After the autumn rain, the air was cool and moist.
Last night, it was Qin Ying’s shift. Today, it was her day off. When she returned in the morning, the two kids had gone to class already. Even more, they ate at lunch. Therefore, she bought streaky pork for tonight and cooked a good dinner for the children.
This day, Zhen Pingjin returned home early as well. He washed his hands and sat at the table, casually asking about his younger son’s studies. He suddenly heard a weak and soft voice, however.
Compared to his younger son, he didn’t like his older son as much. Although he had good grades and was well-behaved, he had a weak personality. Every time he heard him whispering like a mosquito, he had to hold in the urge to hit him.
The atmosphere on the dining table slightly changed. Zhen Pingjin had a cold face and said, “Repeat. I didn’t hear it.”
Qin Ying knitted her eyebrows too.
Zhen Youxiu looked at his brother who was fiddling with his rice with chopsticks. He uneasily looked at them and said, trembling in fear, “I, I want to transfer schools…”
“Someone bullied you again?” Qin Ying asked, “What’s the matter? I’ll go talk to your teacher.”
Zhen Yuanbai hurriedly denied. “No, no one bullied me.”
I…had injured someone and made them lose a lot of blood.
The most important point was that the person was incredibly scary. People gave him the nickname “Unoffendable”. Without a doubt, when “Unoffendable” comes out of the hospital, he would definitely beat him to death. He could already imagine the hell-like days he would experience in the future.
But he never got in trouble as a kid. He didn’t dare to tell them about this at all. Seeing that his parents were about to discuss who was going to the school to ask about the situation tomorrow, he felt goosebumps all over his body.
“Unoffendable” was injured outside of school. Zhen Yuanbai called the ambulance and hid to the side while waiting for him to be carried away by the ambulance. Then he ran home. If his parents decided to go to school and ask about it tomorrow, maybe everyone will find out about this.
When the time comes, everyone would know that he caused “Unoffendable” to be injured. Without him making a move first, his group of friends would’ve beaten Zhen Yuanbai up first.
Zhen Yuanbai’s heart thumped rapidly and he looked back and forth between his parents. When they mentioned going to school, they weren’t willing either. They started to toss the responsibility on each other. Zhen Yuanbai was too weak. Zhen Pingjin and Qin Ying both believed that it was humiliating to help their child settle down a bullying matter. They would rather Zhen Yuanbai bully others and make them cry. They would even pay for the medical expenses for him.
Zhen Yuanbai could tell that he could not transfer schools. He didn’t dare to mention more and hurriedly said, “I’m not transferring. I just…think the teachers aren’t doing a good job at teaching. That’s, that’s all.”
Zhen Yuanbai was at Shengyi High School. He didn’t dare to talk about the others, but at least in this city, whether it be the learning environment or the qualifications of the teachers, it was top-notch in the school.
While the three were strangely silent, he took a few bites of rice and then quickly ran back to his room.
The door closed but Zhen Yuanbai’s heart thumped rapidly and constantly still. He was afraid of causing trouble. Whenever he encountered the bullies, he would hide when he could. He would endure the teasing when possible as well. But he didn’t know what got to him today. When Shi Bufan was on his skateboard and teasingly called him “fool”, he suddenly had an evil idea. While Shi Bufan was sliding down the road, he pushed him off.
He didn’t know what gave him the guts to do this up to today still.
“I know.” Zhen Yuanbai quickly replied. When there was no movement outside, he opened the door and rushed to take a quick shower.
The moment he walked out, he met his brother’s investigating gaze. His heart thumped rapidly again. “What’s the matter?”
“Did you cause trouble?”
Zhen Youxiu and his personality were of two extremes. Although he didn’t cause trouble, he wasn’t afraid of it. Plus, he was steady and calm since he was a child. His father frequently said that Zhen Youxiu was someone who would do great things in the future. Usually, at this time, he would take a look at Zhen Yuanbai, then resentfully sigh.
Zhen Yuanbai heard this and immediately straightened up. He said, “Nonsense. I didn’t.”
Zhen Youxiu was younger than him by three years. He wasn’t as tall as him right now, so he wasn’t scared of him. He reprimanded. “Don’t criticize what an adult is doing when you’re a child. Go back and sleep.”
