Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha welcomes us with relaxing jazzy and cute animations. It starts with enchanting cinematography. A collective of wide shots, they take in the ocean, sky, and hills. It truly gives you a sense of healing and curiosity! Also, the visuals of the cast make it even more exciting. After almost two years, Shin Min-ah makes her way back to us with her undeniable charm (and dimples!) as Yoon Hye-jin, a top-tier dentist in Seoul. She is the type to put things on her wishlist while browsing through her e-commerce but holds until there’s a thing called ‘discount’. “A little promotion does not hurt anybody.”
From the very first scene, we have seen how Hye-jin lives her life in order and independently. A hard worker who treats her job diligently. She meets Mrs. Kim Yeon-Ok, an old lady at the elevator who happens to be her neighbor. She offers Hye-jin to eat her side dish rather than ordering food, but she politely declines. It shows us how she does not like sniffs on other people’s business. “Just focus on yourself,” as she said. Well, who would have thought that they’ll meet again at the dental clinic, patient and dentist.
Despite her high standards, Hye-jin puts her patient’s well-being over their money. Unlike her boss and senior dentist who conducts false and overrated treatment to make greater money from her patients. Due to Hye-jin disagreeing with conducting more treatment on Mrs. Kim Yeon-Ok, her boss takes over her patient without consent. For the first time, Hye-jin risks her entire career to save her dignity as a dentist. She quits her job after years of coping with corruption at her dental clinics. She decides to break it off, even treat herself with dazzling shoes that she always dreamed of without waiting for a discount like she used to. Later, feeling helpless due to her recklessness of exposing her boss’s issues and no clinics willing to accept her due to the false rumors, she decides to visits her hometown celebrate her late mother’s birthday.
A fishing boat welcomes us alongside the wide shot of the sea and the bright blue sky. A man appears standing at the deck. Yup, it’s our Kim Seo Ho, our Chief Hong, who is ready to steal our hearts with his smiles and dimples. Other than his dimples, he is the counterpart of Hye-jin. He is unemployed, yet hard-working, helps everyone and does everything with his hand and heart. We witness him speaking Russian to one of the fishermen that he hires. Later, we see him walking around the market getting along with everyone, from youth to elders.
Their worlds clash with one another as Hye-jin comes to Gongjin and lost a pair of her expensive dazzling shoes. Well, to put it shortly, she sits by the beach while reminiscing the sunset sky where she is running around playing kites while her ill mother watches her with loving eyes. She walks through the beach, barefoot, and makes a brief phone call with her father who is already re-married. As soon as she hears the voice of his wife, she couldn’t bring about her late mother’s birthday. All they ever said is “Hi” and “take care.” I guess, many of us have or may not have to experience the same thing. As we grow older, the bond might stretch and for some of us, the holes become wider as we age.
After the phone call, the next thing she knows is her dazzling shoes disappear. It is already gone by the waves. There, she meets the kindhearted Chief Hong or Doo-Sik, who is surfing in the middle of the calm sea and got hit by her pair of dazzling shoes. Who would have thought that becomes the start of their fated encounter? Not wanting to walk barefoot, Hye-jin asks him to find the other pair of her shoes, which he refuses. Later, he gives her the toilet sandals from a local Seafood Restaurant. As a modern woman who lives and builds her life in the city of Seoul, of course, Hye-jin refuses. But, humans usually do things outside their way when in an endangered situation. She uses it anyway and is comfortable enough. That’s the mark of her first tiny steps to adjust her life. Because from my view, other than to stir the plot, the pair of shoes might also symbolize the first beginning of Hye-jin’s growth. By throwing the barged stuff that she only fantasizes about, but does not need. To go back to the purpose of things.
Upon her wanders through the village, she encounters two children, a boy and a girl, who seems to be crying out of pain. One of them, the boy, in particular, got hit by his cute little friend and his baby tooth fell out. Hye-jin rushes to treat his teeth in the nearby pharmacy. Later, a divorced couple bickering in front of a seafood restaurant. She walks the boy home and realizes that it’s the name of a restaurant that is imprinted on her sandals. Well, although it’s awkward again, sometimes connected events and dots keep on happening to us like it is fated.
