Waking up on a Sunday, “Ahh . . .” I streath. Walking over to the windows and opening the curtains. “Today is so bright. Maybe I’ll earn a little more money today.” I giggled at the thought of earning just a little more than every other day. “I should get ready to be able to earn more money.” I giggled agian.

After I was done with my morning routine, I went downstairs and cooked myself some good old breakfast. Maybe a few minutes later I sat down to my breakfast. I turned on the TV and I guess it wasn’t working. It was just glitching, that’s weird this never happens. Whatever, I still have to go to work.

When I was fully finished with every thing I needed to do in the house I headed out. My driver Mr. Zheng was already there to take me to work. I got in and he started driving.

There was a traffic jam in front. I looked at my watch. “I don’t have time for this. I’m gonna be late! Mr. Zheng could you please find another road or a shortcut to get there faster?” I asked him with my eyes still looking at the clock. I looked at him and he nodded.

We were on a shortcut but we were still too slow. “Mr. Zheng could you go just a bit faster? I’m going to be late for work.” He nodded and went double his speed. I was feeling Satisfied, but something unexpected happen.

There was a little girl crossing and Mr. Zheng stepped on the break making the car flip over the little girl that is now crouching. In a few seconds anyone could hear the big and loud crash, and at the same the time. I have died on the spot, oh poor me!

I had woken up in a nasty old place. I looked around the room and notice a wide opening. I walked over and saw a women washing clothes near a lake. Her clothing looked rough and ripped. I walked outside of the nasty place. I looked around and saw many unusual things. I then went closer to the women. I had accidentally stepped on some leaves and made the women looked at me.

“Mom?” I whispered in shock. “Al! Why are you up? Your still weak. Here I’ll take you back to rest.” The women said and got up to take me back inside the house. She laid me carefully on the bed and walked away, but I shouted “ Mom!” And she was frozen in place. She turned around. She smiled and so did I. “Silly, you have just been sick for only a few days and you have already forgotten that I’m your older sister?” She smiled and came closer. “Stay here until I finished washing the clothes alright? I’ll come and wake you up and help me find some food for tonight, if your well enough.” She smiled again and walked outside of the house. I then opened my mouth in shock.

How did . . . My mom . . . Become . . . My older . . . Sister?

I had fell asleep thinking the whole night. But I remember clearly that what mom looks like, it’s definitely mom. Have I mistaken, but I never had an older sister. There can’t be two people who look exactly the same, unless you have a twin. But, did mom have a twin. If she did then wouldn’t that person outside be my aunt? I’m so confused. Forget it.

As I woke up the next morning I saw the women, or should I say “older sister”? I don’t know. Oh well. She was half sleeping and half not sitting on the chair rocking back and forth.

I tried to sit up as quietly as I could so she wouldn’t wake up but curse those damn beds. They made the loudest out of the loudest noise I’ve ever heard. When I could fully sit up the women came running to me and said, “Al, careful. Your still sick.” She helped me up and went back over to where she was before and grabbed a bowl that was freshly made. “Here. Al, you should drink this. This will make you become healthier.” She said gently with a smile.”

Lady I know that this is medicine. I held half of the bowl and found out that it was hot, like really hot. Isn’t her hand burning. “Al, be careful. Hold on, I’ll blow it for you.” She then starts to blow out the hot steams. “Isn’t it hot?” I ask. She stared at me and then smile. “Of course not, I’ve had worse then this. Don’t worry about your older sister, this is nothing.” She said and went back to blowing out the steam and it soon went warm. “Here Al, drink it while it’s still warm.” She gave me the bowl and I held it. I looked at the bowl scared that it would be bitter and kept starring at it. “What are you waiting for?” She ask. I turned to look at her and gave her my puppy eyes. “Ohh, are you scared that it would be bitter?” She ask and I nodded. “Don’t worry, I know that you hated the taste of bitterness and so I added a bit of sugar in it.” She smile. I gave her the hugest smile and then took the biggest gulp of my life. “How do you like it?” She ask. I started blankly at her. “You lied to me!” I said and start to cry and throw up. “Al, you can’t act like a baby anymore. Your already 14. The age of becoming a palace maid already.” “F-fourteen?” I ask and looked at her. She nodded. “Yes Al, fourteen.” She answered me. What?! I’m fourteen?!!! Wait what? I didn’t even question where I was when I came here and I’m already being dragged to become a palace women? Hold on. Let me figure everything out first. So I died? Yes you died you idoit! Why else would you be here? Of course. Stop asking so many stupid questions. “Sister?” I ask and she nodded. “Could you please tell me a about our family tree.”

