Our heroine, Natalie, who is in court facing a stalking charge, and the hero, Cairo, who is running hard toward the courthouse. When the charges are read, Natalie laughs like she can’t believe this is happening to her. Cairo reaches the courthouse and tries to quickly enter, but security stops him. Natalie laughs even more at the absolute ridiculousness of her circumstances as the judge asks her if she acknowledges that she’s been convicted of stalking. A sweating Cairo hands over his wallet and struggles to get his watch off.
Natalie answers the judge that she’s the crazy bitch. Judge looks up at her surprised. She must've been insane. Cairo tells the security guard that he’s sorry, but he’s in a hurry. He has to go testify for someone. The guard asks about his relationship with the defendant. Natalie’s got crazy stalker eyes going on as she declares that this is what she told that bastard… Zoom in on Cairo. Is he the bastard she’s talking about? He’s just swallowed hard. Shot of Natalie. Back to Cairo, who tells the guard that she’s his fiancée. Natalie says (what she told that jerk): “Let's get married.” Great way to set it up that she’s talking about him and calling him a bastard.
Cairo stumbles in the courtroom and Natalie seems surprised to see him there. He looks at her and smiles.
[ How to Break up in a Civil Way ]
Jump to a jubilant Natalie singing in a bubble bath, “Will you marry me?.” She sips some wine. She’s blowing up balloons and decorating with them as she sings about having children together and living happily ever after. It annoys me slightly that the soundtrack faintly has the song playing backup, since it’s not the same tempo as what she’s singing. It’s distracting. Natalie is going all out: flowers, candles, flower pedals, champagne. She gets perfectly coiffed. She checks herself out in the mirror, to make sure she looks perfect, and then wonders what’s taking her beloved so long.
Plastic Surgeon’s office. Phone buzzes on the desk. Cairo gets dressed for surgery. Nurse reports that the patient’s angle malar (show defines this as chin augmentation) surgery is ready to go. Surgery starts and Cairo gets shot in the face with blood. A nurse goes to pat his face off and he tells her it’s fine and keeps going. Glad that he’s not worried about contracting a disease that’s transmitted through the blood, but I guess this shows what intense focus Cairo has, not to be distracted by getting squirted in the face with blood, of all things..
Natalie lights the candles on the cake; they spell out I LOVE YOU (love is represented by a heart). All I keep thinking as I watch her preparations is, ‘Oh, Sweetie, you shouldn’t be doing this. The guy is supposed to be doing this. If he’s not the one doing it, he’s not the one feeling it and you’re setting yourself up to get your heart broken. Cairo returns to his office after surgery, still in his scrubs, and checks his phone. Natalie is looking at the lit candles when her phone buzzes. She asks where her love is. Cairo responds that he’s leaving now. As he checks out his hair in his mirror, he asks what his caller wanted so desperately to tell him. Natalie says that she wants him to see it with his own eyes.
Cairo climbs out of his car. He’s now wearing dark framed glasses. Hate them. He dials his phone and tells the person he’s there. Inside, he’s still on the phone and trying to find the person he’s talking to. A woman's hand goes up. Cairo mutters that his caller is not there and some stranger is waving and smiling at him. He smiles. Cairo realizes what’s going on. Angrily he says the caller’s name: Kelvin!
Elevator opens and a hysterically laughing Kelvin steps out. Wearing sunglasses even though he’s *indoors.* Kelvin apologizes to Cairo and says that Cairo knows his mom the best. How could he (Kelvin) turn down her request? Not appeased, Cairo asks where Kelvin is and Kelvin replies that he’s not far; he has plans at the same hotel. Kelvin removes his sunglasses, tells Cairo to have a good time and hangs up the phone without waiting for a response. He rings the room’s bell.
Natalie answers the door with a rose in between her teeth and calls Kelvin ‘Oppa.’ So this is who she was talking to. I only see bad things coming. Kelvin asks if she waited long. She nods and he growls at her playfully. She pulls him into the room by his ascot as he barks at her. He picks her up and spins her around, making kissing noises at him. He doesn’t notice the room until she tells him to look. When he does notice it, he drops her, shocked. His eyes pan the room: candles all over, balloons and more balloons, a PowerPoint of their relationship, roses, rose petals, the love cake. Kelvin is starting to freak out.
Natalie is oblivious. She picks up the love cake and calls out, “Surprise,” which appears above her head like the animation on Korean variety shows. Kelvin tries to not look like he’s freaking out and asks what all of the decorations and everything is for. Sweetly she asks him if he knows that today is. Kelvin asks, “Huh?” “Do you know what today is?” appears in animated, blinking letters over her head. Again she says it, but it’s slow and distorted. Kelvin blinks rapidly, clearing his throat, and asks if she thought that he’d forgotten.
Kelvin tries to guess. It's their 1st year anniversary. Nope, that was last week. He has no idea, so he asks what it is. Natalie steps up to him, still holding the cake in front of her. She declares that today is the last day they will spend here. Another ‘huh?’ face from Kelvin. She says they should stop meeting in the hotel. Sinking noise as Kelvin asks what she means. Natalie answers that instead of a hotel, they should fall asleep together and have breakfast together every day in a place of their own. Kelvin wipes his forehead nervously.
Close-up on Natalie’s lips as they say in slow motion that she and Kelvin should have breakfast together every day in a space of their own. Kelvin glances around desperately, looking for a bathroom… a balcony… Where can he escape? He abruptly blows out the candles, shocking Natalie. He declares that his stomach's been killing him, so he’ll go to the bathroom really quickly. Sorry. He runs for the bathroom as she calls out “Oppa!” in protest.
Blind date is sitting with Cairo. She looks uncomfortable and he looks bored out of his skull. Text arrives from Kelvin, begging Cairo to save him. Cairo reads it without even apologizing to his date. Another text where Kelvin declares that this girl must want to marry him! Cairo glances over at his date and replies that this girl wants the same from him. Date clears her throat and Cairo apologizes. He asks where he was in the conversation. Date smiles and replies that Cairo hasn’t said anything. As he pulls out a stick of gum, he declares that they should start now. She can ask him whatever she wants. She should take her time. Date agrees and looks a little nervous as she tries to think up conversation topics.
Date asks where he lives. Cairo absently drops his gum wrapper in his water as he replies that he lives in Gangnam. He adds that she wanted to see if he lived in a ritzy area, eh? She’s surprised at that implication. She starts to clarify, but a gum-chewing Cairo – wow, he is being really rude right now – adds that more specifically he lives in an apartment complex that his parents own. It's not huge but nice enough to live in alone. Date is starting to feel offended. As she should. He is being a real jerk. Cairo says that there are a few celebrities, too, and it’s super close to the subway. Date is confused by Cairo talking about the subway. Cairo adds that being near the subway doesn't mean much to him, since he has a car. Date smiles uncomfortably. Cairo picks up his water glass and tells her that she must've thought he might not have a car. He chuckles and tells her to ask the next question.
Natalie’s at the bathroom door, asking if Kelvin is ok? Is it indigestion? A profusely sweating Kelvin declares that he’ll be out soon. He texts Cairo that he’s locked in the bathroom! Cairo picks up his phone again without excusing himself – wow, he’s being disrespectful – and tells Kelvin to just tell Natalie that he doesn’t want to get married and come out of the bathroom. Kelvin furiously responds, asking how he could just dump her like that? He can’t just say anything to a girl, like Cairo does.
Natalie is understandably worried. She starts knocking on the door and trying to get Kelvin to respond. He texts that she’s started to knock on the door! He begs Cairo to get him out of there! Natalie continues to knock.
Date tries to pleasantly persevere in the conversation. She says that because he’s a plastic surgeon, he must meet a lot of pretty girls. Looking up from the phone, Cairo replies that she means girls who want to be pretty. Date blinks, because that’s not what she’s saying. Cairo declares dramatically that they come with big bucks. He tells her that if she’s wondering if his practice is successful… yes it is. He has a house, car and a hospital. Nice, eh? Date chuckles bitterly at the jerk she’s out on a date with. Cairo sighs and declares that he’s done and it’s her turn. Date wonders how to respond to that.
Cairo says – and texts – asking what “you” can give him. Date chuckles again and asks him, “Excuse me?” Kelvin replies that Cairo should help since they’re buddies! Cairo replies that Kelvin means that they are landlord and tenant. Kelvin mutters how Cairo’s a funny guy. He texts back that his mom is the landlady not him!
Date has had enough of Cairo’s rudeness. She takes out her ponytail and fluffs her hair. She asks him what he’s doing right now. He looks around awkwardly and laughs, saying that this is what an ideal marriage is… what he has, she doesn’t and what she has, he doesn’t. She rolls her eyes as he says that it’s so they can help and rely on each other. Cairo looks back at his phone, where Kelvin has promised a rent freeze for 2 years! Date asks Cairo how he can ignore her like this! He’s been looking at his cell phone the whole time.
Cairo replies that his texting is just that there’s someone waiting for him in a room right now. He’s contemplating whether to go up or not. He’ll make his decision after he hears what she has to offer. Date’s done. She tells him that he’s crazy! Text saying that the rent freeze will be 3 years. Quickly Cairo types a deal and sets down his phone. Just as quickly, he yanks off his glasses and braces for the water that Date flings in his face. Date stands up and pours his glass of water over his head. She walks off. Cairo sighs and rubs the water out of his hair.
