Yours And Mine

What once was, what might have been

Zaiex Axverifzor, 14 y/o, a grade 7 junior highschooler. A game geek and science nerd. Wearing glasses and what seems to be a v-neck sweater with a button up shirt underneath. Despite his personality and character, he seems to be so friendly and caring. He is much closer to girls than boys, that is why most his classmates are thinking he’s gay or at least his boy classmates. Zaiex, admits that he likes guys and gals all the same, but no one knows he mostly is attracted to guys. He likes some of his classmates, but most of them are a bully to him. They’re teasing him, making jokes about him and sometimes touch him or get close to him in an uncomfortable way. Because he is mostly a pacifist type, he tries to avoid conflict as much as possible, he also doesn’t want others close to him to be affected by his problems so does his best to keep all his problems all to himself.

It was his first day in high school. All new faces and new friends. Zaiex will attend a school called Polytechnic Higschool and College Institute. A famous school for having wide variety of sports and academic activities. Zaiex never cared which school he goes to as long as he gets to read and play instruments and secretly play soccer as well. He’s not that athletic but playing soccer was one of his dreams to play for sports. His parents chose this school since one of his 2 childhood friends are going there also. It may be the best school for him, but little did he know it’s a school that will change his life after graduation.

“I’ll be going now.” Zaiex shouted to his grandmother and mother. “Take care. Don’t forget your umbrella okay? You always tend to forget them.” Her mother exclaimed. “Ugh! I know. I won’t. Bye!” Zaiex replied scurrying off. He then arrived at school, it was just a 10 minute walk from his house. As he arrived at the front gates of the school, he then met up with his friends.

“Hey Zai! Good morning.” A chubby girl with a beautiful voice and face, and funny as well, wearing the school’s uniform, checkered skirt and u-necked sweater with button-up shirt underneath with a small red necktie, came up to him. The girl’s name was Lily Mifleur, she is her friend since 4th grade. Accompanying her is another girl, quiet, but really smart, and sometimes is bullied as well. Her name is Asche Jeoyun. “Hello Zaiex. Did you enjoy the music video I sent you yesterday?” Asche asked. “It was great! The lead vocalist was cool, but I liked the pianist better. No hate ofcourse.” Zaiex laughed. They kept on talking about music and bands. Students hustle and bustle about the school grounds, and as the three are about to enter the school gate, a person rudely bumped into him almost pushing him down. Zaiex looked up and saw his former best friend, Aiden Auvern, bulky, a bit taller than him, has a spikey white blonde hair. Has a thuggish look on his face with a scar on his cheek. Even though he looks like a thug, he still wears school uniform but he is wearing a dog tag and with a small earing on his left ear. Aiden approaches them, towering over him. “Watch we’re you’re going next time.” Said Aiden with a stern and intimidating stare. “Let’s go, we don’t have time for this loser.” Aiden ordered his friends leaving Zaiex and the others. “The nerve! You should be the one watching to where you’re going.” Said Lily with an annoyed faced. “Are you alright? Let us help you up.” Asche said while pulling Zaiex up.

“I’m alright. It was nothing. I’m strong as a dense rock!” Zaiex laughed and he flexed his right arm. “There you go again.” Lily and Asche grinned. “Let’s get go the classroom now. Homeroom is about to start.” Asche exclaimed with a hurried expression. In Zaiex’s mind, he can’t help but feel terrified of Aiden. They were once good friends in grade school but something changed between them that were too sensitive for Zaiex to remember. Clearing his mind, they continued to go to their classroom.

The bell rang and it’s time for their home room. Their homeroom teacher, 24 y/o major in Physics, tall and handsome with a blue neck tie and a button-up dark blue shirt and a black coat, with matching black slacks and sienna colored loafers. He also wears a pair of reading glasses and a well-groomed swept up black hair. The teacher started speaking. “Good morning class. I’ll be your adviser for the rest of your first year. My name is Leo Thornhart. But you can call me Sir Leon” With a deep but soft voice, he enraptured almost all girls within the room. Mutter is stirring up within the room. Zaiex avoided staring at him for a long time. “He’s so handsome… Huh? Hey, I know he’s your type.” Lily shoves Zaiex on his side with a teasing face. Zaiex replied nervously, “N-No! Shut up Lily!” Leo cleared his throat, regaining the class’ attention. “That’s enough. I will hand out your schedules now. Review your schedules, after that, we’ll get each other acquainted.”

After a few minutes… “Okay. Let’s start with the young lady on my right.” Pointing at Lily, she stands up with excitement on her face. She stands upfront and writes her name on the board. “Hello everyone. I’m Lily Mifleur. But you can just call me Lily” She started to sing out her name. Everyone in class laughs by her sense of humor but was admiring her beautiful voice too. “Thank you for that… sound display of an introduction Lily. Next please.” Leon said. Next up is Zaiex. He stands up and as he gets in front, he saw Aiden at the back of the class staring out the window with solemn expression. He turned away his attention, then composed himself and started the introduction. “Hi. My name is Zaiex Axverifzor. You can just call me Zai.” Everyone started muttering, “He looks so nerdy, look at his glasses.”, “Yeah. But he does look cute too.”, “Man, that guy is getting attention. He’s so annoying.”, “I bet he’s lonely” As he looks down the floor out of embarrassment, he saw slightly that Aiden took a small side-glance at him, but it was too quick he just shrugged it off and went back to his seat. “Thank you Zaiex. Next up please.” Next was Asche, and then the rest of the class made introductions successively.

Finally, it reached Aiden. He went in front and uttered his name. “I’m Aiden.” Looking at the class and quickly making a glance at Zaiex. He started to go back to his seat. Taking his seat, he let’s out an annoyed sigh and continued staring out the window. Making a back glance at Aiden, Zaiex seemed troubled by him but in a worried expression. The teacher clears his throat. “Now that’s the last of the introductions. You can now go to your classes. We will discuss about who will be the officers tomorrow. That’s all.” With a cool posture, he leaves the class.

Everyone began to stand up and started preparing for their next classes. “What’s your next class Zai?” “My next class is General Science, how about you Asche and Lily?” Zaiex replied to Asche. “Well mine is Social Studies” Lily replied. “I have Music class.” Asche said. “Awww! You have Music as your first class. So lucky!” Lily exclaimed with a pouting cute face. “Hahaha! It’s all right Lily, we all have the same classes, but in different times and classrooms that’s all. Well, I have to go. See you guys later!” They dispersed and went to their respective rooms.

“Let’s see room 105. Room… 105… Ah here it is” Zaiex opens the door, and then suddenly fell down with a thud. “Man! I seem to be clumsier than usual today. Agh.” Zaiex muttered while holding his back. A tall guy hovers over him and offering his big calloused hand to help him up.” Wincing in pain, he accepts the help and stands up. “Are you all right? I’m sorry! I didn’t notice you coming in.” With a worried husky voice, he touched Zaiex in his arms trying to look for any injury. “I-I I’m all right. Sorry I was not looking where I was going.” He looks up and saw a handsome person with dark blue eyes and dark brown hair. “Thank… you…” Star struck, he can’t help but stare at him. Then he noticed the man was still holding him. Feeling embarrassed, he looks away and pushed him slowly. “Wait… Is that you Zai?! It’s been a long time! How’ve you been?” Confused, he looked at him once again and tried to discern his face. “Don’t you remember? It’s me, Damian Landor. Your classmate during grade school.” “Damian?” Thinking hard, he finally remembered. He is a cool and goofy person. He likes books, not much of sporty person. He was also the Student Council Vice president during their time. “Right! Damian. I’m sorry, I forgot” “It’s no biggie! I know you have a bad memory. Hahaha” Damian smiled. “Shut up! You don’t have to rub it in.” Zaiex grumbled cutely. “I see you’re as cute as ever even when complaining! Hehe.” Damian chuckled.

While trying to catch up with each other. Aiden appeared behind them. “Get out of my way you annoying little pricks.” He passed through them while bumping his shoulder onto Zaiex’s. “Was that… Aiden? He has changed. Why is he like that to you all of sudden aren’t you guys close before?” Damian said. “Yeah… Well it is something I am not keen on talking about. Let’s just… sit for the class.” They slowly sat on their seats, having Damian sit beside Zaiex. While Aiden goes at the back of the class with his other friends that looks so intimidating and scary. He tried to avoid looking at them and just talked with Damian. The teacher then arrived. “Hey everyone! I’m expecting good things from this class. I am Hannah Pearl Blithe. You can call me Mrs. Hannah” The teacher said with a bright smile but with stern look and a hint of strictness into it. “Okay, to start off… Can anyone tell me what General Science is?” Then the class started.

