The Age Of Gears And Machinery

Prologue

In the year 2120, An object of Extra-terrestrial Origin landed in Antarctica. Humans being the curious and stupid creatures they, are decided to investigate the crash site.

"Curiosity killed the cat" - a phrase often used to depict how curiosity brought forth unwanted results...apocalyptic results.

The object that crashed, was found to be robot of some sort, a technological marvel. it was a machine that was sentient and friendly. Humanity praised it as a proof of friendly Aliens...but how wrong were they. The Sentient Machinery called himself a Cryptonian. A advanced race of aliens that inhabited a planet similar to earth. A race that left their organic bodies for mechanical ones. They downloaded their consciousness into their machines and spread their influence from one sentient planet to another to form "Good" relationswith them.

However, "Good" had a different meaning to the Cryptonians as they released a virus they called "Cy-Aug 1547."

The Cryptonian, was not an ambassador but a Trojan horse. A horse that delivered a virus that killed of 80% of humanity's population.

"The Weak die, big deal" The Cryptonians quoted as They ruled over the humans for a period of 300 years. As hope was nearly forgotten to humanity, a miracle of astronomical proportions occurred.

Cryptonians had a tradition, they were to sojourn to their capital and engrave their names into their capital's central database, a planet-sized super computer that they called home.

A local star that was harnessed by the Cryptonians near their capital collapsed on itself creating a super nova that destroyed all of the Cryptonians present.

The stationed Cryptonians on Earth caught wind of this and were mortified as their home planet was destroyed. Humans being tenacious creatures, always dreamed of a revolution that would set them free! and when they had heard of this miraculous chance...they rose up against their extra-terrestrial oppressors and terminated them.

They had achieved peace and freedom, however it was short lived as the Earth was 60% inhospitable due to the termination of The Cryptonian's modification to the planet. They had modified the planet so much that upon termination, Humanity was facing extinction once more.

Another Chance of even bigger astronomical proportions occurred... Astroid 16 psyche, a local asteroid filled with gold, crashed into the metallic portion of the earth and restarted its life support augmentation, rejuvenating the planet and the remaining inhabitants. AP 16, as it was nicknamed, was not only filled with gold, but every metal-known and unknown-to both Cryptonians and humans.

A neon, crystal-Iike element from the Astroid bonded with the Cy-Aug 1547 present in every human and animal giving them hyper advanced abilities.

Such powers were random and small as they either gave individuals abilities from hyper-athletic bodies to enhanced super-computers for brains.

Humans with their newfound abilities swiftly rebuilt their world amidst all of the rubble. Conflict soon arose and war followed. Unlike the wars fought with guns and tanks of the previous era, they were fought with Mechs and robots inspired by chess pieces.

During their captivity, they had no form of electronic entertainment as they were enslaved in factories and Manual labour camps. However, the Older folks recreated chess and it grew popular as a game and as a source of gambling. Desperate individuals would play with their lives and maternal possessions at stake. If you were good at it, you would profit and rise... If not you'd suffer.

"Old habits die hard"- the new humans reminisced. They created created these mechanical suits of battle armor with the AI left behind by the Cryptonians, the materials from the augmented earth and the asteroid.

Ordinary, mass produced models were called pawns; Range-oriented armaments, bishops; High-Speed and Lethality, Knights; Defense Oriented Armaments, Rooks; Command centers, Kings; and super weapons, Queens.

The world split into 2, Eastasia and Westerica. With no exception, these two countries had their own underbellies- their own rotten slums and underworld. Worlds separated from the one above it, a dark sinister world that had one rule: "Natural Selection"- the strong live on as the weak perish. The birthplace of our protagonist.. Nicknamed: Hell on earth.

Humans weren't the only ones given abilities as the plants and animals too were modified by Cy-Aug 1547 and the Neon Element. They gave the rise to a whole new species known as Abominations and a new profession, hunters, individuals with the goal of selling their prey's parts.