Zhen Youxiu raised his eyebrows and watched as he returned to his room.
Zhen Yuanbai laid in bed and rolled back and forth. His heart felt tormented. He finally slept for a while but then a sudden scary thought flashed through his mind. He quivered and woke up.
Although no one saw that he was the cause of Shi Bufan’s accident, he knew though! Wouldn’t he call the teacher and complain about him? Then the teacher would call his parents. From this, wouldn’t his parents be called to school tomorrow?
Zhen Yuanbai’s body was covered in cold sweat.
He brought his phone over and looked at the time. It was already midnight. Usually, at this time, there was no way Shi Bufan wasn’t awake yet. Unless he…
Zhen Yuanbai couldn’t sleep even more now. He flipped back and forth, his mind on the accident. The wind blew at the curtain and he could feel Shi Bufan’s ghost coming to find him.
He opened the lamps and panted heavily under the blankets. Then he climbed out of bed and rummaged through his piggy bank.
He wasn’t an extravagant person. He would save whatever remaining money he had left over from his parents’ allowances and buying materials. He counted the bills on his bed and realized he had two thousand.
Zhen Yuanbai decided to visit Shi Bufan at the hospital. If he was still alive…he would go apologize to him and pay the medical expenses for him too. Hopefully, he wouldn’t be beaten to death.
He pulled the curtains open and looked at the pitch-black sky outside. His mind had been on Shi Bufan and there was no sign of sleepiness anymore.
Why didn’t his parents receive a call yet? Could Shi Bufan be unconscious still? He couldn’t have possibly died.
Zhen Yuanbai was guilty, restless, and frightened. He fell back asleep and had constant nightmares. For a while, he dreamed of Shi Bufan saying “give my life back”, and later on he would dream of Shi Bufan punching his face fiercely and gloomily. He had seen Shi Bufan beating someone up before. He was cruel and fierce with his moves. He looked murderous and reckless, like the birth of a demon.
When he saw this scene, he ended up having nightmares for a few nights in a row.
It was because of this that he never dared to offend Shi Bufan.
The sun was gradually rising. Although the alarm hadn’t rung yet, Zhen Yuanbai sat up on his bed. He hadn’t slept much the entire night but he wasn’t tired at all.
He must go to the hospital to verify whether Shi Bufan was alive or not.
The sound of him rinsing woke Qin Ying up. She opened the door and rubbed her eyes. “Smart one? Isn’t today Saturday? Why are you up so early?”
Zhen Yuanbai’s original name was Zhen Congming (Smart one). He had that name in middle school and it was because of this name that people gave him the nickname of “fool”. Zhen Yuanbai had cried several times and tried his best to persuade his parents to change his name. Finally, they did right before his freshman year. But in his new school, there were his middle school friends too. Zhen Yuanbai had good grades and this boosted his popularity. Therefore, the news of his name spread around.
Shi Bufan teased him because of this name too.
Zhen Yuanbai didn’t like this name. He gurgled and spit the water out of his mouth, correcting Qin Ying, “Don’t call me smart one.”
Qin Ying said, “It’s because your name is Cong Ming so you’re smart now.”
Zhen Yuanbai remained silent. He purposefully rinsed the toothbrush in the cup out loud as if he was protesting against her. Qin Ying scratched her hair and corrected herself, “How about Yuanyuan?”
Zhen Yuanbai then unwillingly replied. “I already made plans with my friends to go out and play today.”
“You have friends?”
Zhen Yuanbai knitted his eyebrows and began to wash his face. He softly said, “Of course.”
He pretended to carry his book bag and pushed the electric bicycle out of the house. After coming out of the elevator, he wore his dustproof mask and rushed straight to the hospital.
It was late autumn and it had been chilly in the morning recently. Zhen Yuanbai wore a thin jacket and pulled the zipper up completely. His slightly curly hair was blown behind his back. When he arrived, he parked the electric bicycle at the door and scratched his messy hair. He walked to the reception desk and asked, “Hello, which room is Shi Bufan in? He’s the one who was carried here from the south door of Sheng Yi High School yesterday.”
