First Doesn’T Mean Last

Back to China

An airplane flew across the sky from England towards China's airport. It was a huge white plane with "British Airway" written on the right side, and the flag of England at the end of the plane. Slowly, it landed on the ground.

Among all the passengers, a female around her 20's came out of the airplane, pulling a black luggage in her left hand. She attracted most likely a lot of people’s attention thanks to her unique looks.

She was wearing a white dress with no sleeves. She had a height taller than an average woman and her long legs were elegant just like she was on the inside. Her purple hair was down making it blow around with the breeze. Her eyes were violet lighter than her hair as they shone like jewels as she looked around excitedly.

Right after her, a little boy came out and held the woman's larger hand compared to his. He was probably 4 or 5 years old from his height. He had white hair and a beautiful pair of ocean blue eyes. He was wearing an ordinary shirt and jeans pants.

A tall man came right after the pair of people. He had dark purple eyes and black hair. He was wearing a suit, like a businessman. He was handsome and outstanding. He was taller than the female whose language he took from her hand. He curved his lips at her as he held the child's free hand.

Strangely, the child didn't look like any of the adults he was with.

Who's may he be? Well, who knows. Maybe an orphan or someone’s adopted son.

They took a taxi and arrived at a hotel to spend the night.

"We would like to order two rooms." said the black-haired male to the receptionist.

"Alright. Number 306 and 307" she replied with a bright smile. The male was so handsome that the receptionist couldn't stop blushing.

“Let's go, Chen Mei,” said the male taking the language to the room.

"Mhm," the female nodded walking with the child. "Can you take care of him?.. I want to be alone,” said the woman hesitantly.

"Sure" replied the male with a faint smile and took the child in room 307 and left the woman in room 306.

Mei entered the hotel room. It was well organized. It had a soft-looking bed along with a wardrobe to put the clothes of the customers.

She approached the bed and laid on the bed immediately. She couldn't fall asleep no matter how hard she tried. She was very tired from the journey but the thought of being back in China reminded her of a lot of things she wished to not think much about.

She turned on the TV.

[A car accident has occurred once again in the street xxxxx. We can hardly identify the bodies. We are trying to...]

Chen Mei turned off the TV as her expression turned dark.

'It's been 11 years since you died.. mom... dad.."' she thought back to her past as she was unable to fall asleep.

Eleven years ago:

It was around 11:50 pm. In a room of normal size, there was a huge bookshelf where there were tons of books. There was a table with a chair where a little girl was studying while waiting for her parents to get home from a party they went to.

The girl had violet hair along with bright purple eyes. The next day was her exam, hence she decided to study at home and skip the party. She was a party lover but she wouldn't let go of her studies for it! It was more important.

The girl's name was Mei. Li Mei An. The Li family was very rich and powerful. She was born with a golden spoon. She had an older brother, but she never saw him since he left the house when she was only 6 years old. She could barely remember his face. All the photos of him were thrown away by her uncle and aunts, and her parents as well. She didn't know why her parents did so.

Mei An was so concentrated reading her math book, which she wasn't fond of, that she couldn't hear the phone ringing. When she heard, she stood up from her study table and went into the living room to pick up the phone.

The living room was vast but it had three sofa's and a table in between for snacks or tea time. There was a huge TV at the center of the wall on the left side for everyone seated on the sofas to be able to watch well.

Mei took the phone.

"Hello. Is this the Li family house?" A strange voice asked.

"Yes. What is it?" Li Mei replied.

"The madam and sir had a car accident. Please come to the City hospital right now."

As soon as she heard those words, she rushed into the hospital with her legs without even thinking.

She could see all her memories with her parents fading away. Her parents that she loved so much, can't leave her alone, she thought.

'Everything will be ok' she said to herself. Her body trembled in fear but she just ran, faster as possible.

After a long run, she arrived at the hospital. She asked the secretary where her parents were while panting.

"Room number 909" The woman at the duty was surprised by how a young girl came all the way there with bare legs.

She ran the stairs afraid the lift will take too long. After reaching the floor, she searched for the 909 room. Then, she saw her parents. Covered with blood. The doctor came out with disappointment and guilt on his face.

"Is there any one of the Li family here?" he asked with a low voice.

"Me," the girl replied.