The lady offers to repay her kindness with the meal but Hye-jin refuses since she is not familiar with receiving kindness or being indebted. But, the lady insists so she orders a seaweed soup, as a way of celebrating her late mother’s birthday. She also gives a clue about how Hye-jin will rebuild her life, as the lady hints on how one of the minus things about his hometown is that the dental clinics are too far away, it takes 30 minutes, while there are so many villagers that would probably line up to get their dental career.
Later, the lady gives out my most favorite dialogue from the entire episode, “Gongjin harbor feels like my later mother’s embrace to me.” I think that dialogue leaves a deep impression of me. It also explains Hye-jin’s situation. She needs warmth, an intimate and rich connection to adjust her life once again. Due to how we see her previous workplace environment, where you measure things with materials, rather than their core values and purposes, being part of urban life might become suffocating.
With her earning, she can afford to open her own clinic at Gongjin, but her pride intervenes. “Opening a clinic in the countryside? Don’t be silly.” But that’s the main point of the whole series, to see Hye-jin’s growth. After she lost her dazzling expensive pair of shoes, her car engine won’t start, and worse… the electricity and signals go off in the entire Gongjin. Hye-jin finds a cafe that runs by Oh Yeon-Seo, a 90’s singer which she does not acknowledge. Unfortunately, the Americano sucks that she won’t even take a sip out of it. The child of the Cafe owner assumes that her bag is fake and she’s a scammer. Nothing seems to go on her way.
Going around cashless, she’s in trouble when the ATM machine goes down. That’s where our Chief Fong comes in. Later, she put down her pride and ask to borrow 4,000 won for an Americano she has waste from him. Doo-Sik, who since the beginning always does plenty of work wholeheartedly asks her to follow him around the village to earn her money. “I’ll show you how to earn money through valuable works,” he said. On their way, Doo-Sik visits the elder villagers and kindly tells them about the situation. One of the most meaningful scenes is when he informs the deaf elder about the electricity shut down. The deaf elder woman rewards them with milk. Unlike the pricy Americano, Hye-jin enjoys the free rewarded milk full of warmth.
Hye-jin gets curious about what he does for a living since people have been calling him Chief Hong, but he refuses to answer since she’s still considered as an outsider. Later they arrive at the place where Hye-jin will earn her 4,000 won. Yup, fish market. She will be working to remove innards from the squids with the elder fisherwomen. Something that she finds unworthy due to the low wages and fishy works. But again, she does it anyway.
I love how the elder fisherwomen explain why they work to remove the innards from the squid when Hye-jin naively said she doesn’t understand the importance of the job. They clean the squid and send it somewhere to dry before it becomes the delicious dry squid that people enjoy in entire South Korea. An excellent explanation about low wages does not always define the value of the work itself. The scene is intended as a metaphor for the journey of achieving something.
Thank to removing innards from squid, she earns enough money to survive a night at Gongjin since her car won’t function until the next morning. Chief Hong informs her about the nearest sauna with a friendly budget, also, because she smells like squid already. Hye-jin helplessly decides to sleep in the nearest Sauna, where she once again meets Chief Hong, this time, as a cafeteria man. After the encounter, she wanders to the rooftop since there are bugs in the room (a very typical urban person behavior). She later looks at the stars that shine upon her and wishes her later mother’s birthday.
Meanwhile, Chief Hong panicky goes to grandma Gam-ri who hurt herself because of working. He later piggybacks her for a night walk so she won’t feel lonely. We get to see a glimpse of Doo-Sik’s past, how Gam-Ri always feeds him 999 meals after his grandmother passes away. Her kindness touches his heart to the extent that he is willingly to devote himself to help the villagers even though nobody pays him big deals. Loving how the scenes show the intimacy of their relationship.
Though we’ve just started this, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha season 1, episode 1 already points out the difference between Doo-Sik and Hye-jin in the most realistic way. Both are equally independent and stand by their moral values. But yet, how they approach life is so different. Doo-Sik is more open. He knows the values to give and receive because he receives love in the darkest way, while Hye-jin is more reserved to receive love and kindness since she’s used to coping and dealing with herself alone. It shows when the boy whom she treated before shows his gratitude, and also when Mrs. Kim Yeon-Ok calls her to say her gratitude for saving her from being scammed by her former dental clinics.