He had a doll-like face. His hair took after his father, naturally a bit curly. He looked well-behaved and shy. The receptionist at the front desk revealed a warm and friendly smile. After she found out, she even considerately pointed in the direction for him.
Zhen Yuanbai thanked her and followed her direction.
He hadn’t been to the hospital so he didn’t know that there were numerous patients waiting in line, no matter the day or night. It was always packed with people.
Zhen Yuanbai followed the crowd inside and walked to the instructed floor. His heart pounded quickly.
He already confirmed that Shi Bufan was alive. At the same time he was relieved, he felt his entire body aching. While thinking about whether Shi Bufan would push him against the wall and beat him in the hospital, he cowered at the closed door. He stood on his tippy toes to look through the glass window of the door.
He saw Shi Bufan’s…long legs. It should be Shi Bufan. He wore a patient’s clothes and was leaning his legs against the small table on the bed. Zhen Yuanbai believed that other than a school bully like him, no one would dare to prop their legs against the table. What an arrogant person.
But since he’s awake, why didn’t he call the teacher to talk to his parents?
It seemed like only Shi Bufan was in there.
Zhen Yuanbai had an inner battle with his mind and still didn’t dare to open the door. After standing for a while, a tall male doctor walked over and smiled at him. “Hey kid, you’re here to visit your friend?”
Zhen Yuanbai hurriedly stood to the side and nodded hesitantly.
“I already contacted his parents through your school. But they aren’t here yet. Well, you got the news quick.” As the doctor said this, he opened the door and said to the young man laying on the bed and crossing his arms over his chest, looking at the ceiling, “There’s a kid here. He should be your friend. See if you recognize him or not.”
Zhen Yuanbai stood at the door, not daring to walk inside. The doctor waved at him and said, “Here, come in and close the door.”
Zhen Yuanbai shifted step by step slowly and hesitantly, carefully walking into Shi Bufan’s line of sight.
Shi Bufan’s indifferent gaze landed on his face and he subconsciously lifted his hand, greeting him robotically like a “lucky cat”, “Hi…”
“Who are you?”
Zhen Yuanbai was confused.
The doctor sighed. “It seems like he doesn’t recognize anyone.”
Zhen Yuanbai looked bewilderingly at the doctor. He gradually widened his unbelievable eyes after hearing his explanation. He controlled his trembling hands due to excitement behind his backpack. “So, you’re saying…he lost his memory?”
The doctor nodded and asked Shi Bufan a few more questions. Before he left, he said to Shi Bufan, “Today is Saturday so you guys probably don’t have class. Stay with him for a while. I already notified your teacher and they should be coming in a while.”
Zhen Yuanbai couldn’t control the corner of his lips curling up. He nodded firmly and said, “Ok, thank you, doctor.”
There were only two people left in the room quickly. Zhen Yuanbai clutched the strap of his backpack and heard Shi Bufan asking calmly, “Who are you?”
“I…” Zhen Yuanbai’s mind turned quickly and he said, “See, I’m the first one to visit you, so I’m obviously your great friend.”
Shi Bufan looked up and glanced at the hard to cover ecstasy in his eyes. He raised his eyebrows and said, “Oh?”
A good friend would be happy at my memory loss?
Proofreader: Akimi
Who would’ve thought?
Life would always throw unexpected curveballs at you. It would put you down while you were happy and proud, but also give you a surprise while you were desperate and sad.
Towards Zhen Yuanbai, it was clearly the latter.
No wonder his parents hadn’t received his teacher’s call. No wonder Shi Bufan hadn’t complained to the teacher.
He lost his memory!
This was probably the second piece of good news Zhen Yuanbai had heard since started high school. The last one was when his parents agreed to change his name.
Shi Bufan forgot how he fell so he naturally wouldn’t beat him up. Zhen Yuanbai slowly relaxed and calmed down his stiff body. Although he tried his best to suppress his happiness, one could still see the ecstasy in his eyes.
He nodded while looking at Shi Bufan’s questioning gaze. His heart thumped rapidly and he stressed seriously, “It’s true. I’m really your best friend.”
He rubbed his fingers up and down the straps of the backpack on the two sides of his chest. He felt uneasy for lying to him, but also sympathetic and guilty towards Shi Bufan. In the end, it was his fault that Shi Bufan became like this. Even though he didn’t dare to admit his fault, he should do something for him no matter what.