The subject lasted for 2 hours and then it’s time for… Recess! “Hey Zai! Wanna have some snack together? I saw earlier that the school canteen is having a triple chocolate espresso with croissant combo. I know how much you like your coffee!” Damian jumped with excitement. “Hahaha! I see you still remember that much huh? Sure let’s go. Oh and I saw on my way to our classroom, there are some benches at the back of the west side of the school with few trees for shade as well. We could have it there!” “Sounds like a plan! Let’s go.” Damian started to drag Zai, holding him by the arm with a big grin on his face. “Hey! No running in the hallways. You irresponsible highschoolers!” A teacher screamed. “Sorry sir!” Both exclaimed with such enthusiasm. As they left in a hurry, Aiden and his friends went out the classroom, Aiden looked at them with serious yet annoyed face, it’s as if he looks at them feeling disgusted. Not taking a second look, they left as well.

“Uh oh! Looks like there’s a big line forming already. Zai, you go on ahead and get a spot on one of the benches. Leave the ordering to me. My treat!” He winked at him while giving thumbs up. “You sure? There are a lot of people here, you might need help.” “I’ll be fine! I am a black belter in Taekwondo after all” Damian showed with confidence and flexed his muscles. “Hahaha. What does that have to do with getting in line? ... Well if you’re serious. I’ll be waiting there then.” Zaiex went on ahead at the back of the west side of the school to reserve a bench.

When he arrived, there was group formed near what seems to be like an apple tree. With curiosity, he went closer and closer then he heard a faint violin playing. He tries to squeeze in and then he saw a guy about his height and age, but a little pale in skin color and a soft silky long purple hair. When he’s almost out of the crowd, he lost his footing and then fell right in front the student violinist. With expert hands, he caught Zaiex within his warm and soft embrace while still holding the violin and bow. The stranger asked with concern and gentle tone. “Are you alright?” “I’m fine. Sorry for stopping your performance.” Zaiex stands up and then the crowd screams “Hey man! You interrupted his performance!” And it was getting good too!” The stranger calmed the crowd down and told them he is done for the day. The crowd scattered with sounds of disappointment. “Again, I’m sorry for disturbing your performance. It was clumsy of me." “It’s alright, if I hadn’t caught you, you might have injured that cute face of yours.” The student smiled brightly. “C-cute? Hahaha funny you said that. I get that a lot” Zaiex replied in shyness. “Hey Zai. You seem to be well contented there. Hehehe” Asche teases him. “Wha… Asche?! How long have you been there?!” “Oh! Long enough to see you fall into his arms.” Asche chuckled. “By the way. My name is Fafner Mezzart. And you must be Zaiex. Asche here told me about you. Guess she was right” Fafner grinned. “Wait, What? How… Oh! you guys must be on the same class then. Wait… Right about what?” Fafner closed in on Zai, where he can almost feel Fafner’s breath on his cheeks. “You know what I said before… You, being cute” Fafner whispered under his breath. “Wha… wha... Asche! Why’d you have to say that to him!” “Well he is right isn’t he? Also… How long do you plan to be in his arms Zai?” Asche said with teasing look. Zaiex instinctively moved back quickly while still holding a shy and embarrassed expression. Both laughed because of his cute response.

While they’re still talking, Damian finally arrived. “Zai! There you are, the combo almost ran out, I was able to snatch the last one, Aiden almost spilled the coffee tough, good thing I caught it expertly. Wait… who are these people?” Zaiex introduced the two of them and the scene that just happened. “I see… I’m glad you’re all right, Zai.” Damian smiled while tapping his back. “Yeah, thanks again Fafner.” “It’s no big deal. I will always catch you if you ever fall… For me that is.” Fafner replied while winking and smiling back at Zai. Damian reacted with a bit of annoyance. He just smiled back at him to respect him for saving Zaiex.

They started to eat their snacks together. After talking for a few minutes, they leave to go to their next subject. “Well it was nice hanging out with such lovely people, especially you Zai. I bet we’ll see each other again soon” Fafner winks and smiles at him. “Yep! I’m sure we will. Let’s go Zaiex, we’ll be late for the next class” Damian smiles back while wrapping his arms around Zaiex’s shoulder it’s as if protecting him. Fafner and Asche waved goodbye. As they turn their back Damian made a stern and determined expression and said in his thoughts… “I won’t let you go all buddy-buddy with Zaiex. You’d better watch out Fafner.” While in Fafner’s thoughts… “It seems I have a contender… No matter… Let’s see who wins him first. Damian…” With that, both are now aiming to get closer to Zaiex. While Zaiex is still blissful from what could potentially be a love competition.

“Well Zai. This is where I leave you. My class is on the second floor. It was nice to catch up with ya. See you later!” Damian waved. “See ya! Okay… Next class is Social Studies. That’s where Lily was. I wonder if she just finished. After all, we have different schedules so her recess must be after ours.” Zaiex muttered. As he was walking down the hall, he noticed Lily coming out the Social Studies room, when he was about to call out to her, he saw that he is with someone. A guy with goldenrod hair and white skin with great posture. With critical eyes still attached to his features, he remembered that he was one of the people that was hard to approach because he’s a rich and famous guy during their grade school, and was considered as the most liked guy within the whole school. Zaiex wondered why Lily was talking to him so casually and in a fun tone at that. He hid behind the corner of a room still trying to look at them. He didn’t bother to follow and greet them because he was ignored by that guy before. Instead, he just silently tiptoed into the Social studies room without giving them another glance as the two disappeared down the stairway. He then entered the classroom for his next class. Although he can’t help but remember all the things that has happened before. He spent the rest of the class worrying, unable to focus on the lecture. Alas, lunch has arrived. Zaiex texted Asche and Lily if their classes are over as well. Both replied that they would not be able to come to lunch early as it overlaps. He wanted to contact Damian as well, but he forgot to ask for his number. Alone, he went to the cafeteria and ordered a cheesy bacon with garlic rice and mushroom soup on the side. Seeing that all the table are occupied he decided to do take out and eat back in their own classroom.

Alas he finally arrived their home room classroom. The room was not fully occupied so he slowly entered and taken a seat that is near the windows, not paying attention to any of his classmates. After sitting down, he ate his food quietly and enjoyably. In the middle of his meal, he began to stare out the window.

The sun shining down on him and the wind flowing through caressing his hair. While still and quiet, on the other side of the room is Aiden looking at his phone with a disgruntled expression. He slammed down his phone atop the table with a loud thud. “Damn it! Why can’t she freaking understand. Argh!” Aiden exclaimed angrily. Everyone was shocked and a bit scared of his sudden outburst; however, it would seem that Zaiex was unfazed, still blissfully looking out the school grounds. Aiden stood up, made a back turn and saw Zaiex across the room. What seems to be an unbreakable growling expression that Aiden was wearing, suddenly turned into a wide sinister grin, it’s as if he wants to mess with him. He slowly approached him. And when Zaiex was about to take another bite, Aiden appeared in front of him and ate the cheesy bacon off from his fork. “Waah!! What the…” Startled, he was unable to mutter any words, he looked at Aiden, then started to sweat and blush a little cause Aiden was so close to Zaiex’s face. Aiden was chewing slowly trying to savor the food he just took from Zaiex’s fork. Zaiex made a big gulp and then he avoided his intense gaze, still afraid, he asked Aiden. “Uh… umm what do you… w-want... A-Aiden? Can’t you see I’m eating.” “What?! Can’t I enjoy a meal with my most ‘precious’ friend? Did you really think I was going steal all your food?” Aiden said with a condescending and sarcastic tone. “I.. It’s not that… It’s just that you didn’t ask if you wanted some.” Zaiex replied while still looking away. “Tsk. Look at me nerd.” Aiden stood up as he slammed both his hands atop the table then slowly inched his face closer to Zaiex. Using Aiden’s right hand, he held Zaiex’s chin to make him look up. “You think I didn’t notice earlier? I now you’ve been taking a looking at me like a whimpering dog, asking for a treat from his owner. After all isn’t that what you’ve been doing back in grade school? You always followed me around like an obedient little pup you are.” Aiden said with a straight and unwavering stare at Zaiex. Unable to control his emotions he spurted out his frustrations with a loud voice as he stood up. “What do you mean? I was your best friend! That’s why I was always with you! Besides, aren’t you the one who was always getting in the way of everyone when people are trying to hurt me? Why did you change so much huh? Was I not a good friend to you? Tell me Aiden, what did I do to you for me to deserve this kind of treatment!” Zaiex cried, trembling in his arms and legs, unable to break his intense and yet crying gaze at Aiden. The atmosphere turned glum and suffocating, students inside the room gradually left the room trying to avoid the fight between the two. After a few seconds of silence, Aiden replied in a quiet and angry tone as he looked down the floor and clenched both of his fists. “Hmph, yeah right... What DID you do… Tsk.” Aiden started to leave the room without another word while kicking a few table around because of his frustration. Zaiex started to look away as he was leaving then started tearing up, still shaking from anger and fear. In Zaiex’s thought… “Why did you turn out to be this way Aiden. Was my kindness not enough for you? I cared about you so much. But then you were the first one who started to avoid me back then. It made me hurt so much having to lose my only best friend… You didn’t know Aiden. You…. freaking didn’t know…” Zaiex started to cry harder for what he was trying to avoid reliving, which suddenly became a burning arrow that pierced his heart once again. “You didn’t know Zaiex. I’ve done all those things for you, you were the one who truly understood me among what I thought was my ‘friends’ You didn’t know how I was hurt back then when I saw you with... with... Argh!!! Leaving you was even harder. Why is it different now? You don’t freaking understand. Zaiex.” Aiden clenched his fists harder almost making his palms turn red, and then a few tears started to fall down his face

