifting off, wishing we could stay like this forever. I threw my arm over him pulling him into a tighter hug, as we slept with one another, drifting into sweet slumber.
