A Japanese Emperor had collected twenty very fine vases which was his hobby. One of these vases was broken accidentally by a servent. The Emperor was furious and ordered that the servent be put to death. Just before the order was carried out, an old man came to the palace. He was walking with the help of a stick. He told the Emperor that he knew the secret of repairing the broken vase. The Emperor eagerly took him to his collection. Before he knew what was happening, the old man broke all the remaining nineteen vases with his stick. The Emperor shouted, ' you fool! what have you done?' The old man replied very calmly, 'I have saved nineteen lives. Each of the vases would have taken one life. Now, you would only have to take my life.' The Emperor was extremely pleased at the courage and wisdom of the old man. The Emperor pardoned both him and the servent.