So basically, the women and I are the last two generation of Dou. A family that had traveled from place to place which is why our pockets are empty. Our grandmother unexpectedly died in the battle between the two biggest states when our family went trough the battle field to escape the war. Our little new born brother died after our mother stoped producing milk for him. Our mother was devastated and soon followed after our baby brother. When our father found out he also wanted to follow our mother and little brother but then thought of us and still kept living but after a few years he had gotten the plague and past away soon later.

Bai sighed and started at the ground. I think talking about this made her unhappy. “Ahh, Bai sister.” I ask. She looked at me and smiled. “Yes Al?” She ask. I shook my head then smiled at her. “Oh well. After a few days you’ll be going to the palace and will be working as a maid there.” She said.

Before I knew it I was already in front of the grand palace of Qin. “Alright, we’re here Al.” My older sister said. “Its going to be okay.” She said to me and held my hand. “Remember what I taught you.” I nodded. “If any noble ladies or maids mess with me stay put and don’t cause trouble.” I said and she nodded. “Wait, why? Wouldn’t I just get bullied?” I ask confused and dropped her hands. “Silly.” She said and grabbed my hand again. “If anyone bullies you, you still have to stay put so that you won’t harm yourself. If you ever want them to get what they deserve then let a justice higher rank be a witness and they will never bug you again.” I looked at her in shock. “Really?” I ask. She nodded. I never knew it could be that easy. “Alright. I’m ready!” I said with a bright smile.

Wow, it’s exactly like what Bai said . . . The palace is huge and big. I can smell the food all the way over here, ahh\~ *Growel Oops, that must be my stomach. Haha. When I entered the palace a lady in purple comes and takes me with her. “Here is the place. You will have to stay here with the other girls and get changed into these clothes.” The women in purple said and gave me the exact outfit but a different color, pink. When the girls finished they all sat around, stared, or talked a few words. “Umm, can someone help me? I think I tied a knot here and it’s, ummm please help.” I said to the ladies and one of them came looking inside the dressing room. “Haha, wow, I’ve never seen anyone wear clothes like this before.” She laughed. “Oh sorry, let me help you.” After a few minutes she finished untying the knots and had fully helped me put the clothes on properly.

“Thank you,” I pause. “Hua Mi,” she said. “My name is Hua Mi. You can call me sister Mi.” She smiles and held my hand. “Well, my name is Al.” “Listen up!” The women in purple say cutting off our conversation. “Hurry up. Is everyone ready?” She asks and everyone nodded. “You all have already know the basics?” The ladies nodded again. She then looked around the room and saw me, and our eyes met. It made me so nervous that I nearly fainted. “You.” She said pointing towards me. “Y-yes?” I say in respond and put my hand on my stomach and bow a 90 degree. “Lift your head.” I then did as she say and looked up at her. “You are very beautiful.” She say and I look into her eyes. “But you won’t be able to survive in this palace with a face like yours.” I then look down again showing my respect and in fear. “Since you won’t live long in this palace why don’t you come and work for me?” She ask. I then look at her in shock and went on my knees. “I dare not.” I say and she helped me up. “You don’t have to bow, I only gave you a recommendation.” She says and look me in the eye. I don’t know what it was about me but she thought that I had said yes and told me to change into a different clothing.

After everyone had left the room and I was in there alone, changeing my outfit. After I finished I got out of the room and there she was bowing to me. “Your highness.” She said and I flipped. “Wha-what did you call me?” I ask in shock. “Your... highness?” She says again. I was so taken aback and nearly slipped out of my soul. “Your highness, her majesty the Empress has ask me to take care of you in her stead.” I look at her and ask, “Her majesty?” She nodded. Am I now the Empress’s niece? I thought Bai was my sister? What is going on? “I think-“ I was cut off by the lady in purple and she said, “Your highness, it is time to practice for the primary technices.” I then look at her and stared at her hard. Is she trolling me right now? “What is your name?” I ask. “Replying to your highness, my name is Li Ying Yue. A court maid who works for her highness.” Li Ying Yue say and I repeatedly repeat her name inside of my head. I then saw the eurnch and other maids face while bowing. “Oo, I’m so sorry.” I say as I try to lift them up one by one, but none of them would budge. “Your highness, you haven’t told us to rise yet.” Ying Yue say and I instantly told them to rise scared that they might have hurt themselves while bowing for too long. They stood in their spots and made way for Ying Yue as she lead me to a very beautiful residence. As we enter inside their were maids bowing to me and Ying Yue. The grand garden was massive and full of so much lively things to do such as swings, kites, shadow plays and so much more. As Ying Yue open the door she said, “This is your very own personal chamber your highness.” I nodded and looked around the room. “This is beautiful Ying Yue.” I turn to her and held her arm. She then let go and bow to me begging her pardon and left me inside the grand room. I didn’t really gave much attention to that and ran around the room looking at other beautiful things such as dresses, cosmetics, and very well made items that must have cost thousands of dollars. Oops, not dollars but gold and silver.