Chapter 1: A baby's perspective

When I woke up I was in a dumpster in an alley. I couldn't move my body as easily as I remember being to so I decided to stay still and think. I could hear the rain pattering away at the ledge overhead and the sound it makes clashing against the dumpster's lid. I was confused so I decided to survey my surroundings.

"I am in a stinky alley in the middle of the slums..wait how do I know that?" I thought.

I racked my brain for answers just to see a small screen.

Cybernetic augmentation: Light speed Processing

"What? Is going on?!" I scream. But instead of words my body cries and wails instead.

"Wahh!!! Wahh!!!

"Okay, that's not what I was going to say!" is what I would think, but what would come out would be: "Wah ah ah waaahhh!!"

I decided to shut up and think instead. I shut my eyes and slowly drown out the bustling sound of rain and people.

The blank space I see slowly light up with numbers in code. Code? How do I know that? I suddenly feel a wave of pain in my head making me scream..or my infantile body to wail as information is streaming into my head in a language I don't speak.

It is the year 2540, 120 years after humanity's greatest coup d'etat. I live in an age where Humans are cybernetically enhanced, I don't have a "previous life" that would explain my superior thinking ability and I am in the slums of City D's outer ring.

I have come to the conclusion that my mind is incredibly "mature" but my body is not due to my in-born Cybernetic Augmentation of "Light speed Processing." I am a human with a super-computer for a brain and that's it. By cross referencing the data I can gather, I have come to the conclusion that I am..by this age's criteria.. Physically weak and incredibly unfit in the field of battle.

"Ho~ it's very annoying... But not as annoying as me saying words but cooing sounds come out instead!!!" I thought. After contemplating for a few moments, I give a tired Sigh internally "living like a helpless toddler will be troubling but it's better than being left for dead in a a dumpster not knowing any better..So that's a plus." I concluded.

The sun has set and the alley has gotten dark and the bright neon signs have lit up as the number of levitating transports have decreased. The amount of people have increased and the street hookers dressed in revealing clothing, have started to call out. Amongst the steady stream of people, a fairly large and well built man picked me up and lifted gently.

I was so deep in my thoughts that when I snapped out of it as I was being carried by large muscular arms. The man had grey hair and a strong countenance, he was wearing an oil stained apron with a utility box in the other hand.

"You poor thing..." He muttered. I tried to communicate with words but my body would not comply.

"Your parents may be desperate.. But this.. Is unacceptable! From this day forth... I will be your grandfather." He whispered softly craddling my infantile body in his free arm. He took the hood that was covering his face and it revealed a bald, white-bearded man with a look of pity etched into his expression.

"Just because you have sapphire coloured eyes and black hair...this is not what we fought for... Humanity without an advisary, will turn itself into its own enemy..." He said shaking his head.

"black hair and blue eyes huh? I wonder what's the fuss about." I thought. "Being able to process everything may not be as helpful as originally thought..as it already has taken a normal childhood from me."

The man picked up his pace due to the rain getting heavier. He walked into building with bright red neon signs that displayed the shop name, not that I could read it but based on its looks it definitely is the shop name.

He was quite respected as many of the people he passed by either nodded, smiled, or waved. He would reply with a soft smile and nod or wave back.

The store had garage doors spanning the front and the tall ceiling of the shop decorated in colorful graffiti. The right wall had heavy duty machinery while the left had small, hand-held tools for finer and more delicate operations. The back wall had a counter top with hologram screens displaying store prices and services, probably the counter, and beside it were 4 large cabinets

Suddenly the doors of three cabinets started to lower slowly with steam fuming out. Three robots painted in Black and Yellow hazard stripes slowly walk out, they each had their own unique look to them.

The Old man first introduced himself, He said his name was Khan and then his black and yellow companions.

The smallest one had a mono wheel and one circular red eye, it had long flexible and extendable arms ad long as its whole body.

"Hello! My Name is Ty-3! I am the Khan's extendable arms!!" He said in a cheery robotic voice.

