Cold Haven

1

I kept my eyes on my book throughout the whole lesson. Professor Shou was just repeating the same information we already know, about after school, we are to meet at the Library of Knowledge to receive our grimoires and activating our full magic abilities.

Did I care about my magic? Not really. I already knew there was nothing special about me when I was the only one in class who couldn't reciprocate simple spells. Father said I needed to focus and learn to control my magic which I later on did but I still have no interest in being a sorcerer. I did want to protect myself from the demons but If my father, King Odon already vowed to protect me at all costs why should I awaken my full potential. Why should I assign a contract with the antichrist, a human form of a demon to help me?

I sighed closing my book as I was already finished with it and started to pay attention to what Professor Shou was saying. But I soon couldn't bear to keep my eyes open as he began to speak of the different types of Antichrists there were. Just the name of them sounds awful, the enchantress' get to make contracts with beautiful fairies while we get stuck with hideous demons. Now it makes sense as to why they call us evil but we're just like them with the same goals.

I began to shut my eyes and lay my head flat against the table. This lecture wasn't getting any more interesting so I might as well take a nap.

"If you end up with an untamed Antichrist, don't say nobody tried to teach you how to tame one when all you did was read and sleep in class" I heard someone next to me say. I turned my head to the right. Oh great, Miss Prissy is speaking to me. It was bad having to hear her speak but having to look at that annoying face makes me want to vomit.

"I would have thought you would have figured it out already? That I don't care."

"So she speaks words. Everyone says you're mute but now I know they were wrong" She continues to make conversation with me. It takes all of me not to roll my eyes into the back of my head in annoyance.

"Yeah," I say unamused, turning my head back around. Maybe this time she'll stop talking.

"My name is Himari"

Still. Don't. Care.

"What's your name?"

Why. me.

I groaned, "If I tell you would you leave me alone"

"Maybe" She teased, I don't know what's she's trying to accomplish by knowing my name but she said maybe.

I'll take that chance easily.

"Yuzuki Chi"

Her eyes widen a bit as I spoke my last name, "You're the daughter of your highness, King Odon. That's weird considering you're the most honorable person here yet everyone hates you"

I sat up in my seat resting my elbow on the desk and my hand under my chin. "You must be new."

I don't want to bring back old memories but everyone thought of me as a freak. I never wanted to train or fight in battles nor did I want to learn magic. It was something forced upon me and I made it a habit of reminding everyone that if I ruled I would banish all types of magic. I would have been expelled if my father didn't rule the whole kingdom. If Himari knew this she would sure distance herself from me like the rest.

"I'm actually a late entry. My parents didn't have enough gold to get me in university on time so they had me waitlisted until today. And I thought I shouldn't waste any more time and try to make friends" She smiled innocently. I will admit, she caught my attention knowing she wasn't a spoiled and arrogant brat like most of these students.

"That surprisingly makes me like you a little bit more now" I smiled back at her. Doesn't mean I want to befriend her though.

"Okay, that's it for homeroom. Don't forget we're all meeting at the Library of Knowledge after classes" Professor Shou said before dismissing us. I, Of course, was the last person to walk out the door.

It didn't occur to me that someone was calling my name since I had my headphones in until I turned around to see Professor Shou chasing after me. I removed an earplug from my ear and I waited for him to catch up. Once he did, it's not like I didn't know what he was going to say already.

"Yuzuki. Please, I beg you. Don't skip the Antichrist summoning this evening."

"Don't worry. There would be about 10 guards watching my every move to make sure I'm there." I put back on my headphones and I left a relieved Professor Shou to sigh.

"Alright now in any second those doors will open and in there you will find your grimoire that contains the stone that will awaken your powers and antichrist" Professor Shou stood tall and proud as this was the first time he ever leads a class of promising sorcerers and me. "You may now enter and don't rush. You'll find your grimoire when it glows. Only your eyes can see it glow."

Everyone chatted in excitement as they were to about to find out what kind of magic was hidden inside them. Some held special elemental mage powers like Fire, Ice, Wind, etc. Maybe Earth Magic or Light magic. It sometimes depends on your ancestry or you're just a basic magic user which most of us are. My father has magic from time and space. Also called Cosmic magic, it's very powerful and uses a lot of concentrated mana that I know I don't have.