Zaiex didn’t managed to finish all his food. Trying to collect himself, he looked at his watch and he noticed his next class was about to start. Clearing his face from all the tears, he went ahead to the next classroom. He directed all his focus to the class in an attempt to forget all that has happened.

The school day has ended and the sun started to set. Zaiex collected his things and went out the school grounds to meet with Lily and Asche. “Hey Zai! How was your classes? Mine was tons of fun. And I made lots of friends too.” Lily ecstatically expressed. “We both know that it won’t be hard for you to befriend almost everyone you meet Lily! It’s no brainer really. Hehe” Asche chuckled. “Yep what Asche said. Well mine was okay I guess. I wish it went better though.” Zaiex sighed heavily. “Aww.. Well tomorrow is another day. I’m sure it will go way better.” Lily comforted him. “Yep! Besides, you said that you’re strong as a dense rock aren’t you?” said Asche. “Hahaha! You don’t need to remind me!” Zaiex laughed. The three of them began to leave school. As they reached outside the gates, Zaiex stopped midway and took one more look at the school as if expecting someone to appear outside the school entrance. “Hey Zai! What are you doing? Let’s go! I still have some piano practice.” Lily shouted. “Sorry! Wait up.”

The day has ended, for Zaiex it seemed so long and tiring just because of what has happened at school with Aiden. After brushing his teeth and short hot bath, he turned off the lights, and plopped down his bed and hugged his pillow tight. Atop his nightstand, he noticed his picture with Aiden where they are crossing their arms behind each other’s back while smiling brightly together. Zaiex couldn’t take much more of the painful past he had experienced, he covered his face with the pillows and he started to utter under his breath with sad and longing feeling… “Aiden… I missed you… Please… Come back…” He closed his eyes, and a rush of tears came gushing out. The night went cold and from his shivering cries, Zaiex began to finally fall asleep, while still carrying the burden of his best friend hurting him.

The Club

June 8, Tuesday. 05:50 AM.

Zaiex’s alarm has woken him up. He started to stretch his arms and stood up to open the curtains. It was a fresh and wonderful morning, feeling refreshed without worrying what happened yesterday, he started preparing for school. “Ah! What a great morning! Okay time to go to school and be the best student ever… At least in Science. Hehe” Zaiex shouted with such enthusiasm and confidence. He said his goodbyes to his family as he walks out. Then suddenly someone bumped into him and fell down on his back. “Wargh! Agh… Not again, ugh! … Have I been clumsier? Maybe I need to change my glasses.” A guy crouched down to check on Zaiex, while putting his right hand on top Zaiex shoulder and his other hand at Zaiex’s left arm. The guy is a few inches taller and a bit older than Zaiex and with great build. Has a chestnut hair reaching up to his shoulder, with a tanned skin tone, one can also notice that he has a few facial hair. As he looks up, he also noticed he has bright golden eyes. Again, he started to stare and admire the guy. Then the guy asked with a low husky voice… “Are you alright? I’m sorry. Are you hurt anywhere?” Feeling warm and safe from his soft yet firm hands, he can’t help but feel at ease. After making sure Zaiex’s fine, he helped him up and cleared any dust around his clothes. “Thank you. I’m sorry. I’m usually not this clumsy, maybe I just need to change my glasses. Haha” Zaiex laughed. “Haha. No problem, glad you are all right. Say, that uniform, are you attending Polytechnic Higschool and College Institute (PHCI) right?” The guy inquired. “Oh! Yeah, I am and it seems that you are also going there by that handsome look of yours… Ah! Err… the looks of your uniform.” Zaiex spurted out with embarrassment. “Hahaha. Yep. I am, actually a 1st year college student there. Which you can notice on the emblem on my necktie.” “Oh! It is quite different than my necktie. So that means you’re my senpai! Woops sorry. I’m a bit of an otaku myself, couldn’t help it.” Zaiex looked away shyly. “Haha you’re funny. That’s fine, besides its true. I’m also otaku. So, since we’re going in the same direction, wanna go there together?” The guy invited him with a bright smile. “T-t-together?! Me and you?” “Yeah! There’s no one here besides us right? Come on! We don’t want to be late. We can talk on the way.” The guy replied to Zaiex. Him and Zaiex walked happily towards the school together, enjoying each other’s company and sharing about anime and stuff.

Alas they arrived at school, Zaiex remembered he didn’t get to ask his name. “Oh! I forgot to mention my name. I am Zaiex, a junior highschooler. Nice to meet you!” Zaiex extended his hand. “It’s a pleasure Zaiex, I am Lan.” Lan shook Zaiex’s extended hand. “Well. I shall go now. It was fun hanging out with you, let’s do it again sometimes, all right?” Lan uttered with eagerness. “Sure thing! That’d be awesome. By the way here’s my contact, so you can reach me!” He positioned his phone beside Lan's and exchanged their contacts. “Cool. Thanks Zaiex, see you later!” Lan waved with a huge smile on his face. After exchanging their goodbyes, they each went to their separate school buildings.

“Okay time for homeroom. I wonder if Lily and Asche is already there?” Zaiex wondered. He finally arrived their homeroom classroom. He noticed that Aiden is nowhere to be found. He sat on his chair and continued without worrying about it. “Hey Zai! Good morning.” Lily happily shouted at Zaiex from across the room. “Settle down Lily! It’s early in the morning. But you sure are happy today.” “She said that a senpai helped her pick up his books when he bumped into her and this guy turned out to be a handsome one” Asche explained. “Is that so. Hahaha. Don’t go drooling on me now.” Zaiex chuckled. “Oh shut up! Let me daydream once in awhile. Ah! My prince!” Lily sighed contently and went back to daydreaming. Then after a few moments, the homeroom teacher arrived. He started to write out titles on the board regarding the positions for the classroom officers.

Students started to vote out for the President. In an excited and instant moment, Lily mentioned Zaiex. “I vote Zaiex as our class President!” “Lily! What are you doing, keep it down!” Zaiex disputed. “Yeah. I agree. I mean considering he was a class president before.” Asche stepped in. “All right. I’ll put him here for now, anyone else want to be the candidate?” After a few seconds of silence, no one stood up or even showed hands, and so Zaiex became the class President in an instant. As for the Vice President, a girl stood up and volunteered herself to become one. She has a long black hair, white skin tone, has black eyes and is wearing a pair of glasses and seems to be smart and calm looking girl, not to mention she has good features as well. “My name is Akihiko Vanderson. I’d be honored to take the position as Vice President” No one in the class seemed to protest and they all agreed to let her take the position. “Good. Now, you two get up front and do the rest of the recruiting, I’d be watching.” Leo suggested. “Sigh. All right, Vanderson, nice to meet you. Would you please do the honors of writing on the board as I go?” “Aki” Akihiko uttered in a soft tone. “What?” Zaiex asked with confused expression. “You can call me Aki” Akihiko said with a bit of shyness in it while sorting out strands of her hair behind her ear. “Oh… Uhmm All right, Glad to know you Aki. So here’s the chalk.” Zaiex and Akihiko started to open the remaining positions, surprisingly, it went by pretty well. For the secretary, another girl with pinkish shorthair and a few cute accessories in her hair that is a bit shorter than Lily but is funny as well. ”Len Tsuyu here!” Next is for the treasurer and auditor is unexpectedly occupied by fraternal twins, one is a boy who is cool and collected, with glasses and short blonde hair and is voted as the treasurer, the other one is a boy that’s energetic and a bit dumb , he has a gray spiky hair and with eye glasses too. “I am Kaiyo Tenshi.” “And I am Sora Tenshi his awesome big brother!” In Zaiex’s mind… “Man… We sure have… unique officers.” “Okay. Everyone, if you need anything or if there are any trouble you can approach them and they’ll be supporting me and the other teachers. Please help and support the officers as well. Got it?” Said Leo. Everyone in class replied in all positive attitude.