Upstairs, Cairo rings the bell. Natalie asks if Kelvin ordered room service, but he doesn’t answer. She gets the door, where a wet Cairo is standing. They’ve never met, so Cairo says that it’s nice to meet her. He introduces himself as Kelvin's friend, Cairo. He just walks in and starts kicking balloons. A flustered Natalie can’t say anything. Cairo finds the bathroom and knocks. Kelvin opens the door and Cairo pulls him out, saying he needs to use it. Natalie tries to get Kelvin to control his friend. She asks why Cairo showed up like that. Cairo answers for Kelvin, saying that it happens after every blind date. Water showers… coffee showers… goodbye cocktail showers. Natalie wonders why and Cairo guesses that they just don’t like him. Kelvin suppresses a laugh.
Cairo declares that he doesn’t think he belongs there either, as he pushes in between Natalie and Kelvin to separate them. He starts messing with her decorations as he asks whether he’s interrupting. Natalie protests that honestly, they were in the middle of an important moment. Cairo acts like that’s news and starts to leave. Kelvin grabs him and says that he can’t let Cairo leave like that. He cares too much about Cairo to send him off like that. Cairo responds, asking if that’s why Kelvin set him up with just any girl? He painfully twists Kelvin’s arm as he says that he said no. Another painful squeeze as Cairo adds that he gets water showers, coffee showers, and Kelvin has now embarrassed his mom.
Kelvin quickly apologizes and says that he’ll buy them some drinks. He puts his arm around Cairo and starts to leave. Natalie quickly stops him, whining about her? Cairo agrees. How could he leave a lady there alone? Natalie smacks at Kelvin to control his friend as Cairo walks back into the hotel room. Cairo declares that there’s liquor in there, too. He grabs the champagne she’s set out. She runs over and begs him, rubbing her hands together, for him not to open it. He does anyway. Natalie is horrified.
Behind her Kelvin is waving his towel, dancing with joy over how Cairo is ruining the evening. Cairo pours a glass and smiles as he asks Natalie if they should drink? She’s on the verge of losing it, but she keeps in control and she starts to protest. Cairo interrupts her to tell her that she’s the first girl Kelvin’s introduced him to. Kelvin stops dancing and glares at Cairo, but smiles and nods when Natalie looks to see if it’s true. Cairo raises his glass and says that they look cute together. Natalie smiles, agreeing.
Cairo reaches over and scoops out a huge fingerful of icing from the cake. He stuffs it in his mouth as Natalie starts to protest that that’s just too much! Kelvin celebrates Cairo scoring again in ruining the evening. She frantically grabs the cake and tries to fix its decorations. Cairo apologizes and says that his blood sugar dropped and he’s dizzy. He asks where the bed is. Kelvin points to the bed with his thumb, not saying a word. Cairo heads there, with Natalie protesting after him. Kelvin dances in celebration as he follows after them.
Cairo reaches the bed and blows out the candles. Natalie screams that he can’t go there and shoves him backward. Cairo falls backward and pretends like she smacked him in the nose. Kelvin immediately starts to help his friend. Cairo mutters that he must've been interrupting. Kelvin, holding Cairo up, tells him that he’s not interrupting. Cairo declares that he’ll get going and staggers out toward the door. Kelvin chases after him (with Natalie chasing after them both) and asks Cairo if he can drive like that. Cairo replies that he doesn’t know and he might just crash into a guardrail! He’s quite dramatic.
Cairo tells them to have a good time and leaves. Kelvin declares that he better take Cairo home. Natalie grabs his arm and starts to protest. Kelvin looks insulted as he asks her if she’s going to make him into a lovesick fool that disuses his friends? She protests. He clucks at her that he’s disappointed and storms off. She can’t see his face saying, “Yes!” as he leaves.
As they walk away, Cairo tells Kelvin to stop looking back at the room. He asks if Kelvin has any regrets over what’s just happened. Kelvin replies that he’s scared she might come after them. Nice. I don't like him anymore. Even if he is kind of funny. Cairo tells him to end it with Natalie cleanly. Kelvin declares that he’ll end it in a civil way.
[ How to Break up in a Civil Way: Missing In Action ]
Cairo begins swimming, wearing swimmer goggles. Kelvin is sitting underwater, watching all the women swim by, enjoying his ogling. Natalie sits in the locker room at work, worried about what’s happened with Kelvin. Kelvin’s voiceover announces that for the first few days, she'll be anxious. She’ll wonder if there’s anything wrong. Natalie sighs and wonders how she’s going to propose to Kelvin next time. A trip, maybe? She claps her hands together, because it’s the perfect idea! Some place like an island where there are no distractions! She giggles with delight and claps her hands. Oh, Natalie, no. What are you doing? Even if I didn't know what Kelvin was doing, I would still be saying 'no.'
Kelvin and Cairo are in bathrobes by the pool. Kelvin declares that Natalie will be hunting through his SNS right about now, so he’ll write in his bio that "Love…always changes." Cairo looks at Kelvin and shakes his head, especially when Kelvin starts scouting out a new girl.
Natalie is at work, waiting for a customer with her friend, Zoe. She works in the accessories department. Natalie calls Kelvin but he doesn’t answer. She frowns and says that it’s strange because he’s not answering his cell. Zoe tells her to check his SNS. Natalie starts to call again and Zoe gasps because Natalie’s still using a dumb phone!
Kelvin declares that if he ignores Natalie for a while, she'll stop calling. They’re at a restaurant, drinking. Cairo asks if Natalie’s still calling Kelvin all night. He replies that it's the 3rd day. It's tough but it should be all good now. Kelvin stretches and turns on his phone. There’s *300 missed calls and 102 new text messages.* Wow, girl, that’s way too much. Wow. As he’s looking at the phone, Natalie calls. He quickly rips the battery out of his phone and sucks down his wine as he says that he just has to hang on for a few more days. Cairo looks at him like he’s nuts.
Natalie’s calling again and getting his voicemail. Zoe asks if she mentioned marriage. Natalie replies that she was just about to when he had to use the bathroom. Zoe tells her that he caught on to what she was going to do. Natalie can’t believe that. She protests that Kelvin’s upset that she mistreated his friend. Zoe asks her how she’s being so dim. It's a disappearing breakup. Zoe asks her how long it’s been since she’s talked to him. Natalie mumbles that it’s been about a week. Zoe sighs and declares that it’s over. Natalie doesn’t want to believe it. But it is. It totally is.
At his French restaurant – which I will be calling Bon Café even though I think it's called Bon Restaurant – Kelvin declares to Cairo that Natalie will totally get it after a week. Girls these days are smart. They get the idea and get over it. The pair are sitting on the balcony. Cairo glances out into the street and asks if Natalie’s come looking for Kelvin. She hasn’t. Cairo asks Kelvin if she hasn’t all. Nope. He motions with his head toward the street and asks who the girl is coming up the street. Kelvin looks and it’s Natalie on her bike. He silently screams. Cairo stands and announces that he’s going to get going. Kelvin grabs Cairo’s arm and asks if Cairo forgot the 3-year rent freeze. Cairo protests that he already saved Kelvin from the hotel. Kelvin starts to beg. Cairo protests. Kelvin scurries to hide behind the counter.
Natalie enters the restaurant. One of the waiters, Rocco approaches her. He’s familiar with who she is and smiles when she comes in. They bow greetings to each other. She asks if Kelvin is there. Rocco is surprised she’s asked for the boss. When Natalie is confused, he chuckles and replies that everyone comes there to see him. Because he’s so cute, of course. And I’m not arguing. He is really cute with a great smile. Natalie asks if Kelvin is okay. Rocco answers that Kelvin should be fine. He doesn’t do anything but comes by the restaurant often. Rocco says that last part for Kelvin’s benefit, to tease him. It almost works, with Kelvin almost coming out from where he’s hiding, but he catches himself at the last minute. Rocco glances over at where Kelvin is hiding and smiles.
Natalie looks over at the hiding place, too, and is about to see Kelvin when Cairo steps in her eyeliner, ordering a grapefruit juice to go. Rocco heads to get it, but not before smiling down at his boss. Natalie recognizes Cairo as the guy from the hotel. She apologizes about that day (their altercation) but he tells her to hold on because he has a phone call. It’s his aunt. She says that Cairo’s Mom is upset over how the only grandson of the family keeps making trouble on his blind dates. It's humiliating the family!
Natalie keeps looking around for Kelvin as Cairo’s on the phone. Cairo mutters to Aunt that this is why he’s going to stop going on blind dates! Aunt replies that this time it was really bad since it was a close family friend of Kelvin's mom. He needs to apologies to her the next time he sees her. Natalie spots Kelvin in the mirror, hiding behind the counter. She starts to walk toward him, but Cairo steps forward to block her as he tells Aunt that Kelvin should apologies to him! Kelvin makes a face as he’s almost caught. Rocco laughs.
Cairo declares that he hates dealing with gold diggers; they're the worst. Natalie nods in agreement over that one. Which says that she’s not one. Aunt gives him a jab about the girls he frequents hotels with – are they any better? He remembers that he gave Date the impression that he was meeting someone. He replies that that girl can't wait to get married either. Scornfully, he looks at Natalie as he says that she was so desperate to get married that day. She asks if he’s talking about her. He tells her that he means his blind date. But we know he’s talking about Natalie. She apologizes for eavesdropping and he smiles politely, with just a hint of sarcasm.
