They say "time waits for no one" and, usually, they are right. Time never stops for anyone. But, this world, completely changes that statement. There are a few laws that this world completely breaks. One person in particular does.
Ichiro is your average 17 years old third year in high school. Pretty much average in every subject. But these are just irrelevant details. He has a power which no one knows about, a power which controls every inch of this universe. The power to Reset.
March 6'th.
Ichiro woke up in his comfy bed, mumbling about how much he hated waking up at 5 AM for school. 'At least this is the last year', he thought lifelessly. He dressed up, brushed his teeth and started his long trip to school. Thoughts started rushing into his head, not letting him focus on the surroundings. 'I Reset 8 times up until now and each time got worse, both my health, and the reason I had to use the ability.'.
The Reset ability allowed the user(which was Ichiro only) to wipe out everything that happened in a time-line. Suspiciously enough, everytime he did it, the time wasn't reset to 0, where everything about the universe began, but 2 months prior to the present. Everytime he used it, his Soul decayed by a bit. Souls are the essence of every human and their magic abilities. Souls are divided into two pieces. Life Force (the thing that keeps you alive) and Energy (the Soul part that you use for spells). The vast majority of the spells use Energy as their "cost". But there are certain spells, stronger ones, that require Life Force. If your Energy runs out, you need rest, preferably in your Elemental habitat. If your Life Force runs out, you're dead. Life Force affects mental health as well. Now, Ichiro's Reset ability required a lot of Life Force and he didn't know any details about it because he was the only one using it. Whenever he talked about someone else about it, his Energy would instantly run out and he would pass out before saying a word.
Energy also has it's divisions. Spells are of 4 types. Water, Fire, Wind and Earth. There are rumors of Darkness existing, but nobody is sure yet. Water has the ability to heal, use shields and deal damage with various water-made weapons or spells, but it's not the perfect Element to fight with. Fire, on the other hand, is the offensive type. You have a large variety of spells which you can use for fighting. The weak point is that it uses a lot of Energy and has few shielding techniques. Wind is a balanced Element. You have plenty average offensive spells and some other shields and healing spells as well. The issue is that you need to master it really well for it to be efficient. Wind users also tend to be very fast. Earth is the slowest and strongest element when it comes to durability. You can use spells to create impenetrable shields and armor. You can also use Earth Gauntlets to punch your opponents in the fact and probably break their whole cranium. It's weakness is the slowness and the consumption of Energy.
There are some combinations like Ice(Water and Wind), Lighting(Fire and Wind) and some others but their consumption is immense and they're not so effective.
A lot of Dojos were created for people and teens, especially, to learn and master their powers and Ichiro was about to be spending his first day at one.
After the first three classes ended, Ichiro went to the cafeteria to eat his lunch. He had it prepared from home, since he absolutely hated cafeteria food. He sat down on a stair and started eating his sandwich. Usually, he'd sit with the one friend he got, but he was sick, which sucked for Ichiro, but at the same time didn't bother him so much. He watched the popular girls and boys gossiping about other popular kids in school. He couldn't stand them. 'They do nothing yet they think they're the superior ones. Bullshit', he thought while taking another bite of his food.
He finished eating in a couple minutes and he had about 15 minutes left until the bell rang, so he decided to go outside for a bit. He started walking in the school yard, seeing kids from different classes playing different games, talking.
'Hell if I know how they got so much energy', he mumbled while watching the little kids. He sat down, his back against the wall and pulled out a cigarette from his pack.
'I guess this is the last one', he said without energy. He lit it up and continued watching the kids. He didn't really feel joy in anything, that's why he started smoking a week before. He hoped that the courses at the Dojo he was going to attend would change that.
When the bell rang, he stood up and went to class. 'Another boring 3 hours. Maybe I'll sleep for a bit', he thought.
The three last classes went pretty well. Pretty fast, if you'd ask Ichiro who slept through every single one of them. He was heading to the Dojo as he was mumbling about the possible outcomes. For context, he got a random got 5 days before and he decided to answer. He was asked if he was interested in participating in a course which was going to teach him a way to control his Soul. He knew about Souls and he was well aware that his control sucked. Even if it seemed a little suspicious, he accepted it, not having much to lose. As he started walking faster, his thoughts left him and he concentrated on his "goal".
Once he arrived at the Dojo, he walked in and an old man greeted him.
'Welcome, young one. How may I be of service to you?', he asked. Ichiro looked at the man weirdly and answered.
'I'm here for the exam.... Who are you?'
'I'm the one who called you here, your... Sensei you could say. My name is Wu, if it makes you more comfortable'
'I understand then. Will I start the exam now?'
