The Domino Effect (A Harry Potter Fanfiction)

Prologue

The year 1990 was a great year for the Potter household. James and Lily Potter welcomed the arrival of three bundles of joy. Their children are Harry James, Godric Charlus, and Iris Dorea. But their happiness did not last very long. Even though the magical world remains nothing more but fiction to the muggle or non-magical world, it has taken considerable effort to prevent any information about it from leaking, especially with the wizarding world currently plunging into chaos with the wizarding war dominating in Europe being led by one of the most powerful dark wizards in the century, Lord Voldemort.

Just when the wizards and witches feel like there is no end in sight, a prophecy was revealed from the mouths of one of the greatest seers. A child is said to be born who will end the dark reign of Lord Voldemort. The death eaters (the group who follow the dark lord is called) heard that this child is said to be born from parents who have defied the dark lord three times and is said to be born at the end of July. Specifics that fit the current position the Potter family is in.

James and Lily Potter have fought and evaded Voldemort three times and their sons were born on the last day of July (their daughter was born after the stroke of midnight, making her birthday the first of August). The prophecy was supposed to be a secret. It was not meant to reach the ears of Lord Voldemort, but it did nonetheless. Because of this, the Potters along with the Longbottoms (another family who fits the prophecy) were recommended by Dumbledore to go into hiding.

For more than one year, the Potters and the Longbottoms remained hidden from the public. Being public figures, they were not easy to miss. While they remain away from the public eye, they did their duties as lords and ladies of Wizengamot such as approving laws, donating to charities, and so on. If they are not present, they let their proxies manage their seats which in this case is Albus Dumbledore. They kept their presence a secret to not reveal to their enemies, their location and their safety.

To keep their location hidden, the Potters used a Fidelius Charm. It is a complicated spell that requires the secret to be hidden within a person's soul, also known as the secret keeper, so even if people who wish them ill are breathing down on their living room window, they will never see or find the Potters. That is, as long as the secret keeper does not reveal where they are.

The Potter siblings are over one-year-old now and possess various personalities that keep the parents occupied from their isolation. Harry James is the eldest of the three and he, along with Godric Charlus inherited their father's black, bird's nest hair and their mother's emerald eyes. Harry was the calmer child, serious, and quiet while Godric was more boisterous, active, and mischievous. Iris Dorea was the youngest and the only girl but she has red hair with black streaks and her eyes possess two colors, one green, and the other hazel. She is also very curious and ever since she learned how to crawl and walk, James and Lily have to keep getting her out of difficult situations and locations around the house.

Living by themselves was not easy. The regular correspondents that they had with their friends and family were often not enough contact to keep the adults from feeling caged in a single space. But on Halloween, the Potter family was invited to attend the Halloween Ball at the Ministry of Magic. Despite the war, the ministry tried its best to create a sense of normalcy among its employees and the public. James Potter, who is known to be a social butterfly is tired of being cooped up in the small cottage at Godric's Hollow. They moved out of the Potter manor because the location is public knowledge to ensure the children's protection. While taking care of his children was a joyous occasion for the father, James is restless. He has not seen his best friends for months and has not seen or even touched another human being aside from his wife and children. Even if he does go out, who will he hang out to? Mooney was off-limits because Dumbledore and the rest of the Order believed he was a spy (even though he does not believe it) and Sirius was abroad somewhere in northern Europe handling a case from both the Order and the Auror's department. Peter, well, was being Peter, living alone and taking care of his ailing mother. He may be his best friend but the man was not a fun person to hang out with.

"It's just one night, Lily. I'm sure we can handle it for one night." James said when he begged his wife to go to the Halloween Ball with him. "Even if he does find us, he still could not attack easily in a heavily guarded building such as the Ministry."

