Hannah And Her Stepfather

Funeral

Our story starts in an airport. Which makes sense since Hannah is a stewardess. Yes, I said stewardess, because the Korean word is derived from it. Very chic. Looks like she works for Asiana Airlines. As Hannah steps off the elevator, Hannah narrates that walking in her uniform attracts the attention of men, women and children. As Hannah walks by people stop and stare. A guy looks over his sunglasses at her, in awe. Most of the people she passes are slack-jawed.

She's joined by other stewardesses, including Ivy. People continue to stare as they walk by. The confidence with which these women walk. They’re pretty darn cool. You might think I’m being facetious when I say that being a stewardess is considered cool. I’m not. Being chosen as a stewardess is a big deal in Korea; there are girls I met whose dream job is to be a stewardess.

Switch to a crowded chaotic airplane. Much more chaotic than my Koraya Air flight. Hannah helps Emma load a heavy carryon into the overhead compartment.

Crying baby, complaining customers. Guy asks for water (before the flight takes off). A couple loudly argues over something not being packed. Hannah says that she meets all kinds of irritable people at the beginning or at the end of a flight. That's her work. And she does it with grace and a smile.

Hannah walks by Ivy. Camera pans to a woman with sunglasses on. She takes them off with irritation. She stands up and tells Ivy that she’s Callen's fiancée. Whoever that is. Ivy looks uncomfortable for a second and then pleasantly tells Fiancée to please go back to her seat. Fiancée demands to know why Ivy is ignoring her calls! If you're going to be like this, why would she answer them? She wants to know why Ivy is making her get on the plane! Sweetie, no one made you get on the plane, or act this obnoxious. Ivy still tries to be pleasant (and innocent).

Fiancée waves a dismissive hand at Ivy and says that they’re done talking. Were you talking? I thought you were just yelling and being rude. Fiancée tells Ivy to give back the car or she’ll report Ivy for being a thief. Ivy replies, the smile cracking, that the car was a gift! This earns Fiancée grabbing her hair bun and trying to shove her face into a seat. Ivy starts yell for Fiancée to let go of her hair!

Passengers stand up to watch – most of them are appalled. Not all, though. Hannah arrives and pleasantly tells Fiancée that it is a crime to threaten or physically assault a stewardess. Fiancée could be arrested. She asks for Fiancée to please go back to her seat.

As Fiancée goes back to her seat, she mutters about why Hannah is bringing the law into it. Um, assault? Plus, there’s always the Nut Rage incident.

Hannah gives Ivy a look that says to cut out her shenanigans and Ivy uncomfortably looks away. I guess there’s a story there.

Narrating Hannah says that life is a trip. You never know who you'll meet, and in what kind of situation you'll get caught. Hmmm… I wonder what she’s referring to.

Flight lands and stewardesses disembark. The juniors say goodbye to Hannah and Emma – except for Ivy, who just walks by without saying anything. Emma is annoyed and amazed at her lack of respect. Hannah answers that Ivy has no energy when she’s going to be disciplined. For disrupting the flight and making Asian Air look bad. Emma takes comfort in that.

Hannah smiles and sighs as she looks at her phone. Emma asks if Hannah’s heart still pounds after nine years. It does. Hannah adds that her fiancé said that he'll surprise her today, and he sent her a café card to "Romantic Island." Emma practically squeals as she says that it’s a café specializing in proposals! Hannah likes the sound of that. After all, she did say that he still makes her heart pound.

Switch to Romantic Island. There’s a path of lights and rose petals, tons of balloons and Cody standing at the end with a bouquet of flowers.

Sign behind Cody asks Hannah to marry him. They smile at each other – although she looks a little uncomfortable. Her face is expressionless as he asks her to marry him. She pretends to be surprised as she gasps and starts to smile. Cody beams as he hands her the bouquet.

