"DOCTOR!" a man shouted thunderously, filling the emergency room at Medistra Hospital. Immediately, nurses approached and saw the man carrying a young man covered in blood.
A nurse quickly pushed a gurney, and the man laid the gentleman down on it.
"Attend to him NOW! HURRY!" he bellowed as if time couldn't be wasted.
Meanwhile, the nurses there were stunned by the condition of the man now lying on the bed. His state was truly critical. Blood was even streaming from his nostrils.
Clearly, he had been in a horrific accident.
"QUICKLY!" the man shouted again, louder this time.
Two on-call doctors had just arrived and immediately examined him. Yet both felt overwhelmed by the case. The patient's condition was on the brink. Only a miracle could keep him alive.
"Sir, we can't handle this, we will assist you to a referral hospital_"
"Idiots! What kind of doctors are you! Instead of trying to save the patient, you suggest a referral hospital! I don't care! Do whatever it takes to save my master!" he yelled even louder. It was understandable why he was so furious; his master was on death's door, yet the doctors didn't move quickly to provide treatment.
The commotion had naturally become the center of everyone's attention.
Security personnel even began to approach to secure the area.
Anna, the head of Medistra Hospital who happened to pass by the emergency room, was startled by the loud voice of the man. Without delay, she went there and witnessed the chaos.
Without asking many questions, Anna stood right beside the man she believed to be the accident victim. His condition was extremely critical.
"Don't just stand there! Start treatment immediately!" the man, named Samuel, an assistant to the man now unconscious on the gurney, Rayden Carter, cried out.
The single accident that had befallen his master wasn't something he could control. Sam could only beg for his master to be quickly treated.
But Anna couldn't do much; she was too old to conduct the surgery herself. And if they did not act quickly, this young man might die.
"Take him to the operating room," said Anna, and at her command, the nurses and doctors there acted immediately, because Anna was the CEO of the hospital, Anna Walker. Having married into the Dude family, she now went by the name Anna Dude.
"Prepare Team 5; they will assist me in the OR."
Hearing this, of course, everyone including the nurses and doctors was shocked. Team 5 consisted of those deemed less competent. How could team 5 handle this? They thought Anna should have selected team 1 or 2 for a serious case like this. That was what everyone was thinking.
However, time was short, and immediately a nurse assembled team 5 to enter the OR.
Each team consisted of a surgeon, an anesthesiologist, a surgical nurse, and an anesthetic nurse.
Anna would act as the surgeon, Disha as the surgical nurse, Helmi as the anesthesiologist, and Dara as the anesthetic nurse.
But once they were in the OR, everything changed.
Instead of Anna, it was Disha who acted as the surgeon. A plain woman who, until then, everyone thought was just a surgical nurse, merely Anna's assistant during operations.
Unknown to all, Disha was in fact Anna's biological daughter, a master surgeon hiding her identity.
Business disputes from the past, unresolved within the Walker family, had forced Disha's parents to hide her. Everyone only knew Disha as a country girl. A plain girl with thick glasses.
In reality, she was the only daughter in the Dude family, Aresha Dude. According to common knowledge, Aresha had passed away.
The accident that wiped out her mother's entire family was actually a sabotage by an enemy. The culprit was still at large. But when Aresha was four years old, a man tried to kill her. He made repeated assassination attempts, forcing Anna and her husband to seclude their child. For years this continued, and now Disha was twenty.
Aresha had to live as someone else, not part of the Dude family.
Yet, she was a girl with genius abilities like her parents. Everyone only knew her as a surgical nurse, but in truth, she was the surgeon.
"My God, Dr. Anna has really gone too far! Why did she choose team 5, she should have picked our team! Team 1," complained Rafaela, a surgical nurse who always wanted the best for her team, and who constantly saw Disha, the plain girl, as a rival.
"Calm down, Raf, I'm sure the surgery will fail," replied Dena, her teammate, an anesthetic assistant.
"You're right, I bet that plain girl will ruin everything."
Both women smirked, looking arrogantly toward the closed surgery room, the red light still on, indicating that the operation was underway.
Inside, Disha was leading the surgery, her hands deftly moving all the instruments. Team 5 thought she was Anna. But before the surgery had begun, Anna and Disha had exchanged ID badges to swap roles.
The case they were facing was the most challenging they had ever encountered.
But still, this was not a problem for Disha.
