The Knocking On The Mirror
the reflection
Joanna woke up from the continuous knocking sound on glass.
she looked over at her window.
She closed her eyes to go back to sleep
She groaned and got out of bed to check out the window
She opened her window and looked out. There was no one down there, neither was anything that could've caused the sound.
She finally looked away from the window and decided to go back to bed. But she stopped.
Joanna
*now that I'm awake, I'll make a trip to the bathroom*
while she was doing her thing, she heard the knocking sound again.
Joanna
we don't have a window in the bathroom...
Joanna
Then where is this sound of knocking on glass coming from?
Joanna
Whatever, I'm probably just hallucinating. I'm tired...
She flushed the toilet and stood in front of the mirror, washing her hands.
She didn't look at her reflection, she just remained focused on washing her hands.
Suddenly, from the corner of her eyes, she noticed some movements behind her.
She immediately turned to see what it was-
She turned back, and her gaze landed on the mirror...
She saw a shadow on the mirror, standing behind her reflection.
But the moment her gaze landed on it, it disappeared
She quickly left the bathroom and closed the door behind her
Then she ran down the dark hallway and into her room, breathless.
Joanna
Am I in some kind of horror movie?
She crawled under her sheets and closed her eyes
Joanna
*Ghosts don't exist. Ghosts don't exist...*
She repeated these words in her head until her mind drifted to sleep...
In her dream, she was standing in front of the mirror in the dimly lit bathroom.
She could not move, nor she could speak, she was just standing still, staring at her reflection.
Her reflection was not alone...
There was someone behind her
Her body was shaking, the room was cold, but there was no window, so there was no wind.
Wasn't this a dream? Then why can she feel the cold...?
The shadow figure came closer
Joanna wanted to move, to get away, but her body remained still, shaking uncontrollably.
The figure finally stopped, but it was close enough to whisper in her ear.
Joanna held her breath, as if she forgot how to breathe.
Joanna was too scared to turn her eyes and look at the figure next to her face.
All she could do was to stare in horror at their reflection
From the corner of her eyes, she couldn't see anyone, even though the figure's reflection was clearly next to her.
But, she could feel its coldness against her skin.
The figure was a girl... probably around the age of 10 to 15
Her skin was as pale as a sheet of paper
Her dark hair was long and resting on her shoulders.
there was dried blood around her lips and on her neck
The white T-shirt that she was wearing was painted red by blood.
The girl leaned in closer to her, and Joanna froze.
From the reflection, Joanna could see the girl's lips moving.
She whispered in a quiet voice:
the girl in the mirror
Get me out
Joanna's eyes widened with fear and the next thing she knew was that she was screaming
it was just a dream, wasn't it?
Doris (mom)
What is it!? What happened?
Doris, Joanna's mother, rushed into her room, startled by her sudden scream.
Joanna was left breathless
she was holding her breath the whole time
Joanna
Ha...n-nothing...*gulp*
Joanna
just a nightmare...
Doris (mom)
Are you alright?
Joanna nodded slowly, still in the daze from the nightmare
Doris (mom)
Now come on and get dressed. You'll be late for school.
Doris (mom)
And also, I've prepared your breakfast. Make sure to eat all of it.
Doris (mom)
I'll take my leave then. Your dad's waiting for me in the car.
Joanna sat on her bed for a few minutes, then she finally got out of bed and got changed.
She ate her breakfast and left for school
Joanna kept looking out the window the whole time, still thinking about the girl in her dream.
She couldn't help but think that she looked familiar
April, her BFF since childhood, whispered to her.
Joanna snapped out of her daydream
April (bff)
You've been zoning out the whole time
Joanna
Oh...it's nothing...
April (bff)
Well I don't believe you
April (bff)
Whatever's on your mind, you're gonna tell me everything!
Joanna didn't mind sharing the nightmare that she had
It can make her feel better. Probably.
April grabbed Joanna's hand and took her to the schoolyard
Joanna told April everything
April (bff)
Honey, that was a scene straight out of horror movie!
