So let's begin:
I'm sitting on the stage feeling incredibly awkward.
Alina
(It's scary having the whole orphanage looking at me!)
The Director of the school, Ms. warrington, is giving a speech now.
Ms. Warrington
Alina came to us ten years ago as a scared, lost little girl.
Ms. Warrington
She couldn't remember anything that happened before that.
Ms. Warrington
We only knew her name because of the note pinned to her t-shirt.
Once again, I wonder how that's even possible.
How does an eight-year-old not even know her name or where she lives?
Ms. Warrington
she's grown into a strong, brave, responsible young woman, and all of us here at St. Bernadette's are very, very proud of her.
Ms. Warrington
We wish her the best of luck as she goes out into the world. We'll miss you, Alina.
The audience applauded and I'm sure my face is burning red.
Alina
(But at least it's finally over!)
I climb down off the stage.
People rush up to me to congratulate me for graduating from St Bernadette's.
I try and ignore the absence of any of my own family, including my parents... If i ever even had any.

(Ah.. i don't wanna think about it..)
My two best friends, Velda and Noreen, grab me and drag me away from the crowd of people heading to the reception.
Velda
Thank God that's over. Talk about boring!
Noreen
I thought it was lovely. Ms. warrington really loves you, Alina.
Velda
Don't be stupid, Noreen. she talks like that about all of the graduates.
Alina
How are you two going to manage without me?
Alina
You'll be fighting as soon as I'm out the gate.
Noreen
Don't worry, Alina. Velda thinks I can't fight, But I'll show her.
Velda
Yeah Right! saint Noreen Fighting? I doubt it.
Alina
(Ah.. these girls!!l

Stop it, you two. You're giving me a headache.
Velda
Off to the big metropolis of Langton tomorrow. Are you crazy excited?

Get ready, because in two months I'll be joining you!

I can't believe our dream is finally coming true!
Noreen
I wish you two would be more level-headed about this. Langton is full of dangers.
Velda
How did you end up such a scaredy-cat, Noreen?

Velda, why can't you accept that we're all different? Noreen is Noreen and you're you.
Velda
Exactly! Noreen's boring and I'm awesome!

Just then, I notice Edward standing alone in the shade of a big elm tree.

( Aww, he looks so sad.)
Velda notices me looking in his direction.

What's Carlisle's son moping about? Too much money? Doesn't know how to spend it?

Why do you hate Edward so much?
Velda
I don't hate him, I just can't bring myself to care about a spoiled rich boy.
Alina
He's more then just a spoiled rich boy.
Alina
He's always been kind to me. He's never looked down on me, either.
Velda
Maybe not you, but you're the only one.
Alina
( Why is Velda always so mean?)
I've never seen Edward bullying others, despite the fact that his father funds the orphanage.
Velda
Are you saying you have feelings for Edward?
Alina
Well... I guess You could say that.
Velda
Wait, really?! You're that into him?!
Alina
Well, I don't think "into him" is quite the right way of putting it...

( He brought life to My colorless world.)
Alina
( I don't like all of this noise, all of these children.)
I look out over the rolling fields behind the orphanage and up to the big mansion on the hill.
Alina
(I wonder who lives up there.)
Maybe that's supposed to be any home
Alina
(Why can't i remember anything?)
It's as if someone wiped away all of my memories.
It's like I never Existed before two days ago when I came to this awful place.
I didn't know anyone else was out here.

( Why can't these horrible children just leave me alone?)
He's not wearing the uniform, so maybe he's not from the orphanage.

Can you not talk?

I CAN talk. I just don't want to.

(who is this silly boy?)
Edward
So how did you become an orphan?
Alina
I don't know. I lost my memory.
Edward
But a bit exciting, too. You might be a princess of a far-off land and you don't even know it!
He's the first one to mention how scary my situation is.
Alina
( It's like he can feel what I'm feeling)
And now he's shown me a brighter way of thinking about it.
I smile at him and he smiles back.
Edward
I hope that you are! If you are, can I be you knight?
I'm surprised to hear myself say that
We sit quietly for a bit.
Alina
Are you a special orphan? Is that why you don't have to wear a uniform?
Edward
No, I'm not an orphan
He points to the house on the hill, the mansion
Edward
I live up there with my mother and father.
Alina
(If he lives up in that beautiful mansion, why does he seem so sad?)
Edward
I don't have any friends. Would you like to be my friend?
Alina
( I mean it, too. I want to be this funny boy's friend. )
Edward
But wait, you can't be my friend if i don't know your name. Or do you want me to call you "little girl"?
Alina
No! Like I said, I'm not a little girl.
Edward
Nice to meet you, Alina.
We smile at each other and then go back to swinging our feet in unison.
Velda
Alina...? Earth to Alina?
Velda
Thinking about Edward, huh? You've got it bad.
Alina
Hey, it's not like that! He's like an older brother to me!
Velda
Anyway, come on. Let's go eat before it's all gone.
Alina
You guys go, I'll be there soon.
Alina
( shh... that's a relief...)
Once Velda and Noreen leave, I walk up to Edward.
Edward smiles but says nothing
Alina
(he's looking sad...)
Edward
I've known all along that this day was coming, but it feels quite different now that we're here.
Edward
I mean... you're leaving. I guess I never thought that you would.
Alina
But you helped me find the apartment in Langton!
Edward
I know. It doesn't make any sense.
Edward
(can't you understand?)
Alina
If it helps, I'm kind of nervous about the future, too.
Edward
That does help, actually.
Alina
Lang is only an hour away by train. You can visit me all the time
Edward
But that's not the same as seeing you every day or knowing you're only a short walk away.
Alina
I know. I'm going to miss you too, Edward.
Alina
But you know we'll always love each other, no matter what. You're my big brother.
Edward
I'm just being stupid, Sorry. I don't mean to ruin your day.

