The Phoenix Empress

Chapter 1

It was an auspicious day for the palace as one of the Imperial Noble Consorts have given birth to a prince.

It was a starry night sky that the Emperor and Empress was heading to the consort's palace when suddenly the sky turned dark and the stars disappeared, thunder crashed. And after an envoy of fiery chariots descended from the sky. The head of the chariot was a beautiful woman, a beauty that no human soul has ever seen. Her expression was as gentle as the sea breeze. Her clothes and jewelry were of elaborate design. It was clear that the Heavenly Mother herself descended from the Great Heaven.

But one thing that peeked the curious of the Emperor and the Empress was she was holding a small bundle of golden fabric in her arms.

When the chariots landed in front of them, the surrounding was enveloped in a thick fog except for the place where they were standing.

The humans quickly kowtowed in front of the Heavenly Mother.

"We pay respect to the Heavenly Mother," the Emperor and Empress said.

"Rise, my children. I descended from the heaven to grant your empire a beautiful blessing that the Heavenly Emperor himself gave," the woman said as she showed the sleeping beauty in her arms.

"She is the daughter of the heavens. She was born from the ashes of a phoenix and from the blood of the Heavenly Emperor. She will one day bring greatness to your country. So, raise her well," the woman added as she handed the baby to the kind Empress.

"We thank you for your generosity, heavenly mother," the Empress bowed as she received the small bundle of blessing.

"My time with the mortals is almost done. I bid you farewell," the woman said as she boarded her chariot together with her angelic guards.

"We bid farewell to heavenly mother," the Emperor and the Empress.

When they peeked inside the small bundle of fabric, a beautiful, red-haired princess was sleeping peacefully. Her skin was as white as the snow.

The Empress and the Emperor were overjoyed as they were personally blessed by the heavenly mother, however, the Empress realized that raising the holy child inside the palace was very dangerous. Many would plot against the child or maybe even kill her.

She took a glance at her husband that was also thinking the same thing.

"We will need to discuss this in a closed room," he said as head for the Empress's palace.

"Tell Imperial Noble Consort Ruan that I have visited first the sick Empress. I will visit her and the prince tomorrow morning," he ordered to his eunuch on which carried it out quickly.

"What should we name her?" she asked as she gently danced the baby.

"Since the heavenly mother has delivered her to us in the light of the moon, we will name her Yueliang," he said as he gently stroked the baby's head.

"I know someone who can take care of her. He is one of your trusted generals, General Wen," she said. " He only has a son and is stationed at the Liang Province. He could take care of her. And since he is one of the Noble clans, this child will have a chance to marry one of the prince."

"Yes, that would be it. Xie Bai! Prepare a small carriage, you will deliver Yueliang to her new parents tonight. Make sure no one sees you," the Emperor ordered his trusted guard as he wrote a short letter, informing the general of his plan and what happened.

"Right away, my Lord," the servant said as he went out to prepare what the Emperor has said.

"Court Lady Lan, escort Xie Bai to the Liang Province. Both of you will travel without stopping. You will take care of the child until you arrive. Protect her at all costs," the Empress said as she wrapped a golden blanket around the baby to keep her warm throughout the rough journey.

She gave her the jade phoenix pendant to the baby.

After a few more goodbyes from the Emperor and Empress, the 2 servants quickly left in hurry.

After a night of travelling, Xie Bai and Lady Lan arrived at the General Wen's house in which they were welcomed warmly.

"My Lord, the Emperor has something for you," Xie Bai said as he presented him the letter.

"Is that the child?" the General asked, pertaining to the crying baby that the court lady was carrying.

"Yes, my Lord," Xie Bai said as he signalled for the court lady to give it to the General's wife.

Wen Ping gasped at the sight of the beautiful baby. When the court lady handed it to her, the baby automatically stopped crying.

"It seems that this holy child likes my wife," the general laughed. "Tell the Emperor and the Empress not to worry about her, we will take care of her like she is our own."

"Then, we will take our leave, my Lord. A lot of people would be suspicious of both of us are gone for too long," Xie Bai said as he bowed to the general.

"Alright, take care on your journey," the general said as he looked at the child who was already cooing in his wife's arms.

Chapter 2

12 years later ...

"Xuefeng! Have you seen your little sister?" Wen Ping asked her son who was practicing his sword.

Yueliang became the most doted daughter of the Wen family, taking the Wen's family's last name. Hearing that her mother was searching for her, she closed her book and stood up.

