Ahooded woman pulls a horse cart carrying a wooden long box through the countryside. Her hood flies through the wind to land on the branches of a tree, and later, falls into the hands of men pursuing her. At night, the woman, Jang Man-wol stops at a shelter and asks her host—a mysterious old woman—about the inn where the souls of the dead can go to rest. The woman knows about ‘the inn off the moon,’ but says that only the dead can go there, pointing behind Man-wol. We see a group of spirits—men she has ruthlessly killed—standing behind her.
Man-wol wants to take responsibility for the souls, but gets called arrogant by the old woman. She is ready to even kill herself in order to get to the inn, but the woman informs her that the dead are heading to the inn of the moon on their own. The men who were pursuing Man-wol appear on the scene, but when she raises her sword to fight them, they turn to dust. We see the shadow of a man behind her, which turns into a tree when she plunges her sword into it and swallows the sword. As Man-wol watches, the inn materializes in front of her. The old woman mutters that the inn has met its new owner and leaves with Man-wol’s horse and wooden box, which we now see is filled with random objects caked in blood.
It’s the year 1998. A man apologizes to his son for not having money to buy him gifts on his birthday. The old woman from the inn (SEO YI-SOOK), now in the guise of a flower seller, approaches the child to tell him that he’s going to be blessed in the future. Not far from there, policemen drag the body of a woman out of water as her ghost stares at a suspicious-looking man on the scene.
Jang Man-wol, now dressed like a wealthy heiress, walks the corridors of what appears to be the inn, except now it’s much fancier. The walls in her office are adorned with pictures of her throughout the years—and she hasn’t aged in any of them. She asks the manager of the hotel to open for business, but doesn’t want to see anyone who died too gruesomely. She stares at the moon and mutters that she’s sick of it. The neon sign of ‘HOTEL SUNSHINE’ flickers to life, and what looks like a tiny establishment from the outside slowly transforms into a grand, multi-storey, red-bricked structure.
Koo Hyun-moo , the boy’s father from before, is on the run from police for stealing. He trips and loses consciousness a second before getting up and running again. He comes across Hotel del Luna and sees the ghost of the drowned woman go in with a concierge. He follows her into a grand lobby and sits with her, wondering why she’s drenched and not realizing she’s a ghost. When she asks how he died, he misunderstands and thinks she’s asking how he got hurt. As he explains, we see that his body is still on the road where he fell—but he’s not dead yet.
Hyun-moo runs into Hotel del Luna’s Manager Noh , who immediately recognizes that he’s not dead and therefore not supposed to be at the hotel. He asks Ji Hyun-joong, the concierge (P.O), to escort him out. Hyun-moo comes across an ornate vase with a gold snake on it, thinks of stealing it but changes his mind. The snake turns sentient and follows Hyun-moo, who walks into the outdoor swimming pool area and is stunned to realize that it is an actual beach. Next, he walks into a sky bar on the top of the building and wonders if the hotel was always this big.
Hotel del Luna’s staff is terrified of Man-wol’s temper and discusses how to catch the trespassing human before their boss finds out. Man-wol notes the missing snake on the vase and realizes that a thief has entered the hotel. Hyun-moo comes across the old tree within the hotel/inn’s compounds and notes the exotic flowers growing on it. He remembers his son asking him to give him flowers for his birthday. As soon as he plucks the flowers, he gets knocked off his feet. Turns out that Man-wol has found him, and as she places her heel on Hyun-moo’s chest, she realizes that he can feel pain and is therefore not dead. When he denies that he stole from the hotel, the golden snake leaps out of his jacket. His body begins to fade, and Man-wol informs him that he’s dying.
In a hospital, doctors try to save Hyun-moo’s physical form as his son, Chan-sung, stands in a corner and cries. Man-wol is surprised to note the flowers Hyun-moo picked from the tree, because the tree has never bloomed before. Hyun-moo insists that the flowers were a present for his son and Man-wol realizes that the tree wants her to save him. She makes him promise to give her his son after 20 years, and on that condition, gives him his life back. Chan-sung watches his father come back to life and calls the doctors.
The next day, while leaving the hospital, Hyun-moo and Chan-sung happen to see the funeral of someone Hyun-moo thinks he recognizes. It’s the drowned woman’s ghost from last night, who we realize was a policewoman. Hyun-moo is struck with the realization that the events of last night actually happened.