Aunt continues that Cairo keeps ruining the blind dates, so this next time the family will be there, too, so he can't mess it up. Cairo drops his head, frustrated and put-upon. Exasperated, he tells Aunt, please, and says that he won't get married. She replies that he shouldn’t even think of trying to run away. She’s already there to get him. This gets Cairo’s attention. Now? Aunt tells him to cancel his evening appointments; he’s coming with them. Cairo repeats ‘them?’ but Aunt hangs up the phone. We see that he’s in the car with Cairo’s mom, who is wearing a traditional dress. Mom’s face is blank, but she doesn’t look happy. How do they know where Cairo is right now?
Cairo’s forgotten all about covering for Kelvin. He has to get out of there before Mom arrives. Natalie grabs his arm, stopping him from leaving. Quickly, still distracted, he asks her if she has something to say to him. She tells him that she can't reach Kelvin. She understands a guy's friendship, but she really needed to tell him something important. Cairo shoves her hands off of him and tells her to stop it. She’s pathetic. She doesn’t know what he means. He turns around and tells her that it's all over. As she reels from that, he rushes out of the restaurant.
[ How to Break up in a Civil Way: Saying Goodbye Through a 3rd Party ]
Natalie hurries after him, asking him what he means. He looks at her and asks how she doesn’t get it. It’s Over! He emphasizes ‘over’ with his arms in a caput motion. She starts to ask if Kelvin really said that, grabbing at his arm. He utters an ‘Aish!’ and snaps at her, asking if he has to spell it out for her. She scrambles after him. He yells at her that Kelvin’s obviously avoiding her. If he doesn't answer the phone, he doesn't want to talk. If he doesn't want to meet, then he doesn't want to meet! Cairo climbs into his car, groaning about how clueless she is.
Natalie starts to pound on the glass of the driver’s window. She wants an explanation. He tries to drive off but she steps in front of his car, blocking him. He stops, a little freaked out that he almost hit her with his car. She climbs into the passenger side of the car. Cairo can’t understand why she’s in his car and yells at her to get out! She yells back asking him how he can run off without explaining what he said! Cairo groans, exasperated and cranes his neck to look for his aunt’s car. He mutters that he’s going insane. Natalie asks what the reason is, that Kelvin is breaking up with her.
Cairo tries counting. One. She’s not listening. She asks if it’s because she didn’t want him to leave the hotel? How could he want to break up because of that? Cairo replies that of course it’s not because of that. Two. Natalie asks if it’s because there’s another girl. Cairo retorts that other girls have higher standards than she does. Ouch! Three! Stricken at the thought, she asks if Kelvin’s sick. Cairo laughs with disbelief. Is she really ignoring the obvious? He yells that Kelvin ran away because she wanted marriage! He climbs out of the car. She sits, stunned and sad.
Mom and Aunt arrive. Aunt spots Cairo as he comes around the car and opens the door to tell Natalie to get out. Natalie has started crying. Not sloppy crying, but the crying you do when you’re stunned and the tears fall down your cheeks without you realizing. It’s sinking in: Kelvin ran away because she wanted marriage. Cairo yanks her out of the car. She still doesn’t want to believe it. Sweetie, listen to him, please! Trying to be in denial, she protests that it’s just what he thinks. She needs to hear it from Kelvin!
Aunt’s going to get out of the car, but Mom tells her to wait. She’s watching their conversation and from where she’s standing, it looks like the pair know each other well. Like dating. Cairo sighs with frustration and remarks that he’s never pitied Kelvin before now, but what guy wouldn't run away from such a clingy girl? She has enough sense to be a little offended with how he’s acting. She asks him to repeat what he said. Cairo sighs and says that he’ll explain so the slowest person could understand. He’s just a little condescending here. Just like Natalie’s after Kelvin's money, he wanted her pretty face and body, ok? She can’t speak. She just blinks at him and cries, she’s so offended.
Rocco arrives with Cairo’s grapefruit juice. Natalie grabs it, rips off the lid and throws it in Cairo’s face. Which he wasn’t expecting at all, so it hurt twice as much. Especially because it’s a citrus drink. Ouch. But it’s deserved! Aunt and Mom wince as they watch. Cairo’s choking on the juice. It went up his nose. Livid, she asks how he dares to say that about her feelings for Kelvin! He starts to yell back but she cuts him off, yelling that it wasn't Kelvin's money! Cairo stops, stunned. Natalie is heartbroken and declares that she… loved him. The tears rolled down her face. She closes her eyes to catch her breath and slowly walks away. Cairo is affected by it. He can’t believe that she wasn’t a Candy girl. He and Rocco watch Natalie slowly walk away, sobbing. Cairo sighs and wipes off his face with his hand. He knows he just broke this girl’s sincere heart. Something Kelvin should have had the nerve to do himself.
Aunt asks about how Cairo got yet another shower. Aunt mentions Cairo talking about a girl sincerely wanting marriage. Is she the girl he went to the hotel with? A girl who wants to get married? Mom looks back at Cairo, who’s still frustrated. I think Mom’s wheels are turning… uh-oh!
Cairo goes to work and changes his clothes. He throws his shirt across the room in frustration. Kelvin appears and meekly says Cairo’s name. Cairo sighs, not in the mood – especially because of what just happened – and tells Kelvin to get out. Kelvin pouts with his index finger in his mouth – basically making fun of Cairo. Cairo picks up something to throw at Kelvin so Kelvin runs. Cairo starts to button his spare shirt and says to himself in the mirror that he feels like crap. Breaking a sincere heart will do that. And Kelvin’s such a jerk because he doesn’t get it.
Natalie slowly walks as she pushes her bike. She’s in a daze. She stops and sighs, trying not to break down. She cries because she can’t hold it in. She pulls out her phone and texts Kelvin, saying that Cairo told her something weird. She asks what’s Cairo’s problem. What did he mean? It's not true is it? It's not true right? I hate that she’s so pathetic right now. That’s one thing I like about her, she’s really loyal!
Aunt and Mom pull up beside Natalie. Natalie doesn’t notice until Mom gets out of the car and gets her attention. She tells Natalie that her son must be giving her a hard time. Mom is smiling kindly as she asks if Natalie was at the hotel with him, eh? Natalie thinks Mom is talking about Kelvin. She asks if Mom is “his” mom. Mom nods. Natalie gives her a deep respectful bow and introduces herself. Natalie remarks that she didn’t think she would meet Mom like this. Mom replies that it’s the only way they could've met. Wow, she knows her son, if her son had a secret girlfriend. Mom asks if her son is running away right now. She must want to get married. Mom smiles and tells Natalie to come to their house tomorrow evening. She shouldn’t worry about upsetting him; she’s the one inviting her. Aw.
Kelvin – the jerk – updates his SMS status to read, “A New Start.” He smiles. He’s at Cairo’s practice. Cairo walks by and smacks him on the back of the head with his clipboard. Yes! Deserved! Kelvin smiles and asks if Cairo feels better now. At least Kelvin knows that it's deserved. Angrily, Cairo tells Kelvin to clean up his own poop next time. Heh. Kelvin smarms an apology; he never thought she'd be so clingy. Cairo throws down the clipboard in frustration and sighs.
After a moment Cairo asks Kelvin what Natalie was to him (how he felt about her). Not looking up from his phone, Kelvin replies that she was just a girl, of course. What else would she be? She seemed different at first. But after a while, getting to know her, she was no different than any other girl. Cairo takes a breath. He doesn’t seem to really like Kelvin’s answer. Cairo replies that Natalie seemed to be sincere. Kelvin sighs and rolls his eyes. She's so sincere it's too much! Another eye roll. Cairo looks away, almost like he wishes he could find a sincere girl who wasn’t after his money. Kelvin thanks Cairo again; because of Cairo, he can have a new start. Kelvin gives him the ‘OK’ hand signal and clicks his tongue. Cairo starts to hit Kelvin again with his clipboard, but Kelvin protests for Cairo to stop.
Fabulous women enter Cairo’s practice. At least that’s what the music says. She’s wearing sunglasses inside. I guess that means she’s fabulous. Everyone turns to look at her and Kelvin’s mouth drops. Cairo glances her direction and then goes back to looking over the chart he’s carrying. Fabulous women – who the cast list says is Isla – is there for an appointment. Kelvin gawks after her, declaring that his destiny is calling. Cairo glances at Isla and asks if she's pretty. Like she just looks ordinary to him. Heh. Kelvin declares that he hates church but she makes him believe in God. That is God's masterpiece! Cairo replies that she’s *his* masterpiece. Heh.
Kelvin tells his brother to set him up with her. Cairo replies that Kelvin already knows her. Kelvin’s shocked. Does he know this goddess? Isla appears, wearing a robe. Indifferently, Cairo asks if she’s changed her clothes already. She snarks that she didn't have much on to begin with. Kelvin recognizes her now, but he can’t say anything. He just sits there pointing at her with his mouth hanging wide open. Cairo puts on his glasses and they go off for their appointment. As Cairo walks by Kelvin, he gives him another whack on the head. Watching them go, Kelvin mutters to himself, shocked that they’re still dating. So this is Cairo’s girlfriend? Or, I guess, ex-girlfriend.