He thought about it and slightly softened his tone. “What do you want to eat? I’ll buy it for you.”
Shi Bufan looked at him for a while and slowly said, “Since you’re my best friend, you should know what I like to eat.”
Zhen Yuanbai’s heart thumped and Shi Bufan’s gaze made him feel as if he had seen through him. He subconsciously chuckled. Who knows what you like to eat? However, he directly said, “Then I’ll buy what you usually eat.”
Shi Bufan didn’t answer and Zhen Yuanbai pretended to stay calm. As soon as he walked out the door, he held his hand over his miserable heart.
Hopefully, Shi Bufan would maintain his memory loss until the college entrance exam was over. That way, even if he knew that he had injured and lied to him, he wouldn’t be able to find him.
Harboring this beautiful expectation, he happily got out of the elevator and went to a nearby cafe.
It was near the hospital so there were stores that sold almost everything. Zhen Yuanbai bought himself a glass of soy milk along with an egg pancake. He racked his brains, unable to think of what Shi Bufan would usually like to eat.
This was normal. After all, he had never eaten with Shi Bufan before. Normally, he hadn’t seen him eat breakfast in the classroom either. Though, it was common to see him sleeping.
Zhen Yuanbai satisfied his stomach and pondered. In the end, he decided to buy one of each: soy milk, deep-fried breadstick, egg , rice congee made with red beans, lotus seeds, longan, red dates, nuts, and noodles made of the three fresh ingredients. Then, he brought all the food back to Shi Bufan’s room.
The doctor said that the teacher wasn’t here yet and Zhen Yuanbai silently let out a sigh of relief. He was really scared of the teacher questioning why he was here. After all, it wasn’t like he had a good relationship with him. He didn’t even know him.
He placed the food on the table and Shi Bufan finally broke away from his arrogant-idler posture. He slowly sat up straight and looked at the “sumptuous” breakfast in the plastic bag. He looked at him questioningly, “I normally like to eat all of this?”
The gauze was wrapped around Shi Bufan’s head. He looked slightly to the side, his confused look made him appear to be a harmless large dog. “Is that so?”
“Of course.” Scared that he might ask him something else, Zhen Yuanbai reached over and inserted the straw in the soy milk glass. He delivered it to his mouth and made him shut up. However, he said concernedly, “Quickly eat. Don’t starve yourself.”
The straw was shoved in Shi Bufan’s mouth and he took a sip. He immediately knitted his eyebrows and Zhen Yuanbai had no choice but to take the glass back. “You, you don’t like to drink this?”
Shi Bufan retorted, “I liked to drink this in the past?”
How would I know? I’m not your real best friend. I’m the “fool” !
Zhen Yuanbai said very slowly, “You loved drinking that in the past and would be able to drink five glasses in one go.”
Shi Bufan was speechless.
He asked Zhen Yuanbai, “You think I’m stupid?”
Zhen Yuanbai looked seriously at him and subconsciously chuckled. Before he could say anything, Shi Bufan said, “Scram.”
Zhen Yuanbai didn’t dare not to follow his directions. He grabbed his backpack and slung it over his shoulders. He just walked to the door when he saw a familiar person opening the door and walking in.
Ji Yanping was the teacher in charge of their class. All teachers would have a pair of discerning eyes. They could casually glance at someone and be able to see through a lot of things.
But right now, Ji Yanping’s discerning eyes were ineffective.
She couldn’t understand how these two students, of two different extremes, ended up together. Shi Bufan had a horrible attitude and no one dared to offend him, meanwhile, Zhen Yuanbai was an excellent student but a coward. He should be avoiding Shi Bufan at all costs.
Zhen Yuanbai reacted first and said, “Hello, teacher.”
Ji Yanping looked at Shi Bufan who was scratching his neck and then she asked Zhen Yuanbai, “Why are you here?”
Zhen Yuanbai explained, “He was injured yesterday and I was the one who called an ambulance for him. I came this morning to check on his injuries…”
Shi Bufan stopped scratching his neck. Meanwhile, Jin Yanping looked at Zhen Yuanbai gently. She nodded in praise. She thought that this kid was a model for Sheng Yi High School’s top students. Not only were his grades good, but he also had a noble moral character too. Towards a demon-like Shi Bufan, not all students could disregard their former hatred and help him out.