After quitting her job, Hye-jin made up her mind to move to Gongjin, leaving Seoul behind. Doo-Sik helps her with almost everything. From renting her house, her clinics, to renovations and all. Of course, he ain’t doing it for free; Hye-jin must pay all of his works with minimum wage per hour. He later offers himself on doing the renovation for her, yet she hesitates. Later, he shows her a long list of licenses, from a certified plumber to home decoration, leaving her speechless.
As we know already, Hye-jin is not easy to please. She asks for a modern, European-style interior for her house. Well, our Chief Hong never fails to do his job. After all the renovation is done as she requested, she begins to pack her things and start a new life in Gongjin. The neighborhood is surely excited and curious about the new pretty woman next door. Doo-Sik later visits her at night to check on her things and to inform her about the village rules. He also hands out her doorlock number that he makes using his birthday number which leaves her cringing.
After all hustles on moving in, adjusting life from a big city to the countryside takes time for our Yoon Hye-jin as she remains with her uptown girl lifestyle. From not being familiar with engaging the neighboring communities to how she dresses. She wears legging and a crop top during the morning run which surprises the elder women. While jogging, she stops by to look at a photo of grandfather and a little boy who is smiling through the old photoshops. She smiles and refers to his smile as “the mischievous one.”
Later, the landlord invites Hye-hin to the elder’s party at the community town hall. She hesitates at first but is convinced when she tells her to announce her upcoming grand-opening dental clinic to the neighborhood. She comes to the town hall where she encounters Dong-sik who is busy taking pictures for free. She warns her to not snap her camera on her because she respects her photo’s rights but Doo-sik secretly takes a photo of her from behind.
Gam-ri offers Hye-jin a bite of delicious meat wraps in kimchi, she accepts it using a spoon but refuses to eat it due to hygiene preferences. After the neighbors gather to approach her, she starts her unintentional rants about how she does not go the maker since they do not provide the high-end shampoo brand with a nice scent, she also complains about the mosquitos and the little crack on her house that is unpleasing to the eye.
The worst scenario is yet to come. While everyone is having the time of their life, Hye-jin excuses himself to take a phone call from Mi-seong. She accidentally caught of guard bluntly badmouthing about Oh Chun-Jae, or should I say, Oh Yeon’s music and how he is wasting time on pursuing it even though she has not yet listened to the whole album he gives her. She is not aware that she talks near to the microphone and it happens to be on. The neighbors are all bewildered by her words. Oh Chun-Jae goes to clear his mind in the harbor where Doo-sik comforts him. “She’s right, though,” he said. Right before she opens her clinic, everything just went downhill for her.
Feeling guilty and humiliated, Hye-jin is thinking about going back to Seoul. Later, Doo-Sik comes to deliver Hye-jin’s overseas packages and also words to confront her actions today. He warns her to be respectful and not act almighty. Not even catching a breath, Mi-seon suddenly appears in front of her house while crying. She later asks Mi-seon to move in with her.
The next morning, Hye-jin goes for a walk with Mi-seon. It turns out, rumors spread faster than the speed of light. Hye-jin faces the consequences of being outcasted by the local communities. The neighbors throw shade and avoid her. She helplessly cries in the street while Doo-sik watches her from afar. The misfortunes continue. During the opening day of her dental clinics, nobody from the town comes.
Meanwhile, Doo-sik is practicing making coffee while guarding at Oh Chun Jae’s cafe. When he comes back, he murmurs to himself why is his customer never his coffee. His daughter bluntly says that his coffee isn’t good in the first place. A double kill for Oh Chun-jae in just a day. After being slapped by reality, he self-loathingly says that he is good for nothing and helplessly laughs at himself. Doo-sik nags his daughter and later finds the recorded tapes of Oh Chun-Jae’s demo tracks that he threw away, possibly after Hye-jin’s words affected him. He transfers all the tracks to his computer instead, saying that is the way people listen to music nowadays. But Oh Chun-jae refuses to play the tracks, saying that he’s just out of age and talent for his dream.