Joanna
Yeah, I thought the same thing.
Joanna
you know, what bothers me the most is...
April (bff)
that your house is most likely haunted?
Joanna
That girl looked familiar
April (bff)
Familiar? How? Like some kind of ghost that you killed in your past life, and now it's here to haunt you for life?
Joanna
Remember when I told you that my sister disappeared around the time that I was born?
April (bff)
You're saying that it might've been your sister?
April (bff)
First thing first
April (bff)
Ghosts ain't real
April (bff)
second, your sister just disappeared! It doesn't mean that she's dead, right?
April (bff)
What you experienced last night, was just a dream! That's that!
Joanna
You're probably right...
Joanna
I can remember every detail vividly
Joanna
I could even feel the cold...
April (bff)
Well, some people can remember their dreams with every detail. That's normal.
April (bff)
Don't spend your time worrying about something that's not real
April (bff)
It was just a dream, and now it's over
April (bff)
Now let's go back to class
When school ended, Joanna said goodbye to April and went home.
She went to her mom, who was scrolling through her phone, sitting on a sofa.
Joanna
mom, Where do you keep the old album?
Doris (mom)
Why do you want it?
Joanna
Just wanted to look through some pictures...
Her mom stayed silent. She appeared to be deep in thought.
Joanna
From earth to mom! Joanna speaking!
Doris (mom)
It's in the drawer, under my bed.
Joanna went to her parents' room. She searched the drawer and found the album.
she flipped through the pages carefully
On the last page of the album, there was a picture of her sister when she was 14.
examining her sister's face carefully
she had the same face, the same long dark hair...there was no mistake...
Doris stepped into the room.
Doris sat on the bed, next to Joanna
Doris (mom)
Every single day, I wait for her to return...
Doris (mom)
To knock on the door, and for me to open it and see her face...
Doris (mom)
It's been 16 years...
Doris (mom)
Thanks, honey.
Doris (mom)
I don't know what I would've done without you...
Joanna couldn't possibly tell her mom that she dreamed of her sister's ghost.
If it actually was a ghost...or just a bad dream...
Get Me Out!!!
Later that night, Joanna laid on her bed, with the lights on
She was too afraid to fall asleep
Joanna
I wonder if April is awake
She turned and grabbed her phone and texted April
after a few minutes, her phone rang. she answered it.
April (bff)
Don't you wanna sleep?
Joanna
my mind has the scary ability of being dark and demented.
April (bff)
you're afraid of your dreams?
April (bff)
Is it because of your sister?
April (bff)
I told you that it's nothing
Joanna
It is something actually
Then she switched to face call
she grabbed the picture of her sister and showed it to April
April (bff)
Is that your sister?
Joanna
This is exactly the person I saw in that dream
Joanna
The difference is that her eyes were...white
Joanna
And her face and body were covered in blood
Joanna
I've never been this sure in my life
Joanna
Listen, I don't believe in supernatural things, but that dream was way too real!
Joanna
I think... I think that my sister has been murdered
April (bff)
You're saying that she's been murdered, and now, after 16 years, she's back to asks for your help? To do what, 'get her out'?
April (bff)
Listen, I don't thin-
Joanna
Th-The... There's.... There's someone....
April (bff)
What!? What happened!? JOANNA!!
On the other side of her room, in the mirror, her sister's ghost has been watching her all this time
Standing still, head tilted, her dark hair covering half of her face
suddenly she reached out with her hand towards Joanna, which made her scream again.
Her sister stood still, with her hand reached out.
She tilted her head again.
Joanna pressed herself against the wall as hard as she could
Suddenly, the ghost's eyes widened, and it charged towards Joanna with incredible speed that her eyes couldn't follow
the next thing she knew was that she was now face to face with the ghost
The ghost wrapped her fingers around Joanna's neck and squeezed until her eyes rolled back
The Ghost of her sister, Duana, shouted
As Joanna was about to lose consciousness, the door of her room opened.
