Adam Donnelly. The man I loved more than anyone……

But I will forget about him…..

So that I can start anew and move on.

“Maggie.” Adam called

Maggie was shocked to see Adam and got into thinking.

But why……… Adam is here….. Why did you have to come back now?

Suddenly a boy from the paramedical team started calling. His name is Jack and he works with Maggie.

“Maggie, let’s go. An old man is having a heart attack outside of town.

Hurry! His wife will never forgive us if we get there too late.”

Maggie sat in the ambulance and left. Adam was standing there and watching her go.

“Paramedics are always on the go. I’m amazed. Of course, doctors are the same when they have an emergency

case.” Hazel comes to Adam and Said. Hazel is a old member of the hospital that works at hospital.

“Are you done for the day, Adam?”

“Yes, almost time for shift change, Hazel.”

“I’m happy to have you back in Penhally. I didn’t think you would come back from London after establishing yourself as a great doctor.”

“I’m still just a resident.”

They walk toward to the hospital and on the other hand, the paramedical team bringing the patient to the hospital in an ambulance.

“Stay with us! Don’t leave your wife just yet!”

Maggie was pressing the patient’s chest continuously and trying to stabilizing him.

“There you go!”

After stabilize him she sit calmly in the ambulance and one of the team member who drive the ambulance asked her.

“How’s the patient?”

“Good. We did our job. Now it’s the doctor’s turn.”

“Let’s hurry to the hospital.”

Maggie drowned in thought.

I’m proud of my dark green uniform. But in term of hierarchy I healthcare, Adam is way higher up than me.

He’s beyond my reach in many ways. It won’t be like when we were in school…….

Suddenly she looked out.

Bicycles. They must belong to some kids. It’s quit far from Penhally……

Somewhere in town tonight, five kids will be scolded for not coming home in time for dinner.

They arrived at the hospital and get off ambulance. Patient admitted to hospital. All paramedical team breathed a sigh of relief.

“Ah, you’re back. How did it go?” Hazel asked to Maggie.

“I’m sure he will be fine.”

“Oh, good.”

They were standing there and Hazel was talking them and feels proud about them…

“Everyone on town is so lucky to have such a wonderful paramedic team….. Unless we get an emergency call, you’re off for the day. Come have some tea in my room…..”

Adam came out of the hospital when they were all going to Hazel’s room. Hazel saw him and invite.

 “Oh, Adam…. Why don’t you join us? I didn’t know you were still here.. Perfect. I just made ginger cookies….Come inside and have some.”

Adam couldn’t refuse and come to the Hazel’s room. But it’s awkward for both Adam and Maggie. They don’t know how to talk to each other.. so they stay silent.

Suddenly hospital chief enter to the Hazel’s room……

“I heard Hazel made ginger cookies?”

 Hazel turned back and smiled.

 “Oh, chief please come in.”

 After that Chief and Adam started the conversion.

“To be honest, I didn’t think you’d be come back, Adam.”

“I always planned to come back. But my mother didn’t like the idea.”

“I heard she passed away.”

“Yes, two years ago.”

They all eat ginger cookies and drink tea. They talked each other. Then one of the paramedic team lady Jine asked question to Adam.

“Your mother…..She didn’t like this town?

“Hey…..” In the middle of talked jack sounded.

Adam sit down the chair and ship a tea and say.

“My father passed away nine years ago in a storm. He helped children who were stranded offshore………”

After listening to all this from him, jine give him same warm words. “Oh….. He’s a hero….”

“My mother struggled to cope with the tragedy. She sold her house, left town……… and never came back.”

“Then why didn’t you come back sooner after she passed away?”

Hared this from jine, Adam didn’t say anything. Maggie was standing there and hared everything. She regret about this.

Suddenly Hazel’s room door opened and a lady came in and shouted…

 “Help!”

Maggie saw her. She was Kate. She lives next to the hospital. She looks miserable. When Maggie saw her looks. She immediately asked her.

“What happened?”

“Jem…. My son has been injured in an old mining site. Please help him!”

“Which mining site?”

Kate was very tried for search her son but she could not find him. She comes the hospital for help. Her eyes were red with weeping. She was looking like a helpless person.

“I don’t know. The phone was disconnected before I could ask his location……! He left home to hang out with his friends…..on his bike…..”

After hiring words to Kate, Maggie suddenly remembered about the bike.

“Bike….? How many bikes were there?”

“Four….. no, five, including Jem. Do you know anything?”

“I know where they are! There were kid’s bikes near the bushes on the way back from the patient’ home.”

Jack was surprised and said “Oh my goodness. You remembered that during the situation…..”

Jack and Maggie turn to the hospital chief and asked. “Do we have an emergency?”

Hospital Chief smiles and speaks with pride “ Yes, find out the exact location! I’ll contact the rescue team.”

“Yes, Sir!”

All team members become ready with all their necessary essentials. All team members sit on ambulance and leave.

“Why is Adam coming with us?” Jack asked.

“It’s better to have a doctor just in case they’re hurt badly.” Jine said to Jake who is driving the ambulance.

I can’t concentrate well when Adam is around…. I wish he didn’t have to come. But I can’t say that. Actually it’s comforting to have a doctor with us.

They arrives at the site. Jack sees the bikes and stops the ambulance.

“Right there! Kids’ bikes!” When Jack says, the attention of all team members goes to that side.

“Oh, yeah.”

“I was here too, and didn’t notice them at all. I should’ve know better.” Jack speaks softly and becomes sad.

“No, that’s not true. You’re an amazing paramedic. Women’s brains are designed to think about more than one thing at a time, unlike men’s. I learned it in lecture. We are just wired differently” Maggie opens the door and get down from ambulance. She speaks to Jack because Jack becomes sad. They walked toward to the mining site.

“I didn’t know this was a mining site.” Maggie asked to Jack.

“ There are many mining sites abandoned and forgotten everywhere in Cornwall. If you include all the small holes for drainage and ventilation on top of the entrances. You’re looking at countless holes.” Jack tells Maggie. They both go together while Adam goes first and lead them the way.

“We should be careful not to stumble………..”

Maggie wanted to say something then suddenly Adam release something.

“Shhhhh…..”

“What?” Maggie turned to Adam and asked.

“I heard something over there.”