The largest one came forward, It had one a screen across its face that displayed a smiley face, it had a large body with plenty of flat surfaces and ladders. It's arms and legs had a pair of large hydraulics each connected by flexible pipes to the large tank he carried on his back. It's head and Torso is one in the same and housed a compact cockpit.

"Hello, Name's L1F-3. Khan's Heavy lifter" It replied with a gruff robotic voice.

I didn't notice it but the 3rd, and medium sized-robot, headed for the counter while the Ty-3 was introducing himself.

He looked like the combination of Ty-3 and L1F-3 but more compact. He was using levitating technology as a means of transportation and his arms were a more solid design for lifting heavy objects like L1F-3's combined Ty-3's flexibility.

"Greetings, My name is Ch-4, I am Khan's Chasier, Electric Engineer, and Shop Bodyguard." He said.

Khan motioned to Ty-3 and L1F-3 to go back to recharge mode and instructed Ch-4 to give him the monthly report.

"Sir, We have made 40% more compared to last month. I've deducted our pay, Electrical bill and Life-Support bill." Ch-4 reported.

"That's good." Khan said nodded.

"May I Ask, why do you have a 2-month old infant with you?"

"I found him in a dumpster and decided to be his parent."

"Then I suppose that I'll register him as our Young master and procure his necessities?"

"That would be helpful Ch-4, thank you"

"Just doing my job." Ch-4 replied before going back to the counter.

Khan set me aside on the counter just within range of Ch-4's vision. I watch intently as he keys onto the hologram computer in front of him.

"Your quite a curious infant, most infants in the would be sleeping of wailing- according to my archives.. But your an odd one." Ch-4 comments.

Khan walks down the stairs with a handful of devices on hand, among those items were: a large syringe, a small ball box, a handful of circuit boards, and a laptop. He was on a phone call with someone as he was speaking into his earpiece.

"Yeah, I'm Going to cash in one of the many favors you owe me." Khan clarified.

"Sheesh Khan, You couldn't have picked a harder task. Tsk Tsk, It seems Khan the Scourge! has turn into a seenile soft hearted man. Haha!" the man on the phone laughs.

I could hear the contents of the conversation and the car outside whizzing past the skyline, hurting my ears. I also notice the stench of oil from the bottom the cabinet and the miniscule dirt in between the plates of Ch-4

"It seems that my inborn augmentation, light speed proccessing, is accompanied by enhanced senses as I can hear and see things most people can't." I thought smirking.

Ch-4 notices the slight change in my facial expression.

"This is going to be interesting." He thought.

A couple hours pass as a tall man in cloak enter through the front door. Khan stood up to greet the man.

"To protect And reclaim..." He said.

"With blood and Tears..." the man continued.

"That is our creed" They both finish.

The cloaked man, that was a few inches taller than khan, unbuttoned his cloak to reveal an white uniform decorated by numerous shoulder stripes and medal made of shiny metals.

"Ronin, its nice to see you again!" Khan said enveloping Ronin in a hug.

"You too you ol' sap" Ronin reciprocated.

Ronin looked alike to khan, they were both large muscular and scarred. He too had white hair and was smililar to him in width

He was carrying a large hard-sided suitcase that he sets on a table provided by Ty-3, Ronin turns to Ty-3 and Ch-4 with a suspicious gaze.

"Don't worry, I trust them with my life." Kahn said shaking his head.

The uptight man's shoulders slouch as he gave a relieved and tired sigh.

"I know but considering my position, it hard to stop a few habits Especially with a lethal Type-1 military-grade robot known to have a 100% assassination success rate." Ronin chuckles.

I turn my head to Ch-4 in shock.

"This friendly looking bucket of bolts is a Military-grade Assassin with a 100% success rate?!"

Ch-4 turns to Ronin and nods.

"I am -in your human language- retired but if The Revolutionaries are in need of my services, I shall be there." He proclaimed.