Okay. I gotta go before Velda sends a search party.
I turn my back to him and start walking.

(Ahh!! no it's can't be..)
He looks at me with a troubled expression on his face.

I can't do this. I don't want you to leave, Alina.

Edward... I have to.
Alina
I can't stay at St. Bernadette's anymore. Besides, I WANT to go. you know that.

But what if you had other options?

(Like stay with me... Forever..)

What are you talking about, Edward?
Alina
It's not like you to speak in riddles.
Alina
What do you want to say? Just say it and Stop being silly.
Alina
(what's the Matter with him today!)
Edward
I... I want us to get married.
Then I look at his face and see that he's serious

You know we love each other.
Alina
Sure, but not like that. I love you like a brother.
After hearing my answer, Edward casts his eyes down in disappointment.
Just as I'm about to reach for his hand, he raises his eyes to meet mine again.
I can tell the smile he's giving me is forced

Haha. You're right. I'm sorry. That kinda came out of nowhere, right?

I'll always be here for you, Alina.
He pats me on the head and leaves.

( I didn't think Edward had feelings for me in that way...)
Edward Drove me, Noreen, and Velda to the train Station.
The station master announces that my train is boarding
I stand up and hug Edward.
Alina
See you soon, Edward.
Alina
(I hope i made a right decision..)

Noreen, please keep an eye on Velda. You know how she can be.
Noreen
I'll try my best, But you know as well as i do that she's as stubborn as a mule.
Velda pushes Noreen out of the way and hugs me tightly.
Velda
Get ready. I'll be there before you know it. I love you, darling.
Alina
I love you too. All of you.
I get my bag and climb on the train.
Alina
(I'm leaving. I'm finally leaving St. Bernadette's!)
I watch them waving on the platform as my train pulls away.
Alina
I'll miss you guys..
I wave back with a smile, just barely managing to keep my tears at bay.
After finding my seat, I stow my bag in the overhead compartment.
I sit down and watch the landscape fly by out if the window.
Soon, I start to dream about my new apartment.
How will I deal with having so much space all to myself?
I'll get to cook and eat whatever what i want!

( The freedom of it all is intoxicating!)
Maybe Noreen is right. Maybe i should be more cautious, think things through more carefully.
Alina
( I want to jump in with both feet! )
I think about where I've been and where I'm going. Both are still a mystery.
Alina
( I'm an eighteen-year-old girl who really knows nothing about herself.)
The only thing I know for sure was that those three people standing on the platform were my best friends in the world...and now I've left them.

(But is that all there really is to me...?)

( Who was I before I lost my memory?)

( There's gotta be some sort of hint hidden in my memories...)
I wake up and look around
I try to get my thoughts together
Ms. Warrington
Hello. So you've decided to wake up then?
Alina
Am i sick? is this a hospital?
Ms. Warrington
This is the infirmary at St. Bernadette's Home for Orphans. You must be Alina, right?
Alina
A home of Orphans? Am i an orphan?
I search my mind, but it's like looking at a blank page.
Alina
( Why can't i remember anything?)
The woman hands me a small piece of paper
Ms. Warrington
This was pinned to your shirt. we found you sleeping in blanket on the porch.
"Her name is Alina. she's eight year old. she has no family. Please take care of her."
I Turn it over and check the back
Ms. Warrington
We hoped you'd be able to tell us more when you woke up.
Alina
I don't know why, but I can't remember anything
Finally, i think of something
Alina
Was there a man? A tall man?
Ms. Warrington
Maybe that was your father?
Alina
I don't know. Maybe? I'm not sure.
Alina
( Why am i here all alone? )

( That man... if only i could figure out who that man was...)