She smiles at the bouquet and he smiles proud of himself. She still hasn’t said yes. She giggles and he goes to get the ring. He’s tied it to one of the balloons… but can’t find it. Hannah helps and finds it. Hannah narrates that you can't predict anything in life. Cody chuckles and hurries over to put the ring on her finger. Narrating Hannah says “Receiving an awkward proposal from a long-time lover.” They’re only awkward when you’re not really that excited about marrying the person. They laugh.

Now they’re eating, serenaded. I don’t recognize the song. Majorly cheesy, though, and the guy is singing it with gusto. Hannah gets a phone call and she steps away from the table to answer it. It’s her uncle with terrible news. Her mother was in an accident and has left the world. As stunned Hannah’s hand drops to her side and she does move as Cody and the restaurant staff start shooting off streamers and confetti.

Hannah narrates that you can't predict anything in life. Someone she thought who'd be by her side forever...

Hannah's mom funeral. Hannah’s co-workers offer her condolences. Cody walks them to a table and puts in the order for food. Ivy seems a little too eager to catch Cody’s eye. And is wearing dangly earrings. Tacky, but eye-catching. She catches his eye and he’s uncomfortable.

Hannah never moves from her spot, seated by the funeral display. I feel so bad for her. She narrates that you can't predict anything in life. Shoes approach. Man doesn’t enter but looks over at Hannah. Hannah narrates that including the fact that her mom’s death was not an end, but a beginning to a huge incident. You can't predict anything in life. Man is Alvin. He looks really sad. And it looks like he’s looking more at Hannah than H.mom. I wonder what he’s thinking.

10 months later

Hannah and the group are just finishing up a flight. Emma tells Hannah that she worked well. Glamorous music starts to play. Ivy’s phone starts to ring with received texts. Hannah texts someone that she’s arrived. She’s a little surprise that there’s no answer. More texts on Ivy’s phone, which she is intentionally not answering.

Emma leans in and whispers, calling Ivy a fiery fox... Whose son did she suck the life out of before she dumped him? Glancing at Ivy, Hannah says that Ivy didn't dump him yet. She likes him this time. Emma wonders why Hannah thinks that and Hannah answers that Ivy’s face is full of a sense of satisfaction. Emma wonders why Ivy isn’t answering. When Hannah says it’s because she likes him. Emma can’t believe Ivy’s games. I can’t believe men fall for them either.

Hannah sends another text, remarking that her first text was read. She tells him to work hard. Because she assumes that the person isn’t answering because of work. Ivy gets another text and smiles to herself. Emma spots Cody and points him out to Hannah. He’s not working and he’s looking at his phone. So did he just not answer her? He turns around and awkwardly waves at Hannah. Wow, he looks excited to see fiancée and girlfriend of nine years. Ivy’s stopped smiling.

Hannah greets Cody as senior. Emma greets him and Ivy doesn’t say anything. Why can’t Cody stop looking at Ivy? He says hello and she nods a hello, with an innocent Oppa-you’re-the-best look on her face. Emma comments that she heard Cody has been really busy since he’s so successful. Yeah, right. And that’s why he can’t stop looking at Ivy. Ivy hurries Emma away, even as Emma silently protests. Cody watches them go.

Hannah slaps Cody’s arm and tells him that he should have texted her if he was going to meet her at the airport. Cody turns around and quickly says that he’s going on a business trip all of a sudden… to China. Hannah wants to know when and the story changes to investors are coming from China today, so he has to reserve the hotel and meet with them for a few days. Hannah looks a little disappointed.

Awkward face and Cody makes a face – like he hates himself. Or maybe I’m reading into it. He rubs his hair at the tension. Guilt. Hannah apologizes. Cody’s a little thrown that *she’s* apologizing. She replies that since H.mom died, all she’s done is work. She promises to slow down and be good to him from now on. And I gag a little. The cheater doesn’t deserve it! Wait. His cheating hasn’t been confirmed. But he sure is acting guilty. Cody smiles, looking guilty. He offers to buy Hannah a coffee and sandwich. She replies that she’s still on duty and can't carry stuff like that while she’s working. Hannah tells Cody to have a nice meeting today and work hard. She’ll be going. She is oblivious and Cody sighs, looking really guilty.