She seemed to be around 14 years old. Her beautiful dark violet hair was a mess from running for a long time. Her violet eyes were filled with tears. She was panting still to catch her breath.

"I'm sorry.. it was too late."

Those words pierced through her. She could feel all her happiness fading away. Everything was breaking. Her whole world disappearing. She froze without being able to utter a word.

"Oh my, what's going on here?" Just then, said a female's voice.

It was her aunt. Her father's sister.

"A-aunt.. mom.. and dad.. they..." she couldn't finish her sentence and broke into tears.

The blonde female came and hugged her softly. "Everything will be ok, honey. I'm here for you. And your uncle and I will take care of you, my angel." She said with a small smirk that Mei failed to notice.

Li Mei An nodded softly holding her aunt while crying her eyes out.

-End of flashback-

Mei opened her eyes with a pale expression. She quickly sat straight up and painted.

“Was it another nightmare?” She softly ruffled her hair. “I can’t forget this. No matter what, it’s where everything of my past is...”

Worse Birthday

Mei closed her eyes again, as she recalled what happened in her life on her 18th birthday.

***

21st June at midnight:

That day was Mei's birthday. She was so excited she couldn't even close her eyes. She can finally start working.

Being a designer has always been her dream. She even finished her studies on it.

Mei was inside her room, the same room she had back when she was 14. She didn't change house because her aunt and uncle didn't have any other place to stay as they solde their house as their business went bankrupt. They had been staying over with her family it's been years. They were no less than a happy family.

Mei's room was the second biggest after her parents. The walls were painted blue, which is her favourite colour. It also had a lot of butterfly decorations on the walls. She had also written down her best friends' names on it.

Her bed's cover was violet, with two pillows that were in heart forms.

Mei laid on her bed as she took her phone from the charger on her night table beside her bed. She started texting her best friend, Feng hai*

(* Feng Hai means wind sea in Chinese)

-It's my birthday! (Mei)

- Happy birthday Mei! I hope you have a very good new year until you turn 20! (Feng hai)

- Thanks. (Mei)

- I wish I was there to celebrate with you. It sucks I'm studying overseas :/ (Feng hai)

- Don't worry! Let's wait until you come back next year :) (Mei)

- Go to bed. It's getting late. (Feng hai)

- Yes yes, you sleep early too. Goodnight (Mei)

- Sweet dreams. (Feng hai)

Around 2 am, Mei finally put her phone down to go to bed. She put on her blanket since at night it was slightly cold in her bedroom and she liked keeping her window open.

It was almost down. The darkness was slowly fading. And the moon took a turn and let the sunrise again.

Some hours later, a ray of the sun came on Mei's face causing her to turn around.

Someone opened the door, it was her cousin, Xiuying*.

*brave and beautiful in Chinese.

She had red hair with a pair of red eyes. She came in front of Mei and started shaking her as she bent down.

"Wake up, princess! It's your birthdayyyyy!" She screamed near Mei's ear causing Mei to jump up from her sleep.

"You're so mean, Xiuying! Let me sleep some more," the birthday girl whined.

"Stop whining and get up. We have to go out shopping." Xiuying said pulling Li Mei An up from her bed.

"Ok ok, lemme wash up then." The dark violet-haired girl said as she got up and went to the washroom to wash up.

Meanwhile, her cousin was searching for something...

"What are you doing?" A voice came from behind. It was Mei An.

"N-nothing," she said a bit panicked. She had a little sweat running down her face. "I-I'm searching for the necklace I gave you last time for the party. I wanted to wear it.. so that's what I'm searching for."

"Why do you look so scared? I won't eat you if you ask me to give it back, jeez" Mei walked towards her wardrobe and opened the door to the right where there was a box. She opened it, it was full of pieces of jewelry. She took out an emerald green pearl necklace. She gave it to her cousin

"Here, here. Satisfied?" Mei asked tilting her head on the side a bit.

"Yes. Thanks" her cousin smiled forcefully.

Mei An went to take a shower then changed herself into a nice dress. It was a violet one. The decoration on it was pretty simple. There was only one ruby pearl on the center of a ribbon placed between her chest. She also wore the bracelet her mother left before dying; her favourite. She was going downstairs to see how everyone was doing as she heard someone talking in the next room. It's her uncle's voice, deep and soft. But strangely, it was cold and heartless, a voice Mei had never heard before.