Cairo dispassionately is looking at the work he’s done on Isla’s chest. She asks him if touch ups will be necessary – almost as if she’s trying to get a response out of him. He replies, all business, that they won’t be if she’s satisfied. Even though the exam is done and the nurse has been dismissed, she’s still holding her robe open. Isla remarks that she doesn’t like her chest size and asks what Cairo thinks… Cairo gets up off his stool as he says that big breasts are not trendy anymore. Her current size is proportionate to her body. So it wasn’t before? Nevermind. They move to Cairo’s desk. It’s still throwing me that they’re spelling his name in English Cairo. Cairo declares her breasts a masterpiece.
Isla tells him that his skills are good...but it’s too bad he doesn't have better equipment. She tells him to come to work at her hospital. Where they have that fancy equipment. Not even looking up from her paperwork, he asks why she just didn’t get her job done at her state-of-the-art hospital, then. She replies that she couldn't perform surgery on herself and he's the second best surgeon she knows. Next to her, of course. Not buttering him up at all. She doesn’t want to get back together, either. No, not at all. Cairo replies that he’s sure there's a long line of applicants at her hospital. She replies that he told her to get a better guy than him... 3 years ago. Cairo doesn’t remember saying that. She replies that maybe it was some other guy. She leaves to go change. But given his current state of mind, he’s a little bothered that he said that to her.
Natalie is out at a bar, calling Kelvin again. Oh, no, she’s drunk dialing! She asks him if he’s really going to be like this. If he keeps this up... she could get back at him…with his mom. She slaps her phone shut and takes another swig of her drink.
Flashback on their relationship. Kelvin stops her from drinking, telling her that she’ll get drunk. She replies that that's what liquor is for. She starts to go to the bathroom, but falls off her stool. Kelvin catches her. They look at each other. He tells her that he’s trying to control himself but she’s not helping him. He leans and they kiss. It’s a nice, sweet moment.
Switch to… Natalie stuffing her mouth full of lettuce. Kelvin coos over her eating. Smiling very cutesy-like, Kelvin declares that he hates girls who eat like birds. He loves the way she eats… his piglet! Natalie smiles and declares that she eats to get full! Kelvin makes her another wrap to eat. They’re totally cutesy as she eats, with him making cute noises.
Natalie's feet are killing her from the high heels that she has to wear for work. Kelvin appears and gives her some comfortable shoes. They might even be his. They are his. She asks him what he’s going to wear. He declares that he’ll wear her shoes and starts dancing around wearing them. Fade to now, her sitting in the same place, alone. She starts to cry again as she tells herself that he still cared about her.
Zoe arrives and tells Natalie that she needs to figure things out with Kelvin’s mom. Even though we know it’s actually Cairo’s Mom. Natalie doesn’t want to. Zoe argues that if she wants to get married, the parents will become more important. If the parents make the decision, he'll have to obey them. Natalie responds that she doesn’t want that kind of marriage. Zoe asks if Natalie has any regrets. Natalie declares she doesn’t. She doesn’t need a jerk like him.
Natalie nicely dressed, carrying a cake in a box, walking up to Kelvin’s house. For that dinner that Cairo’s Mom invited her to. Except she thinks it was Kelvin’s mom. Once she’s there, she argues with herself about whether or not she should be there. Anyway his mom invited her. No, it's over. It's useless. But his mom invited her. But this is pathetic. No! Kelvin’s mother arrives. She asks who Natalie is and why she’s lurking around her house? Natalie says that she was invited. K.MOM wants to know by whom. Natalie replies that it was Kelvin's mom and K.MOM is surprised. She never invited Natalie. Natalie doesn’t get it, that she’s made a mistake.
Natalie smiles, chuckles, and waves to K.MOM, saying that it wasn’t her who gave the invitation, but Kelvin's mom. Cairo drives up to the house. K.MOM treats Natalie like she’s stupid as K.MOM declares that she's Kelvin's mom. Cairo wonders what’s going on. He mutters to himself about how stubborn she is. K.MOM gets out of the car and asks if Natalie’s her… the girl that Kelvin politely tried to break up with and she keeps clinging to him. She’s the one that's been tormenting Kelvin, isn’t she? Polite breaking up? Of course he would tell his mother that. He’s been anything but polite. Natalie starts to reply when K.MOM declares that Natalie’s been stalking Kelvin.
Natalie says that she was invited. She starts to say something about her relationship with Kelvin when K.MOM cuts her off and says that Natalie got drunk and tried to get Kelvin into bed. Natalie can’t believe that that’s what Kelvin said. I can't either. He's even more of a puts than I thought he was. Cairo, who’s heard the whole exchange, sighs. Because his friend is being a jerk to this girl who is actually a nice person. K.MOM goes on to tell Natalie that she heard Natalie’s really greedy, including how she eats. K.MOM’s face is full of scorn, hurting Natalie more. K.MOM continues how she heard about the big party Natalie threw with the hotel room and a cake. Does Natalie know how surprised K.MOM’s poor boy was?!
Natalie is Dandled, embarrassed. She asked if the jerk really said that?! K.MOM takes offence at how Natalie called her son a jerk. K.MOM grabs the cake box and hurls it to the ground. The cake splatters on the road. K.MOM scornfully tells Natalie that Kelvin tried to be considerate of Natalie so that she would save face, but it’s time Natalie gave up. How dare Natalie come to her house? How impolite. Natalie repeats that: she’s impolite? What about the jerk who just avoids someone he dated for a whole year? He's hiding behind his friend and mom. Is that being polite?!
K.MOM’s about to get physical again. Cairo decides to get out of his car. Natalie declares that she understands now what that jerk is up to. She just wants to hear from the jerk himself. K.MOM should tell him to say goodbye himself and tell him to act civilly, at least on their last day. K.MOM sputters and Natalie walks away. She happens to walk in Cairo’s direction, so she stops when she sees him. They look at each other. Cairo’s face says that he feels bad for her. They don’t say anything to each other. K.MOM sees Cairo and is so happy to see him! K.MOM asks why Cairo’s there, sugary sweet to him. Cairo says that he came to apologize about the blind date. Natalie begins walking again, with Cairo looking behind him as she goes. He sighs.
At Cairo’s family's house, Mom is sitting with Dad, Aunt, and Grandma, with dinner on the table. They are waiting for Cairo and Natalie to arrive. Aunt wants Grandma to give her the green light to eat, but Grandma tells her to wait. Aunt asks Mom if she can call Cairo. Mom says not to. Dad sighs and says that he’s going to his office to read some papers. Grandma mutters at him how it looks like he won’t be home tonight, either. Dad apologizes and says they don’t need to see him out. Mom goes after him anyway. Grandma mutters that Cairo hasn't come home for 3 years. Why would his girlfriend come there? Aunt replies that Mom’s mind is set. The girl will come. Grandma mutters that she’s starving and eats one of the shrimp.
Outside, Mom walks Dad out, giving him his briefcase. He smiles, takes it, gets in his car and waves as he drives away. Mom pulls out her phone and asks if she’s reached the real estate agency. All does not feel right in this relationship.
Fried Chicken Stand. I'm going to call it the Chicken Shack. Natalie’s parents don’t speak to one another. Dad writes on a board his questions and Mom texts him back. Dad wants to know where Natalie is. Mom doesn’t know. When is she coming? Don’t know. Ask her. Mom tells him he should. But Natalie arrives. She asks them if they have to act like this. Mom pulls Natalie aside and asks when she’s going to bring Kelvin by. Natalie said she'd get married. Is it because his family doesn't like that their family sells liquor? Natalie protests that that’s not it. Mom declares that she wouldn't want a beer-selling daughter-in-law either. She should tell her Dad to close this dang place. Dad replies, to Natalie, of course, that business is business. Natalie needs to tell her mom not to beg for a restaurant. They snipe back and forth at each other some more.
Finally Natalie can’t take it anymore. She yells at them to stop and to face each other when they fight! They should throw the TV and break flowerpots like before! At least they were like a real couple then. Natalie gets a text message. She reads it, slaps her phone shut, grabs a beer from the fridge and chugs it down. Her parents yell at her but she ignores them. When the beer is done, she leaves the restaurant without a word. Her parents start to ask each other what’s going on, but then remember that they’re not talking to each other.
[ How to Break up in a Civil Way : Text Messaging ]
Natalie saw: a text from Kelvin that says:
Thanks.
Sorry.
Be happy.
Kelvin looks at the text and sighs. He is really making me struggle. What a chicken! Cairo arrives at his restaurant. It looks like Isla is waiting to have dinner with him, because he notices her when she waves and tells her to hold on a second. He gets Kelvin’s attention and tells Kelvin that they need to talk. Kelvin thinks it’s about the scene at his house; he tells Cairo that he heard all about what happened from K.MOM. Cairo tells him that he needs to meet with Natalie. He should say goodbye to her directly. Because Isla’s at the next table, she can’t help but overhear.
Kelvin asks Cairo why he looks so serious? He shouldn’t worry. Natalie won't bother him anymore. And she’s not going to ever show up again. Kelvin says that he ended it for good this time. There’s a crash. It’s a drunk Natalie stumbling through the door. She sees Kelvin and looks at him with crazy eyes. I'm not kidding. Crazy eyes. Kelvin sees her and is horrified. He’s actually going to have to face her and feel her wrath instead of running and hiding! Cairo sees and his face says that he knows something bad’s coming.
