(I hope I did the introduction right)
The heat of high summer is the last day anyone wants to be working in an office without functioning air conditioning.
I was greatful whenever they fixed it this spring but what was the point if it became broke again?
I glanced towards my assistant Sally, who was currently fanning herself with a paper fan created with one of our official statements.
It's been a month since I've worked for this declining company and I've just had enough of it.
The pay is terrible, they don't even have a cafeteria, and to top it all off, the Boss is a pervert.
Sally Moore
Urgh, geez. Why are there always so many reports?
The last time I had seen her finish a report was a month ago. All she does during the day is paint her nails and watch crappy romance dramas while I'm stuck with all of the work.
Sally Moore
How many minutes until we get off of the clock?
Grace Rivers
187 minutes and 54 seconds.
I said it without even thinking about it.
Ever since I came in this morning, I've been counting down the time until I get to leave.
You'd think that being a human calculator would make you eligible to work at a huge company, especially with an accounting degree under your belt.
However, since I graduated early and I'm only 19, the elder generation look down on me like those qualifications are useless.
All they see is a pretty face to be their poster girl.
And then, at that moment, something occurred that would change my life forever.
Derek Smith
Excuse me? Is a Grace Rivers here?
All six of us turned our heads towards the unknown man who had just appeared from the stairwell.
His suit was groomed, making him look sharp and important.
Getting up from my seat, I walked over towards him, confused as to what was happening.
As you can probably guess, we don't get many visitors here.
Derek Smith
I'm sorry, but do you mind if I ask you a few questions?
Grace Rivers
Um, sure. I'm not sure if I can help you though.
Derek Smith
They are pretty simple questions.
Derek Smith
So, what is 3402 times 719?
Why is he asking me times tables?
Derek Smith
Um, here's another problem.
Derek Smith
If a ball was rolling down a smooth hill which was 4 metres long, accelerating at 7 m/s squared, why angle would the incline of the hill be?
Grace Rivers
Excuse me, why are you asking me math questions?
Grace Rivers
I've graduated from university already and I'm not a high school student.
Derek Smith
No, I understand that. My apologies. It's just... I never thought that the rumours would be true.
There are rumours about me?
He then extended out a card to me and smiled politely.
Derek Smith
I'm Derek Smith, personal assistant to the CEO of the Castella Corporation.
Derek Smith
We'd like to hire you as our new accountant, if that's okay.
Hold on... the Castella Corporation?
They only hire the elite of the elite.
Not to mention that he has a think tank comprised of the best minds of this generation!
And he wants me of all people to be his accountant?
And that's how a new path was created for me. One that made my life change forever.

Chapter 2 - Little Brother
I walked home that night, the card that the assistant had given me weighing in my hand as I read it over and over again.
Castella Corporation
CEO Liam Castella
Num.: XXX XXX XX XX
Working Hours: Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM
Is this some sort of prank? Accountant for one of the biggest company/corporation out there?
And here I thought they'd prefer to hire a man for accounting.
After all, it's common knowledge that there are hardly any women who work for the Castella Corporation. It's 90% men.
And how did they even hear about me? I wasn't an attraction in university. Everyone just saw me as the bratty kid who got away with not studying for her finals.
The truth is, I'm a certified genius with a 169 IQ.
Being a human calculator with photographic memory, me and accounts get on like a house on fire.
Why is a genius working for a declining company? Good question. If I knew the answer to that, I'd truly feel like a genius.
But this... this is a second chance.
A chance to build a future, make something of myself.
A chance for my brothers too.
Walking into my crusty apartment, I heard the sound of a bowl shattering against the floor.
I rushed towards the kitchen, only to find my younger twin brother on the ground, picking up shards of glass from the bowl of popcorn he had gotten himself.
Landon Rivers
Grace, you're home!
Grace Rivers
Hey, don't pick up the shards with your bare hands!
Grace Rivers
Do you want to take a trip to the hospital tonight?
I set down the Castella Corporation's card onto the countertop and helped my younger brother clean up his mess.
Landon Rivers
I'm sorry... I'm just a bother to you, aren't I?
Ever since I graduated early from university, I've been working extremely hard to support Landon and me.
No matter what terribly, crappy place my work is, it pays enough to get him through his redo classes at school.
He was forced to repeat a year after a certain... incident occurred.