The woman’s ghost tells Man-wol that she was an undercover officer who died after her identity was compromised. Man-wol informs her that because she died doing righteous work, she’ll be taken to the afterlife in a top quality limousine. The woman’s spirit, however, wants to catch the man she was investigating. Man-wol agrees to help her in return for money.
Man-wol turns up at the an event being held by Park Kyu-ho (delightful cameo by KIM WON-HAE), the mayor of Beom-cheon. The suspicious-looking man at the scene of our policewoman’s death is also there. Man-wol walks into the venue holding a gun, but no one except the mayor can actually see her. She fires at him as the policewoman’s ghost appears before him. In a panic, the mayor blurts out the truth—that he was the one who asked his men to kill her.
Man-wol is excited to find out that the policewoman’s ghost paid for her services in diamonds she must have busted while she was alive. Her excitement doesn’t last long however, because Manager Noh takes almost all of it away to pay the hotel’s debts and the loans she took out to enjoy her luxurious lifestyle. He also plans to send financial assistance to Hyun-moo’s son, who will replace him as manager when he’s of age.
Hyun-moo checks his bank balance and realizes that he definitely sold his son to some strange woman. He tries to find Hotel del Luna to return the money and call off the deal, but fails to find it in the daytime. Man-wol sees Chan-sung and asks Manager Noh to send him flowers on his birthday every year so that he remembers his fate.
In the year 2019, a grown up Koo Chan-sung (YEO JIN-GOO) gets a job at one of the top hotels in Korea. When his boss asks why he didn’t take the job last year, he reveals that he had promised his late father that he wouldn’t live in Korea for 20 years. Now that 20 years have passed, he’s back. He describes Hotel del Luna to his boss, wondering if a hotel like that ever existed, and sighs with relief when she can’t recognize it.
Chan-sung’s relief evaporates when a staff informs him that someone sent flowers for his birthday. Along with the flowers is a note by Hotel del Luna’s owner Jang Man-wol, asking him to come to work starting tomorrow with instructions on how to get to the hotel. Chan-sung stands at the subway station wondering if he should go, then chucks the flowers in a bin.
When Chan-sung gets on a train, he’s surprised to find an empty carriage in an otherwise crowded train. Man-wol sits alone, holding the flowers he threw away earlier, and Chan-sung realizes who she is. Man-wol asks if he ran from country to country so she wouldn’t come after him. When Chan-sung asks her to give up on him, she decides to give him an unusual birthday present. She blows over his eyes and lets him leave.
Chan-sung wonders what she did to him and decides to pack his bags and run away again. While waiting for a cab, however, he sees a woman who is wearing glasses at night. Back at the hotel, Man-wol cackles at the shock Chan-sung is about to receive, but Manager Noh notes that seeing a ghost for the first time without a warning could be fatal for the guy.
The woman takes off her sunglasses. Chan-sung is stunned to see holes in place of her eyes and runs away in the opposite direction, screaming. The ghost is about to get him when Man-wol shows up, informing him that her gift—the ability to see ghosts—will work everywhere he goes.
Man-wol and Chan-sung end up at a famous dumpling restaurant and in true millennial fashion, she takes pictures of her food. The guy who used to be Mayor of Beom-cheon before Man-wol exposed him notices her. Man-wol informs Chan-sung that not all ghosts are scary and most look normal, and points to the ghost of a kid eating in the same restaurant. Chan-sung wonders if she’s also a ghost, and she turns serious, replying she’s not dead or alive, she’s just there.
When they’re out of the restaurant, Man-wol sends Chan-sung to buy her tea, while she deals with the ex-Mayor. When the mayor stabs her in the chest, she flashes back to her past, when she killed people with similar ruthlessness. Chan-sung returns and is horrified by what he sees. As Man-wol lays slumped over a pole, she tells Chan-sung that if he turns away now, she will let him go, and Chan-sung takes the chance.
Soon enough, however, he returns with a wagon and offers to take her to a hospital or back to her hotel. Annoyed, Man-wol stands up and removes the knife from her heart. She tells him that he’s just lost his chance to run away. She magically sends the knife zooming to find the mayor and end his life. Chan-sung tries to sneak away, but Man-wol informs him she won’t hesitate to kill him.
wang Man-wol announces that if Chan-sung tries running from her, she’ll kill him. Chan-sung goes looking for the guy who stabbed Man-wol but finds only ashes. A hand rises out of the smoldering ashes and grabs his shoe, making him jump back in fear. Man-wol advises Chan-sung to be careful of vengeful spirits and drags him to a mall to buy him new shoes. A cleaner with ‘death’ written on his uniform vacuums the ashes.