But Lily does not want to leave her children. They could not bring them to the ball. It was too risky. But she also knows how restless her husband can be. If bored, he could blow up their house and she does not want that to happen, especially with their children inside. She could stay home, but she knew deep down that she was also getting cooped up as well and is needing a change of scenery. The cottage was protected by wards and the secret keeper helps keep their location away from the dark side. Blowing off some steam tonight should be fine. They have been here for almost a year, and nothing has happened. Albus will also be attending the party so there is some safety at the ball.

But Sirius and Remus are out of reach, only Peter Pettigrew, a.k.a. Wormtail and their secret keeper is the only person available who could babysit the children. Lily has wondered if she could contact Severus for babysitting but she hasn't spoken to nor seen him in years (despite being his former best friend). The man is even the fourth godfather to their children and he doesn't even know it. Besides, the man will officially become the children's godparent if Sirius, Remus, and Peter were to die or are sent to prison (in the middle of a war, the likelihood of dying is very high). So Lily approved of Peter watching the children for the night. Little did they know that this decision will change their lives forever.

Voldemort glared at the small cottage. The night was misty and a few muggles were running about dressed in horrid costumes to celebrate the wonderful eve of Samhain, the night on which power and magic are at their peak. It will be tonight that he will kill the so-called savior Dumbledore was very protective of and show the old meddling fool never to underestimate his power.

Waltzing in the cottage was too easy. The Potters never knew that Peter Pettigrew, their secret keeper, was the traitor in their midst. They were too busy suspecting the werewolf. The Potters were idiots thinking that this little cottage would protect them. There wasn't enough power in their wards. They would have been safe in Potter's manor. Even if the location is public knowledge, manors of old families still have strong magic in them that has been passed down through generations. Even those that have been abandoned for years still hold the strong impenetrable magic that would take years to break in even with his caliber of magic.

What Voldemort did not expect was the blood wards surrounding the nursery. Dark magic in the home of a light family? How odd and hypocritical. Dumbledore and his stance on light magic and his followers (or possibly the man himself) are delving into dark magic. Voldemort was sure the old man has experimented with dark magic. No one is that too imbued with justice and power to not even try to know what it is. But the blood wards were done by the work of someone inexperienced, possibly the Potters themselves? Ironic. It is still a strong one though.

When he looked in the crib, he was confronted by three faces staring curiously at him. One of them even started crying, how annoying! Nevertheless, all three are going to die.

Avada Kedavra!

BOOM! The second floor of the cottage exploded. Debris flew everywhere. Screams can be heard. And even Peter Pettigrew was sent flying out of the wall. Cries of babies can be heard and the wailing and screams from the Death Eaters echoed in the night as they felt their tattoos disappearing on their arms.

*****

Dumbledore peeks at the three Potter siblings. Poppy, also known as Madam Pomfrey, the Hogwarts school nurse has already checked the children. She was able to heal the bruises and cuts. It was a miracle they even survive after what happened. She suggested the children get assistance from St. Mungo's but Dumbledore deemed it too dangerous at the moment with all the confusion going on about Voldemort, especially with some of the most reckless Death Eaters now invading people's homes and attacking and torturing people about the whereabouts of their lord. Most of them however were silent. Probably in hiding. They are a cunning and cautious bunch after all but if given the opportunity they will take it. It was a shame they weren't able to save the Longbottoms on time. The Lestranges found them (after torturing and breaking their secret keeper into submission) and tortured the couple right in front of their one-year-old son.

Also, the explosion at Godric's Hallow caused a problem for both the Muggles and the magical communities. Even though the place is home to a lot of wizards and witches, an explosion like that can still get attention from the muggles. The explosion triggered his wards and he and the Potters arrived at a collapsed house with flames and debris everywhere. The Ministry was able to detect the explosion immediately and was able to respond to the issue as soon as possible by confounding the muggles into believing that a gas stove has exploded.