Outside the terminal, Hannah realizes that she forgot to give him a gift. She hurries back inside, calling him at the same time. When she spots him, he’s on the phone. Cody desperately asks where Caller is. He worries away. Hannah follows him.

Cody leaves the airport and starts running to meet Caller. He runs out in front of a bus and almost gets hit. Hannah yelps and then wonders if he’s gone crazy when he doesn’t really react but starts running some more. She hurries to follow. As she comes around a corner, she sees Cody meeting his Caller. It’s Ivy. And I want to beat them both. Especially her, smiling all smugly as she walked behind Hannah.

Ivy gives good Oppa face as she tells Cody – sounding worried, of course – that Cody looks terrible and it’s making her feel sad. She refers to herself in the 3rd person and actually calls him Oppa. I hate her already. He pulls her into a deep hug and Hannah’s world is turned upside down. Hannah’s phone rings. It’s the printer, calling to confirm what’s going on the wedding invitations. Even more annoyed at the cheaters. “The two of us will look to the same map and will walk through life together. Please be with us as we begin our journey.” Hannah watches Cody and Ivy walk away, his arm around Ivy. This is the correct wording, right? Hannah replies that it isn’t. They’ve picked different maps. She’s still stunned but decides to follow them.

She’s let down her bun as she steps in front of Cody’s car. He almost hits her. I don’t know who looks more shocked, Cody or Ivy. Wow, Hannah’s hair looks crazy. Hannah leans on the car hood and glares at them. She walks around to Ivy’s side and opens the door. Pull her by the hair! Even better – Hannah pulls Ivy out of the car by her scarf. As she yanks Ivy around by the scarf, she calls Ivy out on her games:

You did that on purpose, didn't you? You didn't answer his calls knowing he'd come find you out of desperation, right? You did that on purpose, so I'd see you two, right?

Hannah grabs Ivy’s shoulders and asks if Ivy thinks she’s won. Then she tells Ivy to have him. And I officially love Hannah now. Not going to try to keep the cheater, but cut her loses and kicks him to the curb. She calls Cody the trash she threw away and head butts Ivy. Cody has run up – but not interfered – and is shocked by the head butt. Ivy looks up at Hannah, nose bleeding. She starts freaking out at the nose bleed.

Hannah’s attention turns to the cheater. He says that it’s just a misunderstanding. Of course it is. She walks over and punches him in the gut. Should have aimed lower. She starts to slam his head into the car hood as she tells him that she thought he was superficial, ignorant and a lazy bum. But he’s a liar and a womanizer! She throws him on the ground next to Ivy.

Cheater Cody

Switch back to a stunned Hannah. Aw, it was all in her head. Boo! She snaps out of her thoughts and turns around as Cody’s car driven by. No, bust the man! Hannah slowly walks back to the bus stop and sits in a daze on the bus.

College graduate Hannah – wearing a graduation cap and gown and glasses –tells her that it's not her fault that her lover left. Hannah did nothing wrong. There's no reason for her to lose her self-esteem. She’s still an amazing woman. I love how her rational self is dressed as a college graduate. Definitely an embodiment of how you try to be logical in the face of overwhelming emotions.

Logic Hannah asks if Hannah thinks revenge will make her happy. Will it improve her self-esteem? And the rationality continues. Does she want to break up or does she want to give him another chance? Dump him! Does Hannah want to forgive him? As Logic Hannah fades, Hannah lets out a big breath and looks out the window, trying to answer those questions.

Over in Cody’s car, Ivy smiles smugly to herself as they hold hands. Then she puts back on her Oppa face. She notices that they’ve just crossed a bridge. She tells Oppa that he said they were going to drink some tea for the last time. Sure you are. Wow, he’s even deceiving himself. Cody tells her that she said she wanted to see the sea. Ivy asks if Oppa is still stalking her SNS. He’s so relentless. She pretends to be upset. Cody answers that he couldn’t contact Ivy and how could he live without at least doing that? Wow, that would be romantic if he wasn’t a cheating liar. Touched, Ivy agrees that they should go to the seaside.