The operation was ultimately successful after several hours in progress. Yet, the unfortunate man was still not out of critical condition. He remained unconscious, reliant on various machines to sustain his life.
Team 5 felt thoroughly exhausted after managing this procedure, all but Disha. Despite this being the most difficult case Aresha had ever encountered. Nevertheless, Disha managed to complete it with remarkable proficiency.
Once the operation was over, Anna, Disha, and two other colleagues emerged from the surgery room. Anna and Disha walked at the rear, discreetly switching back their business cards to their original state.
No longer trading roles.
"Mom is so proud of you, sweetheart," Anna whispered to her child, not wanting others to overhear. Considering the necessity to keep her child's identity securely concealed. Yet Anna could not veil her immense pride in her only child.
Disha simply nodded slightly, silent. The delicate nature of their relationship was sustained by circumstances, due to the threats to Disha's safety.
Anna also felt a profound sense of guilt for having placed her child in such a situation, forced to live as though not part of either the Dude or Walker families.
But in place of carrying the weight of their family's prominent name, Anna prioritized the safety of her child above all else.
Exiting the operating theatre, they were immediately confronted by Samuel, his gaze filled with hope.
"How is it, doc? How did the surgery go? How is my employer doing?" Samuel inquired impatiently.
Anna then carefully removed her mask before replying.
"The surgery went well; the patient will soon be moved to a recovery room," Anna explained, her authoritative presence undiminished by age. Anna’s gaze always managed to elicit submission from others.
Upon hearing the doctor's update, Samuel exhaled a sigh of relief. Rayden Carter's life was as precious as his own, and he would do anything for the wellbeing of his employer.
News of the successful surgery quickly spread throughout the hospital. The rest of the surgical team heard it as well. Rafaela and Dena, upon catching wind of the news, clicked their tongues in frustration.
Of course the surgery had been a success; it was Doctor Anna at the helm. If it had not been for Anna, Rafaela was certain Team 5 would not have succeeded.
It was all just luck.
Another surprising piece of news soon began to circulate: the critically ill man was no ordinary person. He was Rayden Carter, CEO of Carter Kingdom, the city’s most influential property company.
This revelation caused an uproar across the hospital, as nobody expected such an important figure to be treated there in critical condition.
Rumors that Team 5 would receive a substantial reward for successfully performing the surgery started to surface, a rumor that provoked Rafaela’s envy. She wished she could turn back time and have her team perform the surgery.
But realizing that time could not be rewound, Rafaela could only vent her frustration on that nerdy girl.
As Disha rested in her room, the door was abruptly flung open, and in strode Rafaela and Dena.
Bang! Rafaela slammed Aresha’s desk with force, echoing the irritation in her heart.
Disha remained silent, gazing at the two women with an indifferent expression.
"Don’t get conceited just because your team managed the surgery! If not for Doctor Anna, your team would have surely failed!" Rafaela declared with a venomous look.
"Do you even know who the VIP patient is? He’s Rayden Carter. A village girl like you has no right to be responsible for him," Rafaela raged further.
"So go now, find Doctor Anna and tell her you refuse to care for that patient again! Understand!!" She threatened, pointing her index finger directly at Disha’s face.
It was time for Team 5 to step aside, for her team to step up and take charge.
"Just a nerd!" Dena added insultingly.
Both women then smirked maliciously, their snickers filled with derision.
"Huh," Disha exhaled roughly after Rafaela and Dena exited her room, slamming the door shut once again.
It wasn't that she was incapable of retort, but Disha was too exhausted to entertain those two unstable individuals. Whenever Rafaela and Dena spoke, Aresha would simply deem it as fleeting as the wind.
Revision of Chapter 3.
"Huh," Disha exhaled roughly after Rafaela and Dena exited her room, slamming the door shut once again.
It wasn't that she was incapable of retort, but Disha was too exhausted to entertain those two unstable individuals. Whenever Rafaela and Dena spoke, Aresha would simply consider it as fleeting as the wind.
However, not wanting to prolong matters, she eventually gave in to Rafael's and Dena's wishes.
At that moment, Disha abandoned her intention to rest and sought out Doctor Anna. Stepping out of her room slowly, she immediately locked eyes with Rafaela and Dena at the end of the corridor, their stares full of intimidation, commanding her to promptly visit the CEO.
And as Disha made her way there, Rafaela and Dena followed at a safe distance, observing as she entered Doctor Anna's room. They quickly pressed their ears against the door, attempting to eavesdrop on the conversation within.