Dumbledore almost even made an order to the ministry and the Order to track down Sirius Black for his betrayal. Luckily, James stopped him this time to inform him that it was Peter Pettigrew, not Sirius Black who is their secret keeper. The one person in the Order no one ever suspected to be the threat or the spy. He wished the Potters did not keep this a secret. If James and Lily would have died tonight, Sirius Black would have been sent to prison – an innocent man and the poster child of the Order who came from a dark family and shifted to the light, and the children would have to wind up in the care of Peter Pettigrew.

When he arrived at his office, he receives a missive from Severus. It was confirmed that all the death eaters lost their mark. However, their marks can still be felt, confirming Dumbledore's suspicions that Voldemort must have found a way to prolong his life even after the loss of his body. The prophecy was correct. The dark lord will rise again and one of the Potter children will face him in the future. The question is, which one?

He glanced back at the three siblings. Poppy was not able to do anything with some of their scars. They were cursed scars as she said. Godric has a large "L" shaped scar on his right cheek, Harry has a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead, and the only daughter, Iris, has a large gash on her left eye. All three scars have signs of dark magic and because the nursery was embedded in dark residue, Dumbledore couldn't tell which child did the deed. So, he brought them to his office to see if he can sense which sibling is the chosen one, but even then no amount of assessment and scanning helped.

However, Dumbledore noticed that the aura was stronger on Godric's scar, much stronger almost pinging with magic. The old man assumed that the boy bears the brunt of Voldemort's spell and his siblings got the residual parts. Dumbledore was even surprised by how powerful the boy's magical aura was for a one-year-old and noticed how weak his siblings were, especially the girl who seems to be considered almost a squib in a level of magic (but that needs some verification). But it is still hard to tell, as magical cores are often unstable during this age. Considering that the boy is the last among the two who was born at the end of July, he is the one who fits the prophecy perfectly.

Dumbledore glanced one last time at the Potter siblings. As the savior and future protector of the magical world, Godric will need all the attention and training he can get to prepare himself for the upcoming war against Voldemort. He wondered what he was going to do with the other siblings. He will need to convince the Potter parents to find a way to focus all their care and training on their savior. When he left, he didn't notice that one of the scars from the sleeping siblings glowed.

Meanwhile somewhere in the distant land.

In a room full of ancient texts, a roaring fireplace, and portraits, one of the portraits spoke up to the man sitting behind one of the high chairs near the fireplace. "It's time."

"It's time. It's time." the other portraits echoed.

The man placed the teacup on the saucer, stood up, and opened the door towards the balcony. The sky is clear today and the moon is full. He glanced at the crystal ball that he placed in the middle of the balcony. It is currently vibrating and glowing. He glanced at the patterns of lines also glowing around the city he is residing in. It is invisible to the people but he can see it. The leylines are charged and powered. His ancestors are right. It is time.

Behind him, a large old map hangs on the walls. There is a mark placed on Great Britain.

Augustus Blake from MACUSA

The Dursley living room is very quiet except for the sip of the tea and the short clung of the porcelain tea cups. Petunia invited Mr. Blake to her house for tea. She looked calm but inside she is freaking out.

Petunia has some familiarity with the wizarding world back in Britain and is aware of the Ministry of Magic. Imagine her surprise that Mr. Blake explained that the MACUSA predates the ministry of magic or any other official magical government in Europe and they were the local government body in the United States for the magicals in the country.

"I am surprised you are familiar with the magical world," Augustus commented.

Augustus Blake is a nice-looking man who looks to be in his early 30s. He looked clean, with black hair, glasses, and brown eyes and the odd thing is that unlike most wizards in Europe, he was wearing "no-maj" garb. As a representative of MACUSA, he knows how strict the MACUSA is against the "no-maj".

Historically to prevent the knowledge of magic among the no-maj community, the government has been drastic against its use of magic. This includes taking away first-generation wizards and witches from their no-maj families as it was common in the past for these kids to get persecuted and killed. Even some parts of Europe also practice this in the past. They even have to separate relationships if a wizard or witch is with a no-maj person. This is why relationships like these are illegal. Although this was already repealed, it took a lot to validate a no-maj partner or family member to ensure the secrecy of magic is not revealed to the no-maj public.