"We need to find it as soon as possible." Her uncle spoke frustrated.

"Indeed. That idiot won't even know what she lost since she's so stupid" a giggle came out as these words were spoken. The one talking was her cousin, Li Jin, Li Xiuying's older brother. Mei An looked up to him as her older brother who she loved for years now. She was shocked as she heard him talking that way. The gentle cousin she admired is nowhere to be seen right now.

"Mei Li An. That girl is quite foolish," he chuckled saying those words as his bright yellow eyes were darkening. "She didn't even doubt that her brother left because we tamed her dumb parents!"

The young woman ran away hearing that. Teardrops fell from her eyes.

'This can't be happening. They are my family. They can't do this to me!'

The fresh weather slowly started to darken. The bright blue sky got covered with grey clouds. It started raining but Mei could care less.

The storm going on inside her heart was way worse than the simple rain.

She tripped on the ground losing her balance and fell on the surface of the gravel causing her leg and hands to get scratched.

She was bleeding a lot but she didn't care. She crawled up in a ball, hugging her knees and crying until she saw someone's feet coming towards her. It stopped right before so she lifted her head to see who, but her eyes were too blurry from tears.

"What's wrong? Do you want to die here?" A deep gentle voice asked yet with coldness filled into it.

Encounter with a stranger

"What's wrong, woman? Do you want to die?" A strange male voice said.

"It's better than the pain I'm going through right now." She smiled as her mind was going blank. The loss of blood caused her to lose conciseness.

***

Mei Li An opened her eyes only to find herself in a strange room.

'Where's this place?..' she wondered looking around the room.

The room was filled with pictures of a man. He was quite handsome. His eyes were blue like the ocean. His hair was white just like the moonlight. It was less white than the snow yet prettier.

'Such a handsome man..' the thoughts were stopped as a footstep was heard near the door. Then a woman came inside with a glass of water on a tray.

"W-who're you?" Mei An said backing up against the wall beside her as the female entered the room.

The woman was around 45. At least, looked like it.

"You're awake? I'm glad," she said with a smile on her face.

"Do I know you?.."

"No, the young master brought you here. Do you want to meet him?"

"Yes please.." Mei An mumbled softly.

The woman walked out of the room as Mei Li An waited to meet the person who was brought here to this strange place.

Who would let a female stranger inside the room of a man? Especially this handsome.

-After a while-

There were once again steps near the room. But this time one of extra. Mei An guessed the woman kept her words.

No one knocked on the door though Mei An was awake. The old woman and a man came in.

'It's the guy in the photos of the room!' Mei thought as he entered the room.

"You are?.." she asked as he came closer to her.

"You don't know me."

"I know that. Isn't that why I'm asking?" She said annoyed with his reply. 'Anyone would have introduced themselves first after saving someone, right?. How rude!'

"You should introduce yourself first before asking someone else," he said with cold eyes sharper than a knife. His deep blue eyes were piercing like sharp ice.

She gulped and looked at him. His aura was really strong and commanding. Without being able to deny or refuse she replied.

"I'm Mei An. Li Mei An. You?"

She asked as she titled her head on the side a bit.

"I'm just a normal person."

He replied with a smirk enjoying her upset face from not being able to refuse what he said.

Mei sighed giving up and looked around once around.

"So where am I?"

"My house"

"How tho?" She said rolling her eyes looking at him.

"You were near the company I work and you fainted in front of me."

"Ah.. yesterday.." she mumbled as everything that happened on her birthday flashed in her mind.

"I need to go...” She pulled off the blanket on her and tried to stand up as she felt her legs giving up causing her to fall. She closed her eyes tight as she was falling.

'It-it doesn't hurt?'

She opened her eyes to found herself on top of the male who had saved her once again. She gasped and got up as quickly as possible.

"S-sorry I don't know why my legs wouldn't let me stand up."

The young man sighed and looked at her sitting on the ground.

"If only you knew who I was you wouldn't dare to make me fall." He said pissed off. No one ever dared to touch him without his permission but there this strange girl dared to push him down.

"Anyways."

She said landing her hand on him to help him get up. He took her hand and stood up.

"I need to go back check things. Can you drop me at my house?"
