CHAPTER 1: FREE EVENING
“Young man, are you sure you want to play this game? It’s not an easy one.” The coach asked a young man who had just arrived.
“Yeah… and call me Yu.” To show how serious he was, he took of his pair of shoes and put on the sports shoe. What was this hard game?...
It was a game the first class idle youths of West City came up with though it wasn’t popular. One had to run over a raised field and pick up a ball, then run down the raised grounds, reach the bottom, jump up to hit the highest pole in the field. The winner was determined considering his speed in running up to pick the ball and his ability to hit the higher pole. All the players a certain amount and the first three will take the money according to their rank. Of course the winner took more than the rest.
Today, a young man who looked soft and pampered walked into the fields and for the first time the team had a new player. He came in a luxurious car, but it would have made more sense if he came with guards since it was normal for the rich kids to have guards and their own drivers. But he came driving on his own making the team confused.
“You don’t look like someone who can even jump!” Willow said looking down on the young man.
“What if I break the record?” Yuvan asked grinning.
“Can you?” the captain sneered. “If you do, you can take all the money and I will call you brother.” How could he win? Not the even Bern, the city bully managed to hit the highest poll, who does this fragile man think he is?
“Fine… I don’t need money but for the sake of respect, you’ll call me brother. That’s a deal!” Yuvan straightened and stood ready to start.
“Mr. Yu, don’t overestimate yourself. This isn’t an easy thing. Do you know how many people failed? Most managed to reach the third pole, no one got to the fifth, leave alone the tenth!” the captain said.
“And don’t underestimate me!” Yuvan said. “Can we start?”
Everyone looked at each other, laughed and made a high five. They were sure from his looks, he wasn’t used to any hard life. But this rich spoilt kids, they were bullies. It already made a difference between them.
The captain blew a whistle and Yuvan ran in a normal speed, a buy slower up the raised ground, took time to grab the ball and slide down. In him, the team had already seen a failure because he wasted precious three minutes. So, if he had to hit the target, even the first pole in time, he had two minutes which was close to impossible. So what if he had to hit the third pole? Well, he can’t do that… time isn’t on his side.
But the next moment, Yuvan shot into the sky like a god at a speed that was blinding to the eye, and rolled into the air. The team all gasped, even the captain dropped his whistle. They only saw a dot moving. With his spread, they couldn’t see his full body.
He didn’t hit the third pole, he directly smashed the tenth pole which crushed down as he descended from the other side. The team took time to react.
First, no one has ever gotten even to the fifth pole, secondly, he used less than a minute to do the impossible, third, was that speed human? Fourth, how can one crush such heavy poles in one blow?
Was he even breathing?
“How did I do it? Did I break the records?” Yuvan shocked everyone again by walking over unharmed.
“Mr. Yu… are you fine? I mean, are you hurt?” the captain rubbed his eyes in case they were playing poker at him.
“Come on Captain. Am fine. Now, can you call me brother?” Yuvan asked with a smile.
“I don’t believe in miracles. You’ll redo that just to be sure I wasn’t dreaming.” The captain said.
Yuvan didn’t bargain, he took the ball and got ready for a second round. Immediately the whistle was blown, the guys were given another shock. He went up the field in less than a second, picked the ball and came down, shot up in a blinding speed and smashed pole number nine, then stabilized in the air and came down.
Less than a second!
“Jesus Christ of Nazareth!” Willow gasped.
“Are you guys sure if we tell Bern there is a new overall lord in this game, he will believe it?” Dave asked walking towards Yuvan. “I guess you’re not a normal being.”
“Maybe I am, maybe am not.” Yuvan said looking at the Captain meaningfully. The captain bowed his head at him.
“Brother!”
“captain!” the crowd of rich kids roared. “You can’t do that. You can’t bow to a stranger! You amongst you knows him?” the crowd was silent. “You see?”
“I don’t need you to tell me what to do.” The captain said. “Mr. Yu, can you teach me how you did it?”
“There is not enough time left in my life but an sure I will come back for you.” Yuvan started walking away.
The captain's face changed because he knew bowing to a stranger was similar to going against the rest and if Yuvan left him here, he would be bullied.
“Just like that?” Dave ran after Yuvan. “You broke two of our poles. How do you go without paying for the damages?” he asked.
“Didn’t I win? Take the money and repair it.” Yuvan replied and directly walked to his car.
“Who is this arrogant guy?”
“Captain, are you fit to be our Captain?” Willow asked. “I hereby appoint myself as the new Captain! Willow raised his hands and the crowd roared.
CHAPTER 2: GOING WILD
Nova got off the last scene and walked down the stairs of the theatre room with a frowned face. Everyone downstairs welcomed her with a smile.
“Wow!” The producer said. “The success of this whole movie was because of your efforts Nova. The school owes you gratitude!”