Rocco approaches Natalie and asks if she came to see him this time, eh? She couldn't have come for Kelvin again. Aw, he’s being nice. She grabs the beer he has on his tray and chugs the whole thing. Cairo sighs because it’s about to get messy. Kelvin tries to look like he’s happy to see Natalie and gives her a smile and a tiny wave. She stumbles and walks toward Kelvin, pointing the bottle in his direction. Kelvin backs away, telling her to hold on and not come any closer. Rocco remarks to himself that things are getting interesting. Kelvin keeps backing away with Natalie stumbling after him, asking where he’s going.
Natalie slurs that she finally gets to see Kelvin. She asks why he didn’t call her. Kelvin asks if she didn’t see his text? She starts laughing and clapping her hands at the idea that he sent her a text. She pulls out her phone and reads the pathetic blow-off text out loud. Cairo sighs because Kelvin is lame. He can’t do anything but watch. Natalie slurs at Kelvin his text: that he’s grateful for the past. He’s sorry for being a jerk... but they should end it. And lastly… he doesn’t want her to come back a loser. Kelvin can only smile uncomfortably.
Natalie declares that she might be slow but she knows this much. Kelvin smiles and starts snapping in Cairo’s direction, telling Cairo to get over there and help him! Cairo does nothing. She pokes his chest with the bottle and tells him that Kelvin made a fool of her with that text. He thinks she doesn't know? He tells her to put down the weapon. She starts to scream at him. The past where she loved him! The present where she’s so hurt and the future she dreamt of with him! How can he throw it all in the trash with a single text? She gets so angry, she goes to hit him, with the hand holding the bottle which she forgot she was holding. Kelvin ducks, but Cairo steps up and stops her hand.
Kelvin’s cowering on the floor, screaming. No one else says anything. When Kelvin realises that Cairo has stepped in, he scrambles downstairs where he calls the police and tells them that he’s being threatened by a stalker. They need to save him. He’ll die! And I now want to hit him with a beer bottle. This is beyond shady.
Natalie looks at the person holding her wrist. Him again? Cairo declares that he’s helping her. She should be grateful. She shouts in his face, asking what? Is he afraid that she’ll be super pathetic? He sneers at that one. Because right now she's being totally pathetic. She declares that she knows how pitiful she is right now. But what else can she do? She can't do breakups in a cool, civil way like him and Kelvin! She needs to face Kelvin even if it's pathetic! She just needs to see that bastard right now! She’s shrieking and sobbing by the end of it. Rocco and Isla feel bad for her. Because now everyone in the restaurant is watching. So does Cairo. He lets go of her wrist and tells her to go ahead. She walks after where Kelvin went. Cairo decides to go after her.
Kelvin sees her coming and goes and hides in the bathroom. Natalie starts pounding on the door with the bottle, telling him to come out. She shrieks at him that if he wants to end it with her, he needs to look her in the eyes and tell her to go away with his own mouth. Then she'll go away, adding that he’s a bastard! Kelvin cowers behind the door. Cairo tries to tell her to wait and not do this now. He grabs her wrist. She wrenches it free, accidentally hitting him in the face with the bottle. He staggers backward, holding his face. Isla and Rocco have come downstairs and rush to see if he’s okay. Cairo looks at his hand and his nose is bleeding.
Natalie is clueless that she hit Cairo with the bottle. She’s still pounding on the door, screaming at Kelvin. Is it so hard to say goodbye to her face? Kelvin’s still cowering in the bathroom. Natalie says that she thinks she could understand if she saw his face, why and how it's become like this. She says she could understand, if she saw his eyes. She whimpered now. They were both in love. How can he want to break up like this?
Kelvin calls the police back and tells them to hurry. He’s scared to death. Because he is a Weasley coward. She’s able to get the door open. Kelvin stumbles backward and cowers on the floor. Seeing his face, Natalie gets it. Who he is. She drops the bottle. Emotionally drained, she says that now she understands since she sees his face. The tears start falling as she says that she sees now: she was the only one in love. All by herself. Kelvin actually looks like he finally gets what he’s been doing. Rocco and Cairo feel badly for her. More tears fall as she stands there.
Police station. Cairo sits, with tissue stuffed up both his nostrils from the nose bleed. Heh. Natalie sits next to him, falling asleep after the booze and a hard evening. The cop slaps the desk to get her attention and asks why she did what she did. She replies that she just missed him! Cairo looks like he feels bad for her. Natalie declares that she loved Kelvin. She wanted to see him! Is it a sin to go and see someone because you miss them? She puts both her hands around her eyes and holds her eyes open really wide. She wanted to touch him! Grabbing motions from her hands. She declares that that's being together! Real love!
Cairo’s about to say something, but there’s a drunk guy behind them who chimes in that she’s exactly right! Drunk guy declares that people are depressed because they lack human touch! Policeman says that Kelvin said no. If Natalie keeps at it, it's a crime. Natalie moans that she didn't know that he didn't want her. Cairo swallows, because he knows this is true. His friend is a scumbag when it comes to women! Natalie moans that she thought she could change him. She tried to change him. Another uncomfortable look from Cairo. Natalie moans that later, she wanted to end it nicely. She almost starts to cry again when the drunk guy chimes in again.
Policemen yell at Drunk Guy to be quiet. Natalie asks what drunk guy is there for. Cop replies that a drunk guy molested a colleague at a company dinner after trying to get her drunk. She kept saying no but he wouldn’t listen. Drunk guy protests that he loves his coworkers! He looks at the cute ones! Was it wrong to give her a pat on the butt? Cairo snorts – through the tissue – at that one. Drunk guy tells Natalie not to be so upset. They call it an assault and stalking, when it's all innocent. They're all like that! Cairo winces, because this guy really is a stalker.
But a drunk Natalie starts to cry. She declares that she stalked him. She was a stalker! She starts weeping loudly! Then she remembers. She asks if the policeman can find a missing person for her? This woman invited her to her house, when she wasn't Kelvin’s mom. The woman said she was, but it turned out she wasn't. Then who was that woman who invited her? Why did that kind looking lady do that? Policeman asks Cairo if Cairo knows what she’s talking about. He has no idea. Because he hasn’t figured it out yet. Natalie slurs that it’s so weird. Who was that woman? Natalie declares that she needs to see that woman. Cairo laughs at how weird a drunk Natalie is.
Later, he’s relaxing in his fancy bathtub with his glass of wine. He thinks about Natalie, her heart-broken face, her tears. He sighs and calls her a fool. He kept telling her. He asks why go there (thinking about Natalie) and takes a sip of wine. He thinks back to the police station. Natalie is basically asleep sitting up. He asks the policeman what’s going to happen to Natalie, since it's her first offence. Policeman declares that Natalie’s going to have to go to court. Cairo asks if they couldn’t just settle it with a fine and avoid court. Cop asks him why he cares. Didn't she assault him, too? Cairo realizes how bad it looks and quickly pulls the tissue out of his nose. Heh. He says that it’s nothing and he did it himself. Cop smiles. Cop goes back to his paperwork and says that Kelvin’s mother wants there to be severe punishment. So no settling. K.MOM is a witch.
Back in the bath, Cairo splashes some water on his face and wonders if the court date was today. The doorbell rings. Cairo makes a face, wondering who is disturbing his bath. More urgent doorbell ringing. Cairo turns up his music and then some more, because the bell keeps ringing. Cairo tries to just relax, but then he hears the keypad as someone comes into his house.
Cairo quickly gets out of the tub, puts on a robe, and heads downstairs, demanding to know what these people are doing there. It’s a realtor with two obnoxiously loud women. Realtor apologizes for not knowing Cairo was there; he just came to show the place. Show the place? Cairo tells the Realtor that he’s mistaken. Realtor says that the owner said they needed a new tenant ASAP. They said he could come anytime, since it was urgent, and even gave Realtor the passcode. Realtor tells the women to go ahead and look around. Cairo groans, frustrated, and declares that the landlord is giving him trouble now too. The women love his place. Cairo declares that he remodeled the place himself. There must've been a misunderstanding. He’s not listing this place. When he asks them to leave, Realtor declares that they’ll make it really quick. Cairo screams in frustration, asking them to get out of his house!
Cairo’s meeting with Mom at his office. She’s the landlord. That’s what that call to the realtor was. Cairo says that he’s taking over the lease of the place. Mom replies that Cairo wants to solve everything with money. Cairo retorts that Mom’s the one who tried to solve things with real estate. Completely calm, Mom replies that she didn't know it'd be so effective. He even asked to see her. It's been years since she could sit and drink tea with him like this. She takes a sip of tea and declares that it's nice. Cairo rolls his eyes.
Mom tells Cairo that they should drink tea together every day once he moves back home. The implication being that he’s losing his apartment. Cairo declares that he will never give away that place. Mom tells him that he wants the place in her name but doesn’t want to live with her. He’s shameless. Cairo protests that this is why he said he’ll sign the contract and give her the deposit. Or is she wanting to sell it? Mom puts down her tea cup and remarks that she doesn’t know why he likes that house so much. There aren't many good memories there.
Mom tells Cairo that living alone will seem pitiful to others. Cairo shoots back that she’s the one who lives worrying about what other people think. Intense looks at each other. Mom declares that Cairo needs to bring the girl she invited over to the house. Cairo asks who she’s talking about, but then realizes that Mom is the woman Natalie was talking about. He asks Mom if *she’s* the one who invited Natalie?! Mom replies that they'll sign the rent contract at 10 AM tomorrow. He either brings the girl by then or moves home. Mom leaves his office.
