Kabane is working in the field when Yataro hears a person from Tokyo was visiting and told Kabane to stay there as he stinks. Inugami is arriving at Kabane's village with Mrs. Kusaka, who is explaining to him about the dead animals and hired him to deal with the situation. Mrs. Kusaka tells Inugami that they haven't told the kids yet as they will get scared, resulting in them not being able to go to school. She also further tells him that they can't let a stranger spread rumors either and asks him to keep it a secret. Inugami responds that keeping secrets is his specialty since he is detective to which Mrs. Kusaka refuses to believe since he doesn't dress like someone who can stay quiet.

While on the road, a deer blocks their path. Inugami asks if they can just go around it to which Mrs. Kusaka replies that deer are their village's specialty. Inugami then leaves the car to smoke a cigar and then sees Kabane in the rice fields. He tries to speak to Kabane, but he doesn't reply.

Later that evening, Inugami is in a hot spring called "Kanoko Villa", when Yataro comes to introduce himself and tells him that he will be helping him during his stay. Yataro then shares that he wants to get a job in Tokyo when he grows up and tells Inugami to not tell his mom since she she will say that Yataro will take over the inn. As he was taking a bath, Inugami asked Yataro about the other boy, Yataro tells him that the boy's name is Dorotabo, which came from the name of the yokai that lives in the mud in the rice fields since Dorotabo is always covered in dirt and fertilizer when he's working in the fields. Yataro reveals that they gave him a job where he won't be able to be around anyone since he smells bad since he was born. After his bath, Inugami approaches Mrs. Kusaka and says that he wants Kabane to be the one helping him instead.

On the next day, Mrs. Kusaka tells Kabane that he will be helping Inugami, which came as a surprise to Kabane. He then washed and went to bring food to Inugami, who then introduced himself as a detective who specializes in the occult. He then asks Kabane if he has seen something strange, but Kabane tells him they will speak after he eats as he stinks and people usually can't eat around him, but that doesn't bother Inugami. Kabane then tells him about the rotting animals he had seen and that it usually occurs at the new moon. Inugami gives thanks to Kabane and checks that the next new moon will occur in five days

The next day, Mrs. Kusaka is shocked seeing Inugami doing farmwork. She asks what he is doing to which Inugami replies that he doesn't have anything better to do so he decides to help Kabane. A friend of Yataro asks him what's the reason Kabane is with Inugami and Yataro responds that people from Tokyo has everything so a moron who doesn't know a thing must be new to them. Kabane then spends the next couple of days with Inugami, who was also helping Kabane do his job while waiting for the new moon. As they worked on the field, Inugami notices the stone around Kabane's neck and when he inspects it, he understood it was very valuable life calculus and no parent abandoning someone would give them that. Inugami asked Kabane if he wanted to see his parents, but Kabane wasn't sure as he never had thoughts on that before.

On the night of the new moon, Kabane is waiting outside, when Yataro approached him and started yelling for ruining his chance to go to Tokyo and in anger took Kabane's life calculus. Kabane immediately punches him, his face and hands started to transform into a monster, which scared Yataro into running, dropping the calculus. As Kabane took his calculus back, he returned to normal.

Kabane was crying behind a shack saying he was the monster, when Inugami found him. Inugami then decided to reveal that he is a kemono and explained that Kabane was a hybrid between human and ghoul and that the calculus works as a shield against Kabane's kemono thirst. He then told Kabane that it was a different monster that was killing the animals, hearing that Kabane got worried about Yataro and they went looking for him. As they found Yataro, and saved him from two infected dogs, they saw the culprit; a monster deer. Inugami shot the deer monster but wasn't able to fully separate its his head from its body. Kabane then jumped and put his hand in the deer's mouth and then ripped it from the monster's body.

On their way back to the house, Kabane told Inugami that he won't be able to stay, as Yataro now knows what he is. Inugami then pointed a gun at him and explained that his aunt had hired him to kill Kabane and that she also knew what he was, as his mother left him in her care. Inugami then asked again if Kabane wanted to meet his parents, but Kabane said no and asked for him to kill him. Inugami proceeds to shoot him in the head. Inugami showed the dead body to his aunt and then took it with him. As Kabane woke up, he was in Inugami's car, who told him he can't die as he is a ghoul and that they are now in Tokyo.

Kabane and Inugami arrive in Tokyo. Kabane then asks Inugami if it would be better for him if he died in the Deer Village. Inugami responds to not sweat the small stuff and proceeds to ask Kabane if he is hungry. He then gives him onigiri.

A flashback is seen in which Inugami talks to Mrs. Kusaka about raising Kabane. She then reveals that she brought Kabane under her roof in her sister's favor but raising him is too much for her. Inugami asks about Kabane's father to which Mrs. Kusaka replies that she doesn't know what he looks like. Inugami then clarifies if she really wants Kabane to be killed that she might end up getting a curse since he is a half-ghoul. Mrs. Kusaka replies that she is better off than if Kabane is still alive and tells Inugami to do whatever he wants.

Inugami and Kabane then arrive at a cafe and introduces Inugami Detective Office and give Kabane a change of clothes and a perfume to get hide the kemono's smell. They then head out for a job. After arriving at the scene, they went inside to see the situation. Inugami was asked to look through the door and asks the investigators how long it's been like that. The investigator responds that it's been twenty or thirty minutes. Inugami then orders Kabane to also take a look at the scene. Kabane looks through the door and sees the room infected with Sanshichu feeding on the people inside. Inugami describes that the bugs are harmless insects that just take a bit of your skin while sleeping but also have a favorite thing to eat and sees anyone who tries to take their food as their enemy. The investigator then panicking asks Inugami if there is anything they can do. Inugami responds that there is a way to get rid of the bugs but the people inside have a fifty percent chance of being saved and tells the investigators to wait for a while transforming his body into metal in secret. The investigator then insists to exterminate the bugs to prevent casualties inside. A child then appears saying they are not dead and to help them.