"Mother, is there something wrong?" she asked, emerging from the garden.

"The Emperor's personal bodyguard is sent to fetch you. Hurry and get dressed!" the first wife of the Wen family, Madam Wen Ping.

"My lady, the Empress has also sent a gift," Xie Bai said as he presented a small, long box to Yueliang.

"I will thank the Empress personally for this gift," she bowed as she received the small box. "But, can my brother come along and escort me?"

Xie Bai thought for a moment. There is no way that the Emperor and Empress could decline this small request.

"Yes, my lady," Xie Bai smiled as he watched the young lady giggle.

"Then, I will change. Please, wait here for a moment," Yueliang said as she left for her room.

"Are the Emperor and Empress doing well?" Wen Ping asked Xie Bai.

"Hmm, yes. They are looking forward to seeing the young miss again," he replied.

Wen Ping remembered how the young lady came to them, she was actually sent away from the palace because she was a deity.

"Xuefeng, go prepare as well, you will escort your little sister to the summer palace," Wen Ping said as he turned to leave.

"I shall take my leave, as other matters also needs my attention," she said.

"It's okay, my lady," Xie Bai smiled.

However, the 2nd wife of the Wen Family was watching. She had always loathed Yueliang as she robbed the affection of General Wen's from her own daughter, the supposed to be 1st lady of the family. She had no idea how Yueliang got into the family.

As soon as Xie Bai was alone to wait for the 1st lady, she quickly approached him.

"Greetings to the Emperor's trusted bodyguard," she smiled.

"Greetings, my lady. But who are you?" he asked.

She forced herself to smile after hearing him ask.

"I am the General's second wife, Wen Qing," she greeted. "I see that lady Yueliang is going to visit the Emperor and Empress?"

Xie Bai only smiled. He was warned by the General never to speak with the 2nd wife.

"My daughter and lady Yueliang are very close. Will it be possible if she comes with her?" Wen Qing asked.

Xie Bai didn't know how to respond. As he was about to say yes, the General himself arrived.

"Greetings to the great General Wen Hu," Xie Bai and Wen Qing greeted as they bowed.

"Has the Emperor and Empress asked for my daughter again?" he asked.

"Yes, she is currently changing, my Lord," Xie Bai said.

"That's good. Let her take her elder brother with her," the general smiled.

"My Lord, if you allow it, I'd like Wen Fang to also accompany Lady Yueliang to greet the Emperor and the Empress," she suggested.

The General looked at her.

"Feng is still grounded from what she did to her only sister. She almost killed Yueliang! She will stay in her room until I say so," he said before turning towards Lady Yueliang's who arrived, dress in the most elaborate dress that the Empress had sent the night before, wearing a beaded, jade hairpin that the Empress had sent.

The way Lady Yueliang dressed sparked Lady Qing's jealousy.

"Fang had never worn this kind of clothes!" Lady Qing angrily said. She couldn't contain her jealousy and anger anymore.

"This is not the place for you to express your jealousy, Lady Qing," Lady Ping said who was just behind Yueliang.

Lady Yue remained silent. She knew that Lady Qing and Lady Feng never liked her and expressed this worry to her father.

"My apologies, Lady Ping," Lady Qing said as she bowed to the first wife.

"Mother, Father, why don't you let Lady Feng accompany me to see his majesties?" Yueliang gently smiled.

Lady Feng suddenly jumped out from nowhere already dressed in her best clothes.

"Will you let me, father?" she asked.

The General sighed as it was already Yueliang who asked.

"Fine. Behave yourself and never embarrass Yueliang.

"Thank you for your generosity, father," Feng smiled.

'This is a great opportunity for me to marry a prince! I certainly will marry the crown prince!' Feng thought.

As they set out, Feng chose to ride on a more elaborate carriage than ride on the same carriage as Yue.

"Are you sure about letting Feng accompany you?" Xuefeng asked who was riding a horse outside her carriage.

Yue looked over her window and smiled at her brother.

"Feng is still our sister, if she wants to accompany then I will let her," she said.

"Have you forgotten how she pushed you at the pond yesterday? You almost got yourself killed if it weren't for me," he said.

"Don't worry, big brother. She will behave, after all, we will be meeting the Emperor and Empress. And besides, you're with me. Nothing bad would happen to me if you're around," she laughed.

"If she ever makes a move that would harm you, I will force her home, okay?" he warned.