Which brings us back to the beginning of the episode, with Cairo running for the courthouse. The judge asks Natalie if she acknowledges the charges of stalking. Natalie laughs. Cairo tries to get through security. Natalie declares that she’s the crazy bitch. She must've been insane! And the crazy eyes are going. Cairo begs to be let through because he has to testify in court. The guard asks his relation to the defendant. Natalie declares that this is what she said to the jerk… Cairo tells the guard that it's his fiancée… Natalie says she said, “Let's get married.” Cairo stumbles into the courtroom. Everyone sees him, including Natalie, who can’t believe that jerk has shown up again!
Cairo walks forward and asks if he can please testify. Natalie declares that she objects! Judge asks Cairo who he is. Cairo answers that he’s friends with the defendant and knows the whole story. Natalie protests that Cairo’s in it with the dude. Cairo declares that the victim should clearly reject the defendant for it to be a crime of stalking but Kelvin never once said no. He just avoided her. Natalie can’t believe what Cairo’s saying. Especially since she expected him not to be on her side.
Cairo declares that Natalie was dating Kelvin and he just disappeared. Isn't it natural that she kept looking for him? Kelvin kept hiding and then sent a single text to end it. A vague one, at that. Cairo tells Natalie to show the judge the evidence… Submit the text to His Honor. She starts to get out her phone but Judge says that he understands the situation. He accepts that the victim didn't say no clearly, but Natalie did drunkenly cause a commotion at his place of business, so he’s going to fine her 50 won.
Natalie glares over at Cairo. He sighs with relief and winks in her direction. She looks at the 50 won note and thinks that the price she needs to pay for her love is higher than jaywalking but lower than soliciting. Heh. She pays her fine.
Walking home from the courthouse, she thinks that her love ended, like urinating on the street. Love that image! Will she be able to love again? She looks up and there's Cairo. He smiles slightly to say hello. Natalie grimaces and tries to walk by Cairo. He steps in her path. She asks him what his problem is. He proposes that they go to his house, to meet with Mom. She's waiting for Natalie. Natalie can’t believe him and asks why she should. He replies that the mom who invited her is actually his mom. She’s shocked as he smiles at her.
Steaming vegetables. Mom is cooking. Grandma comes into the kitchen and asks if it’s a special day, since Mom is cooking up a spread. Mom answered that they might have a special guest. Grandma notices the ‘might’ and asks if they’re coming or not? Mom replies that if the guest doesn't come, they'll make a good chunk of money. Whichever it is, it's a good day. Heh. She’s funny. Grandma nods and understands that it’s that day.
Cairo is ripping through traffic, anxiously glancing at his watch as he does. Aunt is on the phone saying that she’s at the real estate agency and she’s there to the rental contract in Mom’s stead. Those two obnoxious ladies are waiting with the realtor. Wearing sunglasses inside. I find that so annoying. Aunt says that the time was set for 10AM. She was told to sign it if he wasn’t at the house by then. Cairo promises that he’s on his way. He asks Aunt to wait a bit. More crazy driving. Mom answers the phone and tells Aunt to sign it at 10 AM sharp. She is not budging! Aunt pulls out her seal and breathes on it. Cairo arrives at the house and runs around to drag a girl out of the car.
Rental Agency. Aunt gets a call and then apologizes that they’re no longer going to be leasing the apartment. Breathing hard, Cairo rushes into the house, announcing that he’s there. Grandma and Dad are smiling, looking to meet Cairo’s girlfriend. They stop smiling. Mom comes out and greets them. Natalie is hiding behind Cairo. She steps out from behind him and looks like a torn-up mess. Mom stops smiling. Natalie’s wearing torn white short-shorts and a purple lace halter and carrying fried chicken. What is she wearing? And what’s with her hair? Natalie’s wearing a sweet smile, though. The family can’t help but be slack-jawed.
[ People Management ]
Roll back to 17 hours before. I think I like how it gives us just a snippet and then rolls backward. I usually absolutely hate it, but it’s really working for me in this series. It’s right after Natalie’s court appearance when Cairo finds her on the sidewalk. Right where the first episode left off. Natalie walks past Cairo. Cairo falls in behind her. Natalie sums up: So, the mom who invited her over was his mom and she thinks they’re dating? Right. And Cairo wants her to fake a relationship with him? Yup. And meet his parents? Yes. So what was with the outfit?
Natalie stops and looks at him. Does she look *that* desperate for marriage? Cairo’s surprised by the question. Like the thought never occurred to him that she was desperate. She can't believe he’s asking her not to marry him but to fake a relationship, like she’s just crazy about getting married. It's so absurd and rude! Cairo asks if she would marry him if he actually asked her to? Natalie makes a face and tells him not to try flirting with her. No, thank you. Even if he were the last guy on earth, she wouldn't choose him, ever. And that’s a clear sign, if we hadn’t already figured out that they were going to fall in love with each other, that they will be falling in love with each other.
Cairo sarcastically thanks Natalie for her refusal. He explains that *that* is exactly why he needs her. The whole reason he’s taking her home is so he doesn't have to get married. Saying, “I have a girlfriend. No more blind dates.” Is this his plan? Bingo. Natalie tells him to just talk it out with his family. Cairo replies that if that could simply solve it, would he have come all the way there? Cairo mentions that he’s a little economically tight at the moment; she just needs to help him until it’s figured out. Natalie sees right through that: He needs money from his parents but he doesn't want to live the way they want him to. She asks him why she should help with such a sneaky plan.
Cairo declares that he’ll pay Natalie. How much does she make in an hour? Cairo declares that he’ll pay her three…no, five times what she makes. Natalie yells back at him that she wouldn't do it even for a million bucks! Cairo isn’t giving up. He asks if she wants to try again with Kelvin. Through gritted teeth, Natalie declares that she barely survived breaking up with him because of the humiliation. Start over with him? She starts muttering because the idea is crazy! Cairo tells her that she can start a new life with a new face. And he means that literally, since he’s a plastic surgeon. Not at all insulting to imply that her man problems are because she’s ugly.
Cairo starts laughing. Clueless to how that was so insulting. He pulls out a business card to prove it, but she shoves him aside. He says that dumped girls come to him all the time, to get prettier and take their revenge. Isn’t she going to take revenge? Looking at her face she should! Wow, so now she's not only desperate but ugly. We now can conclude that Cairo is good at insulting people but not at sweet talking them. It’s that surly nature of his.
Natalie stops, eyes closed with frustration. She opens them to the business card sitting right in her face and Cairo smiling sweetly. She yells, asking what his problem is! She declares that everything that happened is his fault. It all started when he showed up. He was there at all the most humiliating moments! He looks at her like he’s been falsely accused. She continues that she was embarrassed at Kelvin’s house because of Cairo! And she was even called a stalker!
Holding his hands out like he’s saying ‘whoops,’ Cairo declares that it's not 100% his fault. If she were less…Natalie cuts him off. Again, not persuading, dude. How dare Cairo say that! Does he think she’s a pushover? She swings in his direction as she tells him to leave before things get ugly and she turns him into a dog! I laugh because Cairo reflexively grabs his nose. She makes like she’s going to kick him in the shins. Cairo jumps backward to avoid her foot. She stomps away muttering about how he’s getting on her nerves!
Natalie is walking down the street. Cairo’s now following her about 10 feet behind. Natalie arrives at her rendezvous with Zoe. She compliments Zoe on how great she looks. She does look really cute. Cairo walks up and starts talking to Zoe. He compliments Zoe, too. Zoe leans over and asks who the guy is. Natalie waves at him, annoyed, and says to ignore him. Cairo answers, telling Zoe his name and handing her his card. Natalie tells him to get lost, but Zoe sees dollar signs when she sees that Cairo is a plastic surgeon. Cairo asks if they’re meeting for drinks; he’ll buy. Zoe laughs and says that she and Natalie were going clubbing, actually.
This is news for Natalie. Clubbing? She whines that Zoe said she would buy tofu kimchi and rice wine. Cairo tells Natalie that rice wine sounds gloomy. He looks at Zoe and says that clubbing is best for improving your mood. Zoe smiles. Zoe holds up the bag she’s carrying and says that she brought Natalie some clothes. Cairo tells Zoe that she’s a great friend, with sense too. Zoe asks if Cairo wants to go with them? Natalie protests but Zoe ignores her. Cairo gratefully accepts. The pair start walking with Natalie protesting that she’ll never go clubbing with that jerk!
Next thing we see is Zoe dancing with a guy in a club. Natalie’s changed her clothes and is sitting, sulking at one of the tables. She’s drinking a lot. Cairo arrives and orders another drink. Can’t tell if it’s for him or for Natalie. Natalie’s slurring makes it obvious that she’s drunk now. She asks Cairo if he thinks that by acting like this that she’ll join him in his con. Cairo made her a criminal and stole her tofu kimchi! Cairo tells Natalie that he’s sorry. He misunderstood her and unintentionally hurt her. Natalie reflects on that.
Cairo adds that he’s suffered just as much as she has. Really? Heartbroken, humiliated, compared to?.. He had juice thrown on him, was hit by a beer bottle, so they should just call it even and make up! She shows that thought and gets up to leave. Cairo yells after her, asking where she’s going now. Maybe that drink was for him, because he sounds a little drunk, too. She yells at him to stop following her! She’s going to the restroom!