At night, Hye-jin opens up to Mi-seon about her ongoing feud with the neighbors. Mi-seon advises her to give out rice cakes to the neighbors. Hye-jin runs her problem away with late-night jogging instead. Again, using leggings and a crop-top. Doo-Sik happens to pass by while riding a bike. He approaches her and offers her some advice on changing the way she dresses since the town is different from Seoul. Older popularity dominates the town. Hye-jin finds it exhausting but Doo-sik knocks some sense that it’s her choice in the first place to open a clinic here, in the other words, she should be the one who adjusts herself. Doo-sik asks her whether or not she has handed the rice cakes to the neighbors, which she hasn’t, which leaves him bewildered.
To win the heart of the people for her dental clinics, Hye-jin listens to his guidance and starts handing rice out to all of her neighbors. Everyone awkwardly accepts the rice cakes, including the children she meets on her first day at Gongjin. In return, they ask her help to keep a cute little hedgehog for them but she refuses it at first because she has not intended on having a pet. Later, one of the children badmouthed her behind her back saying that rumor has it that she is a cold-hearted lady. Hearing that, she forcefully accepts the hedgehog but ends up pet it anyway.
After handing out the rice cakes, the clinic is still running out of customers. She begins to lose hope. Doo-sik comes to visit her clinic. “Giving out rice cakes is not enough because you’re insincere,” he mumbles. He later asks her to follow him if she wants to regain the community’s trust and build her clinics in the town. She later follows him to the neighbors meeting. Not having any courage to face them, Hye-jin plans to go back but Doo-sik insists on her because the only way to win their heart is to confront them, rather than avoiding them. Meanwhile, the neighbor squads are busy badmouthing her here and there inside. Hye-jin awkwardly comes to the room. After they notice her, the atmosphere is uncomfortable enough that it makes you want to go home. “We’re sorry that the neighbor meeting hall does not meet your standard,” said one of the neighbors. But later Doo-sik comes to the rescue with bags of snacks to support the meeting. He claims that Hye-jin is the one who buys everything for them. And just like that, the atmosphere turns brighter.
After the meeting ends, Hye-jin thanks him for his help. She later asks him to stretch her hand. She does it and… well, what to expect. He gives a long list of receipts. “You know where to put the paycheck, right?” he said. Yup, Doo-sik is kindhearted, but the man knows what he is doing. Everything that comes from the heart also has minimum wages.
The next day, Hye-jin and Mi-seon boringly wait for their first-ever customer until… someone enters the door. Both of them are bewildered, so is their first-ever customer from the town. “Is the clinic open?” By hearing it, both of them are thrilled. Meanwhile, Doo-sik is practicing his barista skill at Oh Chun-Jae’s cafe. He receives a call from Hye-jin’s first-ever customer, saying that the dental clinics are great and praises her competencies. Also, the price is reasonable. He thanked his recommendation. After that one happy customer, the clinics begin to be loaded by the customer until there’s no time to rest for our pretty dentist! On the other side of the shore, Doo-sik calmly reads a novel by Henry W. The highlight of the book is mesmerizing and immersive within Doo-sik’s characters, “What I desire is the fruit and flower of people.”
After serving her patients with dental care, Hye-jin reflects on Doo-sik’s words, “Life is not easy for all of us. Some spend their whole lives on unpaved words, while some run at full speed only to reach the edge of a cliff.” She finally understands his words and gives time to listen to the effort of Oh Chun-jae’s album.
The next day, Hye-jin passes by the cafe and awkwardly encounters Oh Chun-jae who happens to be coming out from the building to smoke. She gathers her courage to approach him. At first, Oh Chun-jae is not interested. Her words still affect him. Later, she tells him that she finally listened to his album. She sincerely says that she did not really enjoy listening to the title tracks that he mentions but she really enjoys listening to “Blue Scar on the Heart” because the melody fits her style and she can relate to the lyrics. She apologizes for what she said back then. And that’s where she successfully enters his heart. After their encounter, Oh Yeon finally gains the courage back to play his demo tracks. Yup, sincere words and appreciation matter.
