Serial Killers

Jack The Ripper

In the first chapter, I will write about Jack the Ripper, a known serial killer.

He was active in the 19th century (1888), in the poor neighborhoods from Whitechapel, East End of London.

In today’s newspaper, he is called the Whitechapel Murderer or Leather Apron.

His usual victims were female prostitutes who worked or lived in slums of the East End of London. He used to first cut their throats then cause severe damage to their abdomen. The removal of the internal organs from minimum three victims, led to the rumor that he had surgical or anatomical knowledge.

His motives are still unknown, but it is believed that he caused the death of those people, because of sexual sadism or rage.

The name “Jack the Ripper” came from a letter (also known as the “Dear Boss” letter) written by a person who claimed to be the killer broadcasted by the media. The letter was believed to be a trick made by the journalists as an attempt to make people more interested in the story of the killer and increase the circulation of their newspapers. However, after discovering the body of Catherine Eddowes on 30 September, investigators noted a part of the auricle and earlobe of her right ear had been cut

*The “Dear Boss” letter was sent to the Central News Agency of London, dated 25 September 1888 and was received on 27 September. After that the letter was forwarded to Scotland Yard on 29 September. The content of the letter itself reads:

“Dear Boss,

I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they won’t fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. I am down on whores and I shan’t quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I can’t use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope ha. ha. The next job I do I shall clip the lady’s ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight. My knife's so nice and sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good Luck. Yours truly

Jack the Ripper

Don’t mind me giving the trade name

PS Wasn’t good enough to post this before I got all the red ink off my hands curse it. No luck yet. They say I'm a doctor now. ha ha”

The second letter was sent with a conserved human kidney, supposedly taken from one of the victims. The public increasingly started to believe there was a single killer known as Jack the Ripper.

Ted Bundy

In the second chapter, I will write about Theodore Robert Bundy.

Born in Cowell, on 24 November 1946 and was killed at the age of 42 on 24 January 1989 in an electric chair at Florida State Prison in Raiford. The exact location of his resting place is still unknown, as his ashes being scattered at an undisclosed location at Cascade Range, Washington.

Also known as “Campus Killer”, “Chris Hagen”, “Kenneth Misner”, “Officer Roseland”, “Richard Burton”, “Rolf Miller”, he was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped and afterwards murder numerous young ladies during 70s and possibly earlier. After a decade of denying, he finally confessed to 30 murders committed in seven states, between 1974 and 1978.

Convictions being:

• First degree murder (x3)

• Attempted first degree murder (x3)

• Aggravated kidnapping

• Burglary

Criminal penalty being two death sentences (1979, 1980) and 1 to 15 years in prison (1976).

To this day, no one is sure how many young women have been unfortunate enough to encounter this man and never see the light of day again, but it is believed that the actual number of victims is significantly higher.

Bundy was regarded as charismatic (telling people what they want to hear) and handsome, traits he exploited to win the trust of both his victims and society. Typically, he would approach his future victims in public places feigning a physical impairment such as an injury (pretending to be hurt) or impersonating an authority figure before bludgeoning (assaulting) them into unconsciousness and taking then to secondary locations (withdrawn places) to be raped and strangled to death. He often revisited the corpses of his victims to perform sexual acts with the corpses until decomposing. (Necrophilia is the sexual attraction towards or sexual act involving corpses) and destruction by wild animals making any further interactions impossible. Decapitating at least 12 victims to keep their heads as mementos in his apartment.

On a few occasions, he broke into dwellings (burglary) at night and bludgeoned (beaten up) his victims as they slept.\

In 1975, Bundy was arrested and jailed in Utah (landlocked/ inland US state) for aggravated kidnapping and attempted criminal assault. Soon after he became a suspect in a progressively (increasingly) longer list of unsolved homicides in several states.

Facing murder charges in Colorado, he engineered two dramatic escapes and committed further assaults in Florida, including 3 murders, before his final recapture in1978. For Florida homicides, he received 3 death sentences in 2 trials.

Biographer Ann Rule described Bundy as “…a sadistic sociopath who took pleasure from another human’s pain and the control he had over his victims, to the point of death and even after.”

One time, he even described himself as “the most cold-hearted son of a bitch you’ll ever meet”, a statement with which attorney Polly Nelson, a member of his last defense team, agreed and she wrote, “Ted was the very definition of heartless evil.”

I am sorry that I have been unable to write more chapters, but I will try to write at least once a month when I find time to get the information and write it down. And as a side comment: Damn, this dude was fxxking inane. At least I found out a new word (Necrophilia).

The Zodiac Killer

In my third chapter, you will be able to find information about the Korean serial killer, Lee Chun-jae, also known as the Korean Zodiac Killer.

Born in South Korea, on 31 January 1963, he served a life sentence for murder and rape (more than 30 confessed rapes and attempted rapes), eligible for parole after 20 years (allowed to bail after 20 years served). Despite the DNA evidence and his confession to the murders in 2019, he could not be prosecuted for them, because the state of limitations (prescriptive period, law that set a limit to the time in which legal proceedings may be initiated) had expired.

He was apprehended (arrested) on January 18, 1994 and imprisoned at Busan Prison.

Active in Taean-eup, now called Hwaseong (a city in Gyeonggi) and surrounding areas, between February 8, 1986 and January 13, 1994 (almost 8 years); he sexually assaulted women and young girls that he killed later on.

His victims were between 8 and 71 years old, his last victim being his sister in law. Only found information about 9/15 victims, so here are some remarks that have been noticed on several victims:

• All nine victims have been strangled, some by hand, one by an umbrella.

• Four victims were gagged, three of them with their socks and the 4th one with her bra.

• On eight of the victims, was found semen, which might indicate sexual abuse was prior to their death.

• Four victims have been found with their hands tied and one with her feet tied as well.

Time for a small plot twist:

The person who was actually sentenced to life in prison and served 20 years, wasn’t Lee Chun-jae, but an innocent man named Yoon Sung-yeo. Apparently he was tortured by the police into giving a false confession. His appeal (request) was denied and he had to serve 19.5 years in jail before being released on parole (on bail) in 2009.

Yoon filled for a re-trial on November 13, 2019, following news reports that Lee had confessed to all 10 murders. Two days later, it was announced that the police had reached a provisional (temporary) conclusion that Lee Chun-jae was responsible for the murder for which Yoon was wrongful convicted. The police said Lee’s confession in the eight murder ‘elaborately and coherently’ (meticulously/in detail and consistently) described both the victim and the scene. This confession made people suspicious that police had charged an innocent man.

In December 2019, the Gyeonggi South Provincial Police Agency booked and charged eight of the original investigators with abuse of power, illegal detention for allegedly (supposedly) physically abusing Yoon when he was a suspect, forcing him into giving a false testimony and falsifying investigative documents.

The court accepted Yoon’s plea (request) for re-trial in January 2020. The final court hearing was held on November 2, 2020, where Lee Chun-jae stood as a witness confessing to the murder and describing the scene. Yoon Sung-yeo was acquitted of murder on 17 December 2020.

That was it for the third chapter; hope you enjoyed it. From now on, I will try to write at least one chapter month. Also, though I am not the kind of person to do shout outs, I want to thank @kaname kuran for telling me about this serial killer.