I searched around the library which was huge. I didn't know how they expect us to find our one book where they're almost hundreds of thousands in here. There are very old ones from the beginning of magic and there are ones that were recently developed for a new kind of magic. A lot are replicas but altered to fit yourself.

An hour passed and more than half the class have received their grimoires. I was getting a bit nervous, maybe I'm not cut out to be a great sorcerer after all. After all that effort I did forcing myself to learn magic I didn't care about. It would make me angry for all that work to go to waste.

So I actually started to look, and I looked everywhere. The thing is I should have a sense at where my grimoire was but I have no idea where it is. Each floor I climb I get the same feeling of emptiness in my body, nothing is calling to me.

It was when I finally gave up. I sat by a bookshelf a the top floor, all by myself. Everyone has gotten theirs by now so they didn't need to come this high up. No one needed to come halfway up but why did I need to take six hours to search the whole library and find nothing. It's not fair.

I heard muffles of everyone chatting from the bottom using the little magic I had to enhance my hearings. Everyone sounds so happy to discover what powers they'll master yet my mockery of magic only punished me at the end. I guess this is my punishment for not caring.

I sighed, "Oh well. Father will probably disown me  but at least I know my wish came true."

I got up started to walk down the stairs where the rest of the class was waiting. I'm going to be one of the rare sorcerers who doesn't wield any kind of magic. Maybe I can write books now, I smiled.

"It's getting late so we'll host the Antichrist summoning ceremony tomorrow morning. Make sure to study new spells starting tonight" Professor Shou dismissed all of us.

I was walking home when I felt someone tap my shoulder.

"You look sad," Himari said, I knew it was her the minute she tapped me. She was following behind me the whole time.

"You got your grimoire? What kind of magic does it hold?" I ignored her last statement. It wasn't that I was sad, I was disappointed. What would my father think of me?

"Yeah! It doesn't say specifically but there's plenty of spells about manipulating plants and their energy." She opened her grimoire to the first page to show me and it amazed me to see all the spells it held. "I don't know what my stone is yet but we'll find out tomorrow. But- where's your grimoire?"

"I don't have one"

She stopped holding my hand so I'd stop with her, "Wait, you didn't search for your grimoire? You can't do things like that now we have to go back."

She tugged me back down the sidewalk to where the library is but she's got it all wrong, "No Himari"

I yanked my hand back but she wouldn't budge, "We're going back there and you're going to get your grimoire whether you want to or not"

"But I searched everywhere. I don't have one. I wasn't meant to be a sorcerer so I have to accept it"

"That's absurd!" She yelled, we were still on our way back to the Library meaning she's too stubborn to understand that I'm not powerful enough to be a sorcerer. "You were born with magic right?"

"Yes"

"You can use your magic now?"

"Kind of" I lied,

"Lies. It doesn't make any sense. Non-magic users know they aren't sorcerers from birth but you are long past that. You have magic, it's not possible for you to not have a grimoire." We made it back to the Library, the place was empty meaning there might be a lot less stress for me than it was before.

"This isn't a good idea. I don't think I'll find anything here."

"You need to look harder. You probably weren't focusing harder with your magic energy. Try one more time and I'll be there every step of the way"

I was shocked to hear that Himari would do this for me. I don't think anyone would care if I were to spend the rest of my life without magic.

"Why do you care so much?" I said looking down, it's not like I was any nice to her before.

"Because we're friends" She smiled warmly.

"You weren't lying when you said you looked at everyone floor," Himari said, we were both exhausted from spending five hours searching the library together.

"I told you. I didn't think I would get punished like this" I laughed.

"It's not possible though! I'll have to speak to the headmaster about this tomorrow and then I'll speak to the King if I have to" She threatened but in reality, no one can change faith. Maybe I was born this way.

We both sat down in the middle of the last floor where the dome window above us had the full moon glowing so bright. I never saw the moon glow like that as I watched it.

"It's getting late I said. We should get going." I said but both of us seem stuck watching the beautiful moon glow.

"Yuzuki"

"Yeah?"

"Is it just me or is something falling from the moon?" She asked.

I was confused at first but looking back up there was indeed something falling from the sky. I was fixated on it like a trance until Himari pushed me out the way as something crashed through the dome window. Landing flat on the ground in front of both of us.

"Is that.." She said and I looked closely at the glowing object that fell from the moon.

I didn't know how it was possible but it was a book.

It was my grimoire.