Ronin gave a small laugh while Khan just looks at him.

"In this time of peace, hopefully not. I still have nightmares of you And Khan standing side by side in a ankle-high pool of blue Cryptonian blood and parts." Ronin shakes his head while khan gave a sigh.

Khan turns to Ch-4.

"Please bring Shin here gently!" He commanded emphasizing "gently".

"Yes master!" Ch-4 replied.

"Shin huh? I like that name" I thought.

Ch-4 gently laid me on the table as Ronin opened the large suitcase.

"I can't believe you asked me to get the highest military-grade nano tech and an identity for your son." Robin deadpanned.

"When I inspected him, he had no nodes nor curcuits present so I assumed he was Techless...you know society, the Techless are treated as if they were never humans. I found this boy in a dumpster abandoned, its probably because of that." Khan said solemnly.

Ronin grit his teeth and seethed.

"This world's was not what we fought for...what They fought for." Ronin said whipping a tear from his left eye.

"They must be talking about their comrades.." I thought.

"Enough reminiscing, it's time we give him nano tech." Ronin Said as he opened the case.

"No strings nor loopholes Ronin?" Khan asks seriously.

"This is secret-grade nano tech in the testing phase, it cannot be traced and will appear as a inborn augmentation." He replied as he inserted the large needle into my spine.

Pshh!

[ Nano Machines have been accepted ]

I didn't feel any pain during the entire process. They placed the circuit boards, watch, and the black box into my arm. I watched in awe as the nano machines in my body reached out into the items merging them with my self.

[ Information Receiver and Sender has been integrated ]

[ 2.5 Petabytes of Storage has been integrated ]

[ Chain code had been connected ]

Ronin looked at the portable screen in the suitcase and it said:

[ Enter name? _ _ _ _ _ ]

"His name will be Shin BlackSteel" Khan Replied.

Ronin smiles at him happily. "Welcome to parenthood, Khan Blacksteel."

Chapter 2: The 4th cabinet and Khan's Story

It's been 5 years since I was picked up from that alleyway, the 5 years I spent being looked after by Khan and his 3 metal bodied, AI employees. I'd skip on the same street, see the same cracks, kick the same bricks, and greet the same Old lady after going through my rounds in the scrap yards.

"Young Man! Is Khan alright?" She would always ask.

Frustrating as it would seem, it would always disappear as I knew she meant well.

"Yes, He is." I'd reply with a smile as I wave goodbye with my free hand.

She'd wish me good health as I walk away.

"Maybe he was wrong after all." I mutter happily as I pick up the pace.

Not soon after bumping into her, I'd arrive in front of the shop with its entrance garage door open and one of the Leavies

"It's funny how everything has a slanged nickname" I'd mutter.

Leavies, a nickname given to Levitating Transport. Transports made by combining the vehicular technology made by man and the extra-terrestrial.

It revolutionized transportation for a few years, like how the electric car was invented...but just like the one past, the large influx of those that can purchase Leavies caused air traffic- traffic so bad they had to enforce holo lanes and special altitude laws.

Like technology old and new, Its gets better and better... and the old gets older and older, Naturally the price tag that's attached gets bigger and bigger as well.

While the Wealty's, that reside in city A, B and C, things get outdated, they'll scrap it and throw away; however, the frugal and less fortunate here in city D take care of their belongings, kept them safe, functional and alive. That's where we come in, the Extra-Terrestrial Technicians.

Extra-Terrestrial Technicians, ETech for short, are mechanics, engineers, repairmen or simply technicians of the new world. That's our job! Or it should be. Naturally those of higher birth were held in higher regard than the commoner man even if the later had better skills, which in turn gave birth the the Alphabetical City System.

That's the reason City D's existence and current well being is thriving and surviving, because the ETech's like my grandfather kept it alive by fixing, creating and inventing with the scraps thought to be worthless to the rich, by turning it into precious resources needed by us.