Because the no-maj have become more and more advanced with their gadgets and technology including the rise of information gathering techniques and tools, it has become vital for the magic community to protect themselves. There have been a lot of publications about the fact that no-maj people were not exactly stupid as they were previously viewed. This includes the establishment of the No-Maj Monitoring Squad. They are divided into various departments such as monitoring no-maj activities, businesses, or even technology and the last is the monitoring for accidental magic from no-maj families. This is the department where Augustus Blake works. He is often assigned in the field to monitor the health and wellbeing of any first-gen witches and wizards which was never easy as it is common for them to

The United States has a very dark history of fighting between no-Maj and wizards and witches. There are still existing groups out there who would persecute wizards and witches, some are from religious groups and they often use the excuse of exorcising children which was horrible. So it is becoming common for MACUSA to monitor any first gens as it is very rare to have no-maj parents accepting of their magical children. They already find it difficult to accept their children who are different from the norms. What more if the child is magical?

However, this assignment was different. There were records of bouts of accidental magic in the area but the department could not point out where it is which was weird. It is often difficult to identify who uses magic in magical communities because magic is everywhere. While illegal magic may be detected but it can't exactly identify who it is however, in the no-maj community, this is different. It is easier to identify any magic in no-maj communities but not this time.

This is why Augustus, or Oggy as he was usually called, has to go to the field. He noticed that the magical bouts happen in a local kindergarten but also in the area where the Dursley lived. Since most of the children at the daycare also lived in the area, it was hard to know which child is a potential magical. So he has to live in the area to do his survey. Over the few weeks, he has been observing the area but could not find any vital conclusion.

He knows that his neighbors were British (the woman's accent was too obvious) and she has three children (triplets probably?). But he still could not conclude whether or not any of the children are first gens. The woman is a no-Maj. That is until he saw the little boy with messy black hair, green eyes the glasses running outside. He was sure the boy wasn't supposed to be outside. He has observed how protective their mother was. He was about to try to help lead the boy back but he saw the boy leaning near their fence and hissed!

HE HISSED! He noticed a small green snake that seem to be enjoying a conversation with the little boy.

Augustus recognized it! It's parseltongue!

Parseltongue is a very rare magical gift and is often reserved for those coming from the bloodlines of said Salazar Slytherin. However, due to the first wizarding war in Britain. You-know-who, who stigmatized the once ancient and beautiful gift.

How does he know? Because Augustus graduated from Ivermony. The founder of the school was a parcelmouth and is said to be the relative of Salazar Slytherin (A/N: Parseltongue refers to language, parcelmouth refers to the person who speaks parseltongue). Also, there is no way a child like this is the first generation!

First-generation witches and wizards do not have gifts. Gifts are often developed through enforcing magical bloodlines usually by having a union with another magical person! So this is how Augustus found himself in the presence of Petunia Dursley who he finally found out is the boy's aunt not his mother. One of the parents of the child is of magical descent.

"My sister is a witch but my family is what you call muggles". Petunia said. "I didn't expect to be found out this fast. I did expect wizards to probably find my nephews and niece but I just didn't expect it since there hasn't been any communication at all."

"Wait. Your sister is their mother and she is the witch? Is your sister die?" Augustus asked surprised.

"No, in fact, she is very much alive with her husband and the other child. They are triplets." Petunia answered.

"Huh?" Augustus is even more confused. "Why would your sister leave her children with a no-maj?"

"A no-ma what?"

"It is short for non-magical. That's what we call muggles in America. Other countries have their versions as well. But back to my point, why?"

Petunia sighed. "I don't know much. All I know is that my sister suspected that the children don't have magic so she left her with me." She didn't even bother to talk to me first. Petunia thought bitterly but didn't bother to say anything about it.

"I see. But the children are obviously not squibs." Augustus commented. He noticed a few small heads peeking at the door frame in the sitting room but decided not to comment about their eavesdropping.