Despite Chan-sung’s protests, Man-wol buys fancy shoes for him and asks him to come to work wearing it. Chan-sung can’t understand what the purpose of a hotel for ghosts is, and Man-wol informs him that her staff fulfill the requests of spirits who died with regrets.
At the scene of a car accident, the grim reaper informs the dead man’s spirit ( named Kim Byron du) that he’s here to escort him. He sends Kim Byeon-du off in a car whose number plate reads “To Heaven.” The old woman from the inn, who’s now a flower seller, arrives at the scene to wish the man a safe passage to afterlife. The scene shifts to a long bridge over the river of death, on which several people cross to the afterlife holding the old woman’s flowers. Kim Byeon-du suddenly stops walking, and we hear Man-wol’s voice explain that sometimes, souls become lost and are unable to cross over. Chan-sung asks which side of the bridge Man-wol is on, since she’s neither alive nor a ghost, but the appearance of the blind ghost shuts him up. Man-wol seems disturbed by his question and leaves.
In a park, a woman feeds stray cats with her daughter. The little girl is distracted by a shadow and follows it, coming to a stop in front of a huge tiger which she calls ‘big kitty’. Her mother comes running and we realize that she can’t see the tiger like her daughter can. Man-wol stands in front of the ancient tree in the hotel and wonders if it’s alive, because it hasn’t produced leaves or flowers for centuries. Manager Noh (JUNG DONG-HWAN) tells her that the tree contains her spirit. Suddenly, she announces that a special guest has arrived and goes to greet it. We see the huge tiger walk towards the hotel, but instead of going in, it keeps walking. Man-wol remarks how dangerous it is for a spirit like the tiger’s to walk around without a body.
Chan-sung’s friend wants to throw him a party to celebrate his return to Korea, but Chan-sung is in no mood to celebrate and sulkily stares at Man-wol’s letter and the blind ghost who is now following him everywhere.
The next day, Chan-sung shows up at Hotel Del Luna and notes that it’s not as grand as his father told him. He’s greeted by the concierge/front desk staff Ji Hyun-joong (P.O) and explains that he’s not a guest, showing Hyun-joong the letter from Man-wol. Hyun-joong addresses him as Mr. Manager and leads him to Manager Noh, who brings him to Man-wol’s office. Chan-sung is curious if Manager Noh is also a spirit, but the man reveals he’s just as human as Chan-sung is.
In Man-wol’s office, Chan-sung is stunned when he looks at her photos from all the years she’s been in charge of the hotel. Manager Noh reveals that he’s worked at the hotel for 30 years, and he’s the only one who can age among the staff. When he announces that it’s time for Chan-sung to take his place, Chan-sung grows nervous. Man-wol arrives, and hearing Chan-sung still trying to get out of working for her, threatens to send more ghosts his way. Chan-sung pointedly asks what services does a hotel for ghosts offer, and Man-wol replies that spirits need healing before passing into afterlife. We see a hotel staff, Choi Seo-hee (BAE HAE-SUN), go from room to room attending to the guests. Each room differs in style, climate, and facilities according to the guests’ demands—be it a library or a mountainside.
Chan-sung doesn’t understand why a hotel for ghosts needs a human manager and Man-wol runs him through a list of things only a human can do for them. Chan-sung changes tactics, offering to pay back the money she gave his father to raise him. Man-wol takes the money, and Chan-sung assumes that he’s free to go. On his way out, however, he sees another ghost and rushes back to Man-wol, demanding that she restore his sight to normal. Man-wol just asks that, since he can’t stop seeing the ghosts and live a normal life anymore, he just work at her hotel. Chan-sung hides behind her as she steps out. Hotel del Luna’s bartender, Kim Sun-bi , is unsure if Chan-sung will be able to take Manager Noh’s place, but Manager Noh is hopeful because Chan-sung doesn’t seem afraid of Man-wol.
Chan-sung drives Man-wol in one of her fancy cars and laughs when he sees someone like her wearing a seat belt. He asks where they’re going and now it’s her turn to laugh. She informs him that they’re going to catch a tiger and the color drains from his face. They stand in front of a tiger’s sculpture at an exhibition and Man-wol grows wistful when she realizes that the dead tiger is being kept alive like this. Chan-sung remembers her words from the other day: “I’m not dead yet, I’m just here.”
We see a man having recurring nightmares about the tiger as Chan-sung reveals that the chairman of the hotel which hired him brought back a tiger from North Korea, as a token of friendship. While sending off another guest to the afterlife in the black limo, Manager Noh informs the grim reaper of his retirement plans, but gets told that he doesn’t have much time left.
