Chapter 1 - Love
Love always takes on many shapes and forms.
Some people see it as a necessity while others see it as a luxury.
People believe that love is abusive and disgusting whereas others view love as something precious to protect.

I snapped out of my daydream, clutching my book tightly against my chest.
I looked up at my mother, who was sitting at the front seat of the car, sighing.

I know that you are an airhead but try and not zone out once you meet Darren.
I'm meeting Mother's new boyfriend...
I couldn't help but frown a little.
It's been six years since my parent's divorce. It still left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth even thinking about it.
My father held love above all, but it was the way that he showed it that was terrifying... and harmful.

There you are, zoning out again!
She pulled my cheek, making me laugh and giggle.

Geez, I'm here! I'm here!
My mother and I have always had such a great relationship. She has sacrificed everything for me, so I'm trying to repay her by working hard and grasping the opportunities that she's given me.
That's my way of thanking her, from the bottom of my heart.

I nodded, picking up the beautiful gift bag up from the ground.
I had prepared a gift for my mother's new boyfriend along with another for his son, my soon-to-be stepbrother.
I've never met him, but Darren told me that he likes most of the things that I do, so we should get along.

Shall we?
Extending me out a hand just as I put a foot out of the car, I smiled as she pulled me to my feet, almost making us both fall down.
We burst out laughing, hugging each other tightly while she tickled above my hips, making me twist and turn.

We don't want to keep Darren waiting, as you've said before.
Catherine Westfall
I know, I know...
Emilia Westfall
So... have you both done it yet?
She gasped, hitting me at the back of the head while blushing.
Catherine Westfall
Shame on you, Young Lady!
Catherine Westfall
You know that I want to wait until marriage.

And you should too.
Emilia Westfall
That is if I ever get a boyfriend. And you and I both know that I scare any man that comes near me off.
As we approached the door to the expensive apartment complex, she then held my cheeks and smiled.

Be patient. One day, you'll find a man just as amazing as you are. He will treasure you and monopolise you. That's how you know if they truly love you or not.

Don't make the mistake I made and marry too fast.
She's, of course, talking about my father. My birth father.
I could notice that the bitter taste in my mouth had transferred over to hers.
I then shot out a huge smile, taking her hand in mine.

Come on, turn that frown upside down!
Emilia Westfall
Darren won't want to marry you if you're always frowning like that.
Catherine Westfall
Well, I can't help that. I've got a misbehaving daughter who always somehow makes me frown.
We both giggled like a pair of best friends before walking into the lift and pushing onto Darren's floor.
However, as the door was closing, the lift next door opened and I saw a mop of blue hair disappear out of the door just as the lift's closed.

Chapter 2 - Best Friends
Darren Woods
There are my two girls!
Opening the door just as we arrived into the corridor, Darren greeted us with open arms.
He gave a chaste kiss to my mother while he gave a warm bear hug to me.

I'm spoiled. Getting two gorgeous girls for marrying one.

I've hit the jackpot.
We both chuckled as we walked in, handing the gift bag to Darren.

I picked out something for you and Leon. I hope that you will like the pattern.
Taking out the top box, he took the lid off, revealing a tie and tie clip.

Oh, this is great! It'll suit me, won't it, honey?
Catherine Westfall
Wow, it looks very professional.
Looking into the bag, he frowned as he saw Leon's gift, wrapped up all nice.
Darren Woods
I'm sorry, but Leon left just as you arrived.
Catherine Westfall
Oh, what a shame... I wanted him to meet Mia.
Darren Woods
Hmph... he's getting more and more unbearing ever since- well, it doesn't matter.

I heard that you'll both be making dinner for us tonight.

Yes, so you'd best stay out of our way. Mia barely allows me in the kitchen back at home as it is.

Hey, that isn't true! I just need a lot of space and our kitchen is small.
My mother chuckled as she pushed us into the kitchen.

Well today, I'll be your aide.
Darren Woods
Are you interested in cooking?
Emilia Westfall
Baking is more of my speciality but I enjoy cooking meals that I can eat. That's why I could never be a chef, Mother says.
Catherine Westfall
She'd eat all of the food that is meant for the customers.
Darren chuckled as he sat down on the couch, watching us both cook away.
Throwing flour into my face, making me all dirty, I immediately fought back.
Catherine Westfall
Eek! How dare you throw flour at your mother?
Emilia Westfall
How dare I? Oh, it's on!
Darren Woods
You both remind me of best friends.
Catherine Westfall
Well, Mia might be my daughter but she is my best friend too.
Darren Woods
Oh, talking about Mia... I know that your name is Emilia, so what do you want me to call you?
Emilia Westfall
Oh, Mia is fine.
Emilia Westfall
It's a short nickname and I've grown fond of it.
Darren Woods
Well then, Mia it is...

I call your mother Cathy when you're not around.
Emilia Westfall
Wait, really?

Hey, that was a secret!
Darren Woods
What? Can't a fiancé call his future wife a nickname?
That's right. They're getting married in two weeks.
I couldn't be happier for my mother.
At first, I was a little sceptic about Darren.
He was a successful businessman who is rich enough to afford the best apartment in an expensive building.
So why would he want a divorced mother and her daughter?
I soon found out that his intentions towards my mother were genuine.
And since he had a child himself from his previous marriage, he was fine with the fact that my mother had a child too.
If anything, he was excited to have a daughter.
He was widow ever since his wife died of a heart attack in the middle of the night.
It was a tragic event, but he pulled through and eventually met my mother.
I'm just happy that my mother is going to be with someone the rest of her life.

Chapter 3 - Tragedy

Oh goodness, we don't have the strawberries...
After making the pastry, my mother rummaged around the bag to find the strawberries, which were nowhere to be found.

Oh no! Are they not in there?
Catherine Westfall
I forgot to buy them! Oh goodness, am I that old already?
Emilia Westfall
I'll run down to the shop and get some.
Darren Woods
The nearest shop is in the middle of town. It isn't very practical to walk to.
Catherine Westfall
I'll drive there. It'll only take me a few minutes. I'll be back, okay?
Catherine Westfall
Love you, my darling girl.
Kissing me on the forehead, I giggled while she grabbed her purse and waved me goodbye.
And just like that, the door shut.

Mia, I need your help.

Your mother said that she didn't want a honeymoon but I think that she needs it.

Where's a place that she's always wanted to go to?

Hm... she really likes Paris. But if you were to bring here anywhere, it would be Greece.
Darren Woods
Greece? Why's that?

Because she adores Greek food, not to mention the beaches over there and gorgeous.
He looked at me and smiled.

Good choice. You indeed know your mother better than I do.

Little did we know that while we were looking at beautiful beaches and hotels... something terrible was happening.
And because of those strawberries, I got the worst news that I've ever heard in my life.
Not from my mother... but from a police officer who phoned me, announcing the death of my Mother.
Tears fell down my cheeks while my expression was locked in disbelief.
She was just speaking with me.
An idiot was speeding and ran a red light, smashing right into the side of my mother's car, killing them both instantly.
Leaving me truly alone in the world... and leaving Darren yet again without a wife.
That day... the heartbreak was real. I could feel it and this time, I couldn't conceal it.
It burnt a hole in my soul, paralysing my emotions of joy and happiness, replacing them with sadness and despair.