"Alright," she smiled as she closed the curtain.

Xuefeng had been traumatized numerous times as Feng had always attempted to harm Yue. He had grown to love Yue so much and treated her like his own sister. She was kind, generous and always had this gentle smile on her face. Unlike his own biological sister, Feng who has always been mean, whether to their other siblings or to the maids. When Yue arrived into their home, Feng hated her so much.

When they arrived at the Summer palace, the Emperor and Empress had an emergency meeting to attend to so they were sent to the pavilion where the Imperial Noble Consort was lounging.

The Noble Consort Yahui was fond of Yue as she was born at the same day as the 8th prince. She was also the Empress's most trusted ally inside the Imperial Harem as both of them never competed for the Emperor's favor.

The moment she saw Yue, she smiled widely. But as her expression quickly turned sour as soon as her eyes fell on the young lady Fang.

"We pay respect to the Kind Imperial Noble Consort Yahui," the two ladies bowed.

"How are you, Yue?" she asked Yueliang as she disregarded the other one.

"I've been well, your highness," Yue smiled.

"Come, sit here with me," she said as she patted the seat beside her.

Feeling out of place, Lady Fang excused herself in which the Noble Consort quickly permitted.

Chapter 3

"Such a bright girl you are! Your parents are blessed to have you," the Noble consort laughed. Before Yue could even respond, a eunuch approached them and whispered something to the noble consort.

Her facial expression changed.

"The Emperor and Empress would like to talk with you in private," the Noble Consort said. "Follow the Eunuch."

Yue stood up and bowed to the consort.

"Then, I shall take my leave, your Grace," she said before leaving.

The Noble Consort then stood up to rest in her palace as she didn't want to be in the same place as Lady Feng.

"Let me escort you to your room, your Grace," Feng said.

"No, I have my maid. I will send someone to send you some snacks," the Consort said as she left. She was only trying to control her temper as Feng was Yue's sister. She didn't want Yue to be mad at her as she wanted Yue to marry her son.

When Yue arrived at the Empress's palace, she bowed and greeted them, including his father and mother who were already there.

"Greetings to Imperial Father Emperor and Imperial Mother Empress. Greetings to father and mother," she said as she bowed.

"Now, now. There is no need to do that. Stand up," the Emperor said.

"My, my. Yue has grown up a lot," the Empress smiled as she scooted over to let Yue sit beside her.

Yue stood up and sat beside the Empress. All her life, Lady Ping had always reminded her the Empress was her 2nd mother as her biological mother was a heavenly deity. The same with her father.

"She has developed her power incredibly, your Majesty," the General boasted.

Yue only smiled in response.

"Are you prepared for tonight? You will be proclaimed as the Heavenly Princess tonight," the Empress said.

"Yes, Mother Empress," she replied.

"When you turn 18, you know that you will choose your husband among the princes," the Emperor said. "Tonight, a big feast will be held to announce your proclamation and the announcement of the competition of the princes for your hand."

"When we return to the capital, I'm afraid you will have to leave your dear Mother and Father and come with us," the Empress said as she gently stroked Yue's hair.

Yue smiled brightly as she turned towards the Empress.

"Don't worry, Mother Empress. I'm not worried at all. My brother and Nanny Lan will be with me, right?" she smiled.

"That is right," the Empress laughed.

Wen Xiufeng, General Wen's eldest son was a master in both sword and pen which was beneficial if he stays beside the young deity.

"Time is short. The General and I still have a morning meeting to attend. And Yue should be resting 'til tonight," the Emperor said as he stood up. "My dear wife, I assume you will take care of the banquet tonight personally, together with Lady Ping."

"Yes, my dear Emperor. Right, Lady Ping? Let our Yue rest for tonight," the Empress said as she stood up also to leave.

"Court Lady Lan will continue to take care of you. Don't worry about anything, my dearest," Lady Ping said as she kissed Yue's forehead.

After the adults left, Lady Lan and Yue were the only ones left inside the Empress's room.

"The Empress prepared a palace for you to stay," Lady Lan said.

Yue quietly stood up and followed her nanny to her new room. A beautiful dress was prepared inside and a lot more beautiful accessories were displayed inside.

"Are you okay?" Lady Lan asked as she noticed the weary look on Yue's face.

"I am not ready to leave Father and Mother yet," she said sadly.

Lady Lan took a deep sigh as she sat beside Yue.

"Your Mother and Father will be very proud of you if you return to the capital with the Emperor and Empress," she explained.