Chan-sung and Man-wol are at yet another restaurant, and Chan-sung mentions how he already has a job offer from a top hotel. Man-wol again points out that he can see ghosts now and can’t work anywhere except her hotel. Chan-sung defiantly says that he’ll learn to ignore the ghosts, and Man-wol sets him a challenge to get her coffee without spilling, while dodging about 100 ghosts in his way. Chan-sung manages to succeed and Man-wol leaves, feeling annoyed.
Manager Noh says his goodbyes to Hotel del Luna’s staff. They wonder who will control Man-wol’s temper when Noh leaves. Man-wol storms in and Noh asks her permission to leave. Sure that Chan-sung won’t last at his new job, Man-wol lets him leave. Man-wol’s staff wonder how she can let Manager Noh leave without a word of acknowledgement for his years of service.
At his new job, Chan-sung immediately runs into a ghost and has to work very hard to ignore him. He gets spotted by his manager, who wants to introduce him to some VIP clients, but right then, the blind ghost reappears. Unable to decide between making a sound and being caught by the ghost and greeting his manager, Chan-sung ends up jumping into the swimming pool. Man-wol turns up to tease him as he sits alone by the poolside, completely drenched. She’s on her way to find out what happened to the tiger and drags him along.
They end up at the house of Chairman Hwang who owns the hotel where he is working. Chan-sung is against going in, but Man-wol instructs him to introduce himself as a new employee. As Chan-sung makes small talk, Man-wol enters Chairman Hwang’s bedroom and asks about the painting of Mount Baekdu. The man explains how he received the painting as a gift from North Korea, along with a tiger, who never mated and died alone. As Chan-sung spots the shadow of a huge tiger, all the glass in the room shatter to pieces.
Man-wol makes an excuse to visit another fancy restaurant with Chan-sung, and informs him that the tiger’s spirit is waiting for the Chairman to die. Chan-sung wants to help the man, so Man-wol asks him to get her the North Korean painting in return. Enraged at her ways, Chan-sung leaves, refusing to perform extortion. He meets the blind ghost on his way home and challenges her to take her glasses off, saying he’s not afraid anymore. He finds Manager Noh waiting for him at his friend’s place, who advises him to not judge Man-wol using human logic and find joy in a job that opens up a secret world for him. When Chan-sung’s friend drops by to ask whom he is talking to, Chan-sung realizes that Manager Noh is a ghost now.
Concierge Hyun-joong (P.O) informs Man-wol that Manager Noh has returned to the hotel as a guest. When she goes to say goodbye, Noh tells her that had ne not met Man-wol, he wouldn’t have got to live a meaningful life by serving the guests of the hotel. Man-wol tears up and apologizes that he never got to create a family, but Noh says that in the years he worked for her, she became his family. He leaves with the wish that the time that has stopped for Man-wol starts passing again.
Chan-sung realises that Man-wol wanted Chairman Hwang’s painting not because it was worth a lot, but because it was the tiger’s home and they were a set. At the hotel, Man-wol tells the tiger’s spirit to rest, and it crosses over into the painting that depicts its home. Chan-sung bumps into the blind ghost, but this time, instead of ignoring her, he drops her at Hotel del Luna and helps her see in the process.
The next day, Chan-sung texts an apology to Man-wol for misunderstanding her. He crosses paths with a dangerous warrior spirit at his hotel hotel, which soon begins attacking him. Man-wol shows up to rescue Chan-sung and he passes out. Suddenly, we are transported to a flashback from Man-wol’s life as human as she talks to someone about wanting to settle in one place like a tree. Chan-sung wakes up in Man-wol’s office, and Hyun-joong comes to inform him that Man-wol is waiting for him. This is Chan-sung’s first time in the hotel at night, and he’s in awe of how grand the hotel is. He remembers Manager Noh’s words about a secret world. As Mon-wol descends the stairs looking gorgeous, Chan-sung’s gaze doesn’t leave her.
Wan-wol stands staring at the moon in front of the ancient tree and mulls over her existence as someone who is neither alive nor dead. A flashback into her past informs us that she used to be the leader of a group of bandits who attacked and stole from noblemen. On one particular mission, Go Chung-myung —one of the guards of the group they had attacked—follows Man-wol. She takes him hostage by hitting his head with a rock, but later in their journey, when she gets caught in quicksand, she has to cut loose his ropes so he can save her and ends up becoming his hostage. He then reveals that he’s not some low-ranking officer but the captain of the guards, but before he can bring Man-wol to his masters, her partner arrives and rescues her.
