~
My stepmother always used to tell me to keep my head up high, no matter who I was against.
"Never bow your head to anyone. Not even to your father and especially not to your friends."
You might think that she had some ulterior motive hidden in there, but you're wrong.
Unlike a fairytale stepmother's who would wickedly tricked their step-daughters to eat toads, my stepmother was everything to me.
My biological mother died when I was very young, and my stepmother filled the hole that I was missing in my family.
However, another hole was created at that moment. My Father became estranged to me, sending me money every week and occasionally dining at home with us.
So my stepmother raised me practically on my own, and let's just say that I was somewhat of a strange child.
I was able to keep up with the conversations that my Father and his business partners were having with ease, occasionally putting in some criticism or an opinion from time to time.
When I got praised in public, my Father showed his love by sending me a little extra in my allowance that week.
And that was it. We were practically strangers to each other.
But my happiness with my stepmother didn't last either.
She died in a car accident just two months ago, a tragedy that shocked even me.
It could have happened to anyone. It could have happened to me, it could have happened to a rich businessman or a normal salary man.
But no, it happened to her.
The funeral was mediocre and my Father only made a brief appearance before leaving for his work once again.
She might not have given birth to me... but she was still the closest thing that I had to a biological mother.

Chapter 2 - Lancaster

No one in the high society circles didn't know the name Leah Lancaster. I've spread my influence far and wide, and whether they hear good things about me or bad things about me is all under my control.
Sure, I might not be from one of the more influential families who come from very old money, but I know when to make friends and when to make enemies.
Life has taught me one thing. It can take away what it gives you in the blink of an eye.
Nothing will ever last.
You might think that there is no way to win at life. That's where you are wrong.
It's a little something called insurance, and my insurance happens to be at the expenses of those who I dislike.
It will always work out perfectly in the end. Meanwhile, I'm going to bask in my twilight zone while it lasts.
But I can't be too cocky. There are those who dare challenge my place. And well, let's just say that it never ends well for them.
~
The room erupted while I leaned back on my chair while the poor rich girl huffed.
Debbie Black
Debbie Black
Darn it, I thought that I was going to beat you this time!
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Well, you're welcome to challenge me again.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Perhaps at the blackjack table?
Debbie Black
Debbie Black
And lose even more of my allowance? No way!
Immediately, the crowd went to challenge me again and it got so violent that my best friend had to intervene.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Leah needs to go now.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Perhaps another night?
He's always making sure that I'm home by my own personal curfew, one o'clock.
Ushering me out of the casino before practically pushing me into a taxi, we both sat and sighed.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
You sure did a number on that girl.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Well, it's all fun.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
You should know that I love to have fun, King.
Every Tuesday night, I spend at least a few hours in the casino, either talking to many of my friends in high society or winning a few cents for some of my favourite charities.
Either way, it strengthens the image that I, Leah Lancaster, am a powerful and self-made woman.
And no man or woman can take that away from me... or so I thought.

Chapter 3 - Aftermath

Kingsley Greendale, born on the same day as me, we were known as the non-biological twins of high society for a while.
We've been inseparable since we got introduced to each other when we were six and to this day, we still share the same strong friendship as back then.
However now, Kingsley's responsibilities are more like a mother hen than a friend.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Your earnings tonight?
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Rounding it down to 540,000.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
So, we have 10%, which is 54,000, donated to the orphanage, 23%, which is... um...
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
124,200.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Right. I forgot that I'm best friends with a human calculator.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Don't flatter me, you know it goes to my head.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Anyway, where were we?
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Right, 50% to that new special needs school that just opened up, which is- wait, don't tell me...
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
290,000!
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Close. 270,000.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Urgh, 20,000 off. I was close though.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Yes, you were.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
And the rest, we'll throw them into the hotpot.
The hotpot was a random charity generator which I created the algorithm for back when I was in high school.
Whenever I had money that needed to be donated, I'd just keep on looking through the hotpot until I finally found the charity to donate to.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
And you and me will take our 1% commission.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
5,400, in our pockets.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
...
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
I feel wrong everytime, taking that 1%. I barely do anything!
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
That's not true. You keep the masses from creating a stampede.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Besides, I need you there as moral support!
He sighed and smiled.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
I guess that I am a very supportive friend.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
That you are!
King and I have been through tough times. His parents passed away suddenly from illnesses around the same time period, and it was a devastating time for him.
I was there for him when he needed me the most, and he was there when my stepmother died.
We're like siblings from different families.
As the taxi pulled up to my house, my smile suddenly disappeared.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
What's wrong?
Kingsley peered out of the window and sure enough, he saw what I was not happy about.
Around five Rolls Royce, a limousine, and a porsche, and a BMW were all parked at the front of my house, and it seems like they were waiting for one person to return home; me.
What does that old man need of me now?
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Do you want me to come in with you?
I looked at Kingsley and fell back in my chair, giving out a dramatic sigh.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
No. It's probably nothing.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
I know when you lie, you know.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
I have a tell?
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
Well, most people don't notice it, but I do.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
...
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
I won't come in there if you don't want me to, but at least call me when it's all over.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
I will. Thank you so much!
He smiled innocently and purely, like he always did.
Kingsley Greendale
Kingsley Greendale
It's no problem. I'll call you later on tonight, okay?
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
Yep.
Waving him away, I turned on my fighting face.
The only reason why the elders of the family would all be gathered here today is for an important announcement.
And I'm the one who the announcement is probably about, considering I was never informed of any sort of meeting.
Leah Lancaster
Leah Lancaster
It doesn't matter. Either way, I won't let them push me around.