'You already did', Wu said, smiling slightly.
The floor started shaking below Ichiro as he pulled his sword out. 'What do I even do now?', he thought. He had very few spells and skills to choose from and falling in an endless hole wasn't helping.
As he was falling through the hole, he tried analyzing his surroundings. He couldn't see a think in the pitch black pit and there probably wasn't anything for him to grab. 'The only thing that's getting me out of this is a spell', he thought. He closed his eyes and started concentrating all the Energy he had left into his hands. A large gust of wind shaped like a ball.
'It's either do or die at this point', he said with exhaustion.
He flexed his arm and threw the spell down with maximum force. After a few seconds, a loud noise reached Ichiro's ears. Immediately after, he was boosted upwards, like he was using a jetpack.
He landed on the floor, next to the old man.
'Impressive, young one', he exclaimed looking at him.
'Not so impressive when you're about to die.', he mumbled at the old man. 'What were you going to do if I failed?', he asked.
'There is a teleporter at the bottom of the hole. It brings you back here'
'First, how is there an actual bottom to that void? And second... was all the Energy I wasted in vain?'
'No, not really. I use this test to determine whether or not you are able to withstand the practice I'm going to assign you to. And I will have to place you in a ranking system. But I'm going to tell you about it later. For now, welcome to the Tsurugi Academy!', the old man said.
'Hah... yeah, thank you.', Ichiro mumbled.
'Now, I'm going to show you the way to the guest room, that's where you'll be staying for a while.', Wu said.
'Alright'.
The two of them started walking around the building. As Wu was showing Ichiro around, he explained to him how their ranking system worked. Depending on the abilities of the fighter and the raw power, there were 4 ranking groups that they could be in. S(the best one), A, B and C(the worst). Group C wasn't a bad one, but the people placed in that rank were either lacking experience or the basics. There are 10 people in rank S, 12 in A, 12 in B and 15 in C, also ranked . To promote to the next rank, the respective had to fight the one who was placed first in their rank group and win 2 out of three fights to promote. In battles, the fighters are using weapons, but no physical damage is made. The fight damages the Life Force, which can be regenerated by resting. The one who's Life Force reaches 80% or below during a fight, loses. There are three rounds and the loss condition for the last one is 40% Life Force or less.
'This is really darn complicated. Is this all though?', Ichiro asked in confusion.
'Yes. There are actually two more things I need to mention. We have another rank. The SS rank which only one person is part of, you'll meet her soon. She'll be the one you'll face to determine which rank is suiting for you', the Sensei said.
'Well, I hope I'm not going to get instantly killed..'
'No, she'll be on the defensive pretty much the whole fight'.
After Ichiro entered his room, Wu left, telling him to meet him in the main hall three hours later. He unpacked his things, which were not many and sorted them out a bit with the little space he had avaliable. He pulled out his katana from his backpack. That sword was his grandfather's which made it very special for him, as he was the only person in his family he didn't hate . Yuichiro Shuuya, his grandpa, was one of the strongest Energy users of all times. He could use Water, Air and Fire, which was absurd for those times. Nowadays, using two elements was slightly above average, while using three was fairly impressive.
Ichiro picked up his katana and took a battle stance. He tried concentrating his Energy on the sword. He wanted to use the first form of his Aura. Aura is basically the Energy he uses, but Aura is the physical form of that Energy. Every element has Aura. The Water Aura has 8 forms, or abilities. The Fire one has 10, while the Earth one has 13 and the Wind one has 9. The combined ones, such as Lighting, all have 6. All the forms have their own names, only changing slightly depending on the weapon. There are zero Auras which can be used without weapons. Ichiro wanted to master Wind Aura 1 (Stream Slash). The ability allows it's user to form small air currents around the target as Wind slightly damages the enemy's Life Force depending on the duration.
After about an hour and a half of practicing, he still was at square one. He only had a couple weak Wind spells that didn't require any weapons. And usually those are the weakest. Only one non-elemental skill was actually doing something. He had one spell named Enhance. He was the one to actually come up with it. The skill simply enhances every muscle in the user's body using their Energy and some of their Life Force. Ichiro was able to scale it up to 110%. It's a lot considering humans usually use about 60-70% on a regular basis.
After a while, he got ready and started walking to the hallway Wu was waiting at. A girl was standing next to him. For what Ichiro was expecting she was rather... short.
'So, you're the new guy, huh?', she said confidently.
'Yeah..'
'Ichiro, the fight can start any second from now. The start of a fight isn't announced.', said Wu.
The old man backed up and casted a barrier spell on the two of them.
'Now then, show me what you got'.