“Then are you going back now? How did you come over?”
“I rode my electric bicycle over.” Zhen Yuanbai hurriedly said and whispered in his teacher’s ears, “He lost his memory. I was scared that he might be uncomfortable seeing me the first time, so I told him that I was his good friend.”
He was scared that the teacher might spill everything in front of Shi Bufan. He didn’t dare to say much either. However, Ji Yanping understood him and looked at him in respect and praise.
Zhen Yuanbai was really a top student with great moral character. Not only did he take pleasure in helping others, but he also made a sacrifice to benefit others. He actually planned on being friends with Shi Bufan. Speaking of this, now that he lost his memory, it was a great chance to lead him on the right path.
She nodded and patted Zhen Yuanbai’s shoulder. She gently said, “Good boy. This teacher didn’t misjudge you.”
Being the “Unoffendable” in Sheng Yi High School, nobody dared to offend him, not the petty and low students, or the miserable teachers, but even also the undignified school principal.
As long as he wasn’t overboard, everyone would turn a blind eye to him. Now that he lost his memory, if he could use this chance to learn and listen in class, the whole school and even Shi Bufan’s ancestors would be gratified with Zhen Yuanbai.
After all, Shi Bufan wasn’t just a normal student who was hard to discipline.
Zhen Yuanbai completely didn’t know that he was given such a heavy responsibility. He thought that Ji Yanping was saying he had a kind heart. His face flushed red and he guiltily looked down. “Then I’ll go back now. Goodbye, teacher.”
“Ok, be careful on your way home.”
After watching the kid leave, Ji Yanping turned around to face Shi Bufan. She was suddenly shocked. “What’s the matter with you?”
Shi Bufan’s neck and face turned red. He scrunched his eyebrows tightly while she hurried to find a doctor. After checking over him, they received an answer. “You’re allergic to soybean. Did you forget this too?”
Shi Bufan looked coldly at the needle in the back of his hand with an unknown expression.
Ji Yanping sat in front of him and subconsciously wanted to put in a good word for her student. “Yuanbai didn’t know either…how do you feel now?”
Shi Bufan remained silent.
Despite the emptiness in his mind, his personality was still the same. He needed a whack on the head.
Zhen Yuanbai sneezed as the cold wind blew in his direction. When he returned home his hand was already cold and he rubbed the tip of the nose. Then, he parked the electric bicycle in the living room. At this time, his parents were already at work. He ran over to knock on Zhen Youxiu’s door. “Here’s your breakfast.”
Zhen Youxiu examined him and said, “You already handled matters?”
Zhen Yuanbai found his brother annoying. He rubbed his nose again and unhappily, “Even food can’t shut your mouth.”
Shi Bufan was ok but his head was damaged. Zhen Yuanbai was very moved. Heavens had been in favor of him. He believed that he couldn’t avoid his responsibility no matter what. While Shi Bufan lost his memory, he should take care of him. As well as the medical expenses…he needed to think of a solution too.
Because Zhen Yuanbai was in a great mood, he completed two practice tests in a row. Around eleven, he used the leftover rice to cook egg fried rice along with sliced sausages and scallions.
He was pretty good at cooking but this was also one of the reasons why his father didn’t like him. Zhen Pingjin believed that men should be outside sparring and playing football, not staying inside the house.
Who cares. Zhen Yuanbai enjoyed the silence.
While he was eating, his phone suddenly rang. He looked over to see an unfamiliar number and placed the phone next to his ear, puzzled. He then heard a voice that made him tremble. “Best friend?”
“Ah…yes, it’s me.” Zhen Yuanbai picked up the bowl with one hand and ducked from his brother’s line of sight. He walked to the kitchen and shoved rice in his mouth at the same time. “What’s the matter? You need me?”
“Come over.”
You take me as your slave who would be there immediately and be at your beck and call?
After he hung up, Zhen Yuanbai quickly finished his food and handed his bowl to his brother to wash. Then he got on his electric bicycle and rode to the hospital again.