"Yes, I know." Petunia answered.

"Do you wish help to reach out to them?" Augustus asked. "It is often encouraged for us for magical children to stay with someone with magic to help them out. Children at this age have bouts of accidental magic and it's dangerous not just for others but also for you. Most magical parents are often equipped to deal with it."

Petunia was surprised about this. "What?"

She has always wanted to talk to Lily about the situation but it has been almost five years. Even though Harry and Iris are both magical, she still raised the two and she already claimed them as their own. Why would she allow the two to be given back? If Lily and that husband of hers ever cared, shouldn't they have bothered to do some regular correspondence or even regularly monitor their well-being? This usually means they don't care and she doesn't want to put the two children in a situation where their parents might not be receptive to them.

"But I raised them." Petunia stated. "They didn't even bother to talk to me when they left the two on my doorstep in the middle of the night and I didn't even notice until the morning!"

"Wait, what now?!" Augustus was even more shocked. "What kind of..." He took a deep breath. He needs to calm down. This changed everything. MACUSA is very strict about abuse. This is why they have systems in place to take away first-generation children in abusive homes but this doesn't seem to be the case with the Dursleys.

"Might I ask, who are the children's parents?" Augustus asked.

"Oh, my sister is Lily Evans. Her husband, I forgot his name. I think it was Potter."

Augustus has another shock in his life, "Potter?! As in James Potter, the father of the boy-who-lived?"

Conditional

"The boy what now?" Petunia looked at Augustus incredulously.

"Um well..." Augustus wasn't sure how to explain this to the no-maj.

Everyone knows about the boy who lived, Godric Potter and this extended to his family, the Potters who were one of the oldest magical families in Great Britain. Although they were not considered among the sacred 28 magical lines (due to their names considered to be too common even among muggles), they were still known for their pureblood magical lines. Although the current Lord Potter is married to a muggle-born witch making the boy who lived a half-blood. Godric Potter is the first and probably only person to have survived the Killing Curse, a curse so reviled that no one can defend against it even if you create shields. But this little boy was able to do at the age of one, while at the same time vanquishing the dark lord, Voldemort, the leader of the dark forces in the first wizarding war in Europe. It was considered an amazing feat that the Potters became famous worldwide.

Augustus is also aware that the Potters have another child, Lilac Potter, who was dubbed one of the luckiest siblings in the world, all because she has Godric Potter as a brother. But no one has heard that they have other children. Judging from their ages, it would seem, that Harry, Iris, and Godric were part of a set of triplets but the two latter were discarded because they were squibs which Augustus finds odd. It's rare for magical multiples to be squibs, even rarer if one of the parents is a muggle-born as they tend to have magic children if their partner is also magical. Multiple siblings also tend to have a magical connection so it is difficult to separate them at all.

There is also the part that despite every assessment from healers, there is no guarantee that the child born will be magical or not. Squibs are rare and many of those who were declared as squibs at an early age are often not squibs, although they tend to have a less magical capability and a much smaller magic core (the magical core is less developed when they are below the age of eleven). This is why it is encouraged for them to monitor their children (and sometimes try to do things to push the magic out of them, some of which Augustus frowned upon) and from the looks of it, it doesn't seem like the Potters were monitoring them well even if they were assumed to be squibs and the fact that their aunt was able to travel to another country without needing input from the Potters.

But judging from the problem with the accidental magic they keep detecting, it doesn't seem like the magical cores of these two children are too weak that they could be mistaken to be a squib. This raised questions for Augustus and this usually means a "red flag". Normally it is easier to detect accidental magic but, in this case, there seems to be something that is blocking it which is why Augustus was sent to the field to find the family where accidental magic is happening. Frequent and powerful accidental magic usually happens when the child is very powerful or when the child is been through abuse and constantly has bouts of accidental magic to protect themselves. Usually, it's abused which is why this mission was declared urgent.