"Holy shit" I almost stumbled back in fear, why would my grimoire drop from the sky like that. It's not possible, it's not natural?

"Holy shit is correct. Open it." She said pushing me forward.

I had to admit I was scared to open the probably cursed object but it was glowing so that meant I had to open it. The content it held amazed me once I opened it. I never heard of this type of magic before, it was never in our history books. None of the famous sorcerers wield this kind of magic.

"Lunar Magic? What's that?" I asked Himari. She came closer to take a look in the book herself and what she read amazed her as well.

"This-, this is forbidden magic Yuzuki. Lunar Magic was so powerful, sorcerers from the beginning of time had it sealed away in the moon so it never reached the hands of another sorcerer. I thought it was only a myth."

"A myth? Then how is it right in front of me right now?"

"You underestimate yourself too much. It means your mana was strong enough to trigger the grimoire and break the seal. Imagine if you never came back? Tonight was a full moon." She was so awestruck, she took the book completely away from me to read for herself. I didn't understand anything inside it so I didn't mind. "Wow, I completely understand why they didn't want this to get into the wrong hands. Skimming through a handful of spells you can teleport, lunar aura where you can use lunar energy for defensive purposes, Lunar healing-"

"Healing magic is completely forbidden and against the law" I shut the book and removed it from her grip. She was too excited about this. Imagine if my father found out I could wield this kind of magic. Healing magic is dark and could only lead to more bloodshed. Magic always has a cost.

"No, using Healing magic to cure diseases and bring people back to life is illegal. But healing wombs and small sicknesses isn't"

"This is dangerous. I could only imagine what antichrist would be like" I sighed,

"This is awesome. I can't wait to see what your antichrist would be like" She completely disregarded what I said and said the complete opposite.

I know one thing and I'm not looking forward to tomorrow.

I tried calling my father last night on my portable net to tell him the good news but he was out of town and completely unreachable. It's hard not being able to live with him but not even getting to talk to him when I want to is worse.

I've been living on my own since I was 13 and had to move away from the castle to attend academy in the city. I live alone in a nice one bedroom dorm. Yeah, I have the guards outside my door watching me 24/7 from my fathers orders but I still got lonely.

Right now was probably the earliest I could possibly wake up and I only have twenty minutes to get ready, eat and walk to school. But even after taking a quick shower and eating a energy bar, I only have five minutes to get to school on time before the Antichrist summoning ceremony.

Just my luck.

I glanced at the grimoire in my hands and I remembered one of the spells Himari said I possessed. Even without my stone I wonder if I could pull off a teleportation spell.

I set the book down in the counter, skimming through most of the difficult spells I found the one I was looking for.

"Teleportation spell" It says to picture the place I wanted to go in my mind. They say beginners can't go farther than 1 mile. Simple enough. I read the words that make the spell and it's in a language I've never heard before. I decided to rely on my correct pronunciations and hope for the best, "Illulso Telegra Exporus Tranquii"

I waited for 30 seconds for something to happen and absolutely nothing did. I glance at the rest of the spell and written at the bottom in ink it said: Magic energy must be close to maximum when casting.

Sigh.

Now I have to walk to school and be even more late because I wasted more time. This is why I hate magic.

They couldn't afford to get us any seats to help us get through this torture. So far most of the class has gotten on stage to summon their antichrist for all of us to see. I don't personally don't find anything entertaining about this but it's university. The professors always find a way to find the most powerful sorcerer and this is one way. I was last since I came here last.

Himari was next and I actually paid attention this time because I wanted to see what would happen. She said what magic she wields to Professor Shou and opened her grimoire where she said the words, "Severegra Invocitus"

And a green stone appeared with a white flower in the middle, once she grabs hold of the stone it should transform into a piece of jewelry like a necklace or bracelet. It held most sorcerers true power, once you master your grimoire you wouldn't need the stone unless you're calling for your antichrist. Only the stone has that much power transfer spirits through different dimensions.

The stoned turned into a necklace, which was said the stronger sorcerers had their magic stones as necklace. The weaker ones had bracelets.

Professor Shou asked her to summon her antichrist finally which was simple enough. You had to say the single spell with the demon's name and you dismiss him the same way.

"Demoniceos Kiyohime" She summoned her demon, we read about her in books but was amazing seeing her in person. Kiyohime, the bat demon, she still looked like a teenager but that's probably because demons in the underworld don't have to age. She had pale white skin, red long hair with bat wings and fangs. Everyone clapped, amazed at the strong antichrist she summoned. It makes me wonder if I will fuck things up this time around like yesterday.