Before he walked inside, he saw Shi Bufan standing at the hospital door. He glared at him, his head wrapped in gauze and his hair was messy. His whole body gave off an impatient aura.
He looked up to see Zhen Yuanbai gulping. To speak the truth, he didn’t want to be responsible for Shi Bufan anymore. This guy was too scary.
Shi Bufan walked over and Zhen Yuanbai saw the blood on the back of his hand. It had already soaked through the white gauze, dripping onto the palm of his hand. He could tell from a glance that this was due to him pulling the needle out of his hand and not pressing on it. He hurriedly grabbed two napkins from the front basket of the electric bicycle and said, “Quickly press onto it and wipe it too.”
Shi Bufan lifted his hand over and he knitted his eyebrows as if crushing a fly in between. “Press it for me.”
Zhen Yuanbai stared at him and reached over to press the pinhole. Shi Bufan squinted at him and Zhen Yuanbai was scared witless. His eyelashes trembled and he wiped his hand with the napkins. He whispered, “Is there a matter?”
“Aren’t you my best friend? If I don’t find you, who else could I go to?”
Zhen Yuanbai let go of his hand and looked guiltily. He noticed some red dots on his neck and face and he was confused. He was about to say something when Shi Bufan walked behind him and said, “Let’s go.”
Zhen Yuanbai hurriedly held onto the handlebar. “Go, go where?”
“Your house.”
“My house…isn’t too convenient.”
He didn’t know whether it was due to pain or because he was annoyed, but Shi Bufan’s voice was hoarse. “Why would it be inconvenient for my best friend?”
“My brother is home doing homework.”
“A-Fan?” A woman suddenly ran out of the hospital door. She shockingly said, “Where are you going?”
Before Zhen Yuanbai could react, his waist was suddenly patted. Shi Bufan placed his lips near his ears and threatened, “If you don’t go now, I’ll beat you up until you cry.”
Zhen Yuan immediately acted like a horse that was slapped on its butt. He took off with Shi Bufan behind him on the bicycle, swaying from left to right at the weight.
He was a bit frightened in his heart. Shi Bufan loved saying “scram”, “I will make you cry”, “this boss” etc. He had lost his memory but he still remembered his catchphrases?
But no matter what, Zhen Yuanbai didn’t dare to bring him back to his house. Because the electric bicycle was too slow, it started to wobble back and forth on the road. Zhen Yuanbai felt a heavy weight on his shoulders. Shi Bufan leaned his chin on his shoulders and breathed in his ears. His back suddenly stiffened. “How about…I book a room for you in a hotel…so you can sleep there tonight?”
Shi Bufan suddenly chuckled. Zhen Yuanbai felt the hair on his body stand up and he almost lost balance of the bicycle. Shi Bufan lazily said, “Sure.”
Zhen Yuanbai was about to sigh when he realized that he had forgotten his ID. He asked Shi Bufan, “Did you bring your ID?”
Shi Bufan said slowly, “Nope.”
Zhen Yuanbai went over the possibilities in his mind and really couldn’t find a place to take him to. He dejectedly brought him back to his house. On the way, he intentionally went the long way around, a bit worried that Shi Bufan might keep track of the way to his house and then come over to find him if he remembered everything one day.
When they arrived at the neighborhood, he placed one foot on the ground to balance the bicycle. He softly shrugged his shoulders and Shi Bufan who was laying on him, scrunched his eyebrows and opened his eyes. “We’re here?”
“Mhm…” Zhen Yuanbai said, “Get off. I’m going to bring the electric bicycle into the elevator.”
Shi Bufan got off the bicycle and he looked to the side. Zhen Yuanbai was afraid that he might figure out where his neighborhood was, so he hurriedly tugged on him. “Come this way. We’re going in.”
Shi Bufan was tall and built. When he crossed his arms over his chest, it made Zhen Yuanbai feel pressured in the elevator. He held the electric bicycle and secretly glanced at him. He noticed that there seemed to be allergy symptoms on his face and neck. He became more and more curious.
But since Shi Bufan hadn’t said anything, he didn’t dare ask either. Under the silence, the two arrived at their designated floor. Zhen Yuanbai immediately pushed the electric bicycle out while he covered the house number. At the same time, he unlocked the door and scurried to the side, gesturing for him to enter.