Yup, our perfectionist Hye-jin is busy dressing for the engagement ceremony of her university colleagues in Seoul. Since pride and prejudices go hand in hand in Yoon Hye-jin’s world, she impulsively spends her budget on overseas clothes. Doo-sik, who has been coming back for packages to packages, asks her about all the spending. While Hye-jin is all about styles, Doo-sik finds clothes for its convenience. She later informs Doo-sik that she’s going to Seoul on the weekend. To add something, he secretly praises her beauty saying that a face like hers is rare in Gongjin. She unintendedly throws unnecessary words to Doo-sik by comparing his face to a spit gum in Seoul. Well, our Doo-sik remains unbothered. But, these are the start of everything for today’s episode: to humble the tongue of Yoon Hye-jin.
The next day, Hye-jin is surprised to see Doo-sik, who dresses accordingly and her three haelmonis (grandmas) welcomes her in front of her house. Doo-sik asks her to gives rides to the three elder women who want to visit their family in Seoul. Without room for further negotiation, Hye-jin forcefully accepts his favor. Keep in mind that Hye-jin dislikes meddling in other people’s business nor getting caught up in one. On their way to Seoul, one of the grandmas brings potato cakes for the journey, Hye-jin refuses to eat it while Doo-sik unwantedly puts the cake in her mouth. Later, the entire potato cakes shatter the car due to the dangerous drivers that almost cause an accident for them. Hye-jin rises her bar and tries to catch the car, she later asks the driver to be more responsible for his driving but gets mocked for being a woman instead, but our haelmonis is coming to the rescue and spitting fire to his face, leaving everyone speechless.
Her struggles continue as Hye-jin has to deal with stopping at numerous rest stop areas due to the three grandma weak blenders. Later, Doo-sik and the grandmas enjoy singing in the car, Hye-jin asks them to stop because she prefers to drive quietly. “You’re such a party pooper,” Doo-sik nags. One of the grandmas asks about Hye-jin’s background, from her hometown to her ancestors, and her parents. Everyone suddenly goes silent after Hye-jin tells them that her mother has passed away when she was still a child. Doo-sik looks at her quietly.
After dropping Doo-sik at the front of the urology center, Hye-jin attends the engagement ceremony only to hear them mock her by bragging about their luxurious life and success stories. They also shade her about being late due to being a hometown girl. While they try to provoke her while Hye-jin, who is known for her shabby words, starts to backfire them about growing clinics with an amazing view and exposure in rural areas. She also disses them for being narrow-minded since the rural area is steadily growing and being the only dentist in town is such a privilege for her. And just like that, she successfully puts them on silent mode. Well isn’t it ironic how Hye-jin spends the amount of time and money for a party that only brings her down and makes her uncomfortable?
On her way back to the car, she is caught staring at the heartfelt moment of a mother and daughter who bid their farewell upon her marriages, until Doo-sik calls her out which triggers her panic since she’s worried what her colleagues will think of her if they see her together. Again, pride and prejudices go hand-in-hand with Hye-jin. In the car, Doo-sik offers to take turns driving and touch her car desk, Hye-jin lightly punches her hand and refuses to take turns. Hye-jin goes on blabbering how she does not like people who cross the line and touch her belongings. So far, Doo-sik always seems to confront her boundaries. She later talks about her craving to drink a bottle of wine near the Hanyang river or visiting a great restaurant that serves one of the tastiest pasta in Seoul. Meanwhile, Doo-sik prefers eating marinated crabs and drinking by the shores. Yep, these two are living worlds apart but collide.
After a long ride, Hye-jin pampers herself. She receives a notification on her colleague’s group chat which turns out to be her photo with Doo-sik is being exposed. Feeling anxious about the prejudices that come her way, she immediately types to clarify that he is not her boyfriend and they just happened to meet each other. Before she clicks enter, the group chat suddenly fills with positive feedback saying Doo-sik is cute and they look good together, which later makes her delete her words and send that she’s not interested but he keeps on chasing her anyway. Oh, my Hye-jin. Well, the famous-group-chat-cute-guy is in the middle of making candles and reminiscing the time where Hye-jin carefully lowers his car seats so he can sleep comfortably. But later, we also get a glimpse of how Doo-sik is having trouble sleeping and consumes pills to put him at ease.