"Sorry, Doctor Anna, there's something I need to tell you," Disha said, complete with a gesture to the mother indicating that someone was eavesdropping outside.
"Go ahead," Doctor Anna responded, understanding her daughter's signal.
"I feel incapable of handling this case, I want to step down. Instead, it would be better for Doctor Anna to choose team one," Disha elaborated, truly indifferent to being replaced. In terms of healing, she was capable of treating anyone. There was nothing special, everyone was a patient to Disha.
"Learn to take responsibility, if you are unable, then learn, don't hand it off to someone else," replied Doctor Anna with such wisdom.
A response that made Rafaela and Dena outside clench their fists tightly. With things like this, they wouldn't be able to oust Team 5.
After their conversation ended, Disha exited. Outside, she no longer saw Rafaela and Dena.
The bespectacled girl then sighed with relief, quickly returning to her room to rest.
Time moved on.
At 9 p.m. sharp, Disha woke from her slumber, having slept with her head resting on the work desk. After performing surgeries, they were indeed afforded some rest.
She groped the desk for her glasses. Before she could rise, her cell phone vibrated, signifying an incoming message.
It was from her mother, who was surely in the CEO's office of the hospital at this moment.
*Sweetheart\, mama will be home\, Papa's come to pick me up. It's drizzling tonight\, wear your warm jacket\, my love*. Anna wrote in the text message.
Meanwhile, Disha could only stare blankly at her phone's screen. Fifteen years had passed, and she was still forced to live in hiding. As long as her family's enemies were at large, her life would always be in danger.
She longed to know who that person was, to unveil their identity and lure them out. But the family's concerns and her parents' fears forced Disha to remain silent, to endure her situation.
Living and being looked down upon by others.
Disha exhaled roughly once more, adjusting her glasses so they wouldn't fall. Then she rose from her seat and headed to the VVIP room.
There, the patient she had operated on that afternoon was resting. The patient had been moved to a care room, and Disha wanted to make sure everything was alright.
Not just anyone was allowed in this room, only the responsible Team 5 and family members.
Upon reaching the room, Disha could finally closely observe the man lying unconscious there. His body was hooked up to various tubes to help him keep fighting for life, with several medical devices actively monitoring each organ.
On the identity data, Disha read the name Rayden Carter, 26 years old.
There was also a man waiting faithfully. Disha knew he was this patient's personal assistant, Samuel.
"Good evening, Sir. Please allow me to check on him," Disha said politely, bowing her head as she requested permission.
However, her unimpressive demeanor made Sam wary. Could someone like this really be trusted to tend to his master properly? Fearful of a mishap by this inept nurse aggravating his master's condition, Sam asked, "Isn't there another nurse or doctor who can check on my master?"
And Disha was accustomed to being underestimated.
"I apologize, Sir. I will not undertake any interventions, just a simple examination," Disha explained.
"Don't take long, and leave afterwards."
"Understood, Sir."
After getting permission, Disha began her duties, but Sam's scrutinizing gaze never left her.
He continued to watch her intently, vigilant.
But it didn't diminish Disha's dexterity in the slightest; she continued to jot down some crucial observations in her small notebook, then slipped it back into her coat pocket.
Once her task was complete, Disha intended to leave the room. She was about to bid farewell to Sam when she suddenly hesitated, noticing something odd.
On the edge of the seat where Sam sat, a neatly placed jacket caught her eye. Disha could clearly see the gold-button with a black eagle emblem at its center.
Her heart skipped a beat.
That button matched one from the archenemy of her family. When Disha was young, a man had nearly killed her. At that moment, Anna had fought back fiercely, managing to rip a button from his shirt.
A button that looked remarkably similar to this one.
Sam was still wearing his jacket, which clearly meant the jacket belonged to Rayden Carter.
*Damn it! Could this man be linked to him?* Disha pondered.
But her thoughts were shattered when Sam's stern voice suddenly cut through...
"What are you gawking at? If you're done here, leave!"
Startled, Disha quickly averted her gaze from the jacket at the sofa's edge and bowed to Sam.
"Yes, Sir," she replied, then she exited the room.
Yet Disha was certain that she would return, to validate her suspicions.
If this Rayden Carter had ties to their family's enemy, then Disha wouldn't hesitate to settle the score.
Even as she left the room, Disha's fists remained tightly clenched.