When Professor Shou called me up the stage I sighed. I really had to do this in front of everyone. I placed my grimoire on the Podium. Everyone could see in my face that I wasn't ready to be publicly humiliated in front of the class. What if I get a hideous demon or worse one of those dwarfs.

"What kind of magic do you wield Yuzuki?" Professor Shou asked so he could test and analyze the strength of my powers.

"Uh. Lunar Magic." I said unsure, I didn't know myself if magic like this existed since it was told as a myth but it says so in my book then I couldn't lie.

He whispered something into his advisors ear after my answer. He used magic to cancel out wondering ears like mine from hearing what he was saying. It wasn't good things probably. Am I already making a fool of myself. He nodded his head for me to continue.

I opened my grimoire and closed my eyes as I chanted, "Severegra Invocitus"

A blue light appeared and so did my stone. It was more like a crystal than a stone, there was nothing fascinating about it. It look like a chunk of ice. I frowned as the class all snickered and commented at my non impressive stone. Sighing I continued the ceremony by picking up the stone. I closed my eyes and almost begged for it not to turn it a bracelet.

When I opened my eyes, the stone formed into a ring. A ring-like my fathers and I couldn't tell you how relieved I was. Everyone awed, it's not every day a sorcerer has their stone forged into a ring. It's not rare but only the most powerful sorcerers can wield magic through a ring.

"It's probably rigged for her. She has lunar magic and her father has cosmic magic. Now she has a ring like he does." A girl in the front row bickered. It almost made me want to throw her across the room.

Ignoring their comments, I went on forward to summon my antichrist. It says his name Yukio and he was an Ice Wolf Demon. Wolf demons sound so lame but some of the 3 elemental cursed Wolf demons were some of the strongest and he was one of them.

"Demoniceos Yukio"  I shut my eyes as a powerful portal began open, it was much stronger than the others when they opened the gate to the underworld. Why did it feel like the portal was sucking me in?

The air felt toxic, you can tell this is a passageway to another dimension. As Professor Shou yelled at me to close the portal, it was too late. My foot slipped and I was sucked into the portal unwillingly. There was nothing I could do as it swallowed me up and closed immediately after.

I woke up with my face numbed and planted straight in the ground. Well, the snow covered ground. I groaned as I got up from my position. My head was throbbing from the fall and it took me a couple seconds to realize the position I was in.

I got up to my feet immediately. I was in the middle of no where in the frozen tundra. I had no jacket or anything to keep me warm expect my school uniform which I smartly chose to where my cardigan today.

Where was I?

"Hello?" I yelled, this place was absolutely stranded with no a human soul in sight. If I was being honest this place doesn't look like it would hold humans, the sky was a dark purple. There was no way we were still in Zega.

I started the run but my feet were too numb to take me far so I began to search for shelter for so I can survive. I needed to find a way out of this mess. There was a cave near by but it seemed to convenient, almost like a trap.

"How the hell did I get here?" I whispered,

"Hello, are you the one who summoned Yukio?" I heard a small voice. It came out of nowhere. It's not humanly possible for someone to appear out of thin air after I saw there weren't a living thing miles from here.

I shook as I turned around but there was no one there. Was my mind playing tricks on me?

"I'm down here miss" I looked down and I must have been on drugs as I saw a white lizard with gold eyes speaking to me. I can't make this up. "My name is Setsu"

I didn't think before screaming. I didn't need to think since there was a reptile speaking to me. Forcing my feet to run, I found safety in the nearby cave I saw early. I've seen strange things that I never thought was possible but talking lizards takes the cake.

I calmed down a bit. The cave was cold as hell but at least I safe and away from the creature.

"Why'd you run off for? Does my breath stink or something?" I heard the same voice say, he must have followed me. Why do these kinds of situations happen to me I sighed.

Even though I'm terrified of a reptile-like I'm shaking in my knees as I back away from that thing. I had to try to protect myself, I had gotten my stone and had a powerful source of magic.

That I didn't know how to use or control. So I just bluffed.

"Get away from me or I'll turn you into lunchmeat you-you talking frog" I raised my hand warning him that I'll use my magic, I hope he takes the fake bait.