One of which resulted in two boys stuck in hospital and a hefty bill which almost swallowed up half of the money that Mother and Father had left us before they ran away.
Grace Rivers
You're not a bother. You're my brother and my identical twin.
Grace Rivers
Besides, everyone makes mistakes.
Grace Rivers
As long as you try and be more careful next time.
I continued to pick up the shards of glass from the bowl while his eyes wandered towards the card that was sitting on the counter top.
Landon Rivers
Castella Corporation.
Landon Rivers
Don't they branch out in different sectors of business?
I turned towards him, impressed.
Grace Rivers
Where did you learn that?
Landon Rivers
Modern Business.
Landon Rivers
I'm trying to take as many courses possible.
And ever since that incident, I've never been called in once and his grades have suddenly spiked.
Landon Rivers
But why do you have a personal card from the Castella Corporation?
Grace Rivers
How did you know it was personal?
He flicked the card with his fingers.
Landon Rivers
The paper is good quality, as well as the golden border around the black card.
Landon Rivers
It reeks privilege.
Grace Rivers
I got offered a job.
Landon Rivers
A job? What sort of job?
Grace Rivers
As their new accountant.
I couldn't help but grin.
Grace Rivers
Little Brother, our fortune might turn around just yet.

Chapter 3 - First Day
And so, that very night, Landon sat beside me while I called Derek Smith and told him of my decision to accept his offer.
He seemed thrilled over the phone, giving me the details about working hours, my salary, and so forth.
Landon's mouth and mine almost dropped to the floor when he announced that I was going to earn a yearly six-figure sum.
Right off of the bat? It sounded too good to be true.
Grace Rivers
If I can ask... what happened to the previous accountant?
Derek Smith
He was caught trying to embezzle some funds to hide from his wife that he was cheating on her.
Derek Smith
He got arrested and fired on the spot.
Derek Smith
I trust that won't happen with you, Miss Rivers.
Grace Rivers
I don't have a wife, so I doubt that would ever occur to me.
Derek Smith
Indeed. Anyway, can you start tomorrow? If you could arrive at 9 AM and just head towards the main reception area, I'll have your badge and working area prepped by then.
Grace Rivers
Um, of course...
Grace Rivers
But can I ask you something...
Derek Smith
I am here to assist you, Miss Rivers.
Grace Rivers
The reason that you're hiring me... I'm afraid that it's just because I'm good at math.
Derek Smith
That isn't the only reason. All will come clear with time.
That sounds a little suspicious. Too suspicious for my liking.
But if this is true, I'll be able to support Landon throughout high school and university!
Not to mention getting out of this trashy apartment once and for all.
Grace Rivers
I'll come at 9 AM tomorrow then.
Landon grinned, miming a thumbs up.
Derek Smith
Excellent. We will be happy to have you amongst us, Miss Rivers.
Derek Smith
Have a good evening.
And just like that, I hung up and turned towards my brother, extremely excited.
Grace Rivers
They want me to start tomorrow!
Landon Rivers
That's amazing!
Grace Rivers
I'm texting my old Boss that I quit. I don't have any material possessions in that office anyway, so I don't need to go back.
I couldn't believe it. Me, getting hired by the Castella Corporation?
It was the dream of any graduate student to be deemed worthy of receiving an offer of employment from them.
Landon Rivers
Have you got smart clothes? Not some tattered suit, but a nice blouse and a pencil skirt?
Landon Rivers
You need to dress the part, leave an impression.
He rushed into my room, rummaging around my wardrobe.
His hands grabbed neatly ironed clothes and threw them over my bed, making me sigh.
Landon Rivers
No... no... no way... no... maybe, but no... aha!
Taking out a white blouse with long sleeves and a black ribbon for decoration around the neck as well as a pencil skirt which reached just above my knees, he handed them to me.
Landon Rivers
This, wear this.
Landon Rivers
Black and white will evoke professionalism while keeping you under the radar.
Landon Rivers
It will make you stand out yet blend in.
Landon Rivers
The perfect mix.
Standing out and blending in contrast each other.
It doesn't make any sense, but I trust his judgement.
Grace Rivers
Okay, it's late. You need to get your beauty sleep.
Landon Rivers
You know that you're just 15 seconds older than me, right?
Grace Rivers
Right, and that still makes me your older sister so get to sleep. You have school tomorrow.
Landon Rivers
And you have a new job to get to.