They share a small smile. He brings her hand to his lips and kisses it. Again, would be sweet if he wasn’t a dog. Ivy says that since it’s the last time, she can do that much. Cody isn’t happy about being reminded that they’re ending it. She looks out the window and smiles to herself over how easily he’s manipulated.

Cut to a man in a red plaid shirt sleeping in the woods with a straw hat on his face. Let that be Alvin, please! Hannah walks up, pulling her suitcase behind her. Wow, she definitely has decided not to care about how she looks. Sloppy hair wrapped in a knot on the top of her head, oversized baggy sweats. She looks terrible. Hang in there, sweetie!

Hannah stops in front of a tree with H.mom’s picture on it. Wow, it’s been 10 months since the funeral and that picture looks really untouched. Hannah walks over; arms opened wide, and hug the picture and the tree trunk. She lovingly caresses the tree as she says ‘H.mom.’ That gets plaid shirt’s attention. Alvin sits up, pulling the hat off his face. He sees Hannah and immediately lies back down, replacing the hat on his face. Avoiding her, are you? Hannah doesn’t notice him and sit down at a bench nearby. She pulls out her phone.

Ivy is practically crowing as she tells Cody again that it’s the last time, so what could go wrong? Cody pouts. Annoying Oppa pleading. She leans over and pecks him on the cheek twice. He can’t help but laugh. He agrees that it's nice seeing the sea. Phone rings and navigation says that Hannah is calling. They look at each other. Ivy grabs the phone, an impish look on her face. She refuses to give Cody the phone. He tells her to stop, because it’s dangerous, and she answers the call. Pause and then Cody loudly tells Hannah that it's a little hard for him to take the call right now. Sure it is. And he’s stuttering.

Hannah tells him to just listen. Alvin is listening, too. She says that she’s come to see H.mom. Cody is a little worried that Hannah is visiting his mother but figures that she went to visit her mother’s grave. He tries to get off the phone, saying that he’ll call her later. She cuts him off declaring that there is no later! Split screen showing Ivy and Cody’s reactions to Hannah’s declaration. She’s came all the way to H.mom’s grave so that she can say this in front of H.mom.

She yells for him to shut up and listen! Alvin – who is also listening – cringes when she yells. His face says that he’s a little surprised at how angry she is to be that rude on the phone. Hannah declares that Cody lies whenever his mouth is open. She calls him a bastard. Ivy covers her mouth, shocked at Hannah’s crudeness and Cody can’t believe it either. Hannah declares that they’re through! At that declaration, Alvin has to take off his hat so he can hear well.

Cody has been looking at Ivy and not paying attention. She looks at the road and screams because they are about to crash into a parked car. Cody barely misses it. He silently screams and Ivy covers her mouth, realizing that Hannah must have heard her scream. Hannah asks why it had to be Ivy, of all people. Did their time together mean nothing to him? Alvin starts to try and slowly crawl away unseen by Hannah.

Hannah says that she’ll skip over several other comments since H.mom would be hurt if she heard Hannah talk like that. Alvin’s jeans leg gets caught on something. Hannah declares that she and Cody are finished. Alvin frantically tries to pull his pant leg free. Luckily, he’s behind a big mound of dirt, so Hannah doesn’t see him.

Cody tries to get off the phone. Hannah addresses Ivy. Ivy gasps – Hannah did hear her. Not that she didn't already see you in the car, but you don't know that. Hannah tells Ivy to listen well. From now on Ivy shouldn’t appear in front of her. If Ivy sees her, Ivy should avoid her. If they’re by some unfortunate situation stuck in the same space, Ivy better not looks at her or talks to her. Don’t smile in front of her. Don’t eat in front of her. Don't do anything!