After Zaiex and the others have settled the officers, Leo started to discuss about the extra-curricular activities they should be doing for the rest of the year, which includes joining one club, which will be essential to the school activities they'll be having. “Okay class, that’s all for home room, since we’re still in adjustment period, the school traditionally appoints the second and third day for all students to be acquainted and familiar themselves with the students and school and provide opportunity to look for a club they want to join.” Everyone in the room started cheering. Zaiex and his friends already knew which club they wanted to join.

The class left their classroom and went straight to the school gym. The three friends gleefully went to the school gym and saw it was packed with students and was full of various booths of club. “Hey! I’m gonna go straight to the music club, see you guys, Later!” Lily sang to the top of her lungs as she jetted off. “That Lily. She sings everything whenever she’s that excited. Well Zai, I’d be going as well, I’m thinking of joining the dance club. See you!” Asche left calmly. As the two disappeared into the crowd, Zaiex began looking for the soccer club.

While scanning the various booths, someone from a booth has called out to him. An arm has wrapped Zaiex behind the shoulder with a surprise jump. Struggling to stay in his toes, he saw that it was Damian. “Zai!! Found you! Are you looking for a club? Come join our martial arts club! I’ll teach you all sorts of fun things! What do you say?” He calmly removes himself from Damian’s tight and firm grasp and then he replied… “It’s so nice to see you too Damian. I’m surprised you’re learning martial arts. Thank you for the offer, but I’m already set on a club, but I still haven’t found it yet.” “Aww man! Are you sure? We could have lots of fun together!” Damian pleaded with puppy eyes despite having a buff body. “I’m sorry Damian. I’ve already decided, but we can always hang out together, and you can still tea-“Zaiex was cut out mid-sentence when another person has called him from a nearby booth. He turned around and saw Fafner coming to him. “Hey Zai! Fancy seeing you again today. Would you like to join our music club? I’d be thrilled to have you.” Fafner beamed. “Oh hey Fafner. Good morning. Ahh well, I am already have a club in mind, I love music but, I was thinking of doing sports during high school. I’m really sorry!” Zaiex replied. Damian flinched seeing Fafner. Damian straightened himself and appeared beside Zaiex, and put his big hands on Zaiex’s shoulder. “Hey Fafner. I was just talking to Zaiex here and I already invited him to our club.” Damian smiled as he maintained an intense stare at Fafner. Unflinching, Fafner returned the same intense gesture. “Oh? Well I’m sure I’ll be able to change his mind, after all he saw me play the violin yesterday, that should’ve been enough to sweep him off his feet.” Fafner devilishly smirked at Damian. Zaiex started to feel awkward being in the middle of what seems to be an American shorthair cat and German shepherd fighting over the attention of their owner. Zaiex deeply sighed and closed his eyes as he separates the two. “Now, now you two. That’ll be enough. Let’s just be nice and I’ll try and check out your clubs when I have time alright? Seriously, what’s with you guys.” Zaiex sighed in relief and the tension died down slowly as the two agreed, releasing their intense gaze at each other and fixing their attention back at Zaiex. “I’ll get back to the booth now Zai. See you around!” Damian waved. “Me too, Zaiex. I’ll wait for you!” Fafner winked. “See you guys.” In Damian’s mind… “I’ll show you Fafner. Zaiex will join my club soon enough.” In Fafner’s mind… “Just you wait Damian, Zaiex is already in my sights, and I’ll be there to effortlessly strum his heart strings.”

With a calm sigh, Zaiex continued on his search. After a few minutes of looking around, Zaiex finally found the booth for the soccer club. There was a beautiful, cheerful and brown short haired girl, which seems to be the club’s manager. He approached and the girl greeted Zaiex. “Hello! Are you here to sign up for the club? If so, you can just put your name here.” The girl provided the list of joining members and Zaiex started to blush a bit for she is definitely cute for him. He then redirected his attention and signed his name on the paper. “Oh yeah! If you’re interested you could come tomorrow and watch a scrimmage of our club with another school? It’d be a good way to see the team play and learn the members as well. It’d be starting tomorrow at 9 AM.” The girl mentioned with enthusiasm. “Really?! I’d definitely watch it. Thank you so much. Uhhh…” Zaiex wondered what her name was and the girl replied happily with a big smile. “Oh! I am Lucy Sherbet. Manager of the soccer club.” Lucy has stunned Zaiex by her bright and cheerful presence. After a small conversation with the rest of the club members, Zaiex left the gym to get some lunch.

“Man. Why are the two of you not answering my calls and texts? It’s lunch now. They shouldn’t be taking that long. Argh! Well I guess I have to go there alone. I’m used to being alone anyways. Sigh!” Zaiex went to the cafeteria, but on his way there he passed by the music room. He is hearing a faint piano playing from the music room. Curious, he opened the door a nudge to see who is playing the piano. After a few minutes of playing, he didn’t notice that he was already inside the room with the guy playing the piano, fully captured by the bittersweet sound that was resonating across the room. A bright sunlight was shining inside lighting up the pianist, and a small wind was wafting through the small gap between the windows making the short and wavy goldenrod hair of the player to sway with the flow. The player left Zaiex speechless and small tears fall down the side of his cheeks after a calming end on the piece. Then the pianist stood up and asked Zaiex. “Hey! Sorry, didn’t notice you. Umm, Hello? Are you all right there? Did you enjoy the piece?” The sophisticated man stood in front of Zaiex making him flinch a bit. Struggling to find the words, he introduced himself in a nervous tone, but after a few seconds, he calmed himself down. “That piece was Memories of Waves and Light from Final Fantasy right?” Zaiex asked. “Yeah! You know the piece as well?” “Yep. It is one of my favorites. I’m still practicing on playing it on the piano as well. This piece really hits my core every time I hear it. But the way you played it, it was full of sadness and longing. It made me tear more than I could’ve anticipated. It was so beautiful!” Zaiex beamed with excitement. The man noticed Zaiex’s deep dark eyes is sparkling from the light shining through, as if he was enraptured by Zaiex’s positive and upbeat reaction from his playing. The man was unable to find the words to describe his ecstasy to Zaiex’s reaction, so instead he began to introduce himself giving out a wide grin. “I am Ren Andante. Nice to meet you” Ren extended out his hand to shake Zaiex’s. He gladly shook his hand. “Say… What are you doing here anyway?” “Ah. Well, I may or may have not arrived early because of the audition for the music club. I was about to go here with Lily but I lost her in the crowd at the gym, but she contacted me and told that I should go ahead.” Zaiex grumbles under his breath… “She had the time contact you but didn’t try to reply to me. Hmph!” “Uh what was it Zaiex?” Ren asked. “OH! Uh sorry it’s nothing. Haha. Wait! How’d you know my name?” Zaiex was surprised. “Ah! Well I was talking with Lily yesterday and she mentioned you a lot. You guys are good friends huh?” Ren giggled. “Ah I see. Seriously, why are those two keep on talking about me behind my back!” Zaiex griped. “Hahaha. Anyways, it’s nice to finally meet you Zaiex.”

Ren and Zaiex began talking for a while, and then Zaiex raised a question where he asked why he was playing that particular piece with such emotions. Ren replied… “Well… It’s a long story, but whenever I remember a specific depressing memory or when I’m sad in general, this song helps me express myself and get myself over it. Honestly, that memory, it still hurts just mentioning it, but I can’t bring myself to forget about it really. Still, the song I played, I have done a duet with it with someone I really cared about, it’s the only precious memory I have of him.” As Ren started to reminisce about the past, tears welled up, and fell down his cheeks while still maintaining a smile on his face. “Oh! I-I I’m sorry I brought it up…” Ren said while wiping his tears. Well, I think even if he’s not with you right now, he’d be appreciative of you making that memory alive, even if it hurts.” Zaiex placed his hands on top of Ren’s clenched fists and looked at Ren with sincere sympathy. Ren looked back at Zaiex, and understood his calming presence and desire to help, with that he slowly removed his remaining tears and thanked Zaiex. “Thank you so much Zaiex for your help. I can’t believe I cried like that, it’s been a long time.” “It’s my pleasure. I’m glad you’re doing better.” Zaiex smiled back at Ren for assurance. “Oh shoot! Look at the time, I haven’t eaten lunch yet. Say, do you want to have lunch with me? I can’t contact Lily and Asche.” “Sure! The auditions will not start for a few minutes.” Ren and Zaiex went to the cafeteria to grab some lunch. For lunch, Zaiex grabbed spicy rice cakes and pineapple juice, while Ren got Caesar salad and some tuna on the side paired with strawberry milkshake. Both enjoyed their meals and talked about music that interests them. After a few minutes of chatter, Ren said his goodbye to Zaiex, and left him his contact.