Khan and Charlie, the cute nickname I gave Ch-4 when I was 2, never shared anything other than that.

I can see that the workshop has a leavie on Lift, L1F-3's nickname, on his back while Khan was working the kinks in its underbelly, on a wheeled backrest.

I'd walk through the large open garage doors and the infrared laser stationed on ankle height would ring.

Ring ring!

"I'm home gramps!!"

"Hey kiddo, how was the haul?"

"The best so far gramps! We have the nano circuit from a compact toolkit! It was a steal!!"

He looked at me with confusion as how a 5 year old knew what a nano circuit is. He gave Tyler, Ty-3, a look which he had on his face too. They turn to the 5 year old.

"How do you know its a Nano circuit?"

With a smug look I replied.

"A small blue screen starts moving along the piece when I look at it and it told me that it's a nano circuit!"

Khan blinked numerous times to process. His confused expression turns to one of happiness.

He walks over and kneels in front of me.

"That's great kiddo! You cybernetic augmentation finally kicked in!" He said as he patting my shoulders and helped removing the bag I carried of my arm, off.

Brimming with curiosity Khan lead me to his wall filled with tools.

He picked up one from the lower portion and presented it to me.

"Here Kiddo, What's this?"

I stare at it for a few seconds waiting for a few symbols scan the tool, before a screen shows up.

[Dual-handed steel tipped drill]

"That's A Dual-handed Steel Drill!

"Whoa!! That's perfect!! Spot on!" Khan remarks as he lifted me up in praise.

"hehehe, thanks grampa-"

RrrrrRrrrrRrrrr!

An ear piercing siren started blaring with the sound originating from the hologram handsigns and the holo screens turing bright red.

"Alert!! Please Stay indoors!! A pack Bullet hounds have breached the Outer ring! I repeat, the Outer ring has been breached!"

Bullet hounds, Wolves infected by the virus that gave them the unusual physique of 2 large anti-personel guns growing out of its back.

Everyone scrambles for shelter as the sound of rumbling gets louder and louder. Khan drops me on the ground and sprints for the a red button encased in glass.

[ Lockdown. Enhanced glass ]

With a knuckle fist, Khan shattered the glass in one hit and pressed the button at the same time.

The graffitied garage doors fall down locking itself and another, more durable looking garage door rose from the floor locking itself too.

He waved his bleeding hand back and forth in an effort to lessen the pain as he walked to the 4th cabinet, the cabinet with contents I've never seen.

He removed the fake handle to reveal a fingerprint scanner. He presses his finger for it to scan, it beeps and the cabinet door flies open revealing an assortment of rifles, beside a matching amount of handguns of all shapes and sizes, a dual-handed war hammer, and a bottom shelf with apile of ammunition boxes.

My jaw drops as I see the compact armory capable of arming a small group of individuals. Khan passes one of the smaller rifles accompanied by a handful of loaded magazines, to Charlie and ordered him to take me upstairs. Before disappearing from my view, I see him grab the large Warhammer with one hand and turned towards the sealed garage doors in a battle ready stance.

Charlie rushed into the 2nd floors living space and put me in the middle of the room. He hovered above me with his rifle's stock against his shoulder and the iron sights hoisted up to his eye.

Charlie isn't aware of full ability of my augmentation yet. I could hear, as clear as I could see, everything that happened below.

Khan stared at the double-sealed doors intently listening.

The sounds gunshots filled the air, alongside confused screaming

People have started running in mass panic as the bullet hounds picked them off one by one, the only noise one could clearly hear were cries of panic, growling, the sound of bone and steel being crushed, the sound of lesh being torn alongside historical screams of agony.

I would wince in disgust as my processing speed would depict the scenes as If I was standing before them watching, just from the sounds I'm hearing. I can vividly see the friendly lady being eaten alive and no matter how hard I shut my eyes, I can still see it.

Charlie noticed my face showing sign of discomfort and tried to cheer me.