In the present, flower seller aka Goddess Mago interrupts Man-wol’s introspection by remarking that the the moon looks exactly like it was on the night they met for the first time, a thousand years ago. Man-wol says that she’s tired of not dying, and Mago points out that her spirit is tied to the ancient tree. When she became the owner of Hotel del Luna, time stopped flowing for her. Man-wol rebukes her for talking nonsense and leaves.
Mago remarks that Man-wol’s arrogant nature hasn’t changed one bit, and decides to help her. She sets some flowers blooming on the ancient tree through mere touch, the same purple blooms which Chan-sung’s father tried to pick. She places the purple flowers over unconscious Chan-sung’s chest. We see Chan-sung dream about Man-wol smiling at the guard who saved her life. When Chan-sung wakes up, however, the flowers have disappeared.
Chan-sung finds Man-wol and thanks her for saving him, and she quips that it was only because he was wearing the shoes she gave to him. Chan-sung remembers seeing her in his dream and asks if she cast a spell on him. But then he compares the relaxed, smiling Man-wol in the dream to the cranky version in front of him and decides that it couldn’t have been her. Man-wol takes this to mean that he had an inappropriate dream about her that he cannot share and hilariously teases him.
He can’t figure out how Man-wol single-handedly brought him to the hotel, and a flashback tells us that Man-wol had called Hyun-joong (P.O) to inhabit Chan-sung’s unconscious body and made him walk all the way to the hotel. Hyun-joong had thrown a tantrum when it was time to leave the body, and Man-wol had to literally slap Hyun-joong’s spirit out.
Man-wol gives Chan-sung a tour of the hotel, explaining that while it doesn’t appear to ordinary humans, people with a developed psychic sense can sometimes see it. To deal with the curious humans, they have a special room that allows them to check in but they can never leave. When they get to the swimming pool area, Chan-sung is stunned to see a private beach in the middle of Seoul. Man-wol informs him that the area inside the hotel isn’t part of the real world, and maps and phones are useless within the premises.
Finally, they end up in the sky bar. Chan-sung marvels at the view from the top, which isn’t real as well. He wonders if Man-wol is real and gingerly touches her. She puts her hand over his heart and is fascinated by what a beating heart feels like. By this point, Chan-sung is curious enough about both Manwol and the hotel to agree to work there. She suddenly smiles at him, and he’s transported to the image of her smiling in his dream.
On a busy road, a girl falls over a car from an overpass. Another girl named Kim Yu-na (MINA runs away from the same overpass. Yu-na gets home and fiddles with a necklace in her room. She then feels blood drops on her face, and looks up to see the spirit of the girl who fell. The spirit steals Yu-na’s body by pushing her spirit out of it as Yu-na screams in terror.
Man-wol is celebrating finally getting a new manager, but her staff seems less than excited that Chan-sung, who was third on their list of candidates got the job. Man-wol revisits her previous attempts to recruit a manager, starting with a priest (hilarious cameo by Lee Joon-gi) who became too obsessed with exorcism after Man-wol gave him the ability to see ghosts.
The second candidate was an astronaut (cameo by Lee Si-eon), who pushed her out of space. Sun-bi (SHIN JUNG-GEUN) tries asking how many managers Man-wol has had since she took charge of the hotel, but she acts like its not a big deal to her that she’s outlived all her managers. When the staff leaves, however, we see her sadly remembering Manager Noh. She also remembers exactly how many managers she’s had, and notes that Chan-sung is the 49th one.
Hotel del Luna’s staff officially introduce themselves to Chan-sung. Sun-bi used to be a reputed scholar who died 500 years ago, and is now a bartender at the hotel. Seo-hee (BAE HAE-SUN) was a noblewoman, killed by her own family around 200 years ago and is lingering so she can watch the last member of her family die. She’s the head of housekeeping. Hyun-joong, the youngest of them, was a soldier who died during the Korean war and is waiting for her sister to pass on with her. All of them came to the hotel as guests and later extended their stay by working.
Chan-sung wonders if Man-wol was a guest who later became the hotel’s owner. Sun-bi starts to tell him about how Mago bound Man-wol to the spirit of an ancient tree in the hotel as punishment, but Seo-hee stops Sun-bi from saying more. She asks Chan-sung not to be too curious, because the more he knows the more he’ll become tethered to the hotel.