As they parted ways, Zaiex continued on exploring the rest of the campus, while enjoying the rest of the day checking out the booths and students running about the school grounds.

The next day… “Oof! It’s almost 7. I can’t believe my alarm clock didn’t sound off! I’ve gotta go, don’t want to miss the scrimmage.” In a flurry, Zaiex put on his clothes, grabbed a slice of bread from the dining table, and dashed out the house heading towards the school. As he left the dusts in his path, Lan noticed him, but was unable to call out to him. “Oh! Zaiex sure can run huh. I guess he forgot that I was his next-door neighbour. Hahaha. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll see him today out on the field.”

With 5 minutes to spare, Zaiex arrived at the school. Lily and Asche are already waiting inside and went to their homeroom together.. “All right. I assume most of you already joined or at least have prospective club. This is the last day to join, so you guys better get your butts moving. Now I’m going to check attendance, then after that you can go to the gym.” After Leo took attendance, everyone left towards the gym. “Hey Zai! I got accepted in the music club along with Ren. Speaking of Ren, I heard from him that you guys hung out yesterday. I’m glad, also he said he reminded you of someone, that’s why he was so excited during the auditions. ” Lily said. “Really? Congratulations to both of you! Oh? Hahaha well he’s a nice guy, and he plays the piano really well.” “Doesn’t he? I really admired him ever since I first heard him play during 6th grade “Well. I’m glad you passed Lily, I for one, have passed the auditions in the dance club as well. And get this, I have a senpai there that’s really cool and he has a good build with a dark skin color. And he dances pretty awesome too!” “Wow! Congratulations Asche. Also, can you introduce me to this senpai of yours? Pretty please?!” Lily pleaded with sparkles in her eyes. “Okay Lily! You’re fangirling hard again. I’m sure Asche will be able to introduce him to you soon. So cool your jets.” Zaiex said.

The three finally arrived at the gymnasium. They perused the booths, looking at the brochures and posters and other peripherals that the clubs are giving and showing to the students, some are giving out food as well. After a few hours of walking around and eating snacks from the booths that give them, a phone suddenly went out. “Oh! Shoot. The scrimmage is starting in a few minutes! Guys, I’ve gotta go. Let’s meet later for lunch alright! Bye!” “Tch. Ah! Zai Wait!! Aaaand, there he goes. He sure runs fast huh. Well, now that he’s gone let’s go check out the other clubs Asche."

Outside the soccer field, the two teams are now doing their warmups. Zaiex then arrived still panting from the running. He looked for a few available seats among the packed bleachers. He saw an empty seat where the home team are resting. As he sat down, he looked at the players across the field. He scans the whole field and among the crowd of the players, he saw the home team coach is talking to what seems to be the team captain, which wears a number 1 at the back of the said player’s soccer shirt. Being curious, he stood up and leaned closer the separators to take a closer look at the team captain. With critical eyes, he took admiration from his cool getup, and manly stature, and as he looked even closer… “Wait… Is that?!” His eyes dilated from the surprise, he noticed that the team captain was Lan, the guy he met yesterday near his house. He was unable to take off his eyes from Lan, from the mere shock of finding out that the guy he met was the captain of the soccer club, knowing this, he felt that his heart just skipped a beat.

“So… How long are you planning to keep staring at my brother like that?” Zaiex startled, and he noticed that Akihiko was standing right beside him. “Ahh!! A-aki? Wh-what are you doing here? I was not... I mean I’m not… Ahhh… hold on, did you say brother?” Akihiko explained his relationship with Lan. Then Zaiex explained how he met Lan and why he’s there to join the club and spectate the scrimmage. “I see. Well I’m sure he’d be happy to have someone join the team with such passion and love for soccer. Since the game is not gonna start in a few minutes just yet, let me call him over. Hey! Big brother. Look here, I have a friend who is joining your club he says that he’s your big fan!” “Wait! Akihikio… I didn’t exactly say a big fan, I just really love soccer. Come on stop screaming like that!” Akihiko waved and shouted to Lan to gain his attention, and with a successful attempt, Lan waved back at them and as he saw Akihiko pointing at Zaiex, he gave off a big smile and cool salute with a matching wink at Zaiex. Seeing the gesture, Zaiex felt like a love-piercing arrow just struck him and he felt light headed, Akihiko supported him and sat Zaiex down, then she started fanning out and comforting him. After calming him down, the whistle started to go off, signalling the start of the game. “Zaiex. It’s starting! Don’t miss this come on snap out of it!” Akihiko lightly shook Zaiex. As he woke up from his excitement, Zaiex and Akihiko started cheering on the home team.

The game went on, the ball flying and rolling through the whole court. Players running around, coaches giving off signals and strategies, the crowd going wild making the noise of the cheers from both team balance out. Neither of the team wants to back down, with just a few minutes left and the scores are tied 1 to 1, the home team and opposing team are determined and are trying hard. Then suddenly the ball ran into the corner of the opposing team when the home team attempted to kick the ball into the goal. The umpire called a corner kick to the home team, and have the team captain to kick it back to the goal. The opposing team made a wall to block the goal, seeming impossible, Lan composed himself and took a deep breath. Among the stands, Zaiex shouted out to Lan, cheering him on with all his might. At the last second, he heard Zaiex’s cheer, and this gave him a big smile and confidence boost. Feeling confident and calm, Lan took a deep breath and made a head start, and as he made contact on the ball with his side kick, the ball flew and made a sharp arc towards the goal, the opposing team tried with their wall covering Lan’s attempt but to no avail. As the ball closes in on the goal, the air is starting to get thin, the time slows down and everyone seems frozen in time anticipating the outcome. The goalkeeper tried to jump in front of the ball, and the ball flew past the keeper’s fingertips leaving an inch of space between him and the ball. Then in a split second, the ball has touched the net, the crowd goes wild and the buzzer went off signalling the end of the set of the game, making the home team the winner of the scrimmage. Everyone was cheering and the team are carrying the team captain and throwing him in the air. Despite being a practice game, everyone on the field are happy to have the game won.

After a few minutes, the excitement has calmed down, Zaiex and Akihiko were waiting in the bleachers, while the crowd dwindles down. As the other team members left to celebrate, Lan went towards the two. Zaiex approached Lan with such delight in his expression and complimented him from his play. Akihiko walked towards them and complimented his big brother as well. “Thanks you guys! I wouldn’t have done it without you guys cheering for me. And Zaiex it seems you’ll be joining our club huh? I saw your name on the list, and I was so surprised and glad. I’ll be looking forward to playing with you.” Lan patted Zaiex on the head whilst smiling and thanking him from his support. Akihiko protested that she cheered as well, and then Lan did the same to her. “Why don’t we take some lunch together and talk about some things .It’s on me, how’s that sound? Lan asked and both agreed happily. The three spent the rest of the day together and chatting with each other.

Afternoon has arrived, school is now ending, and every student are now preparing to go back home after a busy day. Meanwhile, Akihiko left early leaving the Lan and Zaiex alone as they both agreed earlier at lunch to have a few practice shoot together. At the field… “So, I’ll be guarding, and you’ll be shooting. Show me what you got rookie!” “Don’t underestimate me, senpai!” Both challenged each other with unwavering determination and courage. Zaiex has attempted several close shots, and he is starting to pant from kicking hard, but all shoot doesn’t seem to faze Lan one bit. When all seems to be no change of result, Zaiex remembered a move from one of his favourite soccer players. Feeling desperate, he made a long head start, and as he got near the ball, he scooped up the ball with the side of his right foot, lifted up the ball slightly off the ground, and pushed the ball upwards making the ball rotate and then the ball flew in a curved arc. As he finished the kick the ball already went inside the goal, passing just right around the left cheek of Lan, which rendered him motionless from the surprising shoot. With a thud, Zaiex has fallen to his knees, gritting his teeth while a few sweat falling down his face. He proudly said to Lan with a big confident smile on his face… “I won Senpai. I told you to not underestimate me.” “Haha. Well, well... I really didn’t expect that. Congratulations. You beat me. To commemorate this, I’m gonna give you a big huddle!” Lan spread his arms wide open inviting Zaiex in. “Wait! Isn’t that supposed to be done with a group?” “So what? Come on! Don’t tell me you don’t like hugs.” “It’s not that. I mean look I’m all dirty and sweaty.” "I'm dirty too. Hurry and give your captain a hug!" "NOOOOOOO!!!!" The two kept arguing and Zaiex began to run away from Lan for being persistent. Lan started chasing Zaiex, and with a big leap, Lan finally was able to grab him by the arm. When he got hold of Zaiex’s arm, both lost balance and fell down the ground. With Lan towering down on Zaiex with his arms making a support at both sides of Zaiex’s body, and Zaiex laying down facing up Lan. In that moment, the sun is already setting; both are out of breath, sweaty and dirty. Silence dominated the atmosphere around them; a small gust of wind went past by Lan’s bulky figure, making his hair wave and his top shirt flow where his toned abdomen is peeking.