The next day, Ms. Yeo and Doo-sik causing a fuss in the town hall due to the anonymous people who keep on throwing trash. They demand to install a camera to track down and monitor the area, also, the parks ignite at the dental clinic as Mi-jeon is crushing with their first-ever patient, who happens to be a police in Gongjin. One day, Doo-sik brings Gam-ri to the Hye-jin’s dental clinic after noticing how she has experienced trouble eating due to her teeth. After conducting an examination, Hye-jin offers to give her an implant to help her condition. Gam-ri refuses due to asking Gam-ri whether she ran out of money, which offends her. After failing to persuade her and hearing Gam-ri endlessly brag about her successful son and grandaughters, Hye-jin asks her to leave.
Gam-ri offendedly walks herself out of the clinic. Doo-sik comes back to her office and nags her about how she should have put the words in a good way. Hye-jin finds it too bothersome, besides she will not conducts anything without her patient’s consent. Doo-sik still emphasizing the way she communicates and she argues that Gam-ri is not her grandmother. Doo-sik is thrown off in disappointment by her words. Once again, their world contradicts one another. Hye-jin finds Doo-sik too nosy, while he finds her too self-centered. But the main problem is, they just barely know each other to fully understand each other’s shoes.
At home, Hye-jin can’t seem to stay still because Doo-sik keeps on mistaking her. Mi-seon notices how her besties have never been so warmed up by someone before since she begins to rants about him. Speaking of the devil, Doo-sik calls her late at night to meet. Doo-sik asks for a favor to conduct Gam-ri’s treatment and lies about certain things to persuade her since he will pay for her treatment instead. He also shares a story about how Gam-ri really loves squids, but even though she’s been working with squids for ages, she hasn’t eaten them for years. Hye-jin refuses to do it because it violates the values of a doctor and she will not change her decision out of pity. Doo-sik negotiates about paying the treatment and explaining Gam-ri is the most selfless person he knows, that’s why it’s burdensome for her. Hye-jin, on the other side, thinks that what Gam-ri did is selfish, which leaves Doo-sik bewildered.
The two get into another argument. Hye-jin gets emotional. She argues that the most important thing a parent can do for their family is to take care of themselves and stay healthy. She leaves afterward. Through the silence, Doo-sik remembers the day where she finds Hye-jin staring at a couple of mother and daughter who are going separate ways after her marriage and how she shallowly tells about her mother has passed away. Meanwhile, at home, Hye-jin reminisces back to her youthful days where she is staring at the sundae shops she used to enjoy with her mother. She later buys it with her money. After coming home, she excitedly looks for her to enjoy sundaes together only to find her mother is throwing up in the toilet.
After getting splashed by water on his first attempt at persuading Gam-ri, Doo-sik comes to Gam-ri’s house again. This time he did not bring any money, but Hye-jin’s words. Doo-sik initiates to help wash the laundry. The wind of Gongjin blows and the sound of the bells fills the day. “I really love the bells you hang.” Gam-ri smiles. Doo-sik later tells Gam-ri that the best thing that parents do for their children is to stay healthy. The words seem to affect her. Later, Gam-ri calls her busy son, “I’m very busy but I can spare minutes to talk.” It’s is quite saddening and relatable at the same time how we only spend minutes to talks to our parents as we grow older. Later, he asks Gam-ri about her teeth condition because Doo-sik informs her. Gam-ri excitedly asks for her son’s opinion on getting an implant and unfortunately, he asks to delay her treatment due to the financial situation. Gam-ri has no option but to understand.