Night turns to morning, and in his room, Chan-sung reminds himself of the real world but then finds the magical blue flower which Mago placed on his chest. The flower vanishes in his hands, and with an ominous feeling, Chan-sung realizes that his and Man-wol’s worlds are colliding.
He goes to bed and has another dream about Man-wol and Chung-myung, who are happily sipping alcohol around a campfire this time. The guard notices the sign of the moon that Man-wol uses to mark her possessions, and grabs her hand to teach her how to write her name.
Man-wol’s call wakes Chan-sung, asking him to come to the hotel. She gives him his first task as the manager—selling the Mount Baekdu painting that the tiger crossed over into. Chan-sung is worried about the spirit of the tiger, but Man-wol reveals that it left after a few days. She is dressed up head to toe in extravagant jewels and promises to buy something for Chan-sung if he sells the painting at double its original price. Irritated, Chan-sung calls her a money ghost and proceeds to roar hilariously at the painting to make sure the tiger’s spirit is gone.
On his way to sell the painting, Chan-sung spots Kim Yu-na’s spirit on the same overpass her friend fell from. Yu-na realizes that Chan-sung can see her and materializes in front of his car, making him break suddenly. She explains her problem to Chan-sung, who brings her to the hotel. Man-wol is frustrated that instead of bringing money, Chan-sung has brought a guest.
Yu-na’s dead friend, Soo-jeong, who is in Yu-na’s body, visits her own memorial at school. Her classmates are surprised upon seeing Yu-na remembering Soo-jeong since she used to bully Soo-jeong when she was alive. Man-wol and Chan-sung visit the house of Yu-na’s parents and Man-wol immediately senses an opportunity to make money, seeing as Yu-na is the only child of wealthy parents. She realizes that the grudge of the dead girl’s ghost is operating through the necklace. Chan-sung follows Soo-jeong to figure out why she’s stealing her friend’s body, and discovers that while bullying Soo-jeong and trying to steal her necklace, Yu-na happened to push Soo-jeong from the overpass, killing her.
Man-wol, meanwhile, speaks to Yu-na, who asks her to get her body back from Soo-jeong. Man-wol explains that deep seated grudges like these don’t heal so easily. She goes straight to Yu-na’s parents and reveals that their daughter killed someone. Not surprisingly, Yu-na’s parents offer money to keep Man-wol quiet. She visits Chan-sung, who is moved by Soo-jeong’s story, but refuses to let her destroy Yu-na’s body. He sees Man-wol and begs her to give back the necklace to Soo-jeong so she can keep living in Yu-na’s body, but Man-wol reveals that she has already returned it.
In a flashback, we see that Man-wol had offered Yu-na’s parents two choices—send an apology to the dead girl’s parents or pay an exorbitant price for the necklace, which is the only evidence against their daughter. Her parents assume that the the price Man-wol mentions is money, but later, Man-wol tells Yu-na that if her parents burn the necklace, she can never receive forgiveness, which means she can never go back to her body. Yu-na runs to stop her parents from destroying the necklace, but can only scream in terror as her parents carry out their plans. Her soul turns to ashes.
Man-wol allows Soo-jeong to live in Yu-na’s body and admires the gold she snagged from Yu-na’s parents, but Chan-sung is worried about how Soo-jeong will feel feel living in her killer’s body. Man-wol carelessly remarks that everyone has to pay a price for their choices and Chan-sung asks if she’s also paying the price for an evil deed by being bound in the hotel. She turns serious, but refuses to elaborate and throws a tantrum about her reservation for a new car being cancelled.
Back at the hotel, Hyun-joong advises Chan-sung to always have champagne on hand to deal with Man-wol’s temper. He brings a carton of champagne from their stores and Chan-sung notes the sign on it, which is the same sign of the moon he saw Man-wol use in his dream. Chan-sung realizes that his dreams aren’t random, but actual insights into Man-wol’s past.
Chan-sung looks through Man-wol’s photos through the eras and comes across a sketch of the ancient tree her spirit is tied to. His search for the tree leads him to the garden, which is where Man-wol finds him, staring at the tree. Chan-sung realizes that this is the tree his father made the mistake of touching, which he’s paying the price for.
He tells Man-wol that he’s been having dreams about her past, and surmises that she’s stuck at the hotel because she’s waiting for the man she loved. Man-wol freezes when Chan-sung mentions details from her past and we see flashbacks of her in every era, waiting for someone at the hotel. Chan-sung confesses that she’s taken over his thoughts, both when he’s awake and when he’s asleep, as she stares at him in stunned silence.