Zaiex was starting to feel hot and restless. He couldn’t leave his eyes towards Lan whose returning a captivating gaze with his bright golden eyes. Lan finally started to speak with a low and husky voice… “Finally caught you. Guess you’re not running as fast you thought you were huh? Just like this morning.” “Wait… How did you know I was running this morning?” Zaiex asked and snapped out a bit from his trance. “Hahaha. We are next door neighbours, but you left in a hurry that’s why you didn’t notice I was right behind you.” Lan chuckled. “Wha—Ahh!! I’m so sorry I didn’t notice.” “It’s no big deal. Besides, I finally have you pinned down, so you won’t be able not to notice me anymore.” Lan said with a sincere and yearning expression in his eyes. Zaiex was unable to respond from the awkward yet pleasing situation they are in, without batting an eye, Lan went closer towards Zaiex, and when his face is at a position that would be an uncomfortable distance from others, he positioned his face at Zaiex’s side and whispered softly sending tingling feeling across Zaiex’s body because of his warm breath… “Game, set, match... Zaiex.” As he uttered those words, Zaiex jumped and lost his romantic excitement, Lan quickly stood up and laughed. “Hahaha. You’re so cute when you’re flustered. I thought of messing it up and see your reaction.” “That’s not funny senpai! You’re such a tease. I hate you!” “Aww come on! I’m sorry. But I gotta say that was a cool kick. You really had me surprised. I know you’ll be a great soccer player.” Lan pulled and hugged Zaiex tight and thanked him for giving him company and showing his skills. Finally, the awkwardness and tense atmosphere disappeared as they cooled themselves down and went back inside the school gym.

Feeling refreshed after getting out of the showers and wore their new set of clothes, the two left the campus and walked together back home. “Hey Zaiex. The team has decided to go eat and hang out together this coming Saturday. Do you want to join us?” “Oh… Well I’m sorry senpai, but I have plans on that day. Thank you for inviting me though. Maybe next time?” “Oh... That’s all right. There’ll be plenty more chances.” Lan exclaimed but with a bit of disappointment. “Well here we are. Thank you for today senpai. I really enjoyed seeing you guys play.” “I’m glad you enjoyed it, and I had fun with you today too…” They paused for a bit, struggling to find the next words they want to say. Lan worked up the courage and approached slowly towards him and hugged him gently, making Zaiex feel the warmth and safety from his embrace. “Zaiex, I want you to know that… I’m really happy that you’ll be joining the team. It really made my day…” Stunned, a flurry of earnest and desirous feeling began to well up inside Zaiex, he then decided to return the hug and rested his head onto Lan’s firm chest. After a few moments, Lan walked towards his house and left Zaiex with a warm and sweet smile on his face and uttered softly… “Sleep well Zaiex. I'll be seeing you tomorrow.” As Lan disappeared into their house, Zaiex waved and stood silently outside their house gate. And in that brief yet precious moment, he became paralysed from what he felt from his sincere and charming presence, their bodies interacting with an electrifying sensation, wishing that it could have lasted forever. A feeling that he just started to experience for the first time in his lonely and single life.

It's not what you think!

Saturday came, all is well, weather is clear and the neighborhood is calm. People are strolling, walking their dogs and cats? One can say that the neighborhood is indeed unique and strange. As for Zaiex, he woke up and opened the windows, and then a warm breeze came in greeting him with a nice comfort. Feeling refreshed, he fixed his bed, brushed his teeth and went downstairs to prepare his breakfast. A warm chocolate milk, with matching peanut butter and jelly sandwich. “Morning son! You sure are up early. Any plans today?” Her mother greeted him and got some milk and eggs out the fridge. “Hey mom. Well, I seem to be a bit clumsy recently, so I thought of going to see our optometrist.” Zaiex replied. “Huh?! Why would you want to be going to the optometrist? Isn’t being clumsy normal to you by now.” Zaiex’s mom giggled. “M-mom! I am NOT clumsy, okay? I’ve been bumping into people since the start of the school, so maybe I thought my eyesight is getting blurry.” “Is that so… Do you want me to go with you? You might hit a pole or something this time.” Zaiex’s mom sarcastically exclaimed. “Wha- MOM! Your making me sound like I’m going blind?!” Despite a rowdy morning caused by their silly bickering, Zaiex faintly heard his phone’s ringtone. He stopped his argument and his Mom stopped as well, calming the situation down. He then picked up his phone, opened the messaging app and saw an unknown number sent a message to him. With mild nervousness and curiosity, he calmly checked the message and saw it was from Damian asking him if he has plans today. He chuckled slightly, then he happily replied. “For a second there, I thought someone who potentially my stalker got my number. Good thing it was just you Damian.” And in a few seconds, Damian replied… “Hahaha! I’m sorry. I wanted to surprise you. So, do you have any plans today? Our club activities were cancelled and I thought we should hangout for old times’ sake, what do you say?” With a huge grin on his face, he ecstatically agreed and told him to meet him up in a fast-food chain in the main city.

After finishing his breakfast and prepping himself to go see Damian and the optometrist, he scurried off with a skip. Zaiex has arrived at the main city of Paopiance called Paofu Compass Square. He waited for Damian in front of a fast food chain called WcDonalds. Meanwhile, just beside the fast food’s alleyway, there are three students ganging and beating up another student. The rowdy commotion was being muffled by the noise of the crowd around the block for Zaiex to not even notice. After a few minutes, Damian has arrived, and the fighting between the students seemed to have died down then the three went away and left the bruised and weakened student on the ground. All along, the beat up student was Aiden. A few scratches on the face, clothes all torn and dirtied, and a black eye on his right side. He is struggling to get up, but as he managed to support himself up while holding his stomach grimacing from the pain; he looked around to see if anyone is there. With one eye shut, he managed to notice from afar, Zaiex and Damian standing just outside the alleyway, talking and laughing. He was in an unbearable physical pain, but just seeing them together… was entirely a different and more excruciating pain. His face scrunched up, and he firmly clenched his fist, and then quickly punched the side of the wall with a loud thud. A drop of blood got out his knuckles from the strength he exerted, but his face seemed to have felt nothing. He just couldn’t bear the sight of them, his fist felt numb, and his whole body was trembling. His own body doesn’t know how to cope from all the discomfort. In response to the agonizing pain, an uncontrollable stream of tears flowed down from both of his eyes. It’s been a long time since he cried so hard. He was so confused and frustrated, the feeling he just felt was coming to him in a blinding flash, memories of the past came to him like a train that is unable to stop. He tried to wipe his tears away with his injured arm and hands, but no matter how hard he tries, the tears won’t stop. “Damn it! What is this?! Stop it you idiot! Argh!” With all the mustered hurt and anger, he kicked the trashcan with a booming clunk, enough to be heard by the two. Curious, Zaiex took a side-glance at the alleyway, and saw that no one was around but just a pile of trash strewn around. “What’s up Zaiex? What are you looking at?” “Oh… Uh it’s nothing. So… Shall we go? I forgot to mention that I made an appointment with my optometrist today. Would you mind accompanying me?” Zaiex suggested. “Really? Ofcourse! Let’s go!” Damian raised his hands while wearing a big smile. “Someone sure is excited.” Zaiex laughed. The two left to go to the optometrist, and on the other side of the alleyway, is Aiden clenching his scraped fist, still crying from the awful situation he has encountered. A reality that he has been struggling to escape from since the time that they have avoided and ultimately not interacting with each other.

