neena works as part of the train dispatch team at the busy birmingham new street train station, a transport hub for thousand of passengers every day. but while going about her duties around the station ,she spotted a young women at the far end of one of the platforms. what grabbed neena's attention was the fact she was standing on the very edge of the platforms and she wasn't moving..
there was no interaction withanyone she was very still and her gaze was fixated ," recalled neena.
"her focal point remained the some for a long time she was staring at the hacks",.
concerned ,neena's instinct told her someting didn't seem right.
"i watched her for a moment and realised.i had to make a call on whether.i had to make i would go and speak to her.i didin't want to make the situation worse ,"she said ,neena decided to go and talk to the girl and it's a good job she said**.
"as i approached her, i turned my radio down and took off my high jacket because i didn't want to make her any more upset or to draw attention to her .i didn't know what i was going to say something ."anything"
"hellow ,my name is neena ,how are you ? neena said to the women as she went to stand next to her ,but she didin't get a response .the girl continued to ignore needed ,making no eye contact and maintaining her gaze on the tracks.
worried she was about to jump , neena tried another approach ,"i noticed she had her makeup done really nicely .so i commented on it and told her , i love watching youtube tutorials" neena told ,cosmpolitan uk". it sound so silly ,but just wanted to some kind of comversation..
still getting no reply from the young women, neena persisyed with her one sided conversation .,while study signaling to her colleagues that there was an issue . as it turned out, one of he co-worker had already spotted what was going on and has called the british transport police for assistance as well ss calling the signal box to ask them to turn it off.
"there's just you ane me here's neena said eventually fo the girl on the platform edge . i just need to you to know that you can trust me and that ,i am only here to help you. i want to know that you're alright.
"at that moment she just burst into tears ," recalled neena ." i remember it so clearly she said to me , i am not okey,".
then the young women started to become frantic ,"she went into panic made ,it was so sad.i told her not to worry about anyone else, just to look at me ,and that we could go somewhere private .away from the station to have a cup of tea it she needed to**.
but she was paniciking and crying so much.
in between sobs, neena managed to make out that woman had lost her fathers ."she said she wasn't dealing with it very well,"said the station worker from their ,neena managed to gently coax the suicidal women a way from the plant from edge ,over to the middle of the plant form where the british transport police took over.afterwards ,neena made attempts to check she was okey, but the police weren't able to share any further details because of confidentiality.
neena doesn't know the name of the girl she spoke to that day ,but she knows her actions possibly contributed towards saving her life.
"to think that you could potentially having saved someones life is hard to digest ,"neena told cosmopolitan uk. "there 's always a fear there that you might make the situation worse but you have to try to say something beacause there's very little you could do to upset anyone more " people just want to know that you care.it can make such a difference .i think that's so powerful."
neena is working on 'small talk saves lives's campagin which has been lauched by the rail industry in partnership with samaritans and the british transport police.. last year there were 237 suicides or suspected .suicides on the rail network . a little small talk could be all it takes to interrupt someones suicidal thoughts.
small talk saves lives is a campaign to empover the public to act to prevent suicide on the railways and other settings. suicide is prevention and suicidal thoughts are often temporary and can be inteerrupted we went to give as many people as possible the skills to notice it someone might be at risk and give them the confidence to approach them.
a simple question or observation can be all it takes to interrupt suicidal thaughts and start the journey to recovery we're reminding people that they already know how to start a conversation ,giving them the confidence to act.
research carried out jointly for samaritans and the rail industry by the universities of middle sex and wedtminister indicated that a by standard camapign could be valuable as the public has a role to play in suicide prevention on the railways.
we have worked in partnership with british transport police ,network rail and yhe wider rail industry to develop the campaign ,we train thousands of rail .staff in suicide prevention ,every year many of them go on. to make an intervention and save a life . we encourage staff to notice if someone may be at risk and then start a conversation by asking a simple question , so making small talk.
we have also consulted individuals who have experienced suicidal thoughts ,those who have lost loved ones to suicide ,people who regularly travel by train ,and the general public . we wanted to make sure we considered range of experiences when developing the campaign . an example of of the importance of our campaign is sarah's story .