She nodded and went out of the building with a forced smile. Quincy followed her because she knew what her pain was.
“Baby girl!” She caught up with her. “There is a party I’ll invite you to get off your stress!”
“Good idea.” Nova nodded. The two went over to change.
After an hour, they arrived at a club but there was a queue. Nova frowned as she stood on the line. Quincy came after silently. The queue was long and it was getting so boring. Nova stepped hard on the floor her heels made a kissing sound. She felt jealous.
“Fine if you wanted to come and kill me here!” she said sadly. Quincy didn’t say anything.
“Hey!” Patricia patted her. “Am jealous of how great you are. Everyone is hailing you back in the school. Am sure you already got a ticket to join the film immediately after school. You won’t have to hustle so much!”
“Whatever!” Nova said differently. A sports car stopped and few men opened the door. A medium height guy walked out and moved to the front of the line just when it was her turn to enter.
“What does he think he is? Am fucking tired standing here already!” Nova went wild suddenly while taking steps forward.
“What?” Quincy was shocked. “Is this the best way people deal with heart breaks? Causing a fuss?”
But she didn’t listen. She went ahead and tapped on the tall well-built man. He turned and looked at her with distant black eyes. He raised his thick eyebrows.
“How may I help you miss?” he asked almost politely but more sexily. Nova bit her lower lip and tightened the coat around her.
“Mr, you didn’t see the queue right? We’ve been standing out here for almost an hour and I won’t tolerate you just jumping to the front. Didn’t you see us?” she retorted.
The man just looked at her calmly. Then he innocently licked his lower pink lip and made her to swallow hard. He just didn’t see her struggling. Quincy came to pull her away but she didn’t leave.
“Usher, unless you’re out of your mind, you won’t attend to him first!” she said. The usher looked at her shocked. The men who came with the man came and surrounded her but the man signalled them to stop. Quincy spoke first. “Sir, am sorry she’s mentally unstable right now.”
“Am mentally stable!” Nova pushed her away.
“Listen to me, there are many ways to nurse a heartbreak than to defend big figures ok?” Quincy forced Nova away while the man still watched. In fact, he stepped aside and let others enter.
“So what if am nursing a heartbreak? Are you comfortable with someone just walking ahead?” She asked and then sighed.
“I'll pay for her ticket!” the man said and instantly paid. Nova didn’t see that as a big deal. She thought he was simply making up for being so walking ahead of others. After paying for Nova and her two friends, he waited for them to enter before he entered.
“You’re such an outstanding being lol!” Patricia said. Nova walked to a free stool and sat around the empty table. Although she had never drank, she was going to drink herself stupid to get the depression out of her mind. It had been three weeks and she hadn’t gotten over the fact that her previous relationship just ended. Even though they had never gotten intimate, she had given that relationship her best.
“One more glass please!” Nova hit the glass on the table. Quincy filled it.
“To more happiness!” Patricia shouted before clicking the glasses. On the dance floor, everyone enjoyed.
“Do you know what you just did?” Quincy asked Nova who didn’t seem to care. “That is the great heir of the Ranvier family, Yuvan. But you just dared talk right in his face? Just one command and you’re dead!”
“Fine! Whatever!” Nova gulped down the glass of wine and a tear slipped from her eyes. “I’ll apologize and let you be happy!”
“It’s not about me being happy, it’s about you being safe. Even after Robin broke your heart, you have to live on. You can’t mess around with everyone!” Quincy was being overprotective as she always was. “I don’t like it when you go wild for him...”
“Enough!” Nova became mas again and slammed the glass on the table so hard it cracked. “Fine... I'll get over the breakup thing today. It was a life full of happiness...” she suddenly became emotional. “He pretended to love me the way I am, a perfect theatre student! He praised me for that first series we produced during my first year in the university. I wish I could have known men are all scam!” she drank another glass and waves her hand in the air. “I must get over this. It’s killing me slowly!”
She walked over to the dance floor. A man who had been watching her for a distance moved to the dance floor also. One stranger wanted to pull her to himself but Yuvan came in between them and pulled her. She didn’t care much, she started dancing. With this man, she felt herself get extremely happy.
Quincy and Patricia closed their mouth ins shock. “She can really risk everything! Yuvan isn’t just anyone, he the heir of the Ranvier family.” Quincy said.
“His family owns the car company in the country, controls the source of oil and I also heard that recently I heard they control the diamond from the south.” Patricia said.
“Talk less of owning casinos” Quincy added.
“Umm..” Nova started. “Am sorry about what I did earlier.” She fly his face with the back of her hand. “I know it's you, Yuvan.”
“No... Am the one who is supposed to be sorry.” He said sincerely rely.
“No... I am. Am just a nobody trying to make a name for myself in this world.” She smiled bitterly. “I was too confused to provoke you. I know I have no power to stand against you, or against anyone else.” She said.