The two have finally arrived at the optometrist, and Zaiex began to have his eye checked. “How is it doc?” “Well, you’re right eyes is 0.25 higher than before but your left eye is still the same. I will issue you a new set of glasses right now.” “Thank you Doc. I thought for a moment that I was becoming a klutz.” “Hahaha. Far from it. Don’t worry you’ll be able to see clearly again soon enough. Just wait here for a few minutes okay?” Zaiex patiently waited and after a few minutes, he got his new but same style set of glasses. As he got out of the doctors office, Zaiex fabulously showed Damian his new glasses. “How does it look Damian?” “Looks the same to me. But nonetheless, looks greay!” “Are you saying I’m basic?” Zaiex grumbled a bit and finally both laughed. Zaiex thanked the doctor and they left the store to get some lunch. They started walking down what seems to be a food street, where lots of stalls and stores are scattered about selling various scrumptious and fragrant food. They found a busy store that sells ramen. The two settled down and ordered their meal. “So… Damian. I’ve been meaning to ask, how’d you get my number?” “OH! Sorry, hahaha. I asked Lily for your number, she was really enthusiastic about it when she gave it to me. She was like… ‘Here you go Damian! I’m almost certain he’d be jumping like a kangaroo once you messaged him. Wink wink’ Like that. Hahaha” Damian chuckled. Zaiex started blushing from the weirdly good impression of Lily and then in his thought he started to sarcastically curse her. “I swear Lily, you’re starting to get on my nerves! If I get my hands on you I’ll beat the crap out of you!” “She was really excited too. But I can’t blame her, I’m excited as well to finally be able to hang out with you again!” Damian smiled. “Yeah… Speaking of hang out… It’s kind of convenient that you had time today to accompany me?” Zaiex asked. “Ah well... I was supposed to have Taekwondo practice, but our sensei is out to get her wife from the airport. And then I remembered you, so I texted you and I’ll ask if you have time to hangout and catch up.” “Ah! Well glad you’re here then. Thank you Damian.” The two continued to talk about school while eating. Damian asked Zaiex if he’s still considering to join the Martial Arts club. Zaiex still turned him down, but he can tell that Damian will not give up, as that is how Damian is even before, so persistent. While talking about the clubs, Damian thought of teaching Zaiex a few self-defense. He accepted and after their meal, they went out to a nearby park.

They finally reached a busy park, with a small kid’s play area and few people doing their own things. They looked for an empty clearing and started to work out the basics for the self-defense. “Okay, I’m going to teach you how to defend on various scenarios like a person puts out a knife, an incoming punch or kick, or even when someone shows a gun in front of you.” “Wait Damian… Did you say gun? I’m not sure if I can handle that!” “Hahaha. Silly! I’m not saying you should fight if the person has a gun from a distance, but to defend if someone placed a gun point-blank.” Zaiex sighed with a huge relief. “Okay. Let’s start. First is… “The teaching started at a slow pace, expertly and patiently instructing Zaiex the stance and footing. Zaiex was struggling to copy what Damian is teaching him. Without a second thought, Damian slowly approached him from behind. He casually and calmly holds Zaiex in his calloused and firm hands, gently positioning his arms and easing the tension from his shoulders. He then gradually closed his distance even more to Zaiex, still holding a calm and firm posture while trying to position him properly. Zaiex was struggling to not lose focus, because of the sudden peculiar situation they’re in. Surprisingly, he was able to hide his flustered self from Damian’s close distance and his being caressing him all over his body, feeling the warmth and yet careful presence. Zaiex can clearly tell from his gentle touch, that Damian is trying his best to be careful and is treating him like a delicate flower. As Damian is explaining the positioning while holding him, he took a small peek at Damian’s eyes. His eyes meets Damian’s focused expression, his hearing was starting to blur, and all he can see now is him moving his lips, his tanned face glistening in the sun light, and his hair flowing beautifully from the cool breeze, and few leaves falling from the background seems to complete the dreamy scenery. It was a blissful moment for him, this was his second time experiencing this, and he is still unable to process his feeling from yesterday’s circumstances. Then, in a split second, Damian started to look at Zaiex, and then he startled breaking off from the frozen time of whimsical moment. “Huh?! What?” “I said, clench your fist like this…” Damian released his steady grip on Zaiex’s fists, wondering why he was staring into space. “Are you all right? Looks like you went to another world or something.” He slapped his face with both hands trying to snap himself out. “Sorry! Lost in thought I guess. Where were we?” Zaiex asked. “Right. Let’s continue!” After returning focus, he shrugged off the awkward situation and just continued with the teaching.

Dawn is arriving, and Zaiex completed the difficult and intense hours of training with flying colors. In Damian’s mind, he felt relieved and happy that he managed to instill some of his knowledge to him, knowing that he will be safe even if he is not around to protect him. “Okay! You’re all set. No one can touch you now. Hahaha!” He grinned and placed both of his hands atop Zaiex’s shoulder, reassuring him. “What do you say we celebrate this with a few drinks! I’ll treat you.” Damian raised his arms, clenched his fists in celebration, and then began to turn and walk away. “Hold it Damian! We… We are too young for alcohol!” “Huh? What do you mean…? I already bought these ‘drinks’” Two juices in can came out from the vending machine near the park with a clunk. “Oh! You mean those ‘drinks’ Hahaha! Sorry! My bad.” Damian gave the orange juice to Zaiex and both of them looked for a bench to sit on and talk. “By the way Zai, what made you decide to go to the optometrist all of a sudden?” Damian asked. “Ah! Well you know the other day that I bumped into you? Actually that was not the only time I bumped into someone, I think within 2 days I at least ran into 3 people including you. At first I thought I was clumsy but then I figured it might be because my eyes are getting blurry.” Zaiex said. “Ah! Well good thing you got it sorted out then. Thinking about it, when you bumped into me it felt almost like a thin paper just hit me.” “Yeah… I’m so…. HEY! I heard that!” Zaiex shouted with annoyance and hit Damian on his arm. “Hahaha! All right, all right! How about a small kid instead?” Damian chuckled even harder. “Why you!! Stop it you goof! It’s not funny!” Zaiex almost let out a tear from embarrassment and anger “Okay, okay chill dude! Hahaha. I’m sorry, I just wanted to tease you.” “Hmph… Seriously though… Thank you so much for teaching me… I feel more confident and strong.” Zaiex smiled brightly at him with such sincerity.

The breeze is starting to go cold, the sun is slowly setting, making the sky grow bright red orange. The two silently took in the air and relaxed themselves. As they closed their eyes, a slight jolt in Damian’s mind came. A scary memory has been unearthed from Damian’s mind. Damian started sweating and jumped from the sudden flash of that memory. He slowly looked at Zaiex and he saw him all calm and smiling in peace. He opened his eyes and looked at Damian in return. Seeing him smile like that, Damian couldn’t help but frown and avoid Zaiex’s eyes. Confused, Zaiex put his comforting hands atop his clenched fist and then he asked what was wrong. “Hey… Damian is everything all right? Why did you tense up?” Damian hesitated for a moment to open his mouth. He then started to sweat a bit more. “It’s all right if you don’t want to tell me. Take your time okay?” After Zaiex’s comforting voice, Damian slowly uttered… “I-I was helpless… I didn’t know what to do then. I feel such a coward, Zai.” Zaiex started to worry, he crunch up his eyes and firmly held his trembling hands and consoled him by asking if he wants to talk about what happened.

“You remembered when I first met you? That smile you just did reminded of that one moment where you stood up against the bullies. They targeted me all the time because I was an exchange student and I had a petit body. In that moment, you were beat up instead of me. I was paralyzed by fear… They were kicking you around and punching your face. You ended up going to the nurse’s office full of scratches and bruises, but you still managed to smile brightly, asking if I was okay.” Zaiex tensed up from hearing the memory. His grip on Damian’s hand got stronger. “Yeah… I-I remember. But I couldn’t bear to watch you get bullied by them. That’s why I rushed in.” Zaiex replied in a worried expression. “That’s just it, ZAIEX! If I hadn’t been the weak and defenseless idiot back then. You didn’t have to end up that way. You could’ve suffered a serious injury because of me! I was so frustrated at myself. How could I be so pathetic? ” After letting out a loud uproar from his sudden outburst, he clenched his other hand and the liquid inside the can of orange juice spurted out from his tremendous grip, and then he cried helplessly. His whole body started shaking, and his hands are tightening even further quivering from anger. This was the first time he saw Damian lose himself from all the welled up emotions he has been holding. Seeing him, Zaiex instantly and gently hugged Damian. “Damian… It’s okay! It is my own decision. I wanted to you to feel that you belong then and become my friend. I would do anything for my friends, even if it means getting beat up. But… I’m really sorry that you’ve been feeling like this all this time. It’s all right now, please don’t cry. Besides, look on the bright side, if that unfortunate event did not happen, we wouldn’t be here talking and teaching me how to defend myself!” Hearing his uplifting reassurance and heartfelt care, it felt like a huge thorn has been removed from his chest. He started to calm down and the tension from his body dissipated. He lifted his head up and finally he returned Zaiex’s warm embrace. “Thank you Zaiex. I don’t know how long I’ve been holding this regret and helplessness. You know… You are the reason why I started taking up martial arts. I wanted to prove to you that I can become strong, and confidently say to you that I will protect you this time. I promise… I will not let any harm get to you again Zaiex. This I vow.” Zaiex flinched, but he made his embrace even closer and more firm, their bodies clashing together, making each other feel secure and warm. “Haha. Stupid. You don’t need to promise me anything. I’ll be careful, okay? Just having you close is enough to make me feel safe. So, stop the tough guy act and bring back the goofy Damian I know. You Demon! Just kidding! Hahaha” Zaiex laughed uncontrollably. Damian released himself from the embrace and started to chuckle as well whilst extending his arm out and ruffling around Zaiex’s hair.