Shi Bufan saw his little movements and lazily tugged the corner of his lip. He walked in casually.
Zhen Youxiu’s middle school and Zhen Yuanbai’s high school were not far from each other. If he was out of class early, he would go ahead and wait for Zhen Yuanbai sometimes. Although he never talked to Shi Bufan before, he had seen him before. He heard some movements so he walked out the room. They made eye contact. Zhen Youxiu scrunched his eyebrows and before he could say something, he saw Zhen Yuanbai rushing over after parking the electric bicycle. He pushed him into the room and said, “I brought my friend over to play. Stay in your room to do homework.”
“I finished my homework.”
“Then play your games.” The two kids of the Zhen Family had great grades. Zhen Pingjin was a part of a gaming company, so he rarely restricted the kids to go online or play games.
Zhen Youxiu tilted his head to the side and looked behind him. Zhen Yuanbai pushed his head back. “Don’t come out.”
Not only was he scared of being beaten up, he was also a bit worried that Shi Bufan might recognize Zhen Youxiu and find someone to beat him up.
He walked out and closed the door for Zhen Youxiu. Who knew that during this time Shi Bufan was strolling around the house as if it was his. He was already laying down on his bed, clearly not taking himself to be a stranger.
“Why are you so scared?” Shi Bufan took out his allergy pills from his pocket and raised his eyebrows. “Was this how we got along with each other in the past?”
“Of course not.” Zhen Yuanbai said, “You were really nice to me in the past.”
“Then what are you scared of?”
“Don’t you have a problem with your brain right now?”
He was a scaredy cat but wasn’t afraid to express his opinions. Shi Bufan shoved the pill in his mouth and gulped it down with water. He lazily glanced at Zhen Yuanbai who pursed his lips. He believed that he should do something. He reached over to pick up the glass but Shi Bufan was quicker. “Why are you so nervous? I’m not done drinking it yet.”
Zhen Yuanbai moved back a step and then another one. His back leaned against the desk. His fingers dug against the drawer.
Shi Bufan finished drinking the water in the glass and said carelessly, “Go and pour me another glass.”
Zhen Yuanbai took the glass from him and poured another glass. When he returned, his phone rang. Ji Yanping had called, asking if Shi Bufan had left with him. He said, “He’s at my house.”
Ji Yanping sighed and said, “As long as he didn’t run off. His parents had been looking for him. How about this? I’ll give you his parents’ phone numbers. When he wants to leave, give them a call so they can come and pick him up, ok?”
It didn’t seem like a great option.
Zhen Yuanbai looked at Shi Bufan who was drinking water hesitatingly. Finally, he said, “Ok.”
After he hung up, Shi Bufan suddenly motioned him to come over. Zhen Yuanbai placed his guards up and subconsciously looked around.
Shi Bufan asked, “Don’t you see the devil on your shoulder?”
“…” Zhen Yuanbai felt goosebumps all over his body from his words. His instant pale face made Shi Bufan burst into laughter. His curled his lips and said, “I’m just joking. Come over and give me my phone.”
Zhen Yuanbai was still shaking. He was a bit angry and asked, “Why?”
Shi Bufan’s smile was still there but it was evident that he was impatient. “Just do as I asked of you, otherwise I’ll beat you up.”
Zhen Yuanbai walked over and gave him his phone. Shi Bufan took it and found his phone number. When his gaze landed on the empty contact, he looked meaningfully at Zhen Yuanbai. “We’re best friends but somehow I didn’t even list you as a contact. Isn’t that strange?”
Zhen Yuanbai snatched his phone back and rambled some nonsense, “Good friends don’t need to rely on their phones. They can just remember each other’s phone numbers off the top of their minds. That’s how you know we placed each other in our hearts…Look, what are you looking at? You told me this.”
Since Shi Bufan lost his memory, he decided to place the blame on him.
Shi Bufan touched his chin and turned off both of their screens. “Fine, tell me what my phone number is.”
“…” Zhen Yuanbai was silent for two seconds before he glared at him. “Are you doubting me? You think that I’m not your best friend?”
“…” His expression was quite convincing. Shi Bufan was dazed for a few seconds by his glare. He originally had doubted him but his suspicion had faded a bit now. “You’re really my best friend?”