When Augustus gave a short view about the Potters and their fame in the magical community, Petunia was furious. "So, my sister gets to be rich and famous and play happy family while leaving her children in my care without even bothering to provide any financial support for them? I have to sell the house me and my husband bought together so we could feed ourselves. If it wasn't for this job, we would have struggled even more."

Augustus was feeling awkward after that but mostly disappointed. He listened to Petunia and was horrified to find that the two Potter siblings were left at the door in the middle of the night, had no communication, no arrangement for care, or even considered Petunia Dursley's feelings about the situation. Are there no alternatives to the care of squibs in Great Britain? Even a no-maj has to go through so many hoops just to find the right kennel for their dog let alone their children.

In the U.S., squibs were considered to transition effectively to the no-maj world with magical contracts to ensure they never reveal the magical world. They are also well-compensated for it as well which reduces resentment from them and the possibility of siding with scourers. In fact, as someone who worked in his department, many of the squibs have become vital sources of keeping the magical world a secret, especially those working in no-maj security, military, technology, business, and government agencies.

Augustus is very disappointed. He was one of the people who looked up to the Potters (although not at the same level of worshipping them and the American wizards were less concerned about the British Wizarding world). If this is proven true, then the Potters are considered risking the statute of secrecy. The MACUSA is very – very strict regarding the statute of secrecy. They did face a lot of complaints from the international magical community on how strict they were but due to the country's experience of no-maj and breaches from scourers trying to reveal their existence (and still do as they face more of such an issue compared to their European counterparts), you can't blame them.

First of all, even if they were squibs, leaving them with no-maj relatives is very risky. What if the child is not exactly a squib? Some squibs do have some sort of magic just not strong enough to be able to produce magic itself and this could still raise attention from the no-maj community. How could they be irresponsible? He knows squibs were often treated harshly in magical families the same way some first generations of wizards and witches are treated in some no-maj families but for the Potters who were avid supporters of no-maj rights, you would think they'll be less harsh towards their squib children? Let alone try to communicate and monitor their well-being? And what about Petunia Dursley and her son? They were no-maj. They could also be potentially harmed if Harry and Iris will have a bout of accidental magic like explosions for example that could injure them. Unlike wizards where minor scratches or broken bones are not seen as a big deal, for no-man, it could be life-threatening.

"As much as I believe that your nephew and nieces should stay with you especially since I noticed that they are being taken well, leaving them alone without a magical guardian is still dangerous for you and your son."

"What do you mean dangerous?" Petunia looked surprised.

"Ms. Dursley..."

"Petunia, please call me Petunia."

"Petunia, then. You may call me Oggy if you like." Augustus then cleared his throat. "As you may know, accidental magic can be dangerous. It is called accidental because it's done unintentionally, especially during their early ages which I am surprised you were able to live through it. Most magical parents can handle it because they have magic to protect them. But no-maj parents often do not have that protection which is why in some cases, in Britain for example, their magical government has agents in place to protect the no-maj (usually by obliviating them) until the child reaches the age of eleven when they start getting a formal education. However, in our country, we find that riskier as the more agents in the field could still gain attention so we often have to assign a first-generation child with a magical guardian."

"Wait. Are you telling me you are taking them away from me?!" Petunia shrieked. She is panicking now. Even if she tries to fight, she can't do anything. She doesn't have magic to fight back.

"WHAT?!" Three voices interrupted the two adults.

"Children," Petunia called out to them.

"No no no!" A tiny, redhead girl ran to her aunt's arms. "I want aunt Petunia. Don't let him take us away, Aunt Petunia!"

"Evil!" A boisterous boy, Dudley who ran behind hugging his mother, called the man out and Harry, the one with glasses said. "I'll go get a frying pan."

Why does he need a frying pan? Augustus thought but that was the least of his worries.

"Please, um." But the little girl's wailing is drowning out his voice.

"Riri, please calm down." Petunia chastised the redhead. "He is not going to take you away from me, right?" She raised her eyebrows at the man, goading him to agree.