"It's alright Young master, I am here and I'll protect you with all that I am. I promise." He said in his usual monochrome voice.

Although I knew that he will even before he said that, it comforted me. The sound of metal scratching away at metal started to echo throughout the 2-floored shop.

Not long after the start of the noise, barking and gunshots replaced it.

"This is a Platinum-Tungsten alloy seal, if the dogs are putting dents into it...it must be..That" He seethed grimly.

A large pack of bullet hounds have started to gather in front of the establishment giving shooting through the first garage door and into the second relentlessly.

Khan grips his Warhammer tightly as the ear-piercing sound of gunfire subsided. One would breathe a sigh of relief but not Khan, he keyed a code into the gauntlets he put on. It activated and projected a small arm-held Hexagonal Shield with a yellow-ish hue.

"It's coming" He said.

I flinched as he said that, the sound of metal ominously clanking periodically in the form of footsteps meant that it was very heavy- and very heavily armed.

A Bullet hound the size of a Leavie stared at the battered door and bared its fangs. Unlike the bullet hounds, it didn't have 2 guns protruding from its back but a large turret instead.

It leaned its head down slightly and raised the barrel of its large turret, aiming at the part where the lesser hounds concentrated their fire.

BOOM!

A cloud of smoke mixed with soot and dust erupted upon impact. The onlookers from other buildings peered through their windows to see what that explosion was.

"That black-haired brat was bad luck after all."

"He was good man, why did he have to pick that street trash!"

I heard them loud and clear and I couldn't do anything about it.

The hounds surrounded the building with the biggest in the middle with their lethal arms pointed in the the area where the leader shot.

Clank clank.

Two canisters are thrown through the smoke and they rolled across the concrete pavement

The first of the canisters opened with its sides collapsing open and the top propelled upward.

The top flies to the hound's eye level and flashed brightly, blinding both the hound's and the on lookers alike.

The second canister opens like the first but instead, the contents was a four-sided speaker.

It activated and produced sound so loud the sound waves were tangible to the touch, shattering the surrounding glass into dust.

Charlie covered my ears prior to the blast after dropping his rifle.

The sound and light disappeared leaving the ears and eyes of the wolves, knocking out of commission.

Khan jumped through the smoke with his hammer ready to crash down. The confusion caused by the lack of hearing and sight cause the hounds, except the leader, to blindly fire.

Khan effortlessly blocked with the Holo shield on his left arm and swinging the large hammer with his right, systematically elimitaing threats one after the other. With the leaders sense beginning to come back, he was greeted with a hammer shattering his turret breaking his back alongside it.

The commotion attracted the attention of all of the intruders. Khan welcomed them, hammer in hand; meanwhile, Charles peered through the glass-less windows and gave support.

Charlie fired in three short-bursts, at the hounds out of Khan's range funnelling them within his range.

Ba-ba-bang

Charlie hasn't noticed but I peered through the other window to see their masterful performance. Green-ish goo for blood drained from the lifeless bodies comprised of crushed skulls and pierced heads.

Khan huffed amidst of the corpses, trying to catch his breath. I jump off the chair I'm standing on nearly slipping on the bullet casings on the ground. I run downs the stairs and jumped through the hole on the doors left behind in the hounds wake.

"Gramps! That was awesome! Can you teach me?"

He set down his hammer and patted my head.

"Hmm~ I'll think about it."

[ Lying ]

"Heh, I can even detect lines" I thought smugly.

"Lying is bad grampa. I weally wanna learn!" I pout.

He sees the biggest puppy dog eyes I could muster.

"Ugh.. N-no.. But... Ugh..."he answers I between glances filled with hesitation.

"Alright... Fine, Training will starts at dawn!" he reluctantly said.

"Yes grampa." I smiled at him

Charlie looks at the sight of bantering between a worn, war-hardened soldier and a 5 year old boy with puppy dog eyes, he shakes his head.

"Like I said, 'This will be interesting'."