Zhen Yuanbai suddenly raised his fist and softly punched Shi Bufan’s chest under his gaze. “Do you recall this action?”
Shi Bufan’s eyelashes flickered. He tried his best to recall this memory and he subconsciously made a fist with his hands. He also punched his chest. Although there wasn’t much memory of this, it felt like his body knew this action. Therefore, he hesitatingly nodded.
Zhen Yuanbai felt more confident now. He took his phone and turned the screen on, scanning through the list of phone numbers. “See, who else besides me had visited you in the hospital before? If I’m not your best friend, who is?”
Shi Bufan licked his lips. He was already a bit doubtful because of his memory loss and now that Zhen Yuanbai had said this, he was scared this was a trick. When he persisted, however, he believed he had over thought it. Zhen Yuanbai continued, “What benefits would I get from pretending to be your best friend? Since the morning, I have been taking care of you. Why would I find work for myself and babysit a stranger?”
He noticed that his attitude determined Shi Bufan’s attitude towards him. Hearing his explanation, Shi Bufan felt a bit guilty. He touched his chin and said, “How come you don’t know I’m allergic to soybean then?”
Zhen Yuanbai was speechless.
His mind went blank for a second before placing the blame on Shi Bufan again. “You are normally an arrogant and fearless person. Who knew that you had an allergy to soybean? We’re best friends but you won’t even tell me you are allergic to soybean. You don’t view me as your true friend, do you?”
“…” Shi Bufan knitted his eyebrows again. There was something wrong with this but he couldn’t explain it.
Zhen Yuanbai acted calm on the surface but his heart was beating rapidly. He rubbed his fingers against his pants and suddenly snatched Shi Bufan’s phone. He quickly entered his phone number and said, “I added my phone number now. Just what exactly were you thinking? You insisted on memorizing my phone number, claiming that’s the way to show our friendship. You also have a lot of weird habits. Only I can stand you and not abandon you after such a long time.”
“We have known each other for a long time?”
Zhen Yuanbai glanced at him and returned his phone. He was becoming slicker with his lies. “Of course we’ve known each other for a very long time. Ever since we were in freshman year, we’ve known each other.”
This was the truth.
Shi Bufan took his phone and tapped on an icon. “How come you’re not on my social media either?”
Zhen Yuanbai looked around and came up with an idea. “Because you deleted me.”
“?”
“Why do you think you lost your memory?” Zhen Yuanbai attempted to form an explanation. “It’s because you fought with me and then you left with your skateboard. It might be because you were too angry so you were going full speed on the skateboard, so you accidentally fell and bumped your head.”
“…” Shi Bufan gradually believed his words. “Why did we fight?”
“Because, because you didn’t know how to do a question. When you asked me, I was teaching someone else. And then you got angry.” Zhen Yuanbai raised his chin, almost believing his own made-up story. After he finished, he purposefully shamed him. “Stingy.”
Shi Bufan was confused.
He glanced at Zhen Yuanbai and felt a headache rising again. “Really?”
“Look at you. You don’t believe me again.” Zhen Yuanbai said, “What would I get from lying to you?”
“…” Shi Bufan squinted his eyes and asked his last question. “How come you didn’t want me to come to your house originally?”
“Because you said I have a tiny house so I was upset with you.”
He reacted quickly and it seemed like the truth. The most important thing was that Shi Bufan believed it was something he would really say.
He finally believed Zhen Yuanbai and laid on the bed. He said, “I’m going to nap for a while. Go buy lunch for me.”
Zhen Yuanbai took out his phone and prepared to order takeout for him. But he didn’t forget to remind him, “I’m your best friend and not your babysitter.”
“Oh.” Shi Bufan rolled over and tugged his blanket along, closing his eyes.
Zhen Yuanbai had become more and more brave with each of his lies. He walked over and pushed Shi Bufan. “What do you want to eat?”
Shi Bufan was irritated. “Anything.”
“There’s no anything. But there’s poop.”
Shi Bufan suddenly turned around and looked at him.
Zhen Yuanbai jumped and trembled. He moved his phone away from him and said weakly, “Then I’ll order spicy hotpot and a bowl of rice. Is that enough?”