In the restroom, Natalie is massaging her temples, moaning that her head hurts. So that’s how her hair got messed up. Headache massage. Zoe arrives and asks where Natalie found the plastic surgeon. Natalie replies that it’s not what she’s thinking. He’s friends with that bastard, Kelvin. Zoe can’t believe that Cairo’s a friend of the guy who made her into a stalker. Why's Cairo with her? Natalie sighs and says that this is what she’s saying. What is she doing? She wants to go home.
Zoe stops Natalie from leaving the bathroom and tells her that this is her problem. They have a ton of Plan B's here. Why does Natalie think she suggested a club? Just because she lost a guy doesn't mean it's the end of the world. Zoe wanted Natalie to have a good time. Natalie asks if Zoe wants her to have a one-night stand. Zoe’s not suggesting that. She means Natalie should heal herself. Zoe drags Natalie out onto the dance floor.
Natalie’s having a great time getting her groove on, but whenever a guy starts dancing with her, she moves on. Zoe sees and groans. She starts to go grab Natalie when she encounters a guy grooving around *with sunglasses on.* I hate him already. He talks like Steve Martin's 'wild and crazy guy.' Guy asks how big her party is. Zoe says two and Guy says they have a party of two too. Zoe adds she’s with a really pretty girl. Who Cairo thinks needs to get plastic surgery. Sorry. A little snark going on. Guy likes that idea. He’s out with a rich friend. They can have a double date. Zoe agrees since her friend was feeling lonely.
Natalie is crazy dancing. Zoe comes to grab her and Natalie doesn’t want to go. Zoe drags her anyway. And guess who the rich friend is… Kelvin. Of course. Guy tells Kelvin that the girl is dying of loneliness. Hopefully they can tap those tonight! Yeah! Really hate Guy even more now. They make their way over to Zoe. Natalie hasn’t turned around and Kelvin starts dancing with her. Then they turn around. They stop dancing.
Guy’s surprised they know each other. Kelvin immediately gets on his high horse; does she really have to be like this?! Natalie yells back; does he think she came to see him? Kelvin asks if he’s supposed to believe that this is a coincidence. She came to a club for a one-night stand with some guy and it just “happened” to be him. Natalie can’t believe him. One-night stand? He was going to pick up a girl for some fun tonight? She’s now a criminal because of him! Zoe realises that this is the jerk. Kelvin tells Guy that this is the girl he told Guy about. Guy can’t believe the Stalker followed Kelvin here, too.
Everyone’s stopped dancing, because of the ruckus the four are making. Where’s Cairo? Zoe clarifies that Kelvin is the guy that charged Unni (Natalie) with stalking? Guy says that Natalie got her friend involved too! Zoe looks at Guy like she wants to punch him as he declares that they planned it all out. Zoe asks what Guys are talking about since he hit on her first. Finally Cairo has noticed the commotion.
Kelvin demands Natalie tell him the truth. Why did she come there? Zoe asks him if he’s deaf. Natalie became a criminal today and wants to forget about it. Kelvin doesn’t believe it. He was the target of course. Natalie asks if Kelvin is saying she can't go clubbing? He can have fun and she can't? She starts poking Kelvin as she yells that she just happened to run into him! It's no crime! Hello? Cairo?
Guy asks if Kelvin wants to call the cops. Zoe can’t believe Guy. The ink on the sentence hasn't even dried up yet! Cairo finally arrives, immediately wrapping his arm around Natalie’s shoulders and telling her that he looked all over for her. Then he asks Guy what he’s staring at. I love that his voice is daring Guy to keep doing it so Cairo can punch him. Kelvin can’t believe it. He looks a little pissed that Cairo has his arm around Natalie. Cairo looks at Kelvin like he’s surprised and asks when Kelvin got there. Kelvin starts to ask why they’re together when Cairo cuts him off and says, didn’t he tell Kelvin? He’s seeing Natalie.
Kelvin is shocked. He looks like you could knock him over with a feather right now. His mouth is hanging open. Cairo is smiling. Natalie is just looking at Kelvin. She slaps Cairo’s arm off her shoulder and walks off. Cairo tells a gaping Kelvin that they’ll talk more later and hurries after Natalie. Zoe gives them both a glare and leaves too. Kelvin almost falls over.
Natalie leaves the club. Cairo runs after her, asking if she’s just leaving. Does she just want to be made a fool of again? Not looking at him or stopping, she asks why he helps her, since he’s Kelvin's friend. Cairo replies that this is why he can help her to get her revenge. Natalie stops walking but doesn’t look at Cairo. Looking at her, Cairo says that he will make Kelvin fall for her. The moment Kelvin does, she can dump him the same way he did her. She turns to look at him, the heartbreak evident on her face. She asks if she’ll really be able to do that. Does she have that in her, to be cold like that? Cairo looks a bit uncomfortable as he tells her that she just needs to do as he says.

Cairo takes Natalie to a restaurant where she’s slurping down her ramen. He watches her eat with an expression like he’s trying to figure out if she’s okay or not. He asks if she’s coming. She frowns and says that meeting his parents is a bit much. Cairo asks if she loves him. Confusion from Natalie. He tells her that she doesn’t need to get on his parents’ good side when she doesn’t even love him. She can do whatever she wants. She starts to be swayed and then tells him to let her get sober first. Cairo looks at his watch and sighs. He mutters to himself about what a slob Natalie is (when she eats).

Natalie is wandering down the sidewalk with Cairo protesting after her that she can just go to the house. Natalie protests that she can't go empty handed!

Cairo is dragging Natalie towards his car. She’s protesting that she doesn’t want to go. She’s still wearing her club clothes. He opens the cars and she stops. She begs him to let her change her clothes. He tells her she looks perfect and shoves her in the car.
Switch to Natalie standing in front of the family with a big smile on her face. She bows deeply and greets them. Dad is smiling. Almost like a lecherous old man. Grandma is inwardly groaning and Mom’s mouth is hanging open. Cairo announces that this is his girlfriend. Mom tries to recover from her shock. She states that it's so early today… Natalie smiles. Cairo says that he spent all night persuading Natalie to come home with him. Which is the truth. He brought Natalie home before she changed her mind. Grandma asks if they were together all night?
Natalie smiles and apologizes for the short notice. Only the convenience store was open. She offers them the plastic bag she’s carrying. Dad smiles and thanks her for the present, taking it. He tells them to sit. Mom is not happy. They adjourn to the living room. Man, I would be embarrassed, even if I wasn’t dating the guy. Club clothes… Dad’s sitting across from Natalie, smiling to himself. Definitely looking like a dirty old man. Of course, Cairo doesn’t notice, but then, he’s not actually really dating Natalie.
Mom arrives carrying a throw blanket. She gives Dad a look and he clears his throat. He is a dirty old man. Natalie thanks Mom for the blanket and puts it over her legs, with Cairo helping, of course. She mutters that she'll feel drunk if she’s warm. Mom almost spills the tea she’s pouring. Cairo glances over at Mom and suppresses a smile. Grandma says that Natalie must have a high alcohol tolerance. Not that I’ve seen. Natalie answers that she does because her parents own a shop that sells liquor. Shocked faces, including Cairo’s.
Natalie turns to Mom and apologizes for not making it last time. Mom says she understands it wasn't an easy decision. They’re not sure of their relationship yet. Natalie smiles and thanks her for understanding. She turns to smile at Cairo, putting her hand on his leg, and says that they made it official not too long ago. They’re still getting used to each other, so they (the family) can just watch the relationship grow. Another suppressed smile from Cairo. I’m holding back mine, too. Natalie says that she doesn’t understand why people need to get the family's permission like this. Yes, the parents can pick who you'll spend the rest of your life with. But the ones taking responsibility for that prank are the ones getting married. Mom loudly puts her cup down into its saucer. Another stifled smile.
Grandma asks if Natalie is saying that she and Cairo don’t want them to get involved. Natalie enthusiastically nods. Mom is not happy. Natalie says that they’ll love each other and fight like crazy. Glance at Cairo who looks all lovey dovey at her. Oh boy. Natalie adds that when they're sure they want to be together, then they’ll come again for official permission. Cairo turns his head away from everyone because he’s having a hard time controlling his smile. Natalie asks if the family could please wait until then.
Natalie picks up her tea and saucer and takes a sip, with Cairo helping her hold the saucer like a doting boyfriend. He glances at his family. Dad’s got a smile on. Mom still does not. It’s like she’s thinking that Cairo is doing this to punish her. Cairo asks if the tea is good. Natalie says that it’s warm; it's really helping her hangover. Dad smiles again and Grandma tries not to smile. Mom still isn’t smiling. Cairo smiles and playfully bumps Natalie with his shoulder.
Mom asks Natalie whether she thinks she should know about Cairo’s family. He’s the only son for 3 generations (you know). Natalie’s stopped smiling and has started blinking heavily as Mom says that their family is not extremely conservative but they have their own ways. Natalie would probably have to change her lifestyle. It just looks like Grandma rolled her eyes. She should keep that in mind in her relationship with Cairo.
There’s snoring. Natalie has fallen asleep – I had a feeling it was coming when she started blinking like that – and fell forward onto Mom’s shoulder. Everyone is surprised. Cairo starts coughing into his hand to keep from laughing out loud. He puts his head down and keeps his hand over his mouth. Natalie reaches up to wrap her arm around Mom. Mom, without looking at Natalie, reaches up and pulls Natalie’s arm off of her. Then she shoves Natalie off of her, by pushing Natalie backward with a hand to her forehead. Heh. Mom continues to just look straight ahead.