"But..." Augustus sighed. "Yes, Ms. Potter. I am not going to take you away from your aunt."

"Really?" The little girl looked at him teary-eyed. That only made Augustus feel hurt, knowing he made a little girl cry like that. He didn't mean to.

"What I was trying to tell you Petunia is that you can still have custody of the children. The magical guardian will serve as a liaison officer between you and the magical world. They can act as consultants, teachers, and even lawyers if you think about it, helping transition the children from the no-maj world to the magical world and will also help you in any legal process if needed. This can be given as a compromise but it will not be easy because there are going to be a lot of inquiries and vetting to ensure that you will not violate the statute of secrecy, not to mention that the children's magical parents are alive and capable of raising them." Augustus explains.

"I heard about it. The law that stipulates that magic should not be known to my world?" Petunia stated. Augustus nodded at her.

"I have someone in mind that can help with the vetting process so you don't have to face too many queries from the government and he can also serve as a magical guardian as well. But that is still up to you." Augustus continued.

"I don't know. Is there a chance to think about it?" Petunia asked.

"Well, you do, but please note that other agents may not be as lenient as I am. They might forcefully take the children before the vetting could be finalized and it would even take months or years to even get that." Augustus said.

"How do I know I can trust you?" Petunia asked.

"You can't," Augustus answered honestly.

"Are you sure you don't want others to know about this? We can help you communicate with your sister. (They are already violating our laws leaving two magical children in the hands of no-maj, or so Augustus thought)."

"What?" Petunia looked surprised and paused. She has trouble reaching out to Lily but after all this time raising all three children by herself, Petunia has gotten used to Harry and Iris in her life.

"No." a loud, clear voice said.

The two adults turned to the green-eyed, messy-haired boy who is currently holding a wok.

"I don't want to meet my parents." The little boy declared so coolly that it surprised the two adults in the room.

*****

Harry James Potter has always wondered about his parents. His aunt Petunia didn't try to lie and make them think that she is their mother (they already do think she is but aunt Petunia didn't want them to feel like they were being lied to growing up). The moment he was aware of himself and his magic, he became fascinated by it. He wondered if any of his dreams were related to this and wondered why all that just disappeared from his life.

He has always been able to remember things more easily compared to Dudley and Iris who were more playful and creative even though they are still very young but Harry who occasionally helped Aunt Petunia in the kitchen saw many of the issues growing up. He saw once when Aunt Petunia didn't eat that day because the only food has been only enough for the three children or that on their birthday, they couldn't pay for the electricity on time so they started this tradition on their birthdays to have it at midnight (between his and Iris' birthday) and celebrate with only treacle tarts and candles to light up the room. It wasn't even last year until they finally can afford a cake. Even though it was a fond memory of Harry, he saw how her aunt struggled.

He, Iris, and Dudley eavesdropped on Augustus Blake who claimed to be part of the magic government. Harry was fascinated by the idea of learning magic. It was hard to learn more about it since he can't exactly find any information except those fiction books in the library but according to Aunt Petunia, they are not exactly true. So the thought he can be able to gain access to the magic community made him excited, that is until Augustus Blake told them about their parents.

Their parents don't want them. That's what he got from the meeting.

Their parents kept their brother and another sister but they didn't want them.

"Harry, dear. What do you mean?" Aunt Petunia kneeled in front of Harry.

"Our parents don't want us," Harry said.

"Oh, darling. That's not true. Your parents didn't know you are magical and I have trouble trying to contact them. If they know about it, I'm sure they would have kept you."

"That's just it."

"Huh?"

"Aunty, our parents didn't want us because we weren't magical. If we were, they would have kept us. Their love for us is conditional."

Petunia almost gasped at Harry. Her Harry has been thinking like this? He is barely six.

"Oh, Harry darling. I didn't know you feel that way." Petunia hugged him.

"I want to stay with you, Aunty. You could have just left us at the orphanage but you kept us."