Doris (mom)
WHAT HAPPENED!?
Eric (dad)
WHAT IN THE WORLD!?
Both her parents rushed inside her room
Joanna put her hands on her neck, gasping for air.
Doris (mom)
What happened!? Joanna!?
April's voice was shaking
April (bff)
S-Someone was in her room...
Doris (mom)
Did you see their face!?
Joanna
I didn't see their face...
Joanna
They were wearing a mask- *Cough*
Eric (dad)
I'm going after them! They might still be near!
Doris (mom)
It's dangerous! I'll call the police!
Eric (dad)
I'll go search!
She noticed the red marks on her neck
Doris (mom)
Oh, God!!! They tried to strangle you!
Doris felt like she was about to faint
Joanna grabbed her mom before she could fall
Doris (mom)
You're the one I should be asking this question from...
Doris (mom)
Oh my baby...ahhh
Doris wrapped her arms around Joanna, crying helplessly.
Joanna looked over at her phone and saw April's pale face
Joanna shook her head at April
April was too terrified to talk
She saw the ghost that Joanna was talking about...it was crazy, but she saw it with her own two eyes
After 10 minutes, Eric returned.
Eric (dad)
There was no one
Eric (dad)
I searched everywhere
Doris (mom)
We should have called the police!
Doris (mom)
Some bastard tried to kill your daughter, and you don't even want to call the police!?
Eric (dad)
Listen honey, I just don't trust the police...
Eric (dad)
Cause even after 16 years, they haven't been able to find Duana!
Doris felt like crying again
Eric walked up to Doris and wrapped his arms around her
Eric (dad)
It's gonna be okay... I'm here...
He then looked over at Joanna and smiled warmly, and gestured for her to join the hug
After their family hug, Eric checked Joanna for any injuries
Eric (dad)
Just the mark around your neck...
Eric (dad)
I'm afraid it's gonna leave bruises...
Eric (dad)
I think you should stay home tomorrow
Both Joanna and April said at the same time
They were both thinking about the same thing
Eric (dad)
Why not? It's dangerous to go out
April (bff)
Trust me uncle, It's safer for her to go to school
April (bff)
Just... Just trust me
Eric (dad)
Right, you saw the intruder too.
Eric (dad)
Don't you remember anything specific about them?
Joanna
Anyway dad, I'll go to school tomorrow.
Joanna
Yes. It's safer. Don't ask why, just trust me. I feel like they won't come after me when I'm outside.
Joanna
It's not like they can attack me in public
April (bff)
I think it's better if she stays over at my place...
April (bff)
Just to be safe
April (bff)
If the Intruder wanted to come back, he can't find Joanna in her room.
April (bff)
They wouldn't expect her to be at my place
Doris (mom)
She's right, Eric!
Eric (dad)
Isn't it troublesome for you?
Eric (dad)
There's still a chance that they would come to your home
April (bff)
No, I'm sure they won't. It's safe here for the both of us.
Eric (dad)
Alright then. If you say so.
April (bff)
Thanks, uncle!
April (bff)
Actually, she should come right now
April (bff)
* there's still a chance that the ghost would haunt her in her dreams...*
Joanna immediately understood what April was thinking
April (bff)
Because... Because the Intruder has just left, he'll definitely be back tomorrow to stalk her. So, if she moves out now, he wouldn't know where to look for her!
Eric (dad)
That makes senses...
Eric (dad)
Alright. I'll drive Joanna over.
Eric (dad)
Are your parents OK with this?
April (bff)
Yes, they're cool. Don't worry.
Doris (mom)
Thank you so much darling
April (bff)
It's nothing auntie
April (bff)
that's what friends are for
Doris (mom)
Joanna is really lucky to have a friend like you
Both Joanna and April smiled
Both girls hugged each other tightly
April (bff)
I'm so glad that you're okay
April (bff)
I'm sorry that I didn't believe you.
Joanna
If I were you I wouldn't believe me either.
April (bff)
you're still in the mood to crack jokes after that?