On the other side, Hye-jin is out for lunch with Mi-seon with squids and other seafood dishes. She remembers that Gam-ri really loves squids but hasn’t got a chance to eat them for years. She later eats in discomfort after realizing how the squids and other dishes are too hard to chew especially for elders. Hye-jin makes up her mind and tries to persuade Gam-ri to receive her implant. Upon arriving in front of Gam-ri’s house, she hesitates, but Gam-ri notices her first and asks her to stay for dinner. She serves her with a potato dough soup, Hye-jin surprisingly finds the soup delicious. Gam-ri later plays her favorite records. She begins to excitingly blabber about her father who served the country during the war, the origin of her name that comes from the national flag, and of course, her golden boy Doo-sik. This scene also explains why Gam-ri asks Hye-jin about her ancestor and the importance of knowing them at the car.
Later, Hye-jin asks Gam-ri to come again to her clinic. She emphasizes how it feels to have a toothache, it’s hidden but greatly painful, not even your own children will understand it. Gam-ri empathizes with her words, especially after her son offers her to delay her treatment due to her granddaughter’s tuition fee. For the first time, Hye-jin puts aside her pride and offers a discount for her treatment but asks her to keep it a secret. Gam-ri feels burdened, but Hye-jin sincerely tells her how she wants her to enjoy squid again since it is her favorite food, just like how her mother loves sundae. “Doo-sik must have said something to you, right. He’s kindhearted but too nosy,” Gam-ri mumbles. Hye-jin smiles and agrees to it.
As the wind blows, the chuckling sounds of the bells ringing fill the night. “Doo-sik hung it for me,” Gam-ri said. After watching her phone calls with her son, I understand how the bells bring comfort to her silent days. That’s probably why she’s fond of it and he hangs it so she doesn’t have to feel lonely.
The next day, Gam-ri willingly comes to the dental clinic while bringing all the money she has earned for the love of her squids. “After working like a dog for years, don’t you think I deserve to enjoy squids?” She declares. Hye-jin smiles and warns her to enjoy it once a week. On the other side, Doo-sik once again is busy dealing with the divorcee couple that endlessly bickers, but Ms. Yeo still gives the cucumber kimchi that her ex-husband craves after spending their son’s birthday together. Well, from the tense Hye-jin and Gam-ri encounters to Ms. Yeo and her ex-husband, good food brings people together.
Suddenly Doo-sik’s phone rings, Gam-ri asks him to bring porridge. Doo-sik rushes her way to her beloved grandma anxiously, turns out she successfully put her implant in leaving Doo-sik in surprise. Gam-ri tells her that Hye-jin visited her yesterday and offered her a discount so she can receive her treatment right away. She feels relieves that her prejudices upon Hye-jin are wrong; she used to think that Hye-jin is a sly fox. “On the outside, she’s as cold as ice. But she actually got a soft heart. She must have gone through a lot,” she explains. Well, Doo-sik is also surprised by the facts over Hye-jin visiting Gam-ri. Yup. How you communicate things is very important and everyone has reasonings for each of their choices.
The night has come at Gongjin. While Hye-jin washes her hair. the electricity went off. At the same time, Doo-sik arrives in front of her house. He lights a candle to light the room and checks the fuse box for her. After calling the electricity department, he offers to accompany her for a while. She candidly offers him ice cream and just like that, both of them enjoy their ice cream in an awkward atmosphere. Doo-sik is bewildered by Bo-ra’s hedgehog and teases her that they look similar. Hye-jin mumbles how he does not accept Bo-ra’s favors on taking care of her hedgehog. “I don’t take things that are alive.” He said oddly.
Doo-sik apologizes to her for misjudging her when he barely knows her. He also expresses his gratitude for successfully persuading Gam-ri on treating her teeth. Of course, this time.. Hye-jin is the one who is bewildered. Doo-sik later pulls a tissue and wraps it on Hye-jin tiny hands, because her ice creams start to melt. After that, he thank her for the ice creams and leaves. Not even five minutes after her depature, Hye-jin receives a text from Doo-sik. He asks her to check her fuse box. She is astonished after finding out that the other pair of her favorite heels are inside. She rushes outside and calls Doo-sik to asks him where do he finds it. Well, little did she knows that the shoes literally come to him by the shore while he goes fishing and he meticulously dries it.
As she put on her shoes, the light turns on. Her dazzling smiles fill the silent night as Doo-sik rides his bike while chuckles with a smile on his face.