"But, I will miss them," Yue cried.

"Have you forgotten who you are?" Lady Lan asked.

"No. Heavenly Father has always reminded me of who I am every night in my dreams. And soon, I will return to the Great Heavens and stood by him and Heavenly Mother," she said.

Hearing this, it made Lady Lan weep.

"Well, while you are still here, bring honor to your mortal Father and Mother," Lady Lan said as she gently stroked Yue's back. "I will bring you your favorite snacks and your favorite tea."Yue nodded as she wiped her tears away.

After Lady Lan left, she felt she couldn't breathe and decided to take a walk along the Summer Palace's garden. She spotted a beautiful pavilion by the lake. The breeze gently swept across her face as she stood by the Peachtree.

She got her flute from her sleeve and played the Lotus Blossoms. A piece of music that tells her yearning for her unknown past. The breeze that swept across the garden which was warm, went cold as the music field the air. The leaves of the trees gently shook as the breeze blew gently across them.

After the music ended, a man woke up from his nap. It was the young 8th Prince, Li Jiahao, Imperial Noble Consort Yahui's son. He looked around the pavilion, searching for that gloomy music. He looked outside and saw a young girl by the peach tree, holding her golden flute to her chest.

"Hey! That was a piece of sad music," he commented.

"I'm sorry for disturbing you, my Lord. I didn't notice someone was sleeping inside the pavilion," she bowed.

He sneered and jumped over and pointed a sword to her neck.

"Who are you and how did you get in? This is off-limits for commoners," he said. "Are you asking for death?" he yelled.

Scared, she quickly bowed and begged for mercy from the young prince.

"Forgive me, your highness! I did not know," she cried.

As the young prince swung his sword, she closed her eyes waiting for the sword to strike her. But a knife clashed through his sword and he quickly retreated. It was his brother's knife after all.

"Brother!"

"Now, now, is that a way to welcome Father Emperor's precious guest?" the older prince asked.

Seconds later, Xie Bai, Xuefeng and the other princes came rushing in.

"My lady, are you hurt?" Xie Bai asked, making sure that Yue wasn't hurt anywhere.

Yue smiled and shook her head.

"The prince was only shocked to see me here as it is our first time meeting," she said. The other princes couldn't take their eyes off of the red-head lady.

"My lady, you have unusual hair? Were you born like that?" a prince in a golden robe asked.

Yue assumed he was the crown prince as he was the only one dressed in gold.

Lady Lan came rushing as soon as she heard that her lady has been attacked.

"Lady Yue, are you hurt? Is there any part in your body that hurts?" she asked as she looked for wounds on her body. Yue giggled as she saw her nanny's reaction.

"You don't have to worry, His Highness saved my precious sister," Xiufeng smiled.

"I'm alright," she smiled.

"Lady Yue is an important guest of the Emperor and Empress," another prince who had a bronze hair accessory.

Yue turned to Li Jiahao and bowed to him.

"I ask for your highness' forgiveness for trespassing. I did not know this is off-limits for people like me," she said.

"My brother doesn't mean to scare you. He is quite hostile with women," the crown prince said as he patted Jiahao's head.

The Emperor's eunuch approached them.

"The Emperor has summoned all the princes to the East Palace right away. And for Lady Yue, the Emperor asks for you to rest until tonight," the Eunuch said then left.

"We will heed the Emperor's command," Yue bowed and left together with her nanny. Meanwhile, the princes were in awe of her beauty.

"Let's go. Father Emperor will surely punish us again if we came in late," Li Xiuying, the crown prince said.

It was already dusk when Yue was already finished dressing up. She was about to be proclaimed the Heavenly Princess. Her trail of maids was already waiting for her to come out, including her brother.

"Shall we go out now?" Lady Lan asked.

Yue looked at her broken golden flute. It broke earlier when the prince attacked her as she dropped it and accidentally stepped on it.

"Yes," she smiled as she stood up.

The palace was filled with murmurs as everyone was curious as to why the Emperor would hold such a huge feast. Even the princes who were sitting calmly in their seats couldn't help but listen to the ministers who were discussing the event that was going to happen that night. Even the crown prince's mother, 2nd Imperial Noble Consort Ruan was present. It was truly a special event as the crown prince's mother seldom goes out because of her fragile health. Trumpets sounded from outside the palace doors, making everyone inside shut their mouth.

'it's about to start' said everyone's thought.