Cairo pretends to be attentive. Natalie kicks her legs out so that they’re laying across his lap. He reaches down to make sure the blanket is still covering Natalie’s legs. Aunt arrives, with Grandma cringing. Aunt greets Cairo happily and then asks who the girl is. Cairo tries to pat Natalie on the face to wake her, but she is out.
Later, Natalie and Cairo are leaving the house. The family sees them out. Natalie bows deeply and apologizes for falling asleep. It’s obvious that she feels terrible. Dad thanks her for feeling so comfortable around them. Cairo isn’t sure how he feels about that. Natalie smiles thankfully and Mom glares over at Dad. Aunt starts to say that she’s sorry she missed it but catches herself and changes to say that she didn't get to talk too much to Natalie. Grandma tells Natalie to come again; they can have rice wine together. Natalie claps her hands together and declares that she’d love to. Her pancakes are the best! Grandma likes her, I can tell. Mom is still not smiling. She tells Natalie to have a safe trip back. Natalie apologizes again and bows.
Cairo loads Natalie into the car. As he gets in, Natalie tells the family that they’ll get going. She waves brightly. Grandma waves vigorously back as the car drives away. Aunt grabs Grandma and tells her to stop waving. Mom watches the car leaving, still not happy. She goes in first.
As they drive away, Natalie sighs. She feels bad about lying to them. Cairo tells her that she was an expert at it; the lies just came out so smoothly! Natalie replies that she was only saying what she honestly thinks. Natalie mutters that this is bad, though. They became too comfortable with each other the first time they met. What if the family really wants them to get married? Cairo replies that Natalie doesn’t need to worry about that; she doesn't know his mom. Natalie replies that she’s most worried about Mom. She was generous the whole time. Cairo declares that Mom wasn’t being nice, she was training Natalie.
Grandma grabs a caffeine drink. Mom approaches and tells Grandma that she’ll take the drink. It's full of caffeine. The implication is that Grandma shouldn’t be drinking it. Grandma protests that it's okay once in a while. Mom replies – her voice is always so non-threatening. How does she do that? – that Grandma won’t be able to sleep tonight. She’ll make Grandma some plum tea instead. Grandma sighs and hands over the drink, with a frown.
Mom picks up the box of energy drinks and as she’s leaving the living room, Grandma announces that she approves. She likes Natalie. This gets Mom to pause. Grandma adds that she’s sure that Mom is against her. Grandma asks Dad what he thinks. Dad chuckles and says that his opinion wouldn't matter much. Grandma frowns as he says that he always respects and follows his wife's opinion. Aunt makes a face like he’s full of it. Mom tells Dad that he really doesn’t care about such things. Dad goes back to his newspaper. There is something definitely off in their relationship.
Aunt declares that Cairo seems to like Natalie. She adds that Natalie is Dad’s type. He clears his throat and looks more deeply at the paper as Aunt giggles. She stops giggling when she looks at Mom. Aunt immediately declares that she’s against Natalie. She hates girls that are prettier than she is. Dad clears his throat again and gets up and leaves the room. Grandma says that Cairo came home thanks to Natalie. It's been 3 long years. It's the first time Cairo ever brought a girl home. She proposes they give the couple some time since that's what the couple wants.
There’s a pause as Mom stands and looks at the back of Grandma’s head. Grandma tells Mom to say something. Mom replies that Natalie said she doesn't need their permission. Mom leaves the living room. With her voice lowered, Aunt asks Grandma if she really likes Natalie. Aunt declares that age has really softened Grandma. Grandma says that above everything, Natalie’s funny. Plus, she shook up Mom. Grandma giggles.
Mom is getting Grandma that plum tea she promised. She stops and declares that it's so weird. This isn't the Cairo she knows. Driving, Cairo declares that Mom won't kick Natalie out, but she won't accept Natalie either. Natalie nods. Mom’s ambiguous. Cairo says that Mom will take as much as she can get and make you leave when you're sick and tired. Mom maintains her angelic image without having to hurt anyone herself. That's how she deals with people. Cairo declares that it's… people management.
Natalie looks at Cairo and asks about people management. Isn't that about dating? Cairo says that dating is about personal relationships, too. Natalie should learn from Mom. They arrive. Cairo tells Natalie to get out. When she asks, “Why?” he declares that it’s for revenge. How ominous sounding! Next thing we see is Cairo drawing on Natalie’s face. She asks what he’s doing. He replies that men are sensitive to visual changes. He puts down his pen and spins her chair around so they can look at her in the mirror. She seriously looks like a cat right now.
Cairo declares that her breasts could use another 200cc in size. Natalie smacks her hands across her chest. He adds that she could use thigh liposuction and Botox for the arms. She shoves his hand away and tells him not to touch her. Love that she likes herself just the way she is.
Make over montage! Natalie comes out dancing and Cairo says that she needs to appeal to *guys.* She runs back into the dressing room to change. Next outfit, I think is really cute, even if it is strapless. Cairo takes a quick look as Natalie blows a kiss in his direction and declares that she shouldn’t be so obvious. She should be subtle. He goes back to his magazine. Her next selection, he doesn’t even look at. He snaps his finger and sips his coffee. The girl hands over the clothes Cairo has picked out. Natalie takes them. Her face looks like she wants to slug Cairo.
Natalie awkwardly exits the dressing room. Cairo has a small moment where his eyes pop out of his head. Natalie smiles and he quickly recovers to frown again. He hands over his card and tells the salesgirl to charge it. Natalie immediately starts to protest him paying. She takes his card from the salesgirl and hands it back to him.
Zoe walks by and sees them. She sounds upset when she says, “Unni!” They glance in her direction. Cairo stands up and whispers to Natalie that they have to act like a couple. Mom is meticulous. Natalie whispers back, asking about her revenge. He whispers that they have to do it, especially for her revenge. Besides, she’s worth every penny. Natalie laughs and starts smiling at Zoe. So does Cairo. She waves and says hello.
Natalie is now walking down the street, confident, flipping her hair like she’s a supermodel. She heads to Bon Cafe (Kelvin’s place). Rocco sees her as she’s looking around and comes over wearing a smile. Natalie’s about to not talk to him, when Cairo’s voice tells her that players are terrible flirts, 24/7. She looks back at Rocco and smiles. He tells her, “Hi again.” She orders a grapefruit juice. Cairo tells her to think of all men as potential boyfriends. Natalie stands there and smiles.
Rocco looks at her outfit and asks why Natalie looks so much prettier today. Mixed reactions from the other wait staff. Natalie laughs, flattered. Cairo’s voice tells her not to be fooled by it. She shouldn’t flutter because of the opponent's compliments. She stops smiling. She nods and declares that she changed her style a bit. She tells him that he should try a change, too, since he has a nice build. Cairo’s voice tells her not to be generous with her compliments. Rocco asks Natalie if she’ll pick out an outfit for him someday. She works at a department store, right? I can’t believe they’re flirting by talking about buying him clothes. Cairo’s voice tells her to use the key phrase now. Natalie smiles and tells Rocco, “Sure.” He should call her. She hands over her business card. Cairo’s voice adds, “Sometime,” so Natalie adds, “Sometime,” to her invitation.
The grapefruit juice arrives as Kelvin does. He sees Natalie from the back and thinks that this is some new, hot customer. He peers over his sunglasses at her and nods with approval. Rocco tells Natalie that the drink is on him. Cairo’s voice says that being polite is for her benefit, not others. Natalie smiles sweetly at Rocco. From behind them, Kelvin pulls off his sunglasses and declares that he’ll buy the drink. He owns the place, after all. He starts to tell her that she looks familiar when she turns around to glare at him. Shocked Kelvin face.
Kelvin starts doing little karate chops in Natalie’s direction as he asks what she wants. The staff laughed at him. She holds up the juice and says she was there for that. She turns around and, putting a hand on Rocco’s arm, nods a goodbye and walks out of the restaurant. Rocco sighs. Kelvin looks from Rocco to Natalie and then chases after her.
Kelvin asks Natalie if she came all that way for just a cup of juice. Without stopping or looking at him, she asks if that's something she would do. He demands to know what she’s up to. Cairo drives up. Natalie gets in the car and puts on her seatbelt. Cairo waves and they drive off, leaving a speechless Kelvin.
After a minute, Natalie stops pretending to be indifferent. She breaks out into a big grin and asks Cairo if he saw Kelvin’s expression. She declares that the part-timer was falling for her, too. She must be born with it. Cairo tells her not to overact. It's just the start now. Natalie can’t help but beam and giggle to herself. Cairo takes a sip of his grapefruit juice and asks Natalie what she wants for dinner. She declares that she’s good. She'll get off at the subway station.
Cairo declares that they haven't dated very long. Pasta will do. Natalie asks why he’s being so considerate. Cairo scoffs at the notion that he might like Natalie, too. He tells her not to get carried away. Aunt is behind them. Natalie immediately turns around to look. Cairo hisses at her not to. She can’t believe his family stalks him. He snarks that it's a family full of love. Heh.
Aunt is driving with a scarf on her head. She blows at it, not taking her hands off the wheel, and mutters that she’s so hot. Cairo starts changing lanes to give Aunt a hard time.