"Easy there lady. I'm no enemy and definitely not a damn frog. Do all lizards look like frogs to you? All I asked was if you summoned Yukio? That's why your here right?" The tone he spoke to me was creepy but the way he gestured his hands as if he was a real human being freaked me out more.

But he had a point. I did summon an antichrist named Yukio but it's just how did I end up at a tundra?

"I did but I certainly wasn't suppose to end up in the frozen tundra. Do you know why I was brought here?"

"If you put that hand down and follow me I'll tell why"

It's not like I had any choice. I didn't have magic so I couldn't harm him. I choose to follow him, I can't let a talking lizard scare me into freezing to death.

We go deeper into the cave and it got even more cold for each step. I don't think I can survive any longer with my legs exposed to this much cold weather.

"I didn't think there would be a sorcerer powerful enough to summon Yukio. I didn't think it would be a chick either. They mostly assign same gender demons to the sorcerers."

"Demons have genders? I find them all to be equally terrifying to even tell their genders apart"

"I will admit that thousands of years ago. Antichrists were so damn ugly. But now by working with the sorcerers they got a taste of what it looks like to be attractive so I guess it rubbed off" He said, and I had to agree. Most of the antichrist I saw today wasn't nearly as hideous as the pictures in the textbooks.

He got a stopping point at the middle of a cave where there was a block of ice, "Why would you bring me here? It's a block of ice."

"That's what you think but this block of ice carries an even bigger blockhead named Yukio" He pulled my hand to the other side of the ice where I yelped at the sight of a human looking teen was in a slumber in ice.

"What happened to him?" I said admiring how his body was still attached and not decayed in that ice. Was he in there for long?

"My boy Yukio here broke some serious laws. Down in the underworld, we gotta follow rules as well and the punishments are far worse than a night in a jail cell for you humans." He tapped the ice with his tiny knuckles. So he really is trapped in there.

"He broke a law?"

"He broke a lot but the one he pulled over a hundred years ago almost ticked the old man satan into early retirement. The hothead froze him in this ice for all eternity." He jumped on my shoulder, I felt a chill running through my body and it wasn't from the cold. But I didn't speak of it since he was actually helping me. "There wasn't a sorcerer powerful enough to summon him until you came along. Now you can melt the ice and free him."

I turned my head away and scoffed, "Why would I want to help him? He's a criminal."

"He's also your ticket out of here so better start melting him or you'll be a human statue like him"

This is where my bad karma reaches its peak. I have to say these demons are clever coming up with their motives. I mean if I don't save this boy from dying I'll die too. They don't give many options.

"What am I suppose to do?" I gave in, if he was assigned to me then he's basically my property. A slave so if he tried to pull some tricks and try to kill me I could always haul him back in this ice.

"Place your hand with your stone on the ice and it should react to your power"

I did what I was told and placed my had on the ice. Concentrating all my mana into the stone, the ice did begin to melt but faster than I thought it would.

The ice was melting fast but soon my mana would run out and I would faint. The coldness of the cave didn't make it easier for me to stay strong. I had to do it. Yes, he's a criminal but also a young boy. He's the same age as me maybe even a year or two older. People say I'm heartless but I won't let him stay here to rot.

Once it was fully melted the boy fell into my arms and I could barely keep him up. He's was incredibly heavy and still unconscious. It wasn't until Setsu jumped off my shoulder and stuck his tongue in his ear is when he started to wake up.

"Wakey wakey Yukio. Your lazy ass been sleeping for over a hundred years"

There was a small laugh that I felt coming from him as he got up, he was weak. He shouldn't be moving. "Still annoying as ever Setsu"

He stood up entirely by himself leaving my arms empty. He was so cold, there was no warmth to him at all. I didn't understand how it was possible for him to stand after being frozen for that long.

He was.. I hate to say it he was handsome. I never seen a demon look more remotely like a human before. He was shirtless only wearing a black and white jacket and black pants. His shoes were combat boots and there were black as well. The only thing that separates him from us is the fact he has black cat-like ears or dog ears that blends into his hair, sharp claws, and a black tail. I looked closely at the tail and my eyes were shocked as I squealed when I saw it move.

He turned around finally noticing my presence. It was only now that I got a good look at his face, his eyes were so golden so abnormal. Almost like my red eyes, my eyes were the color of blood. No one has figured out why my eyes were red.

"Who are you?" The first time I heard him speak before passing out due to the impact of the cold weather.