While everyone is panicking and Inugami buying time, Kabane says that he can go inside since they need someone to go in and take it out and tells them that he can do it. Inugami then asks if he needs a uniform to which Kabane replies that he does not need one. Kabane then goes inside the room and is immediately attacked by the bugs. However, he doesn't feel pain since he is a ghoul. While bugs are attacking him, he finds that one of the people is holding it. Inugami then orders Kabane to lift it and successfully removes the bugs from the people.

After the job, Kabane says that those are strange bugs and asks what their favorite food is. Inugami replies that Sanshichu feed on the feeling of guilt and tells Kabane that the shoes retrieved are probably stolen. The young boy from earlier came running to them and gave thanks to Kabane for saving his family. The boy then asks the reason the bugs appeared in their house and Inugami advises him that as long as they don't do anything bad, it will be fine and instructs the boy to return the shoes. The young boy is shocked and tells them that their mother always put them above herself and one day his younger brother brought shoes to their home and he knew it was stolen. The younger brother's face went white and bugs appeared on his body. Their mother covered his younger brother even though she was afraid of bugs.

Kabane then wonders about "family" and asks Inugami if he works for him, would he be able to meet his parents. Inugami then asks Kabane for the third time if he wants to meet his parents since he lied the last time. Kabane responds "yes". Inugami then tells Kabane that he can live at the office.

After arriving back at the office, Inugami introduces Kabane to his room which is a shared room and tells Kabane to take a shower. Kabane then takes a shower and sees a hammock and says that it's soft. Inugami is in the kitchen and talking to a certain "Inari" and tells about Kabane. While lying in the hammock, Kabane wakes up and proceeds to sleep on the floor since it's too soft

Kabane woke up in the morning, saw Inugami still sleeping and put a blanket on him, and went to do the dishes. Shiki and Akira then enter, with Shiki yelling that they got coupons for pizza and wanting to get one, but then saw Kabane and wondered who he was.

Moments later, Inugami introduces Kabane and told them he will be staying with them. He also explains that Kabane was a hybrid. Akira comments that Kabane was the same as Shiki, but that only annoyed Shiki, who then saw his clothes on Kabane. Kabane suggests to return them, but Shiki declined, not wanting to wear them anymore. Shiki then realizes he was one year older and acted superior, before going to the bathroom. Akira then introduces himself and Kabane told him he was a pretty girl, which made Akira cry and saying he was a boy and then stormed off.

Later Shiki was sitting with Kabane and eating pizza. He tells Kabane he doesn't like him and that he won't be his friend and Kabane accepted that. Shiki wonders why Kabane wasn't eating and told him to eat some. Looking at the pizza, Kabane commented he never had seen one before, which shocked Shiki and then gave a piece to Kabane. He watches him struggle with the cheese and laughed, but then remembered he doesn't like him and acted cold again.

In bed, Shiki is speaking with Akira and kept repeating he hates Kabane, but Akira told him it was probably because he was the first other hybrids he sees. Akira started to guess why Kabane must be there, as likely he had no other place to be, so Shiki can go and ask Inugami, but that annoyed Shiki telling Akira to go and ask. Akira got annoyed and went to sleep, and Shiki having no choice, then decided to go and ask.

When Inugami woke up from his nap, he told Kabane to go take a bath. On his way there, Shiki used his web to trip him. Shiki then asked Kabane why he came here. At first Kabane was literal, but then told him he was looking for his parents. Shiki told him they were probably dead. Kabane tried to get up, but the web was holding him, Shiki warned him to not try as it won't come off, but Kabane forced it and frees himself but injured his leg. As Kabane continued towards the bath, Shiki looked at him and saw his leg healed.

While Kabane was taking a bath, Shiki used more of his web in the bath, which made the water to start getting hard and trapped Kabane in it. While looking at Kabane and laughing, Shiki told him if he lived there, this was going to be his life and then left.

Akira wasn't able to fall asleep, as he needed to take a bath. He saw Shiki and asked him if there was someone in it and Shiki told him yes. At that moment Kabane entered the room and Akira was happy he will be going to the bath. Shiki wondered how Kabane came out, but Kabane told him he will tell him if he tells him about himself. Kabane then explained he ripped his hand and put it in the oven to make the water hot again and meld the web. Shiki then wondered why would he do that, as he would have let him go if he just asked, which surprised Kabane that he could have just asked. As he promised, Shiki then explained he his mother was Arachne and he can create web threads. Kabane asked if his mother was alive, but Shiki guessed she probably isn't. Kabane then told him she must be alive, which annoyed Shiki who told him that if they get separated from their parents, then they would go look for them, but since they didn't, they are either dead or abandoned them. Kabane still believed their parents didn't abandon them and that they are alive, but even if they were dead, they still need to find out who they were. At that moment Akira screamed as he got stuck in the bath from Shiki's web. Inugami then came to see what's going on and later told Shiki to bring Kabane to see Yoko Inari tomorrow.

Yoko received a message from Inugami that Kabane will be coming tomorrow. She told Kon that if she had the kid with the life calculus, she would have been keeping him locked up, as foxes aren't as nice as tanukis.