Amidst their silly bickering, a disturbing noise is resonating between the trees. Startled, the two started to investigate the noise, and as they reach closer, they saw a girl in uniform and three boys in uniform as well where they are pulling her around and uttering indecent words at her. The two went out from the trees and Damian expertly pulled away the girl from their grip, and stood in front of the three students while Zaiex held the girl and put him behind him. “Now gentlemen, that’s not a good way to treat a lady. Please leave now.” Damian exclaimed with intense glare and unwavering voice. “Ohhh! Scary. Or what punk? You don’t stand a chance against us. Give up now when you still have a chance.” The guy wearing an un-buttoned shirt and has a pierced lip with purple hair spurted out and the suddenly held out a knife, threatening them. Damian’s gaze faltered a bit, but stood his ground firmly with his clenched fists at his side. The other two students sent out a bat and the other wore a brass knuckle. Seeing them using different weapons, Damian still held high, and he placed his fist in front of him, and positioned his footing in a strong and steady stance. Worried, Zaiex told the girl to hide behind the trees and then he quickly took a stance beside Damian. “Zaiex? What are you doing?” “I’m here to be your sidekick. I don’t want my ‘hero’ to be the only one fighting right?” “Hahaha. Well this hero will show how strong he is. Don’t fall behind now, sidekick.” “Stop talking and start fighting!” With those final words, the three rushed forward screaming all at once. They threw wild slashes, punches and kicks, but Damian and Zaiex dodged them one after another, seeming to not break a sweat. “Idiots! What are you doing? Keep hitting them! Argh! You’ll pay for taking our prey from us. Take this!” The purple haired guy positioned himself behind Zaiex and held the knife with both hands and then he quickly thrusts towards him. However, in an instant Damian rushed in front of the guy and he skillfully redirected the knife to the side and with a light movement to his side he raised his right foot high and slammed the guy down the ground with a loud crack. The guy was unable to stand from the intense pain, the other students stopped attacking and took the now unconscious boy away. The three left in a shameful run with their tails behind their back. “Phew. That was fun! I’ve never felt so alive!” Zaiex panted with a sigh of relief. Damian nervously rushed to Zaiex and touched both his arms looking for any injury. “Are you alright? Are you hurt?” “I’m fine. You big dummy. I can’t believe my hero saved me again. I owe you one again. Hahaha.” Zaiex giggled. “Phew! I’m glad. Those three didn’t know who they’re dealing with. I must say though, we make a pretty good team. Put her there!” Damian raised his arm asking for a high five. Zaiex returned with the gesture. After their small celebration, they looked around behind the trees and ask the girl if she’s hurt. But it seems that she already took off without a word. “How rude! She didn’t even thank us for saving her butt. We were almost harmed.” Zaiex grumbled. “It’s all right Zaiex. At least we saved her right?” “I guess you’re right… Oh! Look at the time it’s almost nightfall. We should get going.” The two shook off the dirt from their clothes, picked up their things and started heading home.

On their way home, Zaiex’s mom texted him. Zaiex checked his phone and she instructed him to buy their dinner. “Hey Damian! I’ll be heading this way. I need to buy some dinner for us. You head on ahead.” “Are you sure? I can come with you.” “No. It’s fine, there’s a store near our block, so it wouldn’t be that far.” “Okay. If you say so. Well then, you take care, and Zaiex. Thank you for today. I’m happy that I get to see and talk to you again.” “Me too Damian. Don’t be gloomy now okay? I know how to punch and kick now, so you’d better watch out if I see you frown!” Zaiex shouted and waved goodbye to Damian and they started to separate their ways. As Damian walked towards the direction of their house, he looked up the stars and uttered under his breath… “Silly Zaiex… Always the jokester. I promise to protect that precious smile no matter what. I will always make you happy.”

Zaiex arrived at the convenience store and bought a few pieces of chicken. As he walked out the store, just across the street near a lamppost, he noticed the girl that they saved before was standing there and a guy was in front of her. He silently hid beside a parked car that was near the lamppost. While hiding, he tried focusing on the guy that was talking to the girl. “Is that… It can’t be? Aiden? What’s he doing with her?” He continued on spying on them, but he is still unable to hear their conversation. After a few minutes, with a big surprise, the girl closed in on Aiden and kissed him. Zaiex quickly held his mouth shut, he began to shiver from the sight, he fell down and the baggage he was carrying made a small sound, enough to be heard by Aiden. He took a quick back look on the car, and Zaiex was already gone. “What is it Aiden? Why’d you stop?” Said the girl. “Oh! Uh it’s… nothing…” The continued kissing. As Aiden closed his eyes, a memory of him seeing Zaiex smile cheerfully at him flashed before him and this caused him to flinch and instantly pushed away from the girl “Aiden! What the heck? You’ve been distracted so much.” Aiden was confused as well. He was unsure why he suddenly remembered that. “I’m sorry… I have to go…” Aiden exclaimed nervously. The girl reached out to grab his arm, but Aiden forcibly removed her hands. “I said. I have to go! Leave now! I don’t have time for this!” The girl was shocked from his scary outburst. “What the?! Don’t expect me to leave like that after our kiss. I said I was sorry didn’t I? I know that you didn’t like me having to hang out with your previous friends, so I went to them earlier today at the park. But then they tried to harass me, good thing two guys appeared wearing your school uniform, one was with a black hair with glasses that seemed pretty nerdy and that one buff guy saved me before they even got to bully me.” After hearing her story, he couldn’t help but ask her about the guy. He turned and angrily held the girl’s uniform and pulled her close to him. “What did you say? A guy with glasses? Who was he? Tell me!” “I-I don’t know! I left immediately when they started fighting” The girl started to tremble from fear, struggling to remove Aiden’s hands from his strop grip on her clothes. Aiden’s eyes gets intense and his hands shaking from anger. In his mind, he didn’t doubt for a second that what she was saying is Zaiex. “A-Aiden? You’re scaring me… Please let me go…” Before his sight goes completely black, he quickly removed his grip on the girl, and then she hurriedly ran away. In a panic, she left a frozen and trembling Aiden in the shadows.

After a few moments of deafening silence, Aiden scoffed and smacked the wall with his fist from extreme anger. “Why did I freaking remember him again! What is wrong with me? Get out of my head!” He started to freak out and he held his head trying to force his brain to forget, but to no avail. The memory of Zaiex was kept playing in his mind. He began bursting out in tears, and a loud and hurtful scream spread across the block. The scream was full of agony and hatred. Zaiex was already running away from Aiden, but he can’t hear Aiden’s cry as he himself is crying and his hearing was foggy from the pain he just felt seeing him together with the girl. Under his breath he muttered the words with a shivering and excruciating feeling… “Why are you doing this to me Aiden? Seeing your face is enough to hurt me, but you being with another… It’s… It’s too much for me to bear. You said you’d be by my side no matter what, but this is what you do? I can’t believe I fell for someone as weak and cowardly as you. But you disappeared before I even got to say anything. I hate you… I don’t want to see you anymore.” He continued running towards home, while still carrying a heavy and prickly burden in his back.

The night became cold and barren, the neighborhood is silent, and the sky was dark and clouds blocking the moon and the stars. Zaiex turned to bed, covered in his pillows and covers, all crumpled up, still shuddering from the intense hurt he just experienced. He muffled himself under the pillow to mute his uncontrollable crying. At the same time, Aiden was in the bathroom, all bare and firmly leaning against the wall with his arms in front of him. Letting the flow of hot water run across his body, standing still with his head held down. With all the steam coming out, and the running water, his tears was completely mixing in with it that it is almost unnoticeable. This was a moment for the two that they didn’t anticipate happening when they met again after a year not seeing each other. Both fell asleep from exhaustion, the night went on as if nothing happened. Everything was quiet, darkness taking over and covering the wake of the severe pain that was witnessed. However, unknowingly by each of them, they completely misunderstood each other, and the gap between them just grew larger. A test of time will only tell if they’ll be able to resolve this predicament that both of them have made.
